July 6040 District Connection NewsIn this final message as District Governor, I want to convey my feelings about how great an opportunity we have to impact the world as members of Rotary International. The theme chosen for the ’20-’21 year, could not have been more appropriate. It was a simple “Rotary Opens Opportunities”. When the new theme was chosen by RI President Elect Holger Knaack in the fall of 2019 and when it was first introduced publicly to the International Assembly when I was in the audience in January 2020, no one had yet heard of Covid. We all expected our Rotary year would go pretty much as before with goals of making some differences. Little did we know 6 weeks later much in our lives, including Rotary would be changed. Our meeting styles, service projects, fundraisers, membership and District events were all impacted or canceled this year. But we all had the opportunities to make changes and do Rotary in some different ways. Now, as we all get back to more and more normal, I hope we will take advantage of this year to continue to take opportunities to make changes in areas we need to improve within our Clubs. If the changes help Rotary expand our membership and our mission to “do good for others” around the world, we can look back and not only say, we survived, but also say we thrived in ways that will make a difference in future years. In my Club visits, I used several quotes which have helped me keep focus this year. Like Churchhill’s “A pessimist see difficulty in every opportunity. An optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.” Paul Harris said “This is a changing world; we must be prepared to change with it. The story of Rotary will be written again and again.” That was in 1935 in the heart of the Great Depression. He also said “May our happiness increase with our usefulness. What Rotary will be 100 years hence, none living can imagine. There is nothing impossible to Rotary now.” Friends, we are in Rotary’s second 100 years now. Rotary’s legacy is ours now! We are fortunate to have Past RI President Ray Klinginsmith in our District as a member of the Rotary Club of Kirksville. Ray once said “Rotary has changed the world, and Rotarians will continue to change it in a positive way. The formula is simple. For us to succeed, all we need to do is to focus our best efforts on doing what Rotarians are passionate about and what Rotarians are the best in the world doing, which is “Building Communities – Bridging Continents”. Rotarians, Rotary is an incredible worldwide organization like no other. The opportunities for you, I, and your Club’s to impact your communities and our world are endless. It’s been my great pleasure to serve as your District Governor. All the best to you and your Club’s in your pursuit of “Service Above Self” "Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change -- across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves." Highlights - Global Grant for Honduras PPETo All 6040 Rotarians Greetings, As we near the end of this Rotary year, I was thinking how different it was expected to be in January 2020 when I was together with all the other 527 incoming District Governors from around the world. It was a thrilling week that I will never forget. No one I know had ever heard of Covid then. Yet, it disrupted and changed many things over the last 18 months. For instance, back then, I expected to be in Taiwan today experiencing a great Rotary International Convention. I also expected to be in Hawaii for the Convention last June. Because of Covid’s impact around the world and the travel restrictions, both conventions were changed to virtual convention. I am enjoying it right now, but believe me watching it from the couch is not the same as experiencing it in person. When we get back to normal, I encourage all of you to put attending one on your bucket list. (cont'd.) |

Annual Rotary Business MeetingMy apologies for using the wrong date in the email I sent last night regarding the Annual Business Meeting. It is scheduled for June 22 rather than May 22. The Zoom link was correct. May 22 was a big part of Rotary life this spring with all that went into the Foundation Celebration. Fascinating and frustrating how the brain works sometimes! I will copy the original email with the correct date and attachments below. This email is directed to all 6040 Rotarians relating to the annual business meeting. According to the Rotary International Bylaws, we need to have a District business meeting every Rotary year to present the Immediate Past District Governors financial report, the minutes from last year’s annual meeting as well as the District Governor Elect’s budget for the 2020-2021 Rotary year. This would normally happen at a District Assembly but do to Covid restrictions, we moved our Annual Foundation Dinner from the fall to a Zoom Foundation Celebration in May. So, we will hold this meeting via ZOOM as a virtual meeting which Rotary's board has approved for all Rotary business during this pandemic on June 22 at 6pm. The attached documents include IPDG Marc Horner’s financial report from the 2019-2020 year. Also, attached is the budget for Rotary year 2020-2021 from District Governor-Elect David McCaughey. You will also find attached the Rotary District 6040 proxy certification document that explains the number of votes based on club membership and the voting procedure. If the club President cannot attend they can identify a proxy who will vote in their stead. The Club President and Club Secretary need to certify who will serve as the Proxy for your club by sending Johnah Terbovic the proxy statement; via email, with the Proxy's name on it to rotary6040office@gmail.com |

