0710 and Mr. Morse coaxing out Smile on the piano heralded the start for our Davis Sunrise Rotary meeting and the greeting of our Student of the Month on January 18th.  The room was in a bit of a ruckus but President Rose was in charge and everyone quickly quieted.
Lucas Frerichs introduced the Davis Sunrise Rotary and our community and international projects and services provided by our generous Club members.  One thing that has been overlooked is that our Student of the Month Program was introduced in 2003 by then member and school nurse, Susan Hawkins. The goal was to ask faculty to identify those students who were achieving educational goals against odds; not normally recognized for their contribution yet who create a difference in their classrooms; demonstrate a self-direction and initiative; and often reaching beyond themselves to help others.  It is always interesting to hear these qualities described by the nominating teacher.  I can only imagine how proud the parents and students must feel.
No one can accuse us of dilly-dallying as quickly the Sargent of the Day stood up to collect Happy Bucks to fill our pot.  Meaghan Likes was happy to announce that 282 months ago, she was herself a Student of the Month and she is still learning!  Lori Raineri reminded us of the New Member Social (open to all members) to be held at her casa on Friday, February 1st at 5:45. As with all our socials, food and beverage will be available.  Clay Brandow spent his birthday skiing and playing with his family.  Patsy Inouye missed us last Friday as she was on a rode trip to Texas to rescue her daughter and return her to California.  Vanessa Errecarte was encouraging us to join her and others to prune trees in Davis.  She reminded us this was a good way to introduce our children and grandchildren to community service and then, out doing herself,  sweetened the pot by promising donuts.  Larry Olsen was pleased to have his daughter Katrina visiting regardless of her aversion to early mornings. Tim Daleiden was excited to have had great snow in Whistler British Columbia for a skiing vacation.  He even went to the local Rotary meeting and although different much was similar.  Irena Asmundson is now working (with pay?) for a new boss (Gavin Newsom) and reports all is “good”.  President Rose was understandably proud that the Chamber of Commerce selected our Davis Club as service club of the year!  Mack Walker is sad about the NFL playoffs.  Someone (?) complained that during their travels, traffic was at a stand still and then a crawl waiting for turkeys to cross a street.
President Rose let us know that next week we would be meeting another member up close and personal as we hear from One of Our Own.  Stay tuned.
On that note, the meeting was coming to a conclusion, but not before President Rose reminded us to go out and Be the Inspiration and Katrina drew the ticket that allowed Ray Salomon to win a free breakfast!
