Whatever You Do for a Living, Bring Art and Creativity into Your Field

by John Hugunin

The morning got off to a good start with a friendly welcome from Scott Yanofsky.

The early birds were having a great time socializing with one another prior to the start of the meeting.

Jay Harkenrider and Mark Burton were comparing how they got their exercise.  Jay likes to ride a bicycle, and Mark prefers walking with his wife.

Dr. Chris and Richard Montgomery were talking about the Hometown Fair.  Richard estimated that the attendance this year was greater than 2019.  Sounds like everyone felt a need to “get out and about.”

Dan Saks was sharing his experience walking the MB Hometown Fair 10K.  He finished in 31st place in the 75-79 age group.  This writer was pretty impressed.  Way to go Dan.  Dan was impressed with the 94-year-old who ran the race and finished.

Rick Farrell and Monica Farrell were busy entertaining grandson/son, Rocco.

Charlie Steinmetz, Dave Peters and Scott Yanofsky were lamenting that there was no breakfast.  Of course, they all agreed that it was probably best for their waistlines.

After believing that Kathleen Terry had held every position in MB Rotary, she has added one more to the list.  It’s one of those jobs without much recognition requiring a significant time of commitment and talent. Hats off to our new AV technician, Kathleen Terry, and her teacher/mentor, Norm Levin.

Dan Saks called the meeting to order and led us in the flag salute.

Dan Jensen share with us how important it was for us to reach out to help other people and cherish friendships with others.

October Birthday, Anniversaries and Activities

Ian Jackson presented our members who were celebrating their wedding anniversaries this month.  Two members tied for time married (51 years): Herb and Nancy Trachtenberg and Norm and Claudia Levin.  The amazing thing was that both couples were married on the same day, October 25th, 51 years ago.

President Jordan Holbert also presented the eight members who were celebrating their birthdays this month.  They were recognized by a “wondrous” Happy Birthday song sung by our talented members.

Dr. Chris shared with all of us the good time everyone had on the SoFi Stadium tour.  Running back Mark Burton earned the prize for the best photograph.

It was heartwarming to see a picture of Larry Wolf with Jim Hunter at the Hometown Fair.

Dave Long announced that we are open for new members.  He encouraged us to sponsor new people interested in community service and “giving back.”

Lawrence Flechner introduced Paula Van Zyl, who spoke to us about the school she is building in Zambia for pre-school through 7th grade young students.  The school is specifically for children orphaned by AIDS. There are now 350 students in the school who would not be receiving an education if not for her efforts.  Lawrence presented her with a check from our club for $2000.  It will help build additional classrooms and toilets for the school.

Guest Speaker – Dr. Robert Klapper, M.D. (Artist, Surfer, Surgeon)

“My Artistic Journey in Orthopedic Surgery”

Dick Chase introduced our guest speaker, Dr. Robert Klapper. Dick listens to Dr. Klapper’s broadcast on ESPN every morning. He is a leader in minimally invasive surgical techniques and holds nine patents on specially designed instruments used in the procedure. Dr. Klapper was the orthopedic consultant to the TV show “ER,” and is the co-host of ESPN radio’s Weekend Warrior. A graduate of Columbia University, Dr. Klapper is also a writer, sculptor, and surfer!

He may be the only art history major at Columbia University who was also on a pre-med path.

We learned in detail how amazing it is to create emotions out of something made from solid rock.  He used Michelangelo’s David and Pieta sculptures to make his point.

Dr. Klapper presented examples of his own works at a sculptor: Mary and Dying Slave.  Dr. Klapper has been sculpting for several years and has his own art studio in Manhattan Beach. He visits Italy once a year to sculpt with Carrara marble, the stone that Michelangelo preferred to use for his sculptures. Dr. Klapper regularly lectures at museums around the world on Michelangelo, his greatest inspiration, and other artists, often exploring the unique relationship between art and medicine.

Being an avid surfer, Dr. Klapper designs his own surfboards. Hopefully, he does not sculpt them from stone. 😊