Dist. 6040 June 8 Connection (2021)Thank You All!A big THANK YOU to every Rotarian in the District for the success of our recent District Foundation Celebration Event on May 22,2021. Our 21st annual Foundation fundraising and recognition event was a big success. The recognition of the Clubs and the "People of Action" District Grant project video went very well. This year, we also added a second video with a very good update on our District Global grant projects. On May 22, at our Foundation Celebration we raised approximately $70,000 for the Annual Fund/Share through Rotary Club sponsorships, individual ticket registrations, silent auction proceeds and raffle ticket sales. The final figure will be determined after expenses. [cont'd. online] |

District 6040-April ConnectionVirtual Foundation CelebrationPlease plan to join our Zoom Foundation Celebration on Saturday evening, May 22. This event will replace the 6040 Foundation Dinner that we had to cancel, due to Covid last November. This will be a fun evening where we will celebrate the Foundation results of the ’19 -‘20 year and the Kimbrough Challenge made possible by a successful legacy dinner in 2017 and the generous donation by Ed and Margaret Kimbrough from the Huntsville Club. Our guest speaker will be Brenda Cressey. Brenda made Rotary history when she became the first woman to serve as The Rotary Foundation Trustee’s Chair. For many years, she has been involved in significant Foundation and Polio fundraising efforts for The Foundation. This event is a significant part of our annual fundraising efforts for the Foundation. The funds available for District and Global Grants in 3 years are determined by our Annual Fund contributions this Rotary year. Throughout the evening we will have the opportunity to participate in raffles and auctions that will take place online this year. Clubs and Individuals can also contribute by being a sponsor of the event. Several Clubs are planning their own watch parties. They are planning to gather as a Club, in small groups or as individuals to enjoy and participate in the Celebration via Zoom. I am looking forward to seeing everyone around the District that evening as we Celebrate all the good The Foundation does locally and around the world. District Governor Don Gladhart |

District Governor March UpdateWelcome to March and Springtime!Hopefully, we are nearing the light at the end of the tunnel of Covid with all the tragedies and challenges it has wrought for the last year. I am very thankful that Karen and I received our first vaccine last week. Thank you for all you have done in your Club over these months to keep the Club moving forward. For over 40 years, March has brought the annual President Elects training for our District and two others in Missouri. The Show Me Rotary PETS is considered one of the best and oldest Presidents Elect training in the world. For the past four years, curriculum has been developed for the President Nominees. The President-Elect’s will start their term in July. The President Nominees will serve starting in July 2022. Last year, less than a month before we were to have PETS it was canceled due to Covid. We duplicated some of the material with our own virtual training. This year we will be all virtual again on March 27th. I know many hours have gone into planning and implementing this important training for a virtual environment. 6040 PDG Cassy Venters is the President of Show Me Council this year. The President rotates between the three Districts each year. PDG Julie McCoy will serve as President of the Show Me Rotary PETS in three years. Registration is still open now for each Club’s President Elect and President Nominee. Each Club has already paid for them to attend. Please encourage both to attend. Attending my first PETS was one of the three great experiences I have had in Rotary that propelled my passion for Rotary. It’s a great experience – don’t miss the opportunity! [cont'd] |

Rotary Birthday 2021Fellow RotariansPlease mark your calendars for Tuesday February 23, 2021.WHY?IT ROTARY’S BIRTHDAY!!!!In this year of a pandemic, social unrest and tougher economic times for many, let’s take a moment to Celebrate the Good that is Rotary SO WHY PARTY LIKE ITS 1926? In this country, turning 21 is something of a Rite of Passage, a sign of maturity & (in theory) responsibility. I know- It’s also that thing about drinking legally but keep in mind, in 1926 Prohibition was going on so that probably wasn’t happening. I choose to focus on the maturity & responsibility because Rotary turned 21 in 1926. Hopefully we all can embrace this Rite of Passage one more time and do something that will have an impact on our communities for years to come |

