The Rotary Club of Los Osos presents its annual Family Fun Fair in honor of Grandparents Day on Sunday September 7th from 12-4 pm at the South Bay Community Center & Park in Los Osos. Admission is free for this celebration of the generations with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are games for kids to win tickets they can exchange for face painting, prizes or even a hot dog meal. Activities also include a Monster Petting Zoo, the Symphony Petting Zoo, Reptile Petting Zoo, Insect Petting Zoo, Youth Soccer Shoot Out and much more. Meals will be available for purchase. Live Music for all to enjoy from 2-4 pm. A raffle with a Central Coast Staycation Package, among other prizes, to support the good work of Rotary Club of Los Osos in both local and world communities.

For the 29th year your Rotary Club of Los Osos merrily presents the Senior Holiday Dinner on Monday, December 9th at the South Bay Community Center 2180 Palisades in Los Osos. All Los Osos Seniors are welcome for this turkey dinner with all the trimmings compliments of the Rotary Club of Los Osos as a gift to the seniors in our community. SLO Symphony Executive Director, Catherine Lansdowne presented an update on the upcoming symphony season programs and Music Education Director Abraham Perez described the many symphony outreach programs for our youth. RC of Los Osos member, Dawn Addis was awarded the "People of Action" Award by President Barbara Morningstar at the first meeting of the new year on January 11th. Dawn is one of the Founders of the Women's March SLO and is a newly elected member of the Morro Bay City Council.
Members Leonard Moothart and Michelle Feldman brought family along to decorate the Rotary Float titled "Service Rocks" for the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade. They were joined by Rotarians Crystel Chesney of RC Cambria and Adrienne Hawkinson RC Templeton to make up the Group 11 team this year. The theme of the Rotary International float was "Service Rocks" emphasizing the Rotary principle of "Service Above Self"
For the 28th year The Rotary Club of Los Osos offers it’s annual gift to the community by hosting a free Holiday Dinner for Los Osos Seniors. The halls will be decked, the singers will sing and a dinner of turkey and all the trimmings will be served. The persistent winds of late allowed a lot of trash to accumulate in the ice plant of LOVR. Our club decided not only to clean up the trash but cut back the nasty ice plant. It gave us quite the challenge but the results speak for themselves! Great job everyone!

Record attendance, new venue and record proceeds added to the success of the Rotary Club of Los Osos' Annual Scholarship Dinner for 2018. It was a beautiful evening in a beautiful place and beautiful space. Windows on the Water did a terrific job with the food and the service for the nearly 100 guests in attendance. The Club is able to increase the number of scholarships this year for the graduating seniors from Los Osos at Morro Bay High School and Pacific Beach High School. Congratulations to Jim and Linda Quesenberry for spearheading such a wonderful event for such a great cause.

The Los Osos Rotary Club provides the clean up crew with the Rotary At Work spirit. The parade was a wonderfully fun, local Holiday experience that Los Ososans look forward to every year, especially the kids!
The Rotary Club of Los Osos had there first litter clean up since Adopting the section of LOVR between Pine and South Bay Blvd. We made quick work of the planned section. We plan to pick up a section every 2nd Saturday morning of the month at 9:00.
These fine young men got creative and took their bright smiles and kind hearts and went out and sold a bunch of Raffle Tickets for the Los Osos Rotary Club - Jaime our new exchange student from Spain, Maceo from Morro Bay and older brother Marcel outbound exchange student from Morro Bay. A redwood has fallen. Robert Michael Wright, "Mike," passed away quite unexpectedly on June 26, 2017, at the young age of 68 due to sudden cardiac arrest. Mike was truly a giant in the community and a friend to all. He will be greatly missed!

Will Van Krakenburg, President of the Templeton Rotary Club. He spoke on our joint project in Penipe, Ecuador, just outside Riobamba run by Sister Margarita. The local Rotary club build a chicken coop for eggs and meat which is now self- sustaining, working with a trusted beneficiary and full accountability. Total cost of project $4,201.20.

