What is Literacy?

March is Literacy Month. Rotary International sets aside the month of March to recognize literacy and its importance in our everyday lives.
Literacy is the ability to read and write and the understanding of functional concepts.
Literacy empowers people.
Nearly 800 million people worldwide over the age of 15 can neither read nor write.

Rotary supports literacy whether donating dictionaries, building schools, or acting as tutors, Rotarians are active in efforts to reduce illiteracy around the world.
Rotary literacy projects each year, Rotarians carry out thousands of projects to expand and improve early childhood literacy and education programs for both boys and girls. And to improve the ability of teachers to teach and empower schools to meet the needs of students in the community.
As Los Osos Rotarians we donate time and energy helping our local communities by donating books to our schools, international projects includes books to the Philippines and building a library and computer lab.
Each speaker that gives a presentation to our weekly meetings is honored with a book given in their name to Los Osos local schools and quarterly we collect books for the Philippines library.
This year we will also be asking students in the Middle School to participate in Rotary's Four Way Test Contest. We are also working on a five year international project that includes a resource center.