Shoes 4 Orphaned SoulsAs you may have heard, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the Shoes for Orphan Souls project in Rotary District 6040 – and this is the start of “shoes season!”Since the start of the program in 2001, District 6040 Rotarians have generously donated 356,000 pairs of shoes. (That’s three hundred fifty-six thousand lives touched by YOUR generosity. So far.) For this anniversary year, our Shoes Cheerleader, Larry Lunsford, has issued a challenging but inspiring goal: to collect 20,000 pairs of shoes for distribution to orphans and other vulnerable, economically challenged children in Honduras! To help in achieving that goal, he has prepared a challenge video, which you can see on the D 6040 Facebook page or on YouTube. https://youtu.be/2sunz-9lkRc Now, we need your help. Please begin the process of collecting shoes, appointing your shoes drive chairperson and rallying your club and your community to the effort. (The video has details.) Go to the District 6040 Facebook page, “like, comment and share” this video to your club’s Facebook page, to help give the project visibility to your members and throughout the community. If practical, please show this video at an upcoming club meeting to inform and challenge your members to great levels of – as the video says – uncommon generosity. Let’s make 2021 a great year for shoes, and for the children of Honduras. Thank you for your efforts, and for being a Rotarian! passing of Shirley ManserSad News of the passing of Shirley Manser, wife of Australian GSE team leader Arthur ManserDear Rotarian Friends in District 6040, I know many of you became friends with Group Study Exchange (GSE) team leader, Arthur Manser, when he visited our district from Australia. Sadly his wife, Shirley died suddenly yesterday. I have been in contact with Kim Harvey, DG 2018-19, or my counterpart during that Rotary year. She sent me the following message regarding Shirley's death. Both Arthur and Shirley were completely vested in Rotary. Memorials are suggested to be made to the Rotary Foundation which can be made at the rotary.org website which has a donate button at the top right corner of each page. You can let Arthur know your thoughts, kind words, donations via email at amanser@bigpond.net.au or on his Facebook page titled Arthur Manser. Please keep Arthur and his family in your thoughts and prayers...Julie McCoy, DG 6040 2018-19 From Kim Harvey: We had some sad news today that I thought you and those involved in our wonderful GSE program 2018-19 would wish to know about. I am sorry to tell you that Shirley Manser, wife of GSE Team Leader PDG Arthur Manser, passed away yesterday (Jan 15). Her passing was sudden and unexpected - an accident on Wednesday at her home which left her with a significant brain injury. It has been a terrible shock for Arthur and his family and for Shirley’s friends in Rotary. Shirley was also a Rotarian and I was so happy to be asked to present her with a PHF Sapphire during my first official DG Club visit. She was a beautiful soul with a kind heart and a great love for Arthur and their family. I know that Arthur made some lovely friendships during his GSE experience in Missouri and has always spoken so highly of you Julie. If you could kindly pass on this news to the relevant Rotarians in your District I would be most grateful. Please stay safe and well. With kind regards Kim Harvey |

That was Close! (DG news)To all 6040 Rotarians Dear Shane, Whew! That was close. What a game. I’m sure many of you just finished watching the Chiefs pull out another win in the last minute. Patrick Mahomes said after the game “players make plays”. Just like the Chiefs, we are that close to finishing the fundraising to help Honduras with desperately needed PPE for frontline medical workers in 26 Covid clinics around the country. Our district, through the Waldo Brookside Club and the Villa Real de Tegucigalpa Rotary Club in Honduras have put together a global grant to purchase a six month supply of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). They have been reusing supplies that was meant to be disposable in their work with Covid patients, because they have no choice. To make matters worse, Honduras has been hit with two Category 4 Hurricanes in the last three weeks. There has been massive flooding and damage throughout the country. This will only increase the Covid spread because so many people are displaced. The attached pictures show the situation. The way this $165,800 grant has been put together allows Clubs, individual Rotarians and other Districts to participate in this effort. Any contributions you make will be counted as Rotary Foundation donations. You will receive credit for them. A deadline of December 1 has been established because of the urgent need to complete this grant, purchase the equipment, and ship it to Honduras. Tonight, we are $9000 short of our goal. If you or your Club would like to contribute $250 or more, please let Karyn Eppler ( Eppler.karyn@gmail.com ) or myself know what amount you are pledging. If you have questions, please let us know. Thank you much to all the Clubs and individuals who have already contributed. Thanks to all for all the good you do through Rotary everyday. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as we enter this unique holiday season. Don Gladhart District Governor 2020-21 Rotary International District 6040 816.244.2571 |

