President Lisa had some SAD news…due to unforeseen circumstances Magic in Giving is CANCELED!! APRIL FOOLS!!!! Lisa got us all on that one!! Coby McDonald said he was giving out pickleball paddle swats for those who had not “raised their paddles” to purchase tickets. Here’s to our sponsors so far! Bronze: Harrison Clay, Paul Rudy, LAcarGUY, CalPrivate (also sponsor of after-party photo booth).
Our Rotary Reflection for the meeting was by David Boochever. David is a 28-year member, and past president in 2002-2003. His father-in-law was a district governor in Northern California. John Van den Akker was his sponsor. Memories for David were being arrested by Officer Stephanie Martin for being the Santa on the Manhattan Beach Holiday Float. One of his many positions was International Service Director. He recalled that at the time he was president, there were about 65 members. They painted 10 school classrooms at a Compton elementary school.
Susan Adams presented the Manhattan Beach police officer awards, Officer of the Year and Professional Staff Member of the Year! Chief Rachel Johnson presented the Officer of the Year Award to Val and Kory Swanson, mother and brother of Officer Chad Swanson, who was killed in a traffic accident on his motorcycle, October 4th, on his way to work. Chad was 35, a 13-year veteran of Manhattan Beach PD, and an officer loved and respected by his peers. Chad was known for his great smile, sense of humor, and dedication to his job. Chad will also be remembered for his bravery while attending the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival on October 1, 2017. There, after he escorted his wife to safety, he attended to other patrons who had been hit by gunfire, applying tourniquets and rushing others to safety while being wounded himself. We also honored Barbara Rosenberger, Professional Staff Service Manager for the police department. She was honored for her over 30 years of service to the department…Note: Chief Johnson will be participating in the 2024 National Police Week in Swanson’s honor. Our club presented a check for $1,250 to the MB Police Officers Association.
Happy Dollars! Dine Around thank you from Barbara Matles to Bruce Greenspon for hosting a wonderful evening. Tim Hageman thanked the Jimmy Miller Foundation. New member John Bartlett gave $20 to honor MBPD. Jason Hearne was happy to give $$ for his daughter finding a new school and getting a scholarship as well!! Congrats Harper!! Norm Levin added his $20 as well!
Our speaker for the day was James Mattone with U.S. VETS. James jumped in at the last minute as our speaker, Program Coordinator Juan Alfonso Garcia, was unavoidably detained by a traffic closure on the 91 freeway. Thank you, James, for standing in!!! Great job. U.S. VETS’ mission is the successful transition of military veterans and their families through the provision of housing, counseling, career development and comprehensive support. They believe all veterans deserve every opportunity to live with dignity and independence. “It is our duty at U.S.VETS to deliver on our promise to always serve those who’ve served.“ Founded in 1993 by Stephen Peck, U.S. VETS is the nation’s largest non-profit provider of comprehensive services for at-risk and homeless veterans and their families.
