Last week’s sequence of events as reported by Jonathan Clay….

Your slightly trusty reporter is back for another week of mediocre reporting and commentary, with guest reporting by Nurse Ratchet (aka Gretchen).

The meeting started at a timely 7:09am and kicked off with visiting Rotarians… other than Roy Kroener, that was it.  Dave Morse (the elder) brought along his Uncle Wally from somewhere far from Davis (like Mississippi maybe?), apparently Uncle Wally had just arrived on the 7am train and Dave picked up uncle Wally and brought him to Rotary (this reporter loves Rotary, but this might be a little too much).

And there was a random visitor from Texas…. Kevin.

And Melissa Moreno was visiting the club as well.  I guess we are a popular visitor destination in Davis.

And of course there was the bring your daughter to Rotary contingents, with Vanessa bringing Ella and Clay bringing Brianna.

President Rose mentioned a fall Assembly on Oct 20th, but this reporter still has no clue what this is for.  Speaking of President Rose, our fearless leader has incorporated a new segment called “Did you know” – apparently the Club didn’t until we saw the video.  And based on the production level of the video, not sure that anyone knew about this until midnight before the meeting.  This reporter knows some 3rd graders that might be able to help up the production value of the video next time.

Announcements – Oktoberfest is coming up on October 6th from 6pm to 9pm in Central Park.  Apparently the Scouts will be helping again this year.  Glad the child labor laws have been waived for this community service event.  Related to the Oktoberfest, Chuck Snipes will be leading a pub crawl on Thursday (9/27) starting at 3 Mile Brewery.  Sounds like the plan is to try and sell tickets to drunk students at the various downtown bars. There seems to be a theme of child/youth exploitation with this event.

Our illustrious elected Council Member Dan Carson announced that Rotarians need to bring bottles of wine by next Friday for inclusion in the wine auction (which will be conducted by children I hear).  Dan is also looking for a wine rack to hold all this glorious wine, but only wants full bottles.  Sorry Manny.

Carolyn Stiver got up to talk about Meals on Wheels and then relay her misadventures along President Trump on the Korean Peninsula.  Apparently Carolyn was set to meet with Trump and Kim Jung-un but couldn’t find a Davis Sunrise Rotary flag and had to bow out of the meeting.  Past President Gretchen “the enforcer” Peralta was able to dig up a Davis Noon Club flag to send to Carolyn so she could at least meet with our sister city rotary clubs.  In exchange for the wrong club flag, Carolyn was presented with a plague (or plaque?!), and they met at a community garden for the mentally disabled that the Korean club built.   Sounds like Davis Sunrise needs to up its game a bit.

Larry Olsen (or Greene?!) followed this up with a Paul Harris presentation to Carolyn of a new pin with a jewel.  Way to go.

Nathalie announced that her annual woman’s tea party to support students is coming… Nathalie is also looking for hosts during the week of Oct 31st through Nov 10th.

Vanessa reminded the club that the Community Service Needs Assessment was due this past Friday but that the assessment could still be turned in by this Friday.  Vanessa also gave thanks to the club members that helped with the Guardian Scholars, especially John McNamara who as always, is so gracious with his time and equipment.

The Sergeant of the Day was Larry Olsen (or Greene?!).

Dan Carson gave $5 for happy bucks… something to do with finding something.

Vanessa was somehow roped into a fine or happy bucks for the Noon Club taking credit for projects at Progress Ranch.  Vanessa later gave happy bucks so that she could correct the record on the Noon club and their public service exploits.

Larry gave happy bucks for his visit to Israel.

Bob Poppenga gave happy bucks for all the money the Club made at the beer booth and was simultaneously fined for some quote in national news related to bacon being safe.  Not sure why bacon is safe, or unsafe, but apparently Consumer Reports talked to Bob about this.

Chuck Snipes gave happy bucks to Owen Sheppard and Ben Thompson taking pictures of his roof, and something else related to an organized ride.

Roy Kroener was happy that it was the last day of summer.  And the notes are a bit scrambled – this is part of the problem when you have a bunch of chatty Rotarians at the breakfast table.  Sounds like Roy may have a 2nd grandson that was named after our fellow Rotarian Brodie.  So thoughtful.

Then Past President Gretchen Peralta gave happy bucks and a check to the foundation (which she conveniently forgot to bring along) for Meaghan Likes helping her pull together a presentation.

Larry Greene was happy that Hurricane Florence stayed north of his daughter’s home (Ya).

Nathalie gave happy bucks because since her previous announcement about needing hosts, she already had club members offer to host… after they check with their wives first (as they should).

And there is a note about Brodie and New Orleans… not sure why but it must be good.

Michael M. is happy to finally rest after the crazy lead-up to and the week of events for the Global Climate Action meetings in San Francisco last week.  And he is very happy that it is over now.

And then there was a flyer distributed to the club honoring the legend of “Big Manny” and his frozen wings.  This reporter is sure there is a joke in there somewhere, but this publication has a restraining order from publishing anything related to Manny and his jokes.

That concluded the business end of the meeting and things were turned over to Clay Brandow to introduce Brianna to talk about Barre fitness.  And this is where the reporting duties switch off.  That said, this reporter is disappointed that club leadership didn’t ensure that appropriate medical safeguards where in-place for the older members of the club as Brianna started her presentation with a brisk round of calisthenics and movement exercises.  This reporter was worried that shock paddles might be needed to bring a member back from the big bacon buffet in the sky after their hearts climbed above 100.

Last week’s sequence of events as reported by Gretchen Peralta….

And our speaker of day was…..drum roll…..Brianna Brandow daughter of our own Clay Brandow!  Such a delightful and energetic young woman was there to help us recognize there is more to aging then just letting it happen.

We were warned to wear our “favorite workout clothes” (like I even own any let alone… have favorites) to the meeting.  I did get temporarily confused between Barre vs bar exercises and the need for workout clothes!  Made me wonder what Brianna had in mind for us more sedentary members.  Of course, being the ever-ready resident club nurse, I did brush up on my CPR techniques as figured she might be inadvertently helping me fill the ER beds.

Upon stepping to the front of the room and turning on the music, Brianna quickly got everyone up and engaged ….I did see Larry Olsen quietly sneak to the side of the room and sit IN a chair.  Actually I have to confess as the engaged group of morning Rotarians followed her instructions to grab a chair and get started with her brief introductory program of full body, no impact, balanced exercises I too found a chair on the side of the room 😊If you didn’t see our little Ella doing all the exercises you missed just about the cutest thing going that morning!  On a less than cute note,  I would suspect that there may have been a few of us who “felt the no impact” in our forgotten muscles groups later in the day.

The whole point of Brianna’s program at Yolo Barre is to recognize the importance at every age of the need for functional training to improve our overall age as we age.  It’s all about getting and keeping as much quality and mobility as possible to enjoy the quantity of our life.

Just to help those who couldn’t be there to move and groove with us, Brianna has graciously shared her power point (but unfortunately the file was too large to upload).  If you want to check it out feel free to email us.  You’ll find it well worth your time.

And your trusty editor took video-graphical evidence for those of you wanting to relive the fun, just ask!