November 2020-District ConnectionTo all 6040 Rotarians: Greetings on the first day after Daylight Savings time ended. It was beautiful day topped off with a nice Chiefs win! It sure got dark early, though! As many of you know, November is Foundation month on the Rotary calendar. Unfortunately, we had to postpone our Foundation Dinner which was originally scheduled on the 7th. The good news is it has been rescheduled to May 22. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS for May 22. We will have the Foundation Dinner that evening. We will also have our District Conference during the day. These events will be held at the KCI Embassy suites. We have had several Foundation Dinners there in the past. They have remodeled. I think it will be an excellent location. Due to Covid, they like almost every hotel around the world, have had a very poor year. Their staff is eager to have us back and I expect we will have a first class experience during our time together to celebrate The Rotary Foundation and all the good they do around the world. I am eager to see you all again! It will also be a great time to send off Larry Lunsford and Elizabeth Usovicz as they start their new responsibilities in July. Larry will become a Rotary Foundation Trustee and Elizabeth will become an RI Director leading Zones 30 and 31. Both are 6040 Past District Governors and members of the Kansas City Plaza Club. This is a preview of a wonderful opportunity to help frontline medical people in Honduras working with patients with Covid 19. The 26 designated COVID Care facilities across their country are starved for PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Their initial supplies (masks, overalls, gloves, caps) were of a poor quality and replacements are unavailable. The health care workers have been making their own and re-using damaged PPE. I have seen pictures of the overcrowded conditions and talked in zooms with Rotarians there (some who are healthcare workers) whose Club will be our Partner on this Global Grant our District is putting together. The Waldo Brookside Club has stepped forward to be the lead Club from our District. My vision is we will have many other 6040 Clubs and individual Rotarians who will want to partner with us in this effort. The District Executive Council has approved using $60,000 of our Global District Designated Funds that will be matched by $60,000 from the Rotary Foundation’s World Fund. Our goal is to have at least $160,000 total by one month from today, December 1st. Because time is so critical for the workers who need this PPE equipment, we are submitting the grant for whatever we have pledged on December 1st. More information will be sent to the Clubs tomorrow. If you have questions, please contact myself or Karyn Eppler, 6040 Global Grants Chair at eppler.karyn@gmail.com As you know, our theme this year is Rotary Opens Opportunities. Thank you for considering this opportunity. Shoes for Orphan Souls – 20th year. Head Shoes Cheerleader, Larry Lunsford who started this tremendous effort to put Shoes on Orphans around the world, twenty years ago has established a tentative schedule for the Shoes Caravan to pick up the Shoes you collect during May. It will lead up to our annual Shoes roll call at the District Conference, which will proceed the Foundation Dinner on May 22. Over the years, our Clubs have contributed over 355,000 pairs of shoes and $176,000. Let’s make this special 20th anniversary of SOS a record year. Now, is the time to start making special plans to make it a record in your Club. Since this has been such an unusual and challenging year, let’s get an early start and make it an unusually great Shoe campaign! Thank you for all you do for Rotary. Make it a great month! District Governor September UpdateGreetings Rotarians, I hope you and your family are doing well. I just finished reading Larry Lunsford’s email about the upcoming roll call for the 2020 Shoes for Orphan Souls caravan. Make sure you tune in on that. It’s always an exciting event! One of my first years in Rotary, I was asked to be the SOS chair for my Club. I definitely list the shoe drive, as one of my highlights in Rotary. As a result, of a successful shoe campaign, I was named Club Champion. The District Conference that year was in Kirksville. Jeff Romine, from Kirksville, was the District Governor. He asked each Club to name a Champion and come to Kirksville for the District Conference. That was my first Conference. There is no question that Conference was one of my top three turning points in fueling my Rotary passion. It was my first Shoes for Orphan Souls roll call. At dinner, I was at the table with Carl Chinnery. Later on, I heard Carl read his Mother’s letter about how Carl and all his siblings contracted Polio, for the first time. Incredibly, Ray Klinginsmith, who was serving as Rotary International President, was also in attendance. And, at the breakfast buffet the last morning, I had a good conversation with Duane Benton. What an incredible experience! Today, I am fortunate to call Ray, Larry, Carl, Jeff and Duane as some of my best Rotary friends. And to think, that it all started because I agreed to collect some shoes for children in orphanages in some far-off land. Our theme this year, is Rotary Opens Opportunities. Believe, me it does! Folks, the shoes collection we make this year for the caravan in 2021 will be the 20th anniversary of the Shoes for Orphan Souls campaign. Let’s get started and set another record in ’21. As we wind down August and membership month, it’s time for all of us to look back and see how we did. This year, more than ever, it is important for all of us to take up the mantle of growing our membership. With all the challenges facing us individually and as Rotarians due to Covid 19, it’s important for us to focus on attracting new members and retaining our existing members. If there’s a Rotarian in your club you haven’t seen in a while, please reach out to them and see how they’re doing. As you come across people in your daily activities - coworkers, relatives, neighbors, church friends, other members in professional groups like the Chamber of Commerce or a cause based group you are in; invite them to your Rotary Club meeting. Or, just have some coffee and introduce them to the world’s greatest service organization. Our membership concerns would go away, if “each one reached one”! Please make it a personal goal this year to introduce a prospect to Rotary. September’s theme is Basic Education and Literacy. I know many Clubs have a special focus on Literacy. Please be creative and continue to give this important area your attention. Today, millions of our children are learning in a new environment. Globally, many children who have everyday challenges with education availability are really struggling with shutdowns and quarantines. Many of the world’s children have no access to digital learning. Thank you for all you are doing to support your Club and The Rotary Foundation. Make September a great month. Don Gladhart District Governor 2020-21 Rotary International District 6040 816.244.2571 |

