The Spirit World
by John Hugunin

The morning got off to a good start with a friendly welcome from Don Jung.

The early birds were having a great time socializing with one another prior to the start of the meeting.

Vinny Fazzino, Larry Johnson, and Jim Hunter were talking about overcoming handicaps in life, specifically Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who was partially paralyzed by a falling tree when he was 26 years old and has spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Dan Saks, Dick Chase, and Charlie Steinmetz were discussing getting a 3rd Covid vaccine shot.

Steve Delk, Jay Harkenrider, and Donn Ennis were discussing how good the BBQ ribs were at OB's Restaurant.  According to Jay and El Donn, they are the best ribs in MB.  One catch is that you can only get them on Monday.  Jay and El Donn were complaining that the tacos were too big (HA-HA).

Dan Saks called the meeting to order.  Norm Levin was managing the A/V for the meeting. Kudos to Norm for helping with this tough task.

Ken Deemer led us in the flag salute and shared a video titled “Sailing into a Force 10 Storm on Purpose.”  Ken’s larger message was that we need to get outside of the box once in a while.  We will recognize we have skills and capabilities we never realized we had.

President Jordan Holbert introduced her guest, Lisa Coppedge, who is her neighbor and the co-founder of Grades of Green.

MB Rotary Club Charitable Foundation
President Jordan Holbert took a moment to recognize those who served in Afghanistan and their familie' sacrifices.  She also recognized Mark Burton, Debbie Goldberg, Jan Rhees, and Debby Arnold for their work raising over $350 for our MB Rotary Club Charitable Foundation.

Jewish Holidays
We all received an education from “Professor” Ed Kushins on the meanings of the Jewish Holidays: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.  Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion.  Rosh Hashanah, this year, begins on the evening of September 6.

Kobe Bryant Remembered
President Jordan Holbert shared a quote from Kobe Bryant: "What’s most important for a legacy is how that affects the next generation to come.”   She followed up the quote with an entertaining video of Kobe in action on the court.

We watched a video about the Tour de Pier.  It will be on September 12thHilary Mahan encouraged all of us to support this wonderful cause for helping to fight cancer.  We can direct our donations to the “MB Rotary Bike.”   Jim Hunter announced that he and Joanne will match the total donations made to the Rotary Bike.  Thank you, Jim, for your generosity!!!!

Speaker Carlos Soto
Dave Gendron announced our guest speaker, Carlos Soto, CEO and Founder of Nosotros Life and Spirits Co.  Carlos was born and raised in Costa Rica.  The idea for his company came from a college class project in 2015.  By January 2017, he had produced and sold his first bottle of Nosotros Tequila. Sales were slow until Nosotros Tequila was awarded the best tequila prize at the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits competition.

Carlos made an announcement that resulted in a short interruption of his speech. He announced that there were free samples of his tequila available for our members.  There was a mad rush to the table containing the free samples.  This writer has never seen President-Elect Gerry Morton move so fast.  He was the first person to the sample table, breaking the world’s record for the 10-foot sprint.

We learned a lot about starting a small company and how one establishes criteria for success.  We also learned a lot about the tequila industry and how it works.  We also learned that a lot of people are switching from drinking vodka to drinking tequila.
