Outing with Residents of the Bishan Home

Rotarians and Rotaractors from our Club (RCMC) and the Rotaract Club of Marina City turned up in force for an outing with the Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled on 27 October.  Residents from the Home had requested to be taken to lunch at McDonald’s at Ang Moh Kio Park.  They were ferried there in a brand-new van donated by our Club.

RCMC presented the van to the Bishan Home in June 2012 as a major Community Service project for the Rotary Year 2011/2012.  In 2011, after learning that the Home needed another vehicle to take its residents to day care and medical appointments, RCMC launched an appeal for funds from District 3310 DDF. We further obtained support from the Rotary Club of Bandar Seri Begawan and the Foundation of Rotary Clubs (Singapore) as well as the Crocodile Foundation. A matching grant from The Rotary Foundation helped carry the project to fruition.

The outing last Saturday allowed us to experience first-hand bonding with the residents.  In addition to enjoying a “happy meal,” everyone had a lovely time with PP Lye Wah leading the group in a sing-along session. We hope for our involvement with the Home to be long-term, with more activities to come.