Greetings from your Rotary International presidentGreetings, fellow Rotarians and Rotaractors! I am so honored to serve as your president this year. We have important work ahead of us at Rotary, and we are going to have a lot of fun as we do it. Last year, we launched our five-year Action Plan to build a stronger future for Rotary. We are working to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt. The last several months have shown that we — as Rotarians and Rotaractors — can realize these goals as we forge a new path for the future. Without question, COVID-19 has posed new and previously unimaginable challenges for Rotary. But within every challenge is perhaps an even greater opportunity. And while I could not have known what lay ahead when I selected my theme for the year, Rotary Opens Opportunities has even greater relevance as we begin our new Rotary year. I am incredibly inspired by how our members have adapted and responded to COVID-19. This global pandemic has made it difficult for many of our clubs to operate as usual, but we persevered, and over the past few months, I’ve enjoyed connecting with my fellow Rotarians and Rotaractors in a new way: by visiting hundreds of clubs from my home. It’s been fun to attend so many meetings virtually. If you haven’t already, I encourage your club to try an online meeting or add an online component, like hosting a guest speaker from a Rotary or Rotaract club located in a different part of the world. As we build a stronger future for our organization, it’s good that we are reaching out to new people and introducing them to Rotary. It’s important that our clubs reflect the communities we serve. More diverse voices in our clubs and in our leadership will help Rotary stay in touch with a changing world. So let’s find every opportunity to show we value each and every member. Let’s seize this moment to build on what we’ve learned, to embrace our new reality, to welcome new faces, and to find additional ways to shine. This is how we will have a continuing impact on the world. And if you need assistance along the way, Rotary offers many resources that can help you reach your goals. Rotary means different things in different parts of the world, but we are all united by our core values and by The Four-Way Test. Rotary may change, but our values remain constant. I look forward to hearing about how you’re finding new opportunities to engage and make an impact in your club and community. Rotary Opens Opportunities, both for the people we serve and for ourselves. Thank you. Holger Knaack |

