A donation from the Rotary Club of Yellowknife has helped kickstart a new round of fundraising for school projects in Mozambique, spearheaded by Edmonton Gateway Rotary Club.

Specifically, the recent $4,300 donation helped build a badly need washroom block at Macambucuine School in Xai-Xai, Mozambique.

“Thanks to the Rotary Club of Yellowknife, we have kickstarted a new round of fundraising for Steven’s Hope,” said Elizabeth Bonkink, president of Gateway Rotary, explaining Steven’s Hope is the charitable name for the school projects in Mozambique.

“Shortly a GoFundMe campaign will begin, as well as a collection of personal donations from our own club members.

“It is our hope that we can double these funds with a district grant and some meaningful progress can resume. Your contribution to the project has brought renewed vigor to our club.”

The Mozambique projects have been spearheaded by Dr. Lorne Parker, International Director with the Edmonton club.

Dr. Parker works with local Mozambique contractors who have an apprentice approach. Thanks to this model, two new construction companies were created. And all resources were sourced locally to help stimulate the economy.

Dr. Parker travels to Mozambique once a year and ensures receipts are kept for everything.

President Bonkink also noted members of Edmonton Gateway are particularly appreciative of Yellowknife Rotary Club member Peter Vician’s support for the students of Mozambique, which goes beyond the provision of funding.

‘His hands-on participation on two work team visits to the Macambucuine school site shows his incredible dedication,” she said. “Additionally, he developed a maintenance plan for that school and is now supporting our International Director with the planning for our new project in Muchisso. His contributions are invaluable.”
