Mangrove Trees: The Unsung Heroes
Mangrove Restoration & Education Project — Pasir Ris RCMC members and Interactors from Dunman Secondary truly embodied the Rotary motto of People of Action. With sleeves rolled up and boots on, members came together to plant young mangrove trees at Pasir Ris Park as part of the Mangrove Restoration and Education Project. President Edward shared his excitement in leading the club’s second mangrove tree planting at the park. The event was graced by Guest of Honour Senior Minister of State Desmond Tan, Special Guest AG Jimmy Cheong, and members of the Rotary Club of Dusit led by President Thammasak. |

A Night of Gold, Black, Blue, and Global Fellowship On 25 July 2025, the Rotary Club of Marina City held its Installation Dinner at the elegant Goodwood Park Hotel, where the theme of gold, black, and blue set a vibrant tone for the evening. Approximately 170 Rotarians and guests gathered to celebrate the installation of Edward Quek as the new Club President, along with his incoming board.The evening was filled with joy and camaraderie, as members reconnected with old friends and welcomed new ones from 12 Rotary clubs across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. |

RCMC and Miss Singapore
MISS SINGAPORE PAGEANT 1994One of the most memorable and impactful projects undertaken by the Rotary Club of Marina City took place in 1994, during the presidency of Mr. Sunny Bay, our 9th President and a Charter Member of the Club. Under his dynamic leadership, the Club successfully organized the Miss Singapore Pageant 1994 in conjunction with Alex Liu, National Director Miss Singapore Pageant, culminating in a grand gala dinner held on 14 January 1994 at the Orchard Hotel Ballroom. From a group of 20 finalists, a distinguished panel of judges—including President Sunny Bay—selected the winner. President Sunny Bay shared about the event, “We understand that the participants are not just beautiful bodies; they are each a personality with hopes, dreams and ambitions; all of us striving to be better ourselves in various ways … The aspirations of these beautiful participants have indirectly created this benefit for the Handicaps Welfare Association, enable all of us to support the Association in its endeavor to foster the ideas of self-help and mutual assistance among disabled. We must therefore honor our participants and appreciate their decision to participate.” |

A Partnership that Matters
 A Partnership that MattersThe Rotary Club of Marina City (RCMC) has proudly partnered with RC Dusit for more than 35 years in supporting this meaningful scholarship program. Through this collaboration, countless students have received not just financial aid, but encouragement and opportunity. On 14 July 2025, RC Dusit held its Installation and Annual Student Scholarship Ceremony in Bangkok. During the event, President Edward Quek presented a cheque for SGD 2,880 on behalf of RCMC to President Thammasak of RC Dusit in support of the scholarship bursaries.

 Big News from Rotary Bali DisCon 2025!President-Elect Edward proudly attended the Rotary District Conference 2025 in Bali, representing the Rotary Club of Marina City (RCMC) and accepting a prestigious district award on behalf of the club. Santarina visited RCMC at Amber Park RCMC Hosts its Annual Christmas PartyThe Rotary Club of Marina City (RCMC) celebrated its annual Christmas party as part of the District 3310 Fellowship on 20th December 2024 at the Amber Park function room. The event was attended by club members, their spouses, and friends, all coming together for a festive and joyous occasion. The evening was hosted by Past President Lee Lye Wah and President Elect Edward Quek, who welcomed everyone to the celebration. The venue was beautifully decorated with festive arrangements by Yochi, Lye Wah, and Edward creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. |

Here's an example. On Sunday, 20 August, 2023, I had the pleasure of participating in a beach cleanup organized by Rotary Club of Marina City. Layers upon layers of happiness warmed my heart during that outing. |

Amazing facts big and small! Germans in SingaporeThat’s the story of two hundred years of German influence in Singapore, as told by RCMC member Sabine Hein at the 10 July meeting. And as chronicled in her beautiful book same topic recently published. We now know Thomson Road got its name from one of many Germans who helped build Singapore. Club member, Kelvin enjoyed the presentation and said “thanks Sabine for the wonderful story telling today. Your legacy is imprinted in our club for many years.” |

