Pinch hitting President Clay Brandow got the meeting started around the usual time.  Hard Hat Gary was having his mouth worked on for deep cleaning.  Jim Hartung was a guest Rotarian.  Steve Short introduced his daughter Sidney.   Vanessa talked about the work party the next day (It went very well.  4 hours of yard clean-up with Empower Yolo at a local shelter home is what Rotary is all about!).  Nikki mentioned the International Festival that was held on Sunday (I drove by and there was quite a crowd).  If you are missing an extension cord from Oktoberfest, please see Tom Read.  He also asked if anyone found a red halogen lantern.   There will be an Oktoberfest recap coming up soon.  It was a well-attended event.  Vic Bucher then said that there is a 40 year gala event for Meals on Wheels to be held Sunday, October 11th.  If any Rotarian that has delivered meals shows up, Vic will buy your dinner there!  Manny made a short announcement for the upcoming Rotary Holiday Party to be held December 5th, at the U.S. Bicycle of Fame.

We then had a reintroduction of two old members coming back into the cult and one newbie.  Jonathan Clay and Elma GardnerJonathan is a tall lobbyist who likes making custom bicycles. (Editor's note: Not to be mistaken for his doppelganger, Clay Brandow!)  Elma is an interior designer.  She did the original designs for the panels that we still use at Grad Night.

Next up was Ray SalomanAndrew Newman was his sponsor, Ray is married to Betsy and has two daughters, Virginia and ElizabethRay went to Haas School of Business at UC Bay Area (by the way, they are 5-0 just waiting to break all the Old Blue’s hearts.  Last Rose Bowl Cal played in was before I was born and Ike was president).   Ray is CFO at Hattori Hanzo Shears, Inc., http://www.hattorihanzoshears.com/  hence the scissor safety lecture by recruiting chair extraordinaire, John “Showman” Youmans.

Susanne Rockwell was the Sgt.  Dick Berry started off with a wedding anniversary announcement and a nod to the big bad green machine from East Lansing.

(Editor's note: Jim has put together the scoop for us new members, to fully appreciate the strength, origin and validity of Dick Berry's Michigan State loyalty, thanks Jim! Check out the good looking swordsman below, now all we need are trading cards!)

Michigan State Hall Of Famer, Dick Berry can back up the talk!

Manny gave $5 for Larry’s weak attempt at apology for his utterly inappropriate speaker two weeks ago.  (Editor’s note: I’m pretty sure it was only a $1 apology) Larry, it is going to cost more than $5.  Nancy for her daughter Jessica’s upcoming nuptials.  Susanne for the help from Roteract and Interact at Oktoberfest.  Jim Smith had to pay $10 to “buy” a picture of him and two opposite gender people from Oktoberfest. (He said it was worth every penny).  Susanne gave her honey bunch time to gloat for winning the Western Division in the odd year.  It was nice not to have Aaron Philips here for that too (I did see him on Saturday at the work party.  I manned up and said congrats.  That is just the kind of guy I am.)

Our speaker was Alison Kent.  She talked about seeing your ideas on paper can help you focus on the whole picture, understand relationships and improve your decision-making. Graphic recording is a dynamic and participatory process that captures discussions in real time,
usually on large sheets of paper, using a combination of images and words. Everyone present can immediately see how their contribution fits into the whole picture. Alison had up a visual representation of an earlier club Oktoberfest planning meeting.

During the meeting she asked members what we do and why?  Everyone was asked to shout a word that describes us.  She then made it into a graphic recording as it went along.  Here is the finished project.

It was an interesting program.  Her website is at http://listen-ink.net/about/  Youman’s can probably use this graphic to show possible members what we are.  Hint, hint.  I put in $5 wishing that she’d have been here for Larry’s speaker.  That would have been a challenge for her!

Draw of the day came and went.  Meeting adjourned at the usual time.  Happy Birthday Alice!
