These three know what it means to be a Rotarian

Each Rotary Club has core members that impress the rest of the club with their dedication and energy. For the Rotary Club of Marina City, Edward Quek, Lye Wah, and Gladys Pang embody what it means to be a Rotarian.

Tara explained, “Our club participates in global grants and projects with our sister clubs which require travel to check on the projects, participate in work, and get involved in the opening ceremonies. And it is this trio that gets results when they participate in projects and when they travel to do work on-site.”

In December 2019 the band of three attended the Rotary Institute held in Manila. Edward said “The Rotary Institute in Manila was informative, fulfilling, and fun!” Edward also went on to explain that there are many training benefits of the institute and encouraged Marina City Rotarians to sign up for next year’s Rotary Institute the 29 November to 1 December 2020!

In January 2020 the trio travelled again, but this time to an area near Hue, Vietnam to visit three global grant projects. Gladys shared, “The International Chair organized the trip to Vietnam for the three lead clubs – our club, RC Singapore, and RC Queenstown. More than 30 Rotarians from 11 clubs including the District Governor Jeff Yong joined this exciting trip fostering much camaraderie and fellowship.”

Gladys further explained that the global grant projects-built classroom-based libraries in Cam Lo and Quang Tri that benefits 4,000 students, a chicken rearing project for 150 families, and a water sanitation project benefiting 320 families and a kindergarten.

The library project, which our club helped to sponsor, was designed to provide contemporary education to children in remote areas and to promote English language learning. The books will be rotate among classes to ensure the children will have access to enough books as well as a variety of books. Training workshops will also be conducted for librarians, teachers, and principals.
