Mr. Piano Man, Dave Morse was certainly bridging the generational gap with his choice of music on Friday.  Playing tunes such as Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue and Toot Toot Tootsie to It’s My Party and Wooly Booly.  Always much appreciated, Dave!
Our Soon to be Past President, Gary Johns, took a few minutes to call our rowdy crowd to order so that Visitors could be officially acknowledged and welcomed. Children of Matt Crider, Isabel and Owen were with us before leaving for a camping trip.  Marc Thompson introduced his son’s coach, Lauren Silverstein and Matt Williams.  Moving from welcoming visitors to making announcements, and without attention to eating breakfast, Susanne Rockwell was caught with her mouth still full to announce the exciting birth of Nikki Grey Rutamu’s baby boy, Enzo, after a 40 hour labor!  Another new member in the making.  Patsy Inouye let us know time was winding down for members to give her articles of clothing to get the Rotary logo embroidered as modeled by Carolyn StiverPast President Chuck Cunningham announced our Club Social for this Friday, June 3rd at Our House Restaurant from 5:00-6:30p.  What’s a Club Social, you ask? Very simple says Chuck…just show up, order off menu and spend some time laughing, eating, drinking and chatting with fellow Rotarians.  Obviously a perfect opportunity to invite a friend, partner, and/or a potential member.  Can’t get any easier than that.  Also we have our Club’s pending Demotion Dinner (kicking out current and welcoming in new Club President) coming up on Sunday, June 26th at I House (International House) beginning from 5:15 with cocktails on the patio, followed by dinner by Cracciola’s and yet another Sergeants irreverent demotion program.  Again a great opportunity for guests and partners!  Sign-ups begin next week at $35/person.  Announcements not finished until Rose Cholewinski bounces up to report that more ½ the club attended our
recent Rotary BarBQ and did well surviving a 10 minute rain cloud burst at 4:15!  Yummy home baked pies sold out and made us almost as much as the beer booth.  Bartenders are defending this based upon colder than usual weather.  Rose also warned those who have not turned in their money will be visited by the Sergeants.  Soon to be Past President, Gary Johns, announced a joint Board meeting to introduce Soon to be President, Manny Carbahal’s new Board members to the “system”.   Andrew Yang is thrilled with the members signing-up to help his with our China Road for Grad Nights
Moving on to Sergeant of the Day Will Portello, members were quick to throw Happy Bucks into the pot before Will had the opportunity to fine them.  Andrew Newman was very happy to have his daughter soon to be returning from Columbia after a life changing year on Youth Exchange.  Tim Daleiden has bought a new home thanks to Marc Thompson who obviously has no knowledge of actuarial tables and granted him a 30 year loan, but who’s counting?  Rose Cholewinski got recognized again for being the proud owner of Swim America, the Business of the Year Award Recipient.   Our resident Letters to the Editor authors, Tom Cross and Clay Brandow were written up yet again.  Back to China Road….what you may not have known is that our very own Elma Gardner was the master designer of our soon to be created, updated Road!  Ungrateful wretch, John Reed left his MOW Edwards Jones gift cup behind at last meeting!  Oh, poor, popular Carolyn Stiver was hit not once, but twice with incriminating photos of using her cell phone during a meeting!  This might be a heads up to others that sneaky Pete photographer, Jim Belenis, is on the Sergeants payroll.
Vanessa Errecarte then introduced Tracy Fauver, LCSW and Executive Director for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for Yolo County.  Tracy proceeded to open our eyes with a brief statistic of 370 children from Yolo County are currently in Foster Care (with 25 kids brought into the Foster Care system in the preceding week alone).  CASA has only been able to provide volunteer CASA services to 95 of these children since January 1st yet Tracy’s goal is to see that she serves 100% of the children in the Foster Care system by 2020.  Just as a proud aside, our own Bonnie Walther is a CASA volunteer!
CASA recruits, screens, trains and supports community volunteers who are actually appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected thus being placed in the foster care system.  CASA volunteers are not there to solve problems but to advocate for best possible situation.  Placement in the foster care system is no surprise based upon a 1995-97 (ACE Study – Adverse Childhood Experiences) study out of Kaiser San Diego that surveyed childhood maltreatment and family dysfunction.  Hard to imagine but 1 in 5 children in Yolo County (maybe even a few of us) have experienced an adverse childhood experience, if those are considered to include extreme economic hardship, divorce/separation, living with an alcohol or drug problem in the house, victim or witness of neighborhood violence, living with family member with mental illness/suicide, domestic violence witness, incarcerated parent(s), ethnic or racial discrimination and death of a parent.  One or more of these experiences can result in toxic stress and result in a myriad of problems for children including placement in the foster care system.
The singular evidence-based practice that is proven to make a difference is the ability to develop a positive, supportive relationship…CASA!  Children can be resilient through the encouragement of social connectedness and developing community; receiving concrete support in a time of need; viewing social and emotional competence and developing the use of restorative practices in managing conflict….CASA!
Tracy’s message was clear.  Become a CASA.  Recommend CASA. Give to CASA.  And before all that, please join them this Sunday, June 5th at the Turkovich Winery from 1-4pm to sip wines and enjoy appetizers.
We are having a Club Assembly Friday.  What is that?  It’s a process where members can voice an opinion on Club projects, focus and join the committee(s) of your choice.
Not sure who “won” the draw of the day, but the pot grows!
