The upstairs room at Odd Fellows Hall was completely full with Rotarians, parents, teachers and honored Students of the Month. Our meeting began with president Manny Carbahal, ringing the bell.  We sang “Smile” and “America the Beautiful.”

Manny handed the microphone over to Lucas Frerichs who conducted the Student of the Month Program. He began with an overview of Rotary programs, accomplishments and the Four Way Test.  (Thank you Lucas for stepping in at the last minute, hope you're feeling better Nancy!)

Davis High Assistant Principle Tom McHale, introduced teachers who each introduced their nominees, which included six Davis High students.  Michele Flowers, Principle of King High school honored one of her students.  She also represented Davis School for Independent Study and introduced a teacher who honored another student.  Scott Bell, Vice Principal of Leonardo da Vinci High School honored a student.   Students were congratulated by all present and instructed to meet Jim Belenis who took their pictures which Bud organizes so they will appear in the Davis Enterprise.  (Thank Jim for showing up even when you weren’t feeling well!)

Our regular meeting began with Manny recognizing post cards received this week: Roy Kroener was in Puerto Rico and Clay Brandow was in Roseville.

Meaghan Likes and Keith Watenpaugh praised the success of the Club’s Trivia Night, which netted $5,000 and returned $3,500 into the Community.  Larry Greene and Bruce Wolk are collecting for the March Madness Men’s, NCAA Basketball Pool, $20/square. Winners will receive credit for donations to the Rotary Foundation.

Sgt. of the Day Clay Brandow was allocated about 5 minutes. Happy Bucks: Andrew Newman celebrated his daughter’s 17th birthday and his other daughter in town for Spring Break.  Irena Asmundson enjoyed a visit to Baja California where she attended a Rotary meeting in San Felipe, she expressed surprise that the club did not have Sergeants.  Jack Latow was happy for Andrew’s celebration.  Arnie Wolf was happy to have a two-week trip to Philadelphia.  Sgt. Brandow produced a picture which looked like our new Chancellor Gary May in full Star Trek costume.   Keith Watenpaugh, apparently a Trekky, explained that he had written something about human rights and Star Trek.  Furthermore, Professor Keith wrote an e-mail greeting our new Chancellor, mentioning  human rights and the relationship with Star Trek and was happy with the Chancellor’s reply.

Sgt. Brandow displayed the wonderful article in the March 3, edition of the Davis Enterprise “On the Road to Recovery” featuring our own John Youmans and Rose Cholewinski.  He then gave $10 happy bucks for John’s recovery, and was happy that John found Rose. Meaghan then gave belated happy bucks for John getting his feeding tube out today! Overall Sergeant Brandow collected a record amount of happy bucks related to John’s recovery, Rose’s support and the wonderful newspaper feature. If you missed the article, check it out here!
Club member Matt Williams provided a short program with Power Point illustrations, on “Project Toto.”  Matt loves spread sheets.  Project Toto is a transparent budget tool developed by Matt Williams,  Jeff Miller and Bob Fong.  All three are Commissioners in the City of Davis Finance and Budget Commission.  Matt concluded his 10-minute presentation saying,  “We want to have an engagement process for the City for new ideas.”

The model uses inputs of revenues and expenses based on the City’s own data and produces a 20 year forecast of net income.  Inputs can be adjusted to include assumptions on sales taxes, employee retirement benefits, employee salaries, etc.  Matt noted that the “model is on the internet.”

Draw of the day: John Morgan won a free breakfast.