Letter from DG-Don Gladhart-8/2Greetings 6040 Rotarians, It’s been about six months since we started hearing about the Coronavirus. Much in our personal world and literally the entire globe has changed. It has affected our Clubs in various ways. While little of the impact has been positive, one thing that has been a plus is that we have all become familiar with Zoom or some other virtual service that allows us to broadcast our meetings and stay in touch with each other in an easy manner. Because we Rotarians are known as leaders in our communities and professional lives, I am hopeful that with one month of the Rotary year behind us, we are ready to jump start a vigorous pursuit of our Rotary Club goals for ‘20 – ‘21. These are challenging times. But, I am confident we are an innovative group that will find ways to make an impact and a real difference this year through Rotary. I saw this quote recently which made me realize why Rotary took off as fast as it did in the early decades and grew to be such a powerful force of service to the world. In 1935, amid the Great Depression, Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary said “This is a changing world; we must be prepared to change with it. The story of Rotary will be written again and again.” I believe now is the time to apply that same spirit to examine how we do things. In the middle of this pandemic, it’s a good year to give our Club’s a checkup. Is there anything we need to update in our routine to make ourselves more appealing to new members? What do we need to change to be sure we will be relevant for the next 100 years? August is membership month. There’s never been an August that’s more important for membership than this year due to the changes in our club activity because of the pandemic. Our District numbers are down from last year. Now is the time to start ramping up your membership initiatives. As Clubs, we have to focus on both current member retention and new member attraction. I urge Club leaders and membership chairs to engage everyone in this effort. There is no better or simpler solution to our membership challenges than “each one reach one”. Think of how our Club’s would look in June if each one of our current members made a good effort to recruit a good prospect. Who do you know in the community, in your neighborhood, through your business or church; who would make a good Rotarian? Invite them to a meeting and have coffee (maybe virtual coffee) to tell them about all the wonderful things Rotary is doing to make a difference in this world! Another membership effort we all need to focus on is attracting younger members. RI President Holger Knaack has asked each Club, to ask themselves “what will our Club look like in 25 years?” If you think about that as you read this and then later in a strategic meeting of the Club to address this issue, I think it will become apparent how important it is that we become very intentional about recruiting younger members. Our District Membership efforts are led by PDG Marc Horner this year. Marc is working on a major overhaul of our membership section on the District website. We are also putting together a series of educational zooms for membership and several other important areas in the coming months to support your efforts. I want you to know that the Executive Council decided this week to postpone the Foundation Dinner which was scheduled for November 7 in Kansas City. This is an important annual Foundation fundraising event for us. Because of the unknown crowd size restrictions related to Covid 19 and the current concerns of many about being in any large group, we decided that it was best to postpone until the Spring. In the coming weeks we will make a decision on a date. By that time, I am hopeful that we will have a vaccine and we will feel more comfortable gathering live, as well as virtual. It was just announced that the My Rotary website is now much faster and easier to navigate. It has an enhanced search function and streamlined workflows. Plus, it’s now assessable on all mobile devices. If you are not familiar with My Rotary, please take an opportunity to get acquainted. Not only is there a lot of inspiring Rotary news and stories, there are many great tools such as the Learning Center, the Branding Center and Rotary Central. These and much more will enhance your Rotary experience. Ready to begin using the updated My Rotary? Get started here at https://my.rotary.org/en Just register and you are ready to roll. Thank you for all you do for Rotary. Make it a great month! Don Gladhart District Governor 2020-21 Rotary International District 6040 816.244.2571 |

6040 District Governor Update-2020/21
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
DG Don Gladhard (2020-2021)To: All 6040 Rotarians Greetings 6040 Rotarians, It is my great pleasure to serve as your District Governor for 2020-21. When the calendar turned to 2020, we had no idea that a pandemic was a few weeks away. In fact, in January two of my life’s great events happened. All 528 incoming District Governors from around the world gathered in San Diego for a week of training. It was never clearer to me how incredible Rotary International’s global footprint is. Six weeks later, nearly all of the 203 Countries with Rotary Clubs were impacted by the Coronavirus. The second great event was the Kansas City Chiefs kept winning and won the Super Bowl for the first time since I was in University. Obviously, it has been a unique and challenging year so far. I know many of our Club’s, their events and our Rotarians personal lives have been disrupted since March. However, while there is still uncertainty, we have the opportunity to make it a great year. When incoming RI President Holger Knaack revealed his theme for ’20-’21, he chose “Rotary Opens Opportunities”. Given what has happened, it is more appropriate than ever. Take a few minutes to consider all the Opportunities Rotary has Opened for you. Then, take a few more minutes and consider all the possible opportunities open through our Clubs, our District and Rotary International. Rotarians are often known for their leadership in our communities. This year, we have the opportunity to expand our impact on our communities and the world through Rotary. We are part of the World’s Greatest Service Organization. The Possibilities are Endless! For the past twelve years, I have been a member of the Rotary Club of St Joseph #32. My wife Karen and I have 3 wonderful children who live in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arizona: along with our beautiful grandchildren. There aren't enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe how we feel about our grandchildren. Having been around them for several days recently, it also makes me realize how many children around the world are suffering today because of their circumstances. Once again, Rotary offers opportunity after opportunity to support children, mothers, literacy, clean water, and much more. I am pleased to serve with a great group of Rotarians on the Executive Council this year. The Council consists of Immediate Past District Governor Marc Horner, DGE David McCaughey, DGN Kent Shelman, DGND Randy Steinman, Treasure Shelly Hulet, Secretary Ruth Bowers and PDG Kim LeSage who now serves as our District Foundation Chair. This is a dedicated group of individuals representing District Clubs across Northern Missouri. Our executive secretary, Jonah Terbovic will continue with us. We are well-positioned for leadership over the next several years with this outstanding group. District 6040 leadership also includes 13 Assistant Governors and numerous Program Chairs and their committees. We are also fortunate to have 56 hard-working Club Presidents leading their Clubs daily. All these leaders, join a long list who have served our District over the years, including Past RI President’s, RI Directors and Past District Governors. All these truly represent “Service Above Self”. Despite our current challenges, let’s make it a great year! One of my favorite writers is CS Lewis. He once said “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” We are truly fortunate to have Past RI President Ray Klinginsmith living in District 6040 and a member of the Rotary Club of Kirksville. 10 years ago, when he was the International President, Ray wrote in the Rotarian magazine “Rotary has changed the world, and Rotarians will continue to change it in a positive way. The formula is simple. For us to succeed, all we need to do is to focus our best efforts on doing what Rotarians are passionate about and what Rotarians are the best in the world doing, which is Building Communities – Bridging Continents”. Thank you for all you are doing and will do for Rotary this year. Don Gladhart District Governor 2020-21 Rotary International District 6040 816.244.2571 |

