Nothing like the wonderful sounds of David Morse on the piano and quiche (!) to get the day started.  President Manny kicked us off at 7:09AM at which point we all mouthed the words to the song while Dave covered for us.

Visitors. Our about-to-be newly minted member of the Club, Cliff Shepard introduced his guest John Walter, who has lived in town for 25 years (and therefore a relative newcomer to Davis) and who is a co-founder of Repower Yolo.  In what became a running gag this meeting, it was pointed out that Cliff forgot to introduce his better half, Julie. Cliff made an admirable attempt to recover from this blunder, but let’s face it, we have a long memory here at sunrise Rotary (millennial babies, anyone?). Irena Asmundson introduced her Uncle Rod, who has made several welcome appearances at our meetings this year.  Dick Berry introduced fellow Kiwanian, Jester Jersey (not sure on the spelling, but my heart is in the right place).  Vanessa Errecarte brought in 13-day-old Jack, who was also born on the 13th.

Manny passed around several postcards from folks who are having a better summer than you, including Andrew Newman and Nathalie Minya Mukome.

Announcements. Tim Daleiden reminded us that Oktoberfest is coming up on October 1 and that the committee has been diligently working to get beer, permits, and food lined up.  Each member is on the hook for “selling” six tickets each at $35, which covers admission to the venue, comradery, music, comradery, you get the idea (Don’t forget food & beer… Oh yeah, and comradery!). Mitch Mysliwiec announced an upcoming Community Service meeting; Bob Poppenga  announced that the Yolo County Fair Beer Booth preliminary results were in (around $8,800) (I think we might be missing a digit there… Maybe $80,000ish?), and that we can potentially expect $4,000-$5,000 for our cut.

Induction.  Bob Poppenga introduced and inducted Cliff “in the dog house” Shepard  and, of course, Julie.  Cliff (and Julie) has lived in Davis for one year, has two children (one equestrian and one 6th grader), and has worked as a pilot for United for 27 years.  Cliff flies the Boeing Dreamliner, which has the Sergeants Committee scrambling to develop jokes related to big windows.

Fan Favorite- Sergeants. The formidable Dennis Lindsay was our Sergeant for the day, and fined Cliff Shepard right off the bat because... Julie. Welcome to Rotary. Then, happy bucks like crazy. Chuck Snipes was happy (in a mixed kind of way) for sending his daughter off to school in Victoria. Meaghan Likes was happy that one year ago she was going in for surgery, and that this year, instead of spending her time in Dr. appointments, she spent the summer traveling (yay Meaghan!). Chuck Cunningham was happy that Cunningham Engineering helped design the Art Museum. Cliff Shepard tried to make another comeback by announcing he was happy that Julie was here (nice try). Lori Raineri  also gave happy bucks for her recent 3.6 mile walk with Susanne Rockwell. Tim Daleiden was happy for his European vacation and Vanessa Errecarte was happy for all the things- Jack, big sister doing well, and all Jack’s new rotary friends.  Rose Cholewinski gave an encouraging update on John, who has recently been able to give his first standing up hug since the accident.  Aaron Phillips (Dude, you are missing from the Club Photo Directory) announced he was happy for his 28th birthday (no one likes a braggart, Aaron).  Andrew Newman was happy for one of his four children heading off to college, and Jeff Adamski was happy for all the great service provided by Gretchen and Co after experiencing the health services offered in So Cal (Nor Cal wins again).  John Morgan was happy for his birthday TODAY and Rick Stromberg was happy for his almost birthday.

Dennis then launched into a series of fines, which included a back-to-school themed shaming session for people with children and certain people (ahem, person. see byline above) without children (btw Dennis, my baby is named “Applying the Technological Innovations Systems Framework to Zero Emission Passenger Vehicles and Drayage Trucks”).  Alika Castillo was photographed using his cell phone at a past Rotary meeting (Jim Belenis is everywhere). Lori Raineri was fined for National Dog Day (calls for the fine to be a dog biscuit were dismissed swiftly) and she offered to pay $20. Brain Sway was fined for a sports themed reason (I am going to guess that it was related to his deep and abiding loyalty to the SF Giants), and all those going to and/or coming back from Italy were queried on earthquakes (Dave Heard, Rick Stromberg, Manny Carbahal). Manny then dove for the mic and pried it from Dennis’ hands so that we could move onto our speaker.

Jim Belenis introduced our speaker Rob Norris, the Senior Director of Development – Major Gifts at the UCD Athletic Department.  Rob gave us the background on his journey, which started in undergrad at UCD and then to Ohio and now back to UCD. UC Davis has 23 sport teams.  Funding for those teams comes from sponsorships, the NCAA, licensing, ticket sales, and development.  Development comes from three major sources, the Annual Fund (sustained annual gifts), major gifts, and Alumni Stewardship and Events.

Draw of the Day. Birthday boy John Morgan won a free breakfast from draw of the day, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief since the pot is up to $215.

Next week’s topic is sensitivity training. Kidding, it’s Dr. Mark Schwartz, Director of the John Muir Institute at UC Davis.  8:01AM meeting adjourned.

Please take a minute to review your vocation below and please email Meaghan Likes with any updates.
