The Business of Sports Broadcasting

by Don Jung
Editor's note: Two members wrote notes this week. Enjoy their takes on our last meeting in August.

Christina Pascucci led the flag salute and gave the thought for the day. President John Acker then asked members who brought guests this morning, which included friends of Harrison Clay and Donn Ennis’ son.

Happy Dollars for Donn Ennis celebrating his 83rd Birthday, Harrison Clay for having his son go to college and Jason Hearne.

Deb Robertson talked about the resignation of Chris Ullman from MB Rotary and his memorable moments in the 45 years of being in our Rotary club since 1980.

John Acker mentioned that VetFest would be November 9th and the Pine Mountain Logs would be performing again. President John featured his “Who is this Rotarian?” segment and it turned out to be a young Dave Long. Our President mentioned a John Wooden saying and talked about the Rotarian Code of Conduct.

Harrison Clay introduced his neighbor and our guest speaker, Dan Finnerty. Dan has been a chief negotiator for the broadcasting rights to a number of major sports teams. He gave us the evolution of NBA Media Rights, Major League baseball media rights, and the breakdown of local versus national television rights for the various Los Angeles sports teams. It was interesting how the dollar value of these rights has increased dramatically over the past ten years to be a multi-billion dollar business.

After a question-and-answer period, Jay Harkenrider won the bottle of wine but School Superintendent John Bowes was unlucky in the cash drawing.

"Egg"-cellent News from the Rotary Nest!

by Bruce Greenspon

Rotarians, 🎤 it’s time for our weekly recap, where we’re serving up "grate" oatmeal, “egg-cellent” fluffy eggs, and some hearty fellowship—because nothing says camaraderie like bonding over the man behind our cable television bills. We’re “streaming’”good times all around! 🥣🤣 Christina Pascucci led us in the Pledge, with a thought of the day on champions. Christina is one of our newest members, and leading us in the Pledge is a “badge of courage” required to turn new members’ red badges, blue. Pledge your allegiance to awesomeness, Christina! Great job.

📢 President John Acker, without a “commercial’ break,” “tuned-in” to announce some special birthdays. Don Ennis, a member since 1973, is celebrating his “premium channel” 82nd birthday—because, at this age, he’s definitely in “high definition!” Meanwhile, our other Don, Don Jung, a member since 1991, “synced up” his birthday with Harris Bass, a member since 1996, making it a “pay-per-view event” worth celebrating. Happy birthday, guys! 🎉

Happy dollars were the talk of the morning! Tony Rogondino added money to the till on behalf of Jeff Serota, who “kicked off “ a soccer league this summer for a number of our fellow Rotarians, including Tarek Shaer, Paul Rudy, and Mark MaruyamaHarrison Clay chipped in for his oldest “chip” off the old block heading off to college, and, not to be outdone, Jason Hearne also celebrated “packing up” one of his children for college. 🎓

President John reminded us that our annual fundraiser, VetFest, is back this year on November 9th at Kinecta headquarters on Rosecrans Avenue, and we’re looking for volunteers.  No need to “change the channel”—just “click” on Debbie Goldberg’s email from August 30th for all the details!

Next up, Deb Robertson read a farewell poem from Chris Ullman who resigned his membership last month.  President John then tuned in to the 50/50 raffle, reminding us that it's time to “channel” your inner stock market guru. Pick your numbers wisely—because this is more than just a “remote” chance to win! Tickets are on sale every week, and, for just $20, you get to guess where the Dow Jones will sign off on May 2, 2025. The closest guess wins the jackpot, while the rest of the pot “streams” to the nonprofits we support. It’s a win-win, so subscribe to this opportunity today!

President John continues to “broadcast” the importance of the Rotary 4-Way Test, and this week was no exception. He “stream”-lined the message with a quote from Coach John Wooden: "Have character; don’t be a character." President John added, let’s make sure we’re all “in sync” with our code of conduct—no need to “buffer” when it comes to doing the right thing!

Harrison Clay introduced our guest speaker, Dan Finnerty, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Spectrum Networks. In Harrison’s opening remarks, he introduced Dan but stressed that, even with the best of intentions, Dan can't fix your Wi-Fi signal. It was a ‘”channel-surfing” presentation focused on broadcast rights to local sports like ours, the Dodgers and Lakers, and where consumers like us will be able to watch live games today and in the future. Dan told us that the MLB generates $2B, the NBA generates $7B and the NFL $10B a year in revenue from television rights. That's some serious “channel” change! 📺💰

The wine was won by Jay Harkenrider in our weekly raffle. and the cash pot is now up to over $400. We went dark this week due to the Labor Day holiday weekend.

If you’re like me, a Monday without Rotary feels like a “TV with no signal—just static and no connection.” I know you “channel” the same excitement, eagerly “tuning in” for the “cam”-araderie, humor, puns, laughter, insight, and, of course, the “egg-cellent’” breakfast each week. Don’t “switch off”—I can’t wait to reconnect with all of you on Monday! 📺🥓
