No Photos Until Cyberspace Meetings End

Get Up and Go for May 15

With the deepest apologies from the author for the delay… with one day blending into another, 9-weeks-post haircut, and surly teenage cellmates, the scribing fell off the radar.  But here we go….

We kicked things off on our virtual meeting at 7:05, with President Tim ringing the bell.  The meeting resembled nothing more than a group therapy scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest:  a group of faces, a cacophony of singing through the Zoom lag, and no sense of reality.
We had 80 people in the meeting, with a special Student of the Month Program.  Our fellow Rotarians in attendance included Wayne Ginsberg, President of the Woodland Sunrise Club and Gloria Androa, all the way from Uganda.  In addition, we had our own former member Kelly Wilkerson, now working with a turn-out-the-vote group.

Turning to announcements, we had a few.  Tim noted that some people are donating their dues.  Dave Copp announced that the Community Services Committee will match donations to community organizations for COVID-19 relief.  Available organizations include Suicide Prevention of Yolo County, Yolo County Food Bank, Progress Ranch, Meals on Wheels, Davis Crisis Nursery, and EmpowerYolo.
Meaghan and Brodie had a big announcement about the Barbecue, protocols, traffic flow, food safety… but that already happened, nobody cares. So I won’t restate it.  If we have to do the Rotary Barbecue the same way in a year, I predict we’ll be doing it in smoking rubble. So enough.
Dave Murphy reported that our Bolivian exchange student Marcel has safely made it home, cleared Bolivian quarantine, and is back with his family.  Brodie announced a wine tasting.  It already happened.  I won’t bore you with details about a virtual wine tasting that already happened.  If you were there on Zoom, it was probably grand.  If you weren’t there, but instead huddled in a closet with a box of Two-Buck-Chuck, socially distancing from your hellish roommates for the past 9 weeks, it was probably the last thing you wanted to hear about.

Larry Olsen hit the ground running as Sergeant. Carolyn Stiver announced that Celebrate Davis is cancelled, but that there will be a live broadcast of a virtual Celebrate Davis on May 28, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  That’ll be beamed from Council Chambers.  Good for Carolyn getting her announcement out early enough that I could write about it.  I’ll give you a cookie when I get out of prison.
Tim Daleden was sent on a mission by Suicide Prevention to pick up hand sanitizer, and gave happy bucks for surviving.  I’m sure there’s a joke there somewhere.  But I’m tired.

Clay had happy bucks for the elopement of his daughter Chloe and her new husband Kyle.  Andrew Newman bought 42,000 cloth masks.  He will give you one if you donate to Yolo Food Bank.  Lori has been busy with club activities and community service, and gave happy bucks for the club providing infrastructure.  Rose was fined for something about bubbles.  Brodie was fined for his hat.  “Don Winters.”  I don’t know what my notes meant, but they say “Don Winters.”  To be honest, my little stovetop espresso pot was ready, so I went and got it.   I apparently didn’t finish the sentence.  But Don Winters got fined.  Or gave happy bucks.  Maybe.

John Bowes thanked Rotary for the ongoing support, and indicated that the plan for DJUSD is to reopen on August 26, 2020 with a regular brick-and-mortar school year.  Then my notes have some more “Don Winters…” Puzzling.  Don talked as a long-time teacher about the programs Rotary supports for youth, including Rotaract, Interact, Young Royal Camp, and Youth Exchange.
With that, we turned the program over to our students.

With the conclusion of that portion, there was a short period of time for questions.  After some debate, Don uttered a line that will go down in history:  “I was a teacher for 42 years.  I know better than to call on kids.”
Have a great quarantine.
Get Up and Go.
