2022 Rotary Community Parade on Canada Day fun in the sun for everyone

The response to the return of a summer community parade last Friday was a clear hit on a sunny summer day.
Many Rotarians, parade entrants and people lining the sidewalks of 48th Street and all the way along Franklin Avenue for the 2022 Rotary Community Parade on Canada Day wore orange shirts in the spirit of healing and reconciliation.
As MLA Caroline Wawzonek told True North FM about what Canada Day means to her: “It’s a day to celebrate some of the shared values that we all have, and I was thinking about it this morning, what a great country where we can disagree strongly, but then come together on a day like this and celebrate the fact that we actually are still in it together. It’s a wonderful feeling.”

Thousands of people lined Yellowknife's main city street to see everything from a traditional pipe band, to brightly dressed cultural groups, radio controlled cars, decorated vehicles from the business community and the airport's impressive new Oshkosh Striker 6×6 ARFF fire truck.

More than 50 entries expected in Community Parade on Canada Day

The response to the return of a summer community parade has been exceptionally strong, with some 40 entries already registered and perhaps a dozen more expected to join the parade, which starts at 11am downtown on Canada Day.

The Rotary Community Parade on Canada Day will have a new starting point and be preceded for the first time by a foot race featuring local runners. The Canada Day Mile, organized by the Yellowknife Running Group, will lead off the parade. Another first is having the parade start from in front of City Hall on 49 Avenue/Veterans Drive, proceed down 48 Street and then head southwest along Franklin Avenue to the Community Arena parking lot, where it will disband.

Call for parade entries continues

Anyone interested in being part of the Rotary Community Parade on Canada Day should contact the Club at: rotary.yellowknife@gmail.com to indicate your interest or just for more information.

To answer a couple of frequent questions: There is no entry fee; we go ahead rain or shine; and you can pretty much do what you want, just keep it safe and family friendly. The Club already has heard from more than half of the traditional number of entrants less than one month out, so it promises to be a great event.

To give you some idea of how grassroots and fun the parade has been, longtime Rotarian Brian George provided some images from 2006 and 2012.

Rotary Speaker Series, Kim Knutson

Kim Knutson, during her April 19 presentation to the YK Club.

In the latest humble video offering from our Speaker Series, Kim Knutson was warmly welcomed to a recent lunch meeting of the YK Club — both to hear what she had to say about the notoriously challenging real estate market in the city and because of her connection to long-time Rotarian Craig Hockridge, her husband who passed away in 2020.

Kim became a licensed Realtor in 2015 and in 2020, opened her new business: Re/Max North of 60 Realty. She has lived in Yellowknife since 1997 and has “raised two outstanding humans,” she says. "I am passionate about Yellowknife and love to share its treasures.”

It is named for Rotary’s founder, a Chicago lawyer, who started our organization with three business associates in 1905. Individuals who have shown by exemplary effort, sacrifice or dedication to the causes and principles of Rotary deserve the recognition of the Paul Harris Fellowship are eligible to be nominated, whether they are members of Rotary or not.
Paul Harris said:

Wet weather and high water provided challenges for completing seasonal maintenance in Rotary Park and on the boardwalk.

When the weather was nice this summer — and we had some glorious days — the club met outside and under the pavilions in the park to comply with public health COVID-19 regulations. But it seemed whenever some work was to be done, the rains came.

Sudden passing of Craig Hockridge

FELLOW ROTARIANS,

We were all deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Craig Hockridge. Craig devoted many hours to Rotary projects including the building of the gazebos in Rotary Park.
Attached are two photos showing Craig in action in helping to construct the iconic structures that are the centrepiece of the park. The pictures were taken in 2002 and the official opening picture was in 2003.
Craig's dedication, good humour and willingness to always step up will be greatly missed.

Yours in Rotary,
Chuck Tolley

A short while ago we did Christmas wreaths again.  It's a major fundraiser for our service projects - none of the money goes to club administration. supplies, travel, lunches, etc.
And great thanks are overdue to the Joint Task Force North members who helped out A LOT:

Kids Ahead 2017

The Rotary Club of Yellowknife would like to thank the Union of Northern Workers for their continued support of the Kids Ahead program, which delivers healthy snacks to elementary school children in Yellowknife.  The Union of Northern Workers has been proud to support Rotary in bringing the Kids Ahead program to local schools for the past 13 years.

Since funding has been confirmed for the project, we'll need a chair and volunteers to coordinate the delivery of snacks to the schools.  If you're interested in helping out with this community project, please get in touch with Chris Potyok and he'll be able to get you started.

International Projects - Mozambique and Beyond!

Thanks to Peter Vician for his talk and continued support to the School Project in Mozambique yesterday in partnership with the Gateway club in Edmonton.

I want to remind everyone that in the coming weeks we expect to have presentations forthcoming from Chris Potyok regarding clean water and sanitation systems for children in the Philippines, and from Nazim Awan regarding a clean water pump system in a community in Pakistan.

If anyone has other suggestions for International projects that our club would be interested in being involved in, now is the time to let us know. Speak to any member of the executive and we'll set you up with the process to qualify your project and present it to us.

Busy July!

We had a busy July!
Most recently we worked with the Salvation Army to pack Food Hampers.  This year we've been told that there's been a lot more demand for the hampers than previous years.  Hopefully our help made an impact.
Thanks to Jason Snaggs and his family, Kam Hogan, Jeff Fowler, Robert Crouch and his family, Bradley Elkin-Hall, Austin Marshall and Mike Olsen and his family!

