Alert to all club bacon lovers: Hormel Foods has announced that you may order a free bacon scented mask.  Get your order in ASAP.  Probably too late by the time this report is circulated.  Of course, Brodie already had his bacon mask and demonstrated the unzip feature which allows you to eat bacon while wearing the mask.  Clay Brandow asked Brian if he found this in his Spam mail.

Jacques Franco introduced our speaker today our own member:  Larry Greene retired as the Executive Director of the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District on August 31, 2017. Larry has a Bachelors Degree in Science Education from NC State University, and Masters Degrees in Logistics Management from Florida Institute of Technology and Human Resources Education from Boston University. He is a Past-President of the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association (CAPCOA) (twice serving as President) and served as a permanent member on the CAPCOA Board of Directors. He is a Past President of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies (NACAA) and was Co-Chair of the Global Warming Committee. Larry served 23 years in the US Army where his specialty areas were Logistics Management and Petroleum Management/Operations and 22 years as Executive Director at Yolo-Solano AQMD and Sac Metro AQMD.

His topic: “Wildfires, Health Impacts of Smoke, Indoor Air Quality”

Larry treated us with a informed and well thought out power point with pictures and facts about wild fires, air quality measurement, best methods to treat indoor air quality and when and what to do outdoors. Larry’s power point is too big to circulate.  He suggested folks use the California Air Resources website for home information about smoke: https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/protecting-yourself-wildfire-smoke.

Questions
Rose Cholewinski:  Rose noted that her business uses 100% outdoor air.  She was happy to learn that “scrubbers” adequately treated the air intake, so she could continue to serve clients at her facility.
Jacques Franco:  What is being done to deal with the discrepancy between the readings of personal “purple” air quality monitors and the official AQMD data?
Answer: EPA uses official air quality monitors and personal monitors and makes a correction factor since PurpleAir monitors generally have higher readings than the official regulatory monitors.
Chuck Snipes:  the “Air Now” website is very confusing to get a quick summary of air quality in your area.  However, the “Air Now” app provides an easy to understand summary.  Larry pointed out that the Air Now website does have a summary, but agreed that it required some navigation.
Don Morrill:  Thanked Larry for a timely and informative presentation, he asked, are we going to have prescribed burns in the future.  Answer: yes.
Brian Sway asked Larry if given the change in California climate does he plan to leave the state?  Larry says he’s committed to staying in California.
Bruce Wolk asked how long can you stay out in bad air if you have a M95 mask? This depends on how heavy the smoke is. The masks can get clogged up making breathing harder.
Larry Greene’s truth or lies:

1) Between my wife, myself, and my mom and dad, we have two anniversaries and two birthdays on the same date.
2) I have traveled to all but one state in the U.S.
3) I am retired from local government working in Air Quality Management.
4) Between military service and other travel, I have visited more than 35 countries.
Lie: #4, he has been to 25 countries, the one state he has not been to is North Dakota.

Joke of the Day,
Why does a pirate wear underwear?  To cover his/her booty!

And we close noting that good jokes are also about timing.  Clay Brandow wondered if Larry Greene would return to the Smokey Mountains.

Many folks stayed on the zoom call for another 15 minutes for a friendly chat.
