Ingo's birthday poemThey say, it’s your birthday It’s a lovely day too. Oh TRACHTENBERG, your position is classic Come and show me the magic Of your birthday song. Cry baby cry, Make mother MEG sigh She’s old enough to know better So cry baby cry. There’s a fog upon Elay And my friends have lost their way Soon will be the break of day Sitting here in blue JAY way. Oh komm doch, komm zu mir Geburtstagskind BOOCHEVER Wir sind in einem anderen Land Komm, gib mir Deine Hand. What would JIM think, if I sang out of tune Would the HUNTER stand up and walk out on me? O I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends O I get by with a little help from my friends. The long and winding road That leads to your door, - in Orange Texas - Will never disappear, I’ve seen that road before It always leads me to MIKE'S door. JORDAN came in through the bathroom window Protected by a silver spoon But now she has birthday and wanders By her own Manhattan Beach lagoon. Yesterday, all DONN'S troubles seemed so far away, Now it looks as though they’re here to stay, Oh DONN believes in yesterday. Say the word and you’ll be free Say the word and be like me Say the word I’m thinking of Have you heard the word is ROD. MARC likes to be, under the sea In an octopus’s garden in the shade, He’d let us in, knows where we’ve been, in his octopus’s garden in the shade. In the town, where HARRIS was born Lived a man, who sailed to sea And he told us, of his life as a BASS In the land of submarines. They say, it’s your birthday ... We hope you have enjoyed the show We're sorry but it's time to go We'd like to thank you once again It's getting very near the end. Sgt Pepper's only, Sgt Pepper's only Sgt Pepper's only Rotary Club Land! |

Jim's story for the June 25 BulletinMouse-Flavored Cat Food -- Jim Hallett It was Monday, June 18, 2018, and President Mark Burton listened attentively as Mark Lipps praised Rotarians for “priding ourselves on empathy,” which somehow led the always peripatetic Mark to cite as an example the age-old philosophical question, “Why don’t they make mouse-flavored cat food?”…..Thus launched hither and thither, we greeted Past President Bob Neubauer, who is now the president-elect of his Oregon Rotary Club, thereby establishing himself as more scattered than even Mark Lipps…..We also greeted our visitor from Redlands, and then moved on to a final Burtonian round of Happy Dollars. |
|
Jim's story for the June 18 BulletinClub Dues -by Jim Hallett It was Monday, June 11, 2018, and President Mark Burton stepped aside from the podium, where Keith Sultemeier reminded us of the inspiration of Teddy Roosevelt’s “In The Arena”. We finished our Club Assembly regarding future dues and ultimately approved by consensus an annual dues raise to $1150, with a raise to $10 for prepaid meals and $15 for at-the-door meals. Bob Stephenson started us out with a reminder that annual dues have stayed at $995 for five years. These dues finance club, not foundation, activities, covering meetings, social events and club operations. The Board will continue to address controllable expenses, but meeting costs are now beyond our full control. Additionally, RI and District dues are going up. $1150 should be a stable number for future years. |
|
Jim's story for the June 11 BulletinRichstone -by Jim Hallett It was Monday, June 4, 2018, and President Mark Burton looked on as Mike Doell reminded us of the momentous events of 1968, 50 years ago, not the least of which was the wedding of Sandy and Mike, which has resulted, inter alia, in three daughters and six grandkids…..Deb Robertson, somewhat outdone in this competition, brought husband Tom Chwalek with her to prove up her own 30 years of wedded bliss…..Then Mark Lipps, as usual, made clowns of us all, leading us in a June Birthday Wave…..Moving from the ridiculous to the sublime, we heard from Elizabeth Aguilar, volunteer coordinator for Richstone, accompanied by Development Director Allison Tanaka, who updated us on their work with children experiencing family violence (www.richstonefamily.org) . David Gendron presented them with our $1000 check. |

