Good morning, another glorious day of reporting for the Get Up and Go… except your reporter wasn’t getting up and going anywhere real fast last Friday morning.  The last week of the California Legislative Session is always an interesting blend of high stress, boredom and complete uncertainty of what is happening next.  Good old fashion death march as they like to say.  So here is what your reporter was doing instead of diligently listening to speakers at Rotary.

Wow, its 7:05am… working past midnight most nights this week has taken it’s toll – time for the double espresso.  There will be at least two more of those before this reporter feels semi-normal.  Got to run though, there is an unscheduled hearing this morning that I have to cover.  Two bills that I have to make sure die, one bill that I have to get language into for a client (which will be tough now with Prop 54 in place), and two more bills that I have to get through two houses and to the Governor before things end tonight.  Speaking of which, I have to remember to put money into the pool for when I think the legislature ends tonight.  Silly kids think this will be over before midnight since there are not that many bills to deal with and the house rules say it all ends by midnight.  They are forgetting the Golden Rule which is that there are no rules when it comes to the Legislature unless it’s in the Constitution and its been litigated.  My bet is sometime between 2:15-2:30am – hope I’m right because everyone else thinks this party ends by 12:15am. (This Reporter was spot on the money for ending time – free lunch is going to taste good.  And yes, the Assembly waived its rule about end time at 11:55pm but the Senate forgot to do so… could get awkward this fall when someone sues over the passage of SB 54 related to Sanctuary State Status).

Hmm, its now 2pm and I need to eat breakfast/lunch.  I’ve got one bill bottled up, got promises for language for next year in another bill, and the two other bills that I need to get passed that are still waiting to be taken up.  What day is it – Friday?  Was I supposed to do something this morning… oh no, I forgot to go to Rotary and I was supposed to be the reporter today.  Crap.

Well here’s my best guess…..

Meeting probably started around 7:05am with a lovely rendition of America the Beautiful.  Announcements – there were many.  When does this club not have announcements?  Oh wait, we have to go back and do visitors and guests – almost forgot.  Now back to announcements – Clay Brandow rode his bike someplace in Yolo and sent a postcard to prove it.  Clay is on a mission to single-handily keep the US Postal Service afloat… that State Pension must pay well.

September 30th is Oktoberfest.  Club members probably wore meaningful attire and asked for volunteers.  I could make a snide comment about attire, but I’ve been told to keep it classy.

Chuck Snipes is probably still looking for volunteers to read aloud a banned book, September 23, see Chuck for more details.

And I am sure there were other meaningful announcements, but hey, I wasn’t there so probably not that important.  Remember, September 30th is Oktoberfest.  Sell tickets and please don’t be like John Carbahal and hand out tickets to the homeless residents of Davis… it just gets awkward when some random guys is pushing Manny out of the way to get his 10th beer.  That was a fun Oktoberfest though!

There were Sergeants – I am sure it was witty as usual (in their minds at least) and that they raised lots of money. Speaking of raising lots of money.  Go read Dan Carson's article here and raise some money for the foundation.  Manny and Will were up to no good as usual.... Andrew was applauded for his dapper sense of style. In terms of Happy Bucks, someone was happy to have made it around the sun one more time (especially Skunk Island), and someone else was happy to have been married for another year. But really... Tyson Hubbard was rightfully happy for his recent promotion to partner!! Rose was rightfully happy for Chuck Snipes getting John a new bike (trik?) and John still looking good in spandex.  Bill Kopper was happy to be home from a long vacation bike riding around Canada.  Brodie was happy for a wonderful trip to Iceland. Larry Olsen was (un)happy that Dr. G let him (made him?) keep his pants on for a cat bite?  Nancy was happy for her foreign exchange student visit. And others were happy too...

I’ve been told that our Speaker was an attorney, Holly Cooper, former student of Bruce Wolk’s, who talked about Immigration Policies. She brought with her a bright young student who talked about DACA.   Timely topic… wished I could have been there to hear the discussion – wonder if anyone walked out like the week prior? Good times!  This reporter would have loved to asked about how the impending passage of SB 54 (basically sanctuary status for entire State of CA, which has now passed and is awaiting signature by the Governor) was going to further poke the sleeping bear that is the current administration.  Your reporter will save the political discussion for another time when he actually watches the audience walk out of the room.   That’s all for this week.  I hope I can attend next time I am the reporter. (So do we!!)