Marina is working on a 'coding' app to connect restaurants and stores to charities to help prevent food waste. The school she attends is an environmental school which teaches sustainability by 'hands on' experence while offering AP and Honors classes in core subjects. She has been involved in Girl Scouts since she was five and the Coding Project is part of a Girl Scout International project. She plans to continue studies in college and eventually plans to apply for the Peace Corps.
The Los Osos Community Coalition is a group that brings together representatives of Los Osos organizations, to work together for the fulture.
January was the first public meeting of the Los Osos Homeless/Poverty Outreach Committee. The topics we covered were: warming centers, monthlly dinners, the County Homeless Count, and basic needs. Many service organizations are working with LOCC to represent and with with a Community Resource Center.
Linda is the founder of Especial Consulting, her Community organizing skills have always been active in our county. The Los Osos Community Coaltion started in June 2016 is going strong. We are accomplishing our goals one by one. The Los Osos Resource Center opened Jan 23 with the help of People Helping People. Homeless/Poverty outreach committee met for the first time last month we are off to a great start helping people in our community. The coalition database has 70 people and the meetings are well attended. I am supervising the Resource Center and training the wonderful volunteers in information and referral. This has kept me busy and is my gift to my community.

At age 13, Lake Tahoe swim record at 14.5 hours as preparation for Guinness World record English Channel swim following "all kinds of rules", avoiding schools of fish feeling the fire of a Man of War jelly fish on her elbow. Learning how to swim while sleeping - psychologically swim "into the light" so begin the longest 36 hour swim at night.
Lee is our neighbor of 20 years active artist involved with 4-H.

Meeting in The Hub at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA with Rotary Peace Fellow, Bianca Neff (l) and former Atascadero, CA DG (2014-2015), Loretta Butts. Bianca is also the founder and Ex. Director of Petra Peacebuilders. Bianca and Loretta are working to help other Rotary Peace Fellows graduates to become more involved in their local Rotary Clubs for support & understanding of the work Peacebuilders are doing worldwide.
The company Probat is a natural gas drum roaster that can roast up to one hundred and fifty pounds at one time. It replaced our 1947 UG-22 roaster when production tripled six years ago. Four thousand roasted beans are required for one pound of coffee. 1.2 billion coffee beans move through this roaster gate every year.
Barbara Morningstar is proudly inducted into our club by our esteemed DG Nick Frankle.
Nick delivered a motivating speech to our club after a warm introduction by Gil Ingleheart. He talked with passion and commitment about his transformation into a Rotarian and the opportunity Rotary gives us all to turn our dreams into reality. He received a standing ovation.
Paws 4 A Cause presented Nichols, a yellow Labrador retriever, to Bruce Hulin in April. Nichols will assist Bruce in his daily activities and be a companion to help him deal with post-traumatic stress from serving in the Vietnam War. Nichols knows about 65 commands and helps Bruce around the house and out in public.
Paws 4 A Cause partners with the group New Life K9s" which helps train service dogs for veterans with PTSD.
This year's float at the 4th of July parade will honor Paws 4 a Cause and our Veterans as it participates in the parade. This year parade theme is Red, White and Blue – Cayucos Loves You.

The girls were alone. Their families were dead, or gone, or lost in the broken landscape of southern Sudan. They had nowhere to turn, and no one to turn to. Some lived in the market, others in the cemetery. When Cathy Groenendijk saw them, she couldn’t help herself. She offered them tea, then some food, then a place to sleep in her guesthouse.
RI President K.R. Ravindran chose Be a Gift to the World as his theme for 2015-16. Ravindran urges Rotary members to give the gifts of time, talent, and knowledge to improve lives in communities across the globe. "Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world."
Each month of the calendar year is celebrated in Rotary with a different theme, this month we celebrate the ‘Change Over’ of a new Club president and officers.
Each club throughout the Rotary world is encouraged to concentrate on programs to promote each of these months.
Rotary focuses on Community Service and promotes International Peace and Understanding. By celebrating each month and using these themes as a guide, Rotarians can ensure that all of the various programs of Rotary are administered throughout the entire year.

