Shirley attends Poverty Conference

This year's Poverty Conference was held at St. John's Regional Medical Center where International & Domestic Hunger was discussed along with solutions that Rotarians are busy working on today.
I was most inspired by Rose Hayden Smith's presentation; she spoke about Hunger in the U.S. and locally. Her goal, our goal for food security starts at home, in our schools and the community.

Rose spoke about the Victory Gardens in England during WW II and that they are still thriving today and about the Gorilla Gardening in many inner cities. This is a small step to improve hunger, health and mental stability.
After the conference about 30 Rotarians & guests went to the Ventura's Food Share for a tour of the warehouse that feeds over 15,000 people a day in Ventura County. We were shown many of the food that is donated by grocery stores, from the shipping docks and community donations. We helped by sorting canned & dried foods.