Water Filters Delivered in Puerto RicoWe deliver the first water filter yesterday to a community school in Caimito. This school serves high risk students, some are hearing impair and others are school dropouts being given a second chance to succeed. There are 240 students and 80 staff members and teachers. The students’ parents will be allowed to come and fill gallons of water to take drinking water home. When we got there a faculty member was in the process of explaining how to use the bucket water filters. The administration and faculty members all send their thanks to the Manhattan Beach Club for your generosity and they look forward to receiving you at their school soon. Three members of the San Juan Rotary Club went with me to deliver the donation, PDG Pepito Rivero and Gerry Cumpiano, Club Disaster Relief committee member. The trip to the mountain finished with me stepping into a fire ants nest and getting lost on our way down because the GPS did not have signal. No electricity up there! We had a good laugh. Overall it was a very gratifying trip. Once again thank you!! September Rotarians of the MonthLeft to Right - Superintendent Mike Matthews, Councilman Richard Montgomery, Principal Ben Dale and President Mark Burton President Mark said it’s normally difficult to choose a Rotarian of the Month, but this month his job was easy. He chose two Rotarians, Councilman Richard Montgomery and Superintendent of Schools Mike Matthews. Along with Dr. Ben Dale, Principal of Mira Costa High School, they led A.C.T., Aid Cleveland Texas, a massive effort to help a town flooded by Hurricane Harvey. We’ve read the newspaper accounts and Facebook posts about A.C.T. Many of us worked at drop off stations or drove to City Hall with supplies (I contributed baby supplies). But nothing prepared me for the story of what it was like in Cleveland, Texas, told to us by Ben and Richard, both Texas natives. Helping Ben’s hometown was something he felt compelled to do, Richard was the first to sign up, Mike helped mobilize the effort and the community of Manhattan Beach stepped up to the challenge. Seven trucks filled with supplies driven by Richard, Ben and others drove straight through to Cleveland, Texas. There was no FEMA, no Red Cross, just A.C.T. volunteers. The need was massive. When the distribution station opened up, 1,200 cars were already lined up, inching forward to save gas and pick up the supplies they needed so desperately. Mike and Richard – you make us proud to be Manhattan Beach Rotarians! |
|
Senator Ben Allen Speaks at RotarySenator Allen shares Rotary’s passion for lifesaving vaccinations. His father was a victim of polio, and Allen has been involved with the effort to tighten vaccination rules in California. He’s also sponsored an election reform bill, and chairs the education committee. He touched on a number of state issues – our interaction with the president (“I hope the governor and president will be able to work on infrastructure.”), the immigration debate (“40% of the state legislature are people of color.”), healthcare (“The state went all in; it’s quite a success story.”), and federal funds (“What happens if federal dollars come with strings attached?”).

It became the most popular game on the block. “Sullivan’s Rules” became the rules to play by in the sighted world, and that meant playing almost anything. The Amorok SocietyAn excellent presentation by Mr. G. E. M. Monro on the Amorok Society and the work they are doing in Bangladesh. "We teach very poor mothers how to read and write in their local language, we teach them English (necessary for economic advancement) and teach them math and social studies. We also teach them life skills such as health, nutrition, child care and conflict resolution. The mothers, many of whom have never before even held a pencil, attend school every day for 2 hours. Teachers, recruited from nearby neighbourhoods and trained by AS, use accelerated learning methods (using songs, drama, games). Neighbourhood houses (rooms) are used as schools. The mothers are then trained to become teachers of their own and their neighbours’ children, developing some of the learning materials themselves for use with the children. The small schoolrooms, when not being used for mothers’ classes, are used by the women to discuss issues of importance, as determined by them, and as a place for cottage industry work to increase family income. Working from the centre of the family out using accelerated learning methods (songs, pictures, drama) is a highly effective approach. Mothers come to understand and value education – learn how to create a positive learning environment for children, and they come to make better decisions in many areas for the family. Mothers report that they can now make better sense of their world and have become more highly-valued within their own homes and in the community."

The Two Bit CircusRotarian Les Silverman, Brent Bushnell from Two Bit Circus and President Kathleen. Another fantastic program. The carnival reimagined with robots, fire, and lasers to inspire young inventors in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. (STEAM) "You've heard of STEM... but we agree with John Maeda of RISD and MIT that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math aren't complete without Art. Our culture isn't doing enough to get kids interested in STEAM. As professional inventors, we rely on these disciplines every day, and want to share our excitement about them with kids young and old. Through years of building and demonstrating fun games we've learned no better way to get kids into STEAM than to show them an amazing time. When you say 'engineering' to most kids they zone out. But when you say 'lasers, robots, and fire,' you have their undivided attention." A great event coming to Los Angeles in April. |

One of Our 462 Loans Thru KivaThis is one of 462 Kiva loans that the club has participated. We still have zero defaults. It's interesting to look at loan in the US. The typical default rate is 10%.
A loan of $1,200 helped Greydi Isamar Amador Galagarza to pay for tutoring and to register her research paper.
21-year-old Greydi is single and studying her fifth year of a law degree at UCA. She is requesting her second loan to register her research paper which she will defend in order to obtain her degree. This entails a fair amount of time and money as she must buy educational materials and pay a tutor who will help her with her paper. In addition, she is carrying out an internship in the prison system which is outside of the city. She travels there three times a week. Greydi's biggest dream is to be able to finish her degree and help people who need her services. |
