
Service is Joy

New member Shweta Kapoor led us in the flag salute and gave us the thought for the day, “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy” from Rabindramath Tagore.
President Cedric Tuck-Sherman showed a Rotary event from 1985 where Bob Stephenson was in the Demotion Party event and Bob gave his comments about the festivity. Cedric asked for Happy Dollars. John Osten thanked his caregiver, Randall, Wade Austin celebrated he lost 100 pounds, Walt Kasha talked about his upcoming travels. Nelson Gray, Susan Adams, Bill Bloomfield and Rick Farrell also chipped in.
Photos of current events included the RDF Serenity Room in Compton and the Operation Teddy Bear. Pictures of Rotarians included Mark Shoemaker and Martha Mansfield in Woodstock, Debby Arnold in South Africa, Charlie Steinmetz meeting Tom Jeffrey in Chicago, and Geoff Bremer and Wade Austin at the Rams game.
David Henseler from the Rotary Club of South Bay Sunrise spoke about the Camp Pendleton donation drive this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Hawthorne High School, 4859 El Segundo Blvd. in Hawthorne.
Chis Coye then gave us his craft talk. He joined the Army, went to get a History and Business degree at University of Nevada in Reno. He married his college sweetheart, worked as a Product Manager at Broderbund, then served 21 years at Disney were he was CIO and then in 2018 took over as CIO at our Sketchers headquarters. He has three children and lives in Hermosa Beach, and wants to retire in Maui but his wife wants to stay here.
Nelson Gray talked about the Rotary Foundation and showed a brief video of the various events the organization is involved in. President Cedric talked about the new improvements in our ClubRunner website and then talked about future events coming up – Hosting the Wine Garden this Saturday, the November 1st USS Iowa District event, and VetFest on November 8th.
Donn Ennis was awarded his 50th year in Rotary with a symbolic clock for his house. Bryon Bos was designated the Rotarian of the Month. As of last Monday, we had 116 active members in the club – 23% are women and 92% of our members are over age 50. Now 117 members, with the addition of Madelyne Salo. Jason Wallace is sending out signup sheets for the Dine Around this Wednesday.
Dan Graham won the wine bottle in the raffle, but Jeff Sarota did not win the cash drawing.