Raising awareness on the Afghanistan crisisRCMC recently hosted a talk by Ms Lynette Lim of Hagar Singapore. Hagar Singapore is a registered charity in Singapore and part of an international organisation with 27 years of experience in fighting against human trafficking, slavery and abuse. Committed to the recovery and economic empowerment of marginalised women and children, HAGAR provides recovery services and empowerment to survivors to help them start a new life and reduce their risk of re-exploitation. In the process, HAGAR works closely with MOM and MHA; co-chairs of the Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons in Singapore to provide recovery care for victims of human trafficking. Since 2014, HAGAR has provided training to more than 4,000 Singapore frontline policemen on topics related to human trafficking and victim identification. Its key values are respect, integrity, compassion and excellence. HAGAR has an international presence. In Afghanistan in particular, HAGAR has been working there for more than a decade (since 2008), and is providing emergency relief to displaced families affected by the current humanitarian crisis. Based on their rapid needs assessments, an estimated SGD700,000 is needed to help provide food, healthcare and critical assistance over the next 3 months; 100% of proceeds will go directly towards implementing the relief activities. The talk was very well attended; members were highly engaged and showed great concern for this area of work, and Ms Lynette shared insights that were both heartbreaking and heartening. Human trafficking, slavery and abuse creates trauma that is simply incomprehensible, and the urgency of tackling these issues cannot be overstated. Through the talk, RCMC hoped to raise awareness of human trafficking, slavery and abuse, and provide Rotarians with a fresh opportunity to exemplify the core Rotarian values of service and leadership in this important fight. |

Bishan HomeColours & Cheers: Mural Painting at Bishan Home Last Sunday, 24 February, we continued our long-term cooperation with the Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled by bringing a touch of colour to the common area of the home. Members of Rotary Club of Marina City and youths from the Rotaract Club of Marina City and the Interact Club of Dunman Secondary School came together for the project. The outcome of the hard work and creative expression was warmly received by the staff and residents of the home. We painted the canteen, lift lobby and the therapy walkways. About 50 pairs of hands (and 4 paws—Christoph Hein's dog) participated in brightening up Bishan Home that day.

He is an accomplished hobby photographer who has been highly successful in using his skills to raise funds for charity.

RC Osaka OyodoOur Planned Sister-Club Visit to RC Osaka Oyodo The festive season is approaching fastly - and soon thereafter preparations for the Chinese New Year will start. Time is flying! So, this is to announce that the club is organising a visit by (hopefully many) members of our club to the Japanese sister club Osaka-Oyodo. They will be celebrating their 40th anniversary early next year. The date for the celebration we already know: it will be Thursday, 21 February 2013. They will hold a reception starting at noon followed by some other meetings and events planned for the entire day. And the day will close by a big dinner reception. We are aiming at leaving on a late-night flight to Osaka on Wednesday, 20 February. Flights usually leave short before or after midnight. We would arrive there in the morning. Albeit may be a bit taxing on us all, the day of arrival will be fully planned and booked with the above-outlined events (details to follow). On Friday and Saturday (22 and 23 February), the members of the Osaka-Oyodo club wish to show us around in the city and also in the vicinity of Osaka. That depends on how far we want to go. There is the historic icon city of Kyoto nearby - and also the even more ancient city of Nara. But also travelling South (a one-day bus tour only) there are scenic mountains found with very old temples (8th century) and other historic sites. Some may wish to stay longer. The first to depart would possibly be those leaving on Sunday, 23 February around noon. For the others: From skiing in the Japanese Alps to going South by Shinkan-sen to Kyushu for the hot springs and traditional hotels ... to a 3-hour trip by Shinkan-sen to Tokyo. Everything is possible. Interested? Please let us know. We will keep you informed. |

Ltd. Before his move to Singapore, he spent 25 years with Bayer, a major German pharmaceuticals and chemicals company. During his stint as CFO of Bayer Taiwan, Tomas was a member of the RC of Taipei.  |

We also explored the possibilities that this highspeed broadband network offers us in our daily lives, work, leisure and education.  |

Bishan Home Outing
Outing with Residents of the Bishan Home Rotarians and Rotaractors from our Club (RCMC) and the Rotaract Club of Marina City turned up in force for an outing with the Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled on 27 October. Residents from the Home had requested to be taken to lunch at McDonald’s at Ang Moh Kio Park. They were ferried there in a brand-new van donated by our Club. |

Wednesday 29 May 2024 in the evening, at the Tanglin Club, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our Club. The Club was founded in December 1984, but we couldn’t miss the opportunity to celebrate it while the Rotary International Convention was going on here in Singapore. In fact, to celebrate with us we had our Sister Clubs Pontian (Malaysia), Dusit (Bangkok), Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), and we had an exceptional Guest of Honor, Gary Huang Past Rotary International President accompanied by his spouse Corinne.
