Reduce Visual Blight - TeaselOur Club is continuing its efforts to eliminate invasive plants in our area. Teasel is the tall (3 to 8 foot) "thistle" with white or purple blooms that shoots up along roadsides and vacant lots. Teasel reproduces without opposition, tending to crowd out desired plants and creating "visual blight". The result of unhindered teasel may be observed along side Route 53 as you exit on the way to Lake-Cook Road. |
Program for July 21We'll be ZOOMin' again on Tuesday with the link previously published. I have invited a number of Kildeer folks, some ex-members and friends. You may also invite folks by forwarding the email with the link that Lyle or Greg sent. This elite group has identified the continuing need to prepare for and immediately respond to the worst day ever. Natural and other disasters are inevitable and frequent, and the need is continuous. Annual donations help ShelterBox stay prepared for upcoming disasters in several ways. It takes time for items to be purchased or manufactured before being packed into the ShelterBoxes and, by pre-packing aid, it is ready to go when needed. Also, annual donations allow ShelterBox to pre-position aid in or near countries where we respond often, resulting in a more efficient and timely response. Gifts via the HERO program will be designated to Deployment Essentials, directly and quickly aiding families in need.

Rotary Club RoyaltyLyle Staab and Jim Dopler recently attended the Rotary Club of Des Plaines Trivia night. They ended up part of the winning team for the night! Who knew. Over 100 Rotarians and community members were on hand to see the "crowning" ceremony.. This was a great event with a buffet dinner, gift baskets to bid on, and or course, great conversation. Lyle and Jim are encouraging RCLG club members to visit other area clubs and their fundraising events this Spring as we investigate some new fundraising ideas. No need to recreate the wheel. Let's learn from the other Clubs in our District. |

Ela 55+ Is Interesting Topic For All Of UsAfter all, we're either already there - in the 55+ cohort - or on the way. Susan Dillon, Director of Adult & Senior Services for Ela Township, enthusiastically exposed us to the programs offered to "Seniors" through the township that most of us live in. Emphasizing the social side of providing activities and support services she described the many programs she oversees, including travel, exercise, meals, counseling, and topical presentations. There's something for everyone, if not now at some time in the future. This is a service that we as Rotarians should be aware of and supporting. Check out more at http://bit.ly/ElaTownshipNews Consider subscribing to their informational, periodic school of events. |

We learned from our own Bourbon Hound..... that there is a lot to learn about Robert Mintz's latest hobby. Robert educated us about the history and what goes into a premier bourbon whiskey including why it's called that and what it's like to use it as perfume. Actually, we now know how to smell the alcohol, the corn, and the rye when presented with a fine bourbon. That was great, Robert. We hope you don't merge that with your other hobbies of skiing, driving, and golf. And next time - more samples. |

What's It Like In A Refugee Camp?Paul Keenon, member of the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn, gave us plenty to think about with his excellent presentation about his many experiences while working to aid refugees and others caught between governments. While sharing statistics, photos, and personal experiences he gave us insights into the difficulties faced by those folks, governments faced with thorny problems of how to deal with this problem, and the activities of NGOs such as the one he has worked with in several settings. Most of Paul's presentation focused on his own experiences at Moira Base, a former military base now the stopping place for the steady flow of humanity trying to reach Europe through from just under five miles away in Turkey. Many have drowned or otherwise been exploited and human trafficking is rife. One had to admire Paul's enthusiasm and his willingness to be at risk himself while pursuing this example of Service Above Self. |
Rotary Honors Fund Raising Efforts Towards End Polio NowOn December 15th, the Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer and Hawthorn Woods awarded founding Club member, Bill Ferreira, and his wife Pam, a special award for their exceptional fundraising efforts towards Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” program. Seven years ago, Pam and Bill Ferreira, came up with the idea to develop an International Cookbook. The project began in 2010 with a District 6440 cook book, followed by the current cook book in 2013. They solicited recipes from Rotary Clubs around the world. Over 5,000 recipes were submitted for consideration. The resulting cookbook, “Rotarian Flavors of the World”, features over 400 recipes from Rotary districts in over 150 countries. To date, Mr. Ferreira has sold approximately 7,500 cook books, and raised nearly $40,000 for Rotary’s “End Polio Now” program. The project continues to be a worldwide fundraising project for polio eradication. For every cookbook sold at $15.00 (includes Shipping + handling in the US only), $5.00 goes to polio eradication. You may still order the cookbook by calling: 847-302-6310 or via email: rotarianflavorsworldcookbook@gmail.com |

Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Mariano'sThe Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer and Hawthorn Woods has Holiday spirit, even if it was sunny and 50 degrees out on Saturday. Jim Dopler, Ryan Biirch and Adam Keppel braved the elements to ring the bells for donations on behalf of the Salvation Army. We covered the East door at Mariano's for six hours. The change jingled as it was dropped n the kettle. Dollar bills were folded several times over in order to fit through the narrow opening in the kettle. This was our first year getting involved in fundraising for the Salvation Army. We certainly hope it won't be our last. The store customers were very generous. Some made donations on the way in to the store, others on the way out. Some customers even had their children deposit the donations. What a great way to teach children the meaning of charity, and how to help their neighbors. |
St. Mathews Annual Thanksgiving MealThis morning I purchased and delivered 200 pounds of frozen Butterball turkeys to our friends at St. Mathews Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods. Thanks to our local Aldi, in Lake Zurich, for allowing us to purchase all these turkeys in a single shopping trip, and at a great price. Last year, the leftovers from this event were shared with a partner church in Chicago, and helped feed another 200 local residents. |

Today I Met Someone Impacted by PolioPolio has been eradicated in the United States for so long, that I never thought I would actually meet someone impacted by the disease. That was true until today. I met someone who's father was diagnosed with polio at the age of three. He passed away recently, but because of the support from groups like Rotary and the March of Dimes, he was able to live a long, full life, into his eighties. The family was from a farm in nearby Wisconsin, Our "End Polio Now" dinners, and other Polio fundraising efforts may just keep another family from having to experience this disease on a first hand basis. |

Lake County Haven - Thank You !We recently received the following "Thank You" note from the Lake County Haven Women's and Children's Shelter in Libertyville.
"Thank you for adopting December 1st at our shelter. Today we worked with our residents on self-esteem. Each women explored her personal strengths and ways she does good in the world. This is such an important exercise for our residents who struggle to see their positive qualities. Thank you for making this possible." |
Rotary Scholar remembers the kindness of Jim RunnfeldtWe just received the following letter from a former Rotary Scholar. Jean-Noel is now the Chief Financial Officer for Aqua-Lung International Inc. Clearly, Rotary and the kindness of our departed friend Jim Runnfeldt made a difference in his life. We've passed this on to Jim's children, Kelly and Jay.
My mail will probably surprise you, but I felt you and the Rotary club you are managing deserves it and probably for a long time …
I have been honored to be a Rotary Scholar in 1988-89, when I finished my studies at Northwestern doing a Master of science in Geotechnics. I was appointed Jim R. as a main contact for the year I spent in Evanston. Even probably your club or the district sponsored me, I do not remember precisely how it worked at that time.
In this context I had the extreme pleasure to meet Jim and his family, enjoyed visiting Rotary clubs around together with Jim. We travelled together north of Chicago in his family home in the lovely countryside, I met his family many times, his mother and enjoyed meeting with all when I visited Jim a few years after I graduated.
A quarter of a century later I have been offered a position to work in San Diego. When I came back on US territory I tried in March 2016 to establish contact with Jim. I left messages on his phone which by chance did not change for years … But no response until I looked deeper on internet and found that he passed away the same month! I felt a little bit orphan that day! Jim has been such of a great support, always enthusiastic about helping the others and establishing new contacts.
I just wanted to share this thoughts with you. I would also be very happy if you could help me to get in contact with his son or daughter. If I have the chance to go back in northern Illinois I will let know and if possible be happy you to join one of your weekly meeting.
I wish you, all Rotary members and the Jim’s Family and excellent 2017 year.

Charter member Bill Schwartz, back from Australia and now living in Arizona, and 1998 inductee Prem Advani, who lives in Florida, were in town and joined us for breakfast. Each gave us a few words on what they've been up to. They were able to hear a great presentation by Ciri Stom on the efforts by her family to make a difference in memory of her sons who died of drug overdoses, We wish luck to the Jeremy Stom Remembrance Foundation.

A New Member Bio and a Rotary Race for Charity UpdateThis week, new member Greg Cardelli spent some time going over his biography for us. It included his background in Accounting, his family in Hawthorn Woods, and a unique assortment of family pets. Thanks Greg, for sharing your life story. Our second presenter of the day was Lyle Staab, with an update on the Rotary Race for Charity, New marketing materials have been created for this year, as well as a redesigned front end website. Most tasks are well underway. We have nine charities on board so far for this year, and are hoping for one or two more. We are still soliciting sponsors for the event, so please keep Robert Mintz informed of your efforts in this area.

Getting excited about the 19th Rotary Race for Charity! |
New Website for Rotary Race for CharityI'm not sure where to begin to say "Thank You" to Lyle Staab for completely redesigning the front end to our Race website. Everything flows beautifully. The new HOME page is attention grabbing with photos that really capture the feel of the event. You can now directly link to our sponsor and charity websites as well. We also need to thank Aaron Underwood for continuing to maintain the back end custom Registration system. I know lots of hours go into keeping our Race application vibrant and ready for another year. Check it out at rotaryrace.org.
Great Job guys!

