Citizen Compliance
-by Jim Hallett

It was Monday, July 20, 2020, and President Tim Hageman unmuted Dan Saks to lead us in the pledge (with a Donn Ennis photo of the flag flying over the Pier) accompanied by thoughts on Kindness…..We mourned the death of Tom Zimmerman’s dad…..President Tim showed us a video of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon on this very date in 1969, including President Nixon calling it a moment of peace and tranquility for all nations…..Rich Montgomery updated us on Manhattan Beach Covid policies, including fines for not wearing masks, closure of most indoor venues, and the need for citizen compliance so that we can reopen sooner.

Club Donations

Russ Samuels outlined procedures for giving the Club happy dollars, donations, and gifts.  You can specify a target activity if you wish.  You can do Paypal by email to MBRotary@gmail.com, or you can go on the website, and you can add 2.5% if you want to cover credit card fees.  (Russ has since sent a detailed email to us all, adding instructions on giving to the Club via Amazon Smile.)…..Dick Chase urged us to join the Book Club discussion in August of Something Wonderful, the story of Rodgers and Hammerstein…..President Tim thanked Sue Vogl for resurrecting the Bulletin and pleaded for volunteers to help write the weekly notes.

Coping With Cancer

Jim Schlager introduced Dr. Afshin Safa, M.D., a UCLA associate professor and Northridge Hospital/Medical Center Cancer Committee Chair and Medical Director of Pump Radiation Oncology.  He focused on the five biggest cancer killers—skin, colon, prostate, breast, and--#1—lung.  He first looked at the emotional issues—shock, fear, anger, grief, guilt.  For medical staff, masks and video make real engagement with patients difficult.   He urged patients to create their own support team.   His Don’ts:  Google; Doctor Shopping; Alternative Medicine; Victim Identification (these Don’ts are OK within limits, but they often distort the way patients process information they need).  He recommended the book Healing Before You’re Cured (moderation is a virtue).  He urged screening—PSA, mammogram, Pap Smear, HPV vaccine, CT Scan, Colonoscopy, Skin Checks, and more.  He also affirmed Chris Ullman’s recommendation of the book The Emperor of All Maladies.  His final words:  Not wearing a mask is spitting in the face of ER medical personnel.

Cancer and Covid

Cancer and Covid:  You can’t come to Rotary if you want to stay in denial about the pain of the world around us.  But you can kick back with a glass of wine, tune into the Book Club, and chat about Oklahoma, South Pacific, The King and I, Carousel, and The Sound of Music.  We Rotarians laugh and cry.