The final month of every Rotary year is Fellowship Month. This is a fitting designation since fellowship is particularly to the forefront with changeovers being very much the priority in June.
Fellowship is of course one of the five core values of Rotary, the others being service, diversity, integrity and leadership. Yet in so many clubs there is a real objection to the use of the word fellowship and I know of some clubs where the use of the word will require the person concerned to make a donation to the fines box.
It seems those who find the word objectionable see it as one of those legacy words that define old Rotary and inconsistent with new Rotary. That said no one seems to have been able to identify or even invent a word that comes close to all that is implied in the word fellowship. Certainly the term goes back a long way – apparently to the twelfth century from the Middle English word felaweshipe or feolahschipe, meaning companion!

Jeff became City of Salinas, Community & Economic Development Director in 2007. At that point he had nearly 20 years experience and specialized in Business Retention & Expansion. He has an MBA from Notre Dame and a BBA from Eastern Michigan University and a Certification as Economic Developer (CEcD). He has been married for over 50 years with a son and daughter grown and 3 grandchildren.
Rescue missions and emergency aid continue to arrive in Nepal after a massive earthquake hit the country on 25 April, killing at least 4,000 people and injuring thousands more. The 7.8-magnitude quake, the worst to hit Nepal in more than 80 years, has affected 8 million people in the country's 39 districts, including 1.4 million needing food assistance, according to government officials.
Sunday, 12 April, marks 60 years since the Salk polio vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent. In that time, the number of polio cases has dropped by 99 percent worldwide. With just three countries remaining polio-endemic, we are closer than ever to eradicating this crippling disease.
The week of February 2 and finishing up in the rain on Saturday February 7; wet Rotarians from Los Osos collected another 5.5 tons (11,000 pounds) of Electronic Waste from their neighbors in Los Osos. The Rotary Club of Los Osos began their e-waste recycling program in January 2009 and so far have collected 60 TONS of discarded electronic devices.

ROTARY CELEBRATES 108TH ANNIVERSARY, HIGHLIGHTS GAINS AGAINST POLIO

Rotary's 108th anniversary on 23 February marks a year of both achievements in the fight to eradicate polio and a stepped-up commitment to finish the job.
Worldwide, 222 polio cases were reported in 2012, a little more than one-third of the 650 cases reported in 2011. India marked its second year without polio on 13 January. Overall, the annual incidence of polio has decreased more than 99 percent since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched in 1988. Then polio infected about 350,000 children per year.
Rotary International President-elect Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang was inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucious who said: “It is better to light a single candle, than to sit and curse the darkness.”
Who is our Family of Rotary? They are fellow club members, spouses, children, parents, family of deceased Rotarians, youth exchange students and families, Rotarians, Interactors and Rotaractors and ambassadorial scholars.
Why does the Family of Rotary matter? It matters because it is about community. The community we live in, the worldwide community and the community of Rotarians. When we share in community, your problems and joys become mine too. If we are to live out the Rotary ideal, to create a better world, we must start with the family. We need to care for all the members of our Rotary family, because without each other there is no community.

Months of physical therapy have allowed Samir to keep active with his siblings. He loves to play outside, and his favorite game is chase. Since 1995, when India held its first national polio immunization campaign, 2.3 million vaccinators have visited 209 million households to immunize 170 million children every year. Their efforts will help provide a polio-free future for generations to come throughout Southeast Asia.

It was a series that displayed a balanced offensive effort for the Dodgers, who got contributions from up and down the lineup. Juan Uribe, who hit .375 in the series, provided the game-winner with his clutch two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Uribe's blast was preceded by YasielPuig's opposite-field double, his eighth hit of the series. Twitter made sure that Puig was feeling the love as well.
Clayton Kershaw, who started on three days' rest, gutted it out for six innings, allowing two unearned runs on just three hits. His gritty effort kept the Dodgers close, and people let Kershaw know what they thought of his effort as well on Twitter.
All in all, this was a performance that was impressive. The Dodgers hit .333 for the series, and the bullpen provided shutdown relief when called upon.
The Dodgers will now have four days to relax and prepare for their NLCS opponent, to be decided on Wednesday. Twitter users gave their opinion about who they'd rather see.
The celebration will continue Monday night, but the Dodgers know they have much work to do. They'll be back at work, looking for their first World Series Championship in 25 years.

Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said today that there were between 12,000 and 13,000 homes destroyed or damaged not including all the businesses and schools destroyed as well.
Any funds received by our Rotary Bi-District 501c3 Foundation will be used exclusively for the benefit of those damaged by this terrible event.
Construction has started on a new community garden at 1968 11th Street in Los Osos.
Called the Blue C Community Garden, it is a project of San Luis Obispo-based nonprofit organization Ecologistics in partnership with the Rotary Club of Los Osos.
It will have space for 15 plots, a permaculture demonstration garden and an ocean-friendly garden.
Twelve U.S. Rotarians were honored at the White House on 5 April as Champions of Change for their efforts to improve communities locally and around the world.
As part of the daylong event, more than 160 Rotarians attended a morning round of briefings by government officials on topics including polio eradication, health, violence prevention, and the environment.
April 25, global leaders and philanthropists signaled their confidence in a new polio endgame strategy by pledging close to three-quarters of the plan’s projected US$5.5 billion cost to eradicatepolio within the next six years.
The new plan capitalizes on the best opportunity to eradicatepolio, with the number of children paralyzed by this disease at the lowest level ever: just 223 cases in 2012 and only 22 so far this year.

Bill served as President of the Rotary Sunrise Club of Merced and has been the on-going music director and active member of the Rotary Club of Los Osos.
Bill and his wife Clytis performed at Rotary International Conventions, District 5240 Conferences making many international life-long friends. He and Clytis also performed at the annual Rotary Club Community Holiday Dinner every December.
A memorial service was March 2, 2013, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 490 Los Osos Valley Road in Los Osos.

Today for the second year in a row, India is without polio cases. For the past two years India is polio free, a major achievement in the country that was once the world's epicentre of polio. The number of polio-endemic countries, those which have never stopped indigenous wild poliovirus transmission, are Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Rotarians give up time and their own money to travel and immunize children against polio on a (NID) National Immunization Day in these countries. An NID is a massive, coordinated campaign that aims to interrupt the circulation of poliovirus by administering the oral vaccine to every child in thehighest risk age group (normally under the age of five). Polio-usually organize multiple rounds of NIDs annually for at least three years.

Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the events, this year our club is hosting two students to Camp Ramah in Ojai beginning Thursday April 19-22.
Fellow Rotarian and upcoming guest speaker Larry Emrich participated in our District 5240's National Immunization Day (NID) in the Uttar Pradesh region with Anil Garg this past February. Larry will be our guest speaker on June 8th.
From his journal he writes, I have a hard time with India. The cities large and small are enormously impacted with people, motorcycles, rickshaws, cars, trucks, buses, vehicles of all kinds, propelled by internal combustion engines, water pumps, and camels, and yet there is a peace there, a pervasive serenity. You can find it; you can feel it in the commotion, the traffic, the ubiquitous horns, the bumpy roads and, in February, the dust. You can see it in the movements of the people, in the eyes of the old men, in the pace of life. At least, I feel it, but never at first. It seeps into one’s soul after days of restless sleep, after driving hours to get a few hundred kilometers, after walking countless blocks and inhaling pounds of dust, after seeing the kids, after following the health care workers in the villages as they perform their duties, door to door, talking with parents and vaccinating all the children against polio. India is an enigma: serene and chaotic.

Rotary International and ShelterBox, a grassroots disaster relief organization, signed a project partner agreement this month, allowing the two organizations to collaborate more closely to provide relief and temporary shelter to survivors of natural disasters.
Each ShelterBox typically provides a tent designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, stove, water purification kit, blankets, tools, and other necessities to help a family survive for six months or more after a disaster.

Rotary club members worldwide are cautiously celebrating a major milestone in the global effort to eradicate polio. India, until recently an epicenter of the wild poliovirus, has gone one year without recording a new case of the crippling, sometimes fatal, disease.
The District 5240 Symposium to Eliminate Poverty Sustainably (STEPS) will be held on Saturday, January 28 at UCSB.
STEPS registration is free to current Rotary club members, Interact clubs (supported by their sponsoring clubs) and your special guests.
If club members have questions about the amazing work that Rotary International is doing in eliminating extreme poverty, STEPS will enable them to hear from people on the front lines.
If prospective members want to know how Rotary International is making a difference in the world, STEPS is the place to learn.
If Rotarians want to know how their contributions to The Rotary Foundation are being used globally, STEPS will provide the answers.

