June 3, 2022
Gee, I missed the ringing of the bell as this Reporter was covering for Mark at the front desk.  However, no one could miss our Mr. Piano Man, Dave Morse helping our singing sound much better.

Mr. “Soon to be Demoted” President David Copp quickly sought out Announcements.  Andrew Neumancomplemented Andrew Yang on working out the kinks for our Zoom process.  It also seems that our Mr. Yang will receive special recognition in Corning at our District Awards Ceremony on July 16th.  Everyone is invited to attend and cheer.  Brodie Hamilton, BBQ Co-Chair extraordinaire with PE Meaghan Likes, announced our event was a net zero – meaning zero trash!  Well, we did make “some money”.  but after a hiatus, we did well.  They had lots of sponsors and volunteers and about 500 dinners which helped to make our “come back” BBQ fantastic. Kudos to our Chef Jeff who managed to maintain and continue despite a dysfunctional BBQ grill surface.  In addition, Steve Streeter noted that Chef Jeff started at 0230 to get ready! That’s a professional!  Building on our BBQ success is our next community event, the Rotary Beer Booth at the Yolo County Fair, August 17th -21st.  It’s a joint effort of our 10 Yolo County Clubs and lots of fun so be prepared for more info to follow!   Rose Cholewinski thanked the many volunteers helping with the Swim America event for children from Knights Landing on June 14th. Rose is encouraging (allowing?) volunteers to actually get in the water (John and Chuck is this a challenge?) as well as having extra eyes on those in the water.  Irena Asmundson was off to Rotary International Convention in Houston which prompted other Past Presidents to gloat about their opportunity to have gone to L.A., Chicago (100th Year for Rotary), Barcelona and Bangkok.  Vanessa Errecarte shared a “secret” about our demotion in that both she and Tom Read will be out of the country, they have left Manny Carbajal in charge.  So please help him by sending in your RSVPs.   Clay Brandow mentioned a recent 12-day road trip with some retired hydrologists to Colorado.  He didn’t ask for bail money so assume, all behaved sufficiently.  Jay Brookman was appreciative of the Davis Cemetery and Odd Fellows resurrecting the Veterans’ Memorial Celebration. Jay is also relieved for the last day of school.  And they think the students are the only happy ones.  Steve Streeter is looking for Grad Night take-down help at 0500 on Saturday June 11th by a tempting offer of a brunch at Lori Raneri’s house afterward.  Carolyn Stiver also offered her appreciation for all that Andrew Yang does every week to keep our Zoom members involved.

Our Who Am I? was Manny Carbajal.  Manny’s has spent 41 years in Rotary ….currently with us in Davis Sunrise, after being “kicked out” of 2 other Clubs and a court order to stay out of West Sac.  (Their loss!).  He’s an avid cyclist….although he has been known to leave his wife in the ER with me after an accident on their tandem bike.  And yet, still he has been married to Debbie for 48 years and remains pleased for her low expectations.  He has had to give up running. Manny grew up in Winters before moving to the “big city”.  He and Debbie have 2 sons Eric, a CPA/Tax Manager, and Logan, a pipe fitter in San Francisco, and one lovely granddaughter.  The business he started 38 years ago with his brother John, Carbajal and Company, now has 5 partners.  Not to be limited, they started Trace Equity 34 years and followed with Carbajal & Olsen 23 years ago.  His key to success, hopefully to guide the next generation, is a legacy of hard work, putting clients and employees first, and maintaining a strong involvement in our community.  Well done Mr. Carbajal.

Dennis Lindsay was our Sergeant of the Day and wasted no time in calling us out.  Gretchen Peraltahad to apologize and hang her head in shame for “outing” fellow sergeant, Matt Crider.  Tom Read was noted for his upcoming travel to Switzerland for the weekend to attend wife Lynn’s High School Reunion.  Andrew Neuman hasn’t learned and now has TWO boats of which neither has sunk.  John Youmans missed our Wednesday morning sergeants’ meeting to go swimming with Chuck Snipes?  David Copp for rambling on about our process for “Dues” going forward.  Note the following explanation from Tom Read, our Treasurer….

Nothing has changed with our annual financial obligations for 2022-23 other than the way we are to pay.   Annual Meeting charges $720 regardless of in-person or Zoom attendance. Payment cycle (monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annual) is at the member’s discretion….yet anything but weekly please! Organizational Annual dues remain at $180 for which you will get a bill indicating the Annual Dues are due July 1st.   We are asking for payment by Venmo or check.  Objective:  1.  To minimize weekly at meeting payments by check or cash; 2.  To reduce a need for weekly tracking of meeting charge collection; and 3. Improve accounting and reporting to members.

Jacques Franco stepped up to introduce our speaker of the day, Dr. Karl Hausker, a Senior Fellow at the World Resources Institute Climate Program, leads analysis and modeling of decarbonization, climate mitigation, electricity market design, and the social cost of carbon.  He has spent three decades in the fields of climate change, energy and environment that has spanned our legislative and executive branches, research institutions, NGOs, and extensive consulting positions.  Much of his work has focused on the electricity and transportation sectors as well as on low carbon and climate resilient development strategies.

Dr. Hausker holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Cornell University and an M.P.P. and Ph.D. in Public Policy for the University of California, Berkeley.

He focused his presentation on a net-zero emissions pathway to a safer climate implementing long-term strategies and based on several climate solutions.  Because of the importance and significant information Dr. Hausker presented, please contact Gretchen or Frances to get a copy of the slide presentation.

Here is a summary of the topics covered and a link to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2022 report:  https://www.ipcc.ch/assessment-report/ar6/
