Good day Fellow Rotarians: The Davis Sunrise Rotary Club meeting of May 8th was officially opened by current Prez Chuck Cunningham, even though it was a Club Assembly meeting with next Prez Gary Johns.
Perennial Sergeant Rick Stromberg was at the helm today for a flood of Happy Bucks:
Dick Berry was happy for the hopeful news of wife Judy’s chemo therapy.  We are too, Dick.  Gretchen Peralta was happy to see Meaghan Likes, who has no previous experience as a delivery person, show up at Meals on Wheels last week, in a heroic attempt to sub in for her husband, a Kiwanian volunteer.   As Chair of the Meals on Wheels Board, I think she should be on the cover of the next Meals and Deals quarterly.  Dick Bourne was happy to let us know that most of his winnings would be headed for the Paul Harris coffers.  Attorney, and litigator extraordinaire, Will Portello, will advise Dick on what the legal definition of “most” is. John Munn arose to say that he is happy to squash the rumor that his daughter is pregnant.  Nathalie Minya Mukome is happy that the Davis Hat Fundraiser made a ton of money, and that her daughter is three years old. Carolyn Stiver is appreciative of the help that was rendered to her in erecting the Rotary Farmer’s Market Tent: Clay Brandow; Chuck Snipes; and Larry Greene. Jay Brookman was happy to have Club Members David Foos and his wife Susana Russ as neighbors for ten years.  They are now moving to new digs and Jay just wanted to give ‘em  a salute for the memories.  Tim Daleiden (a name I always have to look up for spelling, but then ask myself “why?”) was happy for seeing the familiar face of ER nurse Gretchen Peralta while accompanying a friend in need to the Sutter Hospital Emergency Room.  Remarkable Member Vanessa Errecarte stood to announce that she was donating $358 to the Rotary Foundation in celebration for finishing a marathon, the previous weekend, in 3 hours and 58 minutes.  That would be over 27 miles for those who drive around a parking lot looking for a closer open stall. Steve Short was happy for the Rotary/Rotaract mentor program and happy for the content relationship with his mentee Lauren.  And Clay Brandow is also happy for the Rotary/Rotaract mentor program itself.
Sergeant Rick Stromberg handed out Roses to Club moms (and probably saving one for Pat) celebrating Mother’s Day, and acknowledging that none of us would be here but for mom.
The Club Assembly was conducted by Gary Johns, who handed out a survey for Club Members to express their opinion of how we can improve the club, and gave us a glimpse of his coming administration.  Each Committee Chair was asked to give a short rendition of things being accomplished or to be accomplished.
The Community Service Committee (Vanessa Errecarte & Mack Walker) Vanessa stood to say that the Club has donated over $8,000 to various charities in this last year.  Two specific mentions were the Shade Structure Project, and the provision of a Steam Table for Yolo County Meals on Wheels.  She said that in the coming year, there would be repair and maintenance projects for Progress Ranch, and the SADVC facility in Davis.
The Youth Services Committee (Nikki Grey Rutamu & David Morse II) Nikki stood to say that this year the committee is focusing on rebuilding the Davis High and DaVinci Interact Clubs.  Committee member Don Morrill also mentioned the importance of Camp Royal, a Rotary Camp in the Trinity Alps that has gotten rave reviews as a venue for character building for a critical time of life; and Camp venture in Vallejo that has an entrepreneurial theme.  The committee also coordinates the Student of the Month, and assures sponsorship and Club attendance at UCD Rotaract events.
International Committee (David Copp) David stood to say that the Club has given $2,000 through two methods for Nepal Relief.  He also said that Brian Sway was working on a grant.  Other projects that involve indigenous Rotary Clubs are a classroom conversion to a library at a grammar school in Kenya and operational assistance for a Braille embosser in Zimbabwe.
Fundraising (Dennis Lindsay) Dennis stood to say that the sources of revenues for the Club are three major events during the year, but not all events are created equal:  The Oktoberfest (Dave Heard, Director) is the most significant event bringing in about $23,000 in 2014; the Ribs & Rotary Event (formerly the Turkey BBQ) bringing in about $6,000 in 2014; and the Yolo County Fair Rotary Beer Booth (all Yolo County Clubs participating) bringing in about $2,500 in 2014.
Communications/Public Relations (Susanne Rockwell) Susanne stood to say that Meaghan Likes is the new editor of the Get Up & Go.  She says to the eight reporters of the pool: Get your copy in by Sunday….or else.  As this point, of this reporters typing this copy, the time is 11:50PM, Sunday May 10….and I am nervous.  Susanne called for a Club “atta boy” for retiring Editor Bud Harmon who has done a GREAT job for the last 15 years (Bud took the job over from this club reporter, who had taken the job over from “first editor” Bruce Wolk).  Thanks, Bud for a rich and worthy history.  Editors Note:  Bruce Wolk was actually the third editor.  Founding president, Barry Rathfon, was the first, Dick McCapes was the second, and most recently, Aaron Phillips, was the sixth.
Other Committees in the Mix: Membership (John Youmans); Foundation Committee (Larry Greene & Bruce Wolk); Club Service: House Committee (Dave Heard) Sergeants (Rick Stromberg) Music (Dave Morse & Chuck Snipes) Programs (Larry Olsen) Grad Night (Andrew Yang).

As Draw of the Day Director, Dave Heard presented Dick Bourne with a winner’s check for $1,748.00.  It’s good that “most” of it will go to the Rotary
Foundation because you’re gonna get a Form 1099 from Treasurer Tom Read next January.  In CPA parlance, Dick, you have “above the line” income, and “below the line” deduction.  Sometimes, life just isn’t fair.
Bob Agee won the Draw of the Day for today, a got a free breakfast. That’s all the news that’s fit to print.