Carlos Früm, governor of District 6440 (Illinois, USA) and a member of the Rotary Club of Northbrook, teaches business principles and entrepreneurship to Maya high school students as part of his district’s ongoing service project in Guatemala.
"Vocational service gives Rotarians the opportunity to help others escape poverty and gain a measure of self-respect," Früm says. "As business and professional leaders, we have a duty to lead and encourage good ethics through vocation."

There will be two tours, the first is a tour of the grounds and outside area and an easy walk, time 9-11:30. The second tour will be of the power plant which also includes lunch, time 9-2:30. Lots of walking and steps to climb.

As of June 2009, they have collected over 20 tons of e-waste. 40,000 pounds of computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, fax machines and cell phones were the common electronic products collected on a Saturday morning in January or June. Some of these items would have remained in garages, the side of the road or our local landfills. Of the 40,000 pounds, 26% silica or glass, 23% plastics, 20% Ferrous metal, 14% aluminum, and 17% of various metals including lead, cooper, zinc, mercury and cadmium.
It is a good idea to look at e-waste not as waste, but as resource. Useful materials such as glass, copper, and aluminum, plastic and other components can often be extracted and reused. Some manufacturers have even referred to e-waste as a valuable source of materials.
This is the Club's Community Service Project and fund-raiser.

The 102nd Rotary International Convention, at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, State of Louisiana, USA just concluded this week. The convention’s theme was “Let the Good Times Roll … Again!”. I am certain that Rotary’s brand of service and fellowship made every convention attendant a life-enriching, life-changing and life-fulfilling experience, not only for the Rotarians but even to the guests and family members in attendance.
The President of the Rotaract Club of San Luis Obispo will be visiting us in the month of May to give us an update about their Club which we co-sponsored last year.
The Rotaractors have done a lot of great projects to date and are currently promoting their May 14th international project, a fundraiser poker run and concert & BBQ in SLO to send 10 bicycles to a third world country through our project partner World Bicycle Relief.
Electronic Waste Recycling is our Community Service Project & Fund-raiser on Saturday July 9 from 9-1 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 490 Los Osos Valley Road at Pine Ave.

The Rotary Japan Disaster Recovery Fund has raised more than US$500,000 as of 25 March.
In response to the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March, The Rotary Foundation has established the Rotary Japan 2011 Disaster Recovery Fund, which will support long-term recovery projects in affected areas.
Rotarians and non-Rotarians can donate online. Clubs and districts can contribute cash and District Designated Fund (DDF) allocations to the fund. The deadline for contributing to the fund is 31 December 2011.
The Rotary Club of Los Osos will be hosting the Academy Award nominee short subject, The Final Inch at the South Bay Library May 12, at 6:30 pm. The Polio presentation will include not only this powerful film but a talk by Michelle Caretto; an actual Iron Lung will be on display. Refreshments will be served.

Our first Eco-Rotary informational meeting is scheduled for the Flying Dutchman Thursday February 24th at 5 PM. Appetizers will be $5 and the meeting should last about an hour.
Learn what an Eco Rotary Club is, a Power Point presentation and a proposed Eco project will be discussed.
You may wish to stay for dinner and visit afterwards. Our gracious host Paul Van Beurden would appreciate it, too.

Aminu Ahmed, a polio survivor, is the Chairman and Founder of KPVTA (Kano Polio Victims Trust Association). KPVTA (their motto is "Our Handicaps Exist in the Mind") is a non-profit that provides advocacy and vocational opportunities for polio survivors in northern Nigeria. They also assist their members with scholarships for their children, vocational training, work, etc.