Rotary Club Serves up Community Dinner at Emmaus HouseThanks to everyone who came out to help prepare and serve dinner on Sunday evening at Emmaus House in Lake Zurich. Participating Club members included: Jim Dopler, (Marilyn Dopler), Lyle Staab, Jon Jansky, Ed CruickshanK, (Stephanie Cruickshank) and Bill Ferreira. The meal consisted of Fried chicken, peas, corn, potato salad, pasta salad, garden salad, veggie tray, coffee, and lemonade. We had over 170 guests attending, which one of the highest headcounts of the year. Emmaus House does a tremendous job of servicing those in need of food in Lake County. They host this Sunday evening meal every week, along with a food pantry of donations from local food stores including Jewel, Marianno's, PeaPod, etc. A core group of church volunteers has been running the program for more than ten years. Emmaus House is a ministry of St. Francis de Sales Catholic church. This is the third time our Rotary Club has sponsored the meal. The Rotary Club of Lake Zurich also sponsors the meal several times per year.

New Little Free Library donated to Hawthorn WoodsOur Rotary Club completed its most recent project this past week with the installation of a new Little Free Library (LFL) at the Community Park in Hawthorn Woods. The park is located at the northwest corner of Quentin and Old McHenry Roads. The LFL, which is located between the pavilion and the children's playground, is in the shape of a rustic red barn, selected to match the style of the nearby Village Hall and Administrative Center. The LFL was stocked with books generously donated by Club members over the past several weeks. The Project was initiated by Club Secretary and President-Elect Jim Dopler with additional design and construction assistance from Don Biciste. Installation work was completed by the Village of Hawthorn Woods. Club members will all have a chance to view the new LFL later this summer when the Club sponsors one of the Concerts in the Park on August 5th.This is the second LFL donated by the Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer, and Hawthorn Woods. The first was installed last year at the Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich.

Fifth Tuesday Social EventThanks to the Rotary Club members and guests that attended our recent Fifth Tuesday Social Event last Tuesday evening at Broken Earth Winery in Long Grove. We had appetizers and pizza catered by Village Pizza and BBQ in Long Grove. The comfy leather furniture led to three main conversation groups for the evening, with members free to come and go between them to catch up on all the latest area news. It's nice to have these quarterly social get togethers and have more time to get to know each other on a more personal basis.

Imerman AngelsOn May 24th, Nimesh Jhaveri, a member of the Board of Directors of Imerman Angels, was our speaker. Imerman Angels partners anyone seeking cancer support with someone just like them – a “Mentor Angel”. A Mentor Angel is a cancer survivor or caregiver who is the same age, same gender, and most importantly who has faced the same type of cancer. Nimesh is also the executive director of pharmacy and healthcare experience of Walgreens. It was a great presentation, and several in the audience spoke to Nimesh after the meeting about getting involved with Imerman Angels. Thanks, Nimesh! Nimesh also mentioned that Walgreen's adopted Rotary's Four Way Test in 1955, and that he has a copy displayed on his desk. See http://www.walgreens.com/topic/sr/four_way_test.jsp. |
Fascinating Story of Little Known Cancer IndicatorDr. Neil Perlman, Past President of the Lincolnshire RC, gave an interesting, personal presentation about Lynch Syndrome, a genetic disorder which is carried in his family and often without knowledge along the family tree of many others. He presented many facts and advice to the rest of us about this syndrome.
Neil and his sister, also an M.D., have founded CCARE, the Colon Cancer Alliance for Research and Education for Lynch Syndrome, See http://www.fightlynch.org

Memorial Service for Jim RunnfeldtOn Friday, April 29th, several Club members attended the Memorial Service for Founding Club Member, Jim Runnfeldt. Those attending included Jim Dopler, Lyle Staab, Ryan Birch, George Dorner, Bill Ferreira, Sara Knight, Aaron Underwood (and Angie), and Lucy Adduci. Former Club member Wally Fricker and his wife even came down to join us from Galena, IL. Numerous other Rotary members from around the Chicago area were also on hand. The service was held in the Chapel at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, where Jim was a long time member and a volunteer. There were over 100 friends and family in attendance. Three of those attending were invited to speak as part of the program. Jim's son was the first speaker to give everyone some insight into the family man. Bill Ferreira was next up, to provide some perspective on Jim's involvement in Rotary for much of his life. And finally, a member of Willow Creek Hospitality ministry was asked to speak, representing one of the many volunteer teams that Jim served on at the church. At this morning's breakfast meeting, Bill Ferreira added that perhaps the best way we can all honor Jim is to keep the Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer, and Hawthorn Woods a vibrant, service oriented Club in the communities we serve. Jim certainly gave us all a good example to follow.

