Rotary keeps members hearts warm

In cold countries, people often wear layers of clothing to keep our bodies warm, but layers of happiness can also be useful to keep our hearts warm. Here's an example.

On Sunday, 20 August, 2023, I had the pleasure of participating in a beach cleanup organized by Rotary Club of Marina City. Layers upon layers of happiness warmed my heart during that outing.

One layer of happiness was that the event took place at one of my favorite areas of Singapore: East Coast Park, a 15 kilometer strip of beach front, which I used to visit frequently but hadn't been to for more than a year.

Another warming layer of happiness came from meeting fellow Rotarians. I'm new to Rotary and was impressed to meet long-time members, including members of families consisting of generations of Rotarians. Seeing their dedication inspired me.

One last happiness-generating layer deserves mention. I enjoyed helping clean the beach. Singapore has a reputation as a green country, but maintaining that reputation depends on individuals and organizations such as Rotary working to keep our country green. It was especially heartening to hear other parkgoers thank my fellow Rotarians and me for our efforts.

All in all, Rotary's beach cleaning effort didn't take up much of our Sundays, but it brought layers of sunshiny happiness to me and the other Rotarians.