Julius Achon, Uganda Children's Fund
At the age of 12 and living in Uganda, Julius Achon was kidnapped by a rebel coalition, The Lord's Resistance Army. Julius was forced to become a child soldier or face execution by his captors. Fortunately for him, he was able to escape approximately three months later. Once home he began running barefoot for fun. At the age of 17, his talent was discovered by Ugandan sports officials.
The Rotary Club of Los Osos held the Third Annual Old Goats & Little Kids Team Relay on Sunday September 12th. A 5K walk/run began at 9:00 winding through the streets of Baywood Park.
Grandparent's Day Raffle tickets were sold for $2.00 each, this was the Club's big fund-raiser for local and international projects.
With a final score in the final game of 3-1, the winning ticket was #61 sold by Albert Malek to his co-worker John Consoli. A message was left for John with an invitation to collect his $1000 CASH PRIZE at our meeting on Friday. Congratulations, John!!!
The tickets have been sold for our World Series Pool 2010 and we are now waiting in anticipation of the big day. The World Series 2010 teams are the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers. The winner has a chance to win $1000.00!!!

The District Governor gave a moving and inspiriting talk to Los Osos Rotarians and guests. Recognizing Honorary Rotarian Catherine Topp, Member Marge Van Beurden and awarding Victoria Pacaoan with a Paul Harris Fellow given by President Dick Pacaoan.
DG Deepa was so impressed by our 'singing Club' that she has invited our Club to sing at the District Conference in October at the Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo on Friday October 22nd.

It's almost time to kick out the old president. Daudi's days are numbered and we will have a special demotion party in his honor. The date is July 10th. The place is the Swift house up on the hill (Dick has e-mailed directions) The food will be potluck with drinks and the main course provided by the club. Marge and Annie will have the sign-up list available. We will also have a hat contest, and Albert is wanting us to karaoke the afternoon away. Bring your significant other and enjoy some good times as we roast President Kaliisa and usher in President Pacaoan, fresh from their Montreal travels.

Morro Bay High School students met with Rotarians from the Rotary Clubs of Morro Bay and Los Osos about sponsoring & forming an Interact Club on campus. Mr. Badrigan has agreed to be the faculty advisor and meetings will be held at lunch time in his room. No date has been set for regular meetings.
The Morro Bay High School students that our Club sponsored in April attended RYLA Camp in Ojai. They will be speaking to our Club on Friday May 21.

Our speaker will tell us about what is going on with the "Bay News" and the value of local community newspapers, newbie Dan Gilmore gets to pay like every other member (fine mistress take note), our 50-50 pot will get near the $300 mark, so it will be worth an extra raffle ticket or two, and we might get to hear about the District Water Conference.

Steffanie Medina and Jessica Dell from Creative Mediation spoke about the services they provide for San Luis Obispo County. Creative Mediation is a non-profit organization that has free and low-cost services for anyone wanting their services.

The Rotary International Foundation established a Haiti earthquake fund U.S. Rotarians & Americans can donate to help with short & long-term recovery efforts. Make contributions to the earthquake victims in Haiti. Almost 100% of your donation will go to Haiti, there is a 1.3% administrative fee.
As Vocational Chair, Carolyn Mueller today spoke about the various scholarship programs Rotary International has for students as well as young adults. Our Club sponsors an annual dinner to raise scholarship money for Morro Bay High School students both academic & vocational scholars.
RI has sponsored the high school student exchange program since 1929. Students are 16 to 19 years old, attend high school in their host country, live with ideally three host's families, learn a new language, experience daily life as part of the community and maybe travel. This is a life-changing experience for the students with life-long ties to their host country & family.

I am very proud of the work you do in our community and around world. You make me very proud to be your president and a member of the most far sighted and active Rotary Club in the world.
I want to use this opportunity to remind each one of us that the majority of people in our community do not have the same information or contacts we have outside of our community and yet they would very much love to help out when a tragedy like that in Haiti occurs.
I am asking that each one of us be open minded and look out for opportunities to help others so that they can also help.
Our contribution to the Haitian relief effort will go a long way if we reach out to our community and ask for their involvement.
We know that our district is collecting funds to send to Haiti and we can help them by passing on that information to our community. Please emphasize the fact that 100 percent of all monies received by Rotary will be sent to the intended recipient. That is how Rotary operates. No overheads and no administrative costs.