James H. Runnfeldt, RIPJim Runnfeldt, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer, and Hawthorn Woods, lifelong Rotarian, friend to many, and loving father, passed away on April 13th. His daughter Kelly asked us to share the following message with his Rotary family:Hello Everyone,
Jay and I wanted to let you all know that Dad passed away peacefully last night. As many of you know, his cancer had become incredibly aggressive and he was admitted to the ICU at the University of Chicago two weeks ago. He was moved to the Marshak Family Hospice Care Center in Glenview this past weekend where the family was able to spend quality time with him before he passed.
We feel very fortunate for the care that he received, especially with hospice, as the people that surrounded us his last few days allowed us all to feel at peace.
The visitation and memorial will take place on Friday, April 29th in the Chapel at Willow Creek Community Church located at 67 E. Algonquin Road, South Barrington, IL 60010.
Visitation: 9:00AM - 10:45AM
Memorial Service: 11:00AM
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rotary International, see attachment, or Willow Creek Community Church 67 E. Algonquin Road, South Barrington, IL 60010 with James H. Runnfeldt noted in the memo.
Please feel free to forward on this email.
We thank you for your thoughts and prayers at this time,

Little Free Library at Foglia YMCAThe Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer, Hawthorn Woods has installed a new Little Free Library at the Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich. Jim Dopler and Don Biciste braved the heat wave in the mid-80s to install the library this week. The cedar library was ordered on line. However, there was still lots of fun to be had staining it, building and staining the post and actually installing it. Don put his keen construction and hardware background to good use on this project, by designing in extra support. I think this library could withstand a tornado. The library shelf has been filled with books donated by Club members, along with a few children's book purchased from the local Goodwill store. This is a great gift to the community we serve, and should be enjoyed for years to come. Jim Dopler will be following up this project with a related request for funding for some flowers and a bench to accompany the library. |

Nice article in The Herald on our Dental Mission |
International Dental Mission in NicaraguaLast week, Club member, Robert Mintz, Long Grove, was the speaker at the regular weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer and Hawthorn Woods. He provided an excellent presentation on a Dental Mission to Nicaragua, recently co-sponsored by the Club. The meeting was held on Tuesday morning, at Smokin T’s restaurant, Long Grove. Late last year, Club member, Dr. Ed Vallely and his son, Sean, were given the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua to help the underprivileged with their dental needs. They served the Orphan Network of Casa Bernabe in Veracruz, which is a suburb of Managua. This mission was a combined effort between the Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer and Hawthorn Woods and the Rotary Club of Denver. They set up a temporary clinic on the premises and treated 400-500 people in need of dental care over the course of four days. A team of six doctors, two hygienists and five supporting team members from the United States participated. In addition, the Local Rotary provided more volunteers to make this a true international mission. To learn more about the ORPHANetwork of Casa Bernabe, view photos, or read recent blog posts, please visit their website. It was quite an adventure for all involved. Fourteen crates of equipment and disposables came along for the journey. The group endured 90 degree heat, humidity, and even some torrential rains. In addition to serving the children of the Orphanage, the group also provided services to two busloads of other local children per day, which were organized by local churches. Robert Mintz, one of the supporting team members, had the opportunity to get interviewed about the project by the local television station (in Spanish). In order to keep the children’s interest, the group brought along Beanie Babies, donated by the Rotary International staff in Chicago. Several members of the team also provided face painting to keep the children entertained while awaiting their turn with the Dentists. This was the 21st Dental Mission the group has been involved in over the years. This is an ongoing sustainable project that is part of the international service that is provided by Rotary clubs in 34,000 communities in 200 countries and territories. |
A Thank You Note from the Lake County Haven, LibertyvilleLaura Sabino, Executive Director, The Lake County Haven, Libertyville, recently sent us a "Thank You" card as follows. Thank you for your donation of $250.00 for our Adopt-a-Night program. By sponsoring a night at the Haven's shelter, you provided safety, sanctuary, and the opportunity for a new start for homeless women and children. Because of you there was a safe shelter, a warm bed, and a nutritious meal. There was counseling, career help, and emotional support. There was a caring community for women and children who have endured extensive trauma. Your gift has changed people's lives, forever. On behalf of the people you reached out and helped: thank you ! A hand written note was also included as follows. Thank you so much for adopting December 20th at our shelter in honor of your 20th anniversary. Our shelter was full with eleven women and children working hard to become independent. One special moment for our home that evening was being able to hear one of our young moms sing a lullaby to her child as she rocked her to sleep. This was possible because of your generosity. Thank you. Lake County Haven.
