2022 Rotary Community Parade on Canada Day fun in the sun for everyoneMLA Caroline Wawzonek is all decked out for the day as she prepares to bike the parade route. Premier Caroline Cochrane can be seen in the background, and MLA Kevin O'Reilly is on the left.. Photo by James O'Connor The response to the return of a summer community parade last Friday was a clear hit on a sunny summer day. Many Rotarians, parade entrants and people lining the sidewalks of 48th Street and all the way along Franklin Avenue for the 2022 Rotary Community Parade on Canada Day wore orange shirts in the spirit of healing and reconciliation. As MLA Caroline Wawzonek told True North FM about what Canada Day means to her: “It’s a day to celebrate some of the shared values that we all have, and I was thinking about it this morning, what a great country where we can disagree strongly, but then come together on a day like this and celebrate the fact that we actually are still in it together. It’s a wonderful feeling.” Popsicles enjoyed by parade fans on 48 Street. Photo by James O'Connor Thousands of people lined Yellowknife's main city street to see everything from a traditional pipe band, to brightly dressed cultural groups, radio controlled cars, decorated vehicles from the business community and the airport's impressive new Oshkosh Striker 6×6 ARFF fire truck. |
More than 50 entries expected in Community Parade on Canada DayThe response to the return of a summer community parade has been exceptionally strong, with some 40 entries already registered and perhaps a dozen more expected to join the parade, which starts at 11am downtown on Canada Day. The Canada Day Mile, organized by the Yellowknife Running Group, will lead off the parade. Another first is having the parade start from in front of City Hall on 49 Avenue/Veterans Drive, proceed down 48 Street and then head southwest along Franklin Avenue to the Community Arena parking lot, where it will disband. |

Call for parade entries continuesAnyone interested in being part of the Rotary Community Parade on Canada Day should contact the Club at: rotary.yellowknife@gmail.com to indicate your interest or just for more information. To answer a couple of frequent questions: There is no entry fee; we go ahead rain or shine; and you can pretty much do what you want, just keep it safe and family friendly. The Club already has heard from more than half of the traditional number of entrants less than one month out, so it promises to be a great event. To give you some idea of how grassroots and fun the parade has been, longtime Rotarian Brian George provided some images from 2006 and 2012.

Boxes for Music (and Music for Boxes)I was selected to participate in an International Rotary Youth Exchange for 2017/2018, and will be moving to the Czech Republic in August of this year. I’ll be living with Rotary host families for a year, attending school and learning to speak Czech! As a participant in the exchange, I am encouraged to develop a service project, embracing the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self. Since I love music and am presently preparing for my Grade 10 piano exam, I have chosen to blend my Rotary service project with my love for music, and have planned the fundraiser “Boxes for Music.” This afternoon concert will be an hour or so of musical entertainment, from myself and several other YK student musicians. Admission is by donation, and all funds raised will be donated to “Shelterbox Canada,” a Rotary supported organization providing emergency shelter and vital supplies to communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. I am very excited to be able to contribute to this organization; they do amazing work. If you are able to attend, I would be honored. It’s Sunday, May 7th at 3 pm at the Anglican Church. Rotary Minute - The Inner WheelBefore 1989, Rotary generally prohibited women as members. Therefore another organisation was established for the wives and daughters of Rotarians, known as Inner Wheel. Despite women now being able to join Rotary, Inner Wheel Clubs continue in many countries. Inner Wheel is an international organisation closely linked to Rotary that was founded in 1924 by Margarette Golding, a nurse, business woman and the wife of a Manchester Rotarian, to unite wives and daughters of Rotarians. Prior to 1924, wives of Rotarians in many cities and towns, prompted by a concern for public welfare, had been voluntarily, in the background, giving their time and energies to help in any service being undertaken by their menfolk. On the 15th November 1923, twenty-seven Rotary wives, led by Mrs. Golding, met in a Cooling Room (because it was free of charge) at Herriot's Turkish Baths, St Mary's Street, Deansgate, Manchester. They discussed the possibility of forming an independent ladies' group run on Rotary lines. The objects of the Club, they explained, would be twofold, to foster friendship and to offer much more in the way of service. The International Inner Wheel objectives are (a) promoting true friendship, (b) encouraging the ideals of personal service, and (c) fostering international understanding. The International Inner Wheel is one of the largest women's voluntary organisations in the world. It is active in over 103 countries with 100,000 members in 3895 clubs. Any woman who shares the three central aims of International Inner Wheel can join the organisation. Members achieve these aims through Club events, which combine personal service, fund-raising, fellowship and fun, united by friendship and a common aim to serve the local community. Members give practical support as well as financial help whenever there is a crisis, whether this occurs locally, nationally or internationally, for natural disasters or for people suffering in war-torn regions. |

Happy Holidays!
Yellowknife Rotarians kicked into holiday gear with the St. Pat's choir ... and a visit from the jolly man himself. (In previous years we've bribed someone to dress up as Santa -- this year we went with the real one!). Have a safe and happy holiday season. We are meeting for lunch as usual on 30 December. No speaker -- just fellowship.