A conference on drinking water projects underway in District 5240 and other groups in Central California at work on Drinking water. Find out where rotary International is going on 'Drinking Water Funding'.
With a new year started this is a perfect time to promote Rotary in our community and workplace. Do you have your 'Four Way Test' plaque hung up in your office, if not dust it off and hang it on your office wall? Wear your Rotarian pin or your 'Stop Polio' pin or bracelet, these are small ways to show you are a Rotarian when someone asks you, 'What's Rotary?"
Jim Lewis spoke passionately about the International Project we are working on together with the Rotary Clubs of Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark Morning, Murrieta Club in District 5330 and the host Club Calcutta Metropolitan. We will be working in Niranjanpur in Naihati, a remote village in West Bengal, India, 50 KMs north of Kolkata.
Tomorrow morning (Friday December 18) will be our last for 2009. We will be dark the following two weeks. We are scheduled to have a great program tomorrow and can share in the joys of serving our seniors this last Tuesday and the sorrows of a parade rain-out last Saturday.
Remember to think about a last-minute gift of a Rotary Scholarship dinner ticket for someone on your list. They are $75 each and the dinner at 10th Street Grill on February 8, 2010 is always a memorable one.

This year's Poverty Conference was held at St. John's Regional Medical Center where International & Domestic Hunger was discussed along with solutions that Rotarians are busy working on today.
I was most inspired by Rose Hayden Smith's presentation; she spoke about Hunger in the U.S. and locally. Her goal, our goal for food security starts at home, in our schools and the community.
Guest Speaker Leslie McKinley, Rotarian and Director for "Community Action Partnership" formerly known as EOC. They have been a working non-profit in our community for 45 years.
"Community Action Partnership" is working in our backyard at Sunnyside School with the 'Head Start' program, a comprehensive child and family development services.
Michelle reminded us that Polio is the most devastating disease in the world and that there is no cure only prevention through immunization. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, almost always protects a child for life in the endemic countries, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria.
The RI Foundation is divided into two components the 'World Fund' and 'Share'. Under the 'World Fund' umbrella is 'PolioPlus', the Children's Fund, and the Rotary Centers for International Studies.
Betsy Nash is a Rotarian and member of the Rotary Monday Club in San Luis Obispo. Professionally she is the HR Consultant at United Staffing Assn. as a
Trainer, MC, Technical Advisor, & Volunteer at Various Ventures. She is also President at Human Resources Assn. of the Central Coast and I would like to add humorist.
Barry VanderKelen from the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation explained the history and the works of this non-profit foundation for our County.
The Asian Journal Foundation, Pangasinan Brotherhood, and United Pangasinanes Association Inc. are collaborating to organize a relief program for the victims of Typhoon 'Pepeng'. The Catholic Women's League in the Pangasinan will receive and distribute the items.
Dick Pacaoan was just designated as the drop-off coordinator for San Luis Obispo County. The victims of the typhoon need basic items to help them rebuild their lives. If we can get the community to donate these items, it would be an exceptional way to help those affected by the floods.
Michael Shaffran, LCSW (and new member of the Morro Bay Club) shared his experiences a licensed therapist. Michael told us that he works with couples, families with a concentration on boys and men. He works primary with boys and men because he feels they need a male therapist and the mentorship.
Chumsum took the mystique out of Rotary and talked about the leadership & structure of Rotary International and the Foundation.
Rotary International is governed by the RI President, President elect and 17 directors. By the way did you know that the Rotary president is required to live in Evanston, IL during his year as president? It's a good bit of trivia to know if the Fine Mistress is asking.
Guest speaker Heather Frankle from the Rotary Club of Simi Sunrise spoke passionately about the '5 Points Program' for Rotary to help eliminate extreme poverty.

Tim Cleath of the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, engineer & geologist spoke about the Water Wells built by three mechanical engineering teams at Cal Poly that will help Rotary and Lifewater continue their endeavors to bring clean drinking water to thousands of people and help save children lives.
Luz Maria gave an inspiriting and heartfelt speech about hardships and achieving your goals through Rotary. She spoke about the importance of membership, Rotaract and the Foundation. Learn more by attending the District Conference in Ventura Oct 23-25.

The persistent winds of late allowed a lot of trash to accumulate in the ice plant of LOVR. Our club decided not only to clean up the trash but cut back the nasty ice plant. It gave us quite the challenge but the results speak for themselves! Great job everyone!
