Bishan Home
Colours & Cheers: Mural Painting at Bishan Home
Last Sunday, 24 February, we continued our long-term cooperation with the Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled by bringing a touch of colour to the common area of the home.
Members of Rotary Club of Marina City and youths from the Rotaract Club of Marina City and the Interact Club of Dunman Secondary School came together for the project. The outcome of the hard work and creative expression was warmly received by the staff and residents of the home. We painted the canteen, lift lobby and the therapy walkways. About 50 pairs of hands (and 4 paws—Christoph Hein's dog) participated in brightening up Bishan Home that day.
We have been working hand in hand with the Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled for the past two years. From donating a van used to transport patients to outings and interactions with the residents, we have had the pleasure of giving cheer and assistance to the residents of the home.
The idea for the murals was mooted in 2012 by PE Daisy Irani and President Michael Witt, and PP Penelope Phoon-Cohen (Community Service Chair) and PP June Jonet (Interact Advisor & PR Chair) took charge of the rather complex logistics. A number of difficult choices had to be made, including the type of paint, which needed to be especially fast-drying, transportation for the Interactors, meals for everyone, and planned interaction with the residents (which had to be cancelled due to a stomach flue going around among the residents).
PE Daisy Irani also arranged for a video crew from Mediacorp to cover the event and interview folks from the Bishan Home as well as our youths on why they are passionate about community involvement programmes.