We kicked off the month with a hugely successful Canada Day parade, many thanks to Karen Wilford and all of the other volunteers that made the day a success!
A couple of weeks ago we announced the Winner of the Don Cardinal Art Scholarship, Emily-Ann Andrews!  She will be attending Memorial University to work on her Bachelor of Fine Arts in the fall. Congratulations!

Here are a few of her works, posted with her permission.

Boxes for Music (and Music for Boxes)

I was selected to participate in an International Rotary Youth Exchange for 2017/2018, and will be moving to the Czech Republic in August of this year. I’ll be living with Rotary host families for a year, attending school and learning to speak Czech! As a participant in the exchange, I am encouraged to develop a service project, embracing the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.

Since I love music and am presently preparing for my Grade 10 piano exam, I have chosen to blend my Rotary service project with my love for music, and have planned the fundraiser “Boxes for Music.” This afternoon concert will be an hour or so of musical entertainment, from myself and several other YK student musicians. Admission is by donation, and all funds raised will be donated to “Shelterbox Canada,” a Rotary supported organization providing emergency shelter and vital supplies to communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. I am very excited to be able to contribute to this organization; they do amazing work.

If you are able to attend, I would be honored. It’s Sunday, May 7th at 3 pm at the Anglican Church.

Rotary Minute - The Inner Wheel

Before 1989, Rotary generally prohibited women as members.  Therefore another organisation was established for the wives and daughters of Rotarians, known as Inner Wheel. Despite women now being able to join Rotary, Inner Wheel Clubs continue in many countries.

Inner Wheel is an international organisation closely linked to Rotary that was founded in 1924 by Margarette Golding, a nurse, business woman and the wife of a Manchester Rotarian, to unite wives and daughters of Rotarians.  Prior to 1924, wives of Rotarians in many cities and towns, prompted by a concern for public welfare, had been voluntarily, in the background, giving their time and energies to help in any service being undertaken by their menfolk.  On the 15th November 1923, twenty-seven Rotary wives, led by Mrs. Golding, met in a Cooling Room (because it was free of charge) at Herriot's Turkish Baths, St Mary's Street, Deansgate, Manchester.  They discussed the possibility of forming an independent ladies' group run on Rotary lines.  The objects of the Club, they explained, would be twofold, to foster friendship and to offer much more in the way of service.

The International Inner Wheel objectives are (a) promoting true friendship, (b) encouraging the ideals of personal service, and (c) fostering international understanding.  The International Inner Wheel is one of the largest women's voluntary organisations in the world.  It is active in over 103 countries with 100,000 members in 3895 clubs.

Any woman who shares the three central aims of International Inner Wheel can join the organisation.  Members achieve these aims through Club events, which combine personal service, fund-raising, fellowship and fun, united by friendship and a common aim to serve the local community.  Members give practical support as well as financial help whenever there is a crisis, whether this occurs locally, nationally or internationally, for natural disasters or for people suffering in war-torn regions.

ROTARY CLUB OF YELLOWKNIFE
Weekly Newsletter – December 17

Greeting All Members!  Here’s what we have going on:
  • This week’s luncheon is our Christmas Party - December 19 – Noon – Explorer Hotel (Kat B&C)
  • December 26 – Boxing Day – Meeting cancelled
  • Now - Philippines - Members have been enquiring about helping out with donations to the devastated areas of the Philippines.
    • Our club and the District respectfully suggest that any donation be directed to ShelterBox Canada or The Canadian Red Cross. Both are reputable charities with reach to the Philippines and the Canadian Government is matching these donations in a flow through basis. You will receive a tax deductible receipt from either organization.
    • Unfortunately The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is not setting up a Disaster Fund for this effort, so we are on our own as far as donations are concerned.
    • Our District will be sending $10,000 to the afflicted Rotary District in the Philippines later in December. This will help local Rotarians in the Philippines with rebuilding grants and will allow them to leverage our money through TRF when applying for grants.
    • ShelterBox Canada  http://www.shelterboxcanada.org

In November, President of the Union of Northern Workers presented our Rotary Club (President Darin Benoit) with a cheque for $15,000 for the Kids Ahead Snack Program.

Kids can't learn on an empty belly. Healthy Snacks sends nutritous food to Mildred Hall and Weledeh Elementary Schools. Without the UNW this program would likely not exist.

Traditionally held the fourth Saturday of the month -- the host selects the date (it can be a different day of the week), decides how many guests, provides the location and liquid libations. Guests bring all the food. RSVP if you can host:

On January 13, Rotary International welcomed its newest member. YCS Superintendent Claudia Parker -- sponsored by Kim Poulter -- joins us in the classification of Education. Claudia has lived in the North since 1981. This year she celebrated 25 years working with Yellowknife Catholic Schools. It's her second year in the role of Superintendent. Claudia has three lovely children born and raised in Yellowknife. They have all returned from their post-secondary education to work in Yellowknife.

If you'd like to join Rotary, talk to any member of our club!

Yellowknife Rotarians kicked into holiday gear with the St. Pat's choir ... and a visit from the jolly man himself. (In previous years we've bribed someone to dress up as Santa -- this year we went with the real one!). Have a safe and happy holiday season. We are meeting for lunch as usual on 30 December. No speaker -- just fellowship.