District 6040 Bulliten-Covid 19 editionRotarians, A short six months ago none of us had heard of Coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19. We had not sheltered in place or maintained social distancing. Instead we were gathering once a week to share stories, hear programs, have some camaraderie with our friends and to plan projects to better our communities and the world. Since early March we have been unable to meet physically and instead have adopted virtual ways to stay in touch, communicate and plan. Rotary may “Connect the World” but where we can have the greatest impact and where the need is greatest is in our own communities. We are putting out this special newsletter to make you aware of the efforts being made in your District; by clubs of all sizes, and in many ways to help their communities deal with the effects of this horrible pandemic. And a few ways we our helping other Rotarians around the world in this time of crisis. Please enjoy this newsletter in the hope that it will give you some ideas about ways your club can help your community in their time of need. |

Rotary District 6040 CommunicationsGreetings to all - Your District Communications and Public Image team (Stephanie Smith, David McCaughey, and Kirby Asplund) is working on a project to inform both Rotarians and our communities about the work that's being done during the lockdown. Stephanie is planning a special edition of the Rotary District 6040 Connection e-newsletter. We'll also post relevant information to the District Facebook page - to encourage and reach out to our fellow Rotarians, as well as getting the word out into our communities that Rotarians are #PeopleofAction - even in the face of a pandemic. Please take a moment to send me a message (kirbyasplund@aol.com) about what your club is up to to stay connected. For example -
Thank you for your input - and for everything you're doing for Rotary and for your community! Kirby Asplund Public Image Chair |

Desk of DG-Marc Horner(3/22)This email is to all District 6040 Rotarians. I don’t have to tell you that the COVID19 virus has changed our lives forever. I don’t have to remind you of the need for social distancing or for sheltering in place. Plenty of news on that end. What I do need to inform you is that we have decided to postpone our Rotary District Conference scheduled for April 24-26 at Margaritaville at the Lake of the Ozarks. We have already notified the folks who had reservations of the need to delay and now we are informing everyone. The hotel has instructed us that they will cancel all of the room reservations that were made through the link we sent out to so you do not need to call them. We have been working for the last week to develop an alternative. We have arranged with the resort to move the event until August 21-23, 2020. This is the weekend before the labor day weekend so it will be a late summer event at the lake. Guess what? The hotel is extending the same out of season rate, of $114.00 a night, to the August date at the height of their busy season. All the pools and restaurants will be open and the lake will be hoppin! Lots for the family to do and we will give you time to do it. The event will definitely be different than our original plan. More information on the rescheduled Four Way Test Speeches and Shoes for Orphan Souls rollcall will be coming out soon. In their place we will be adding training events that normally happen in mid-August at our REAL event. And we will still plan on providing you with super speakers, entertainment, a great service event brought to you by Rise Against Hunger, and hopefully some 2019-2020 awards as well. Do us a favor. If you have not registered and this looks interesting. Hit reply and type WOW. No commitment on your part but it will help us in the planning for the event. We hope to see you there. In the meantime we wish you the best of health. During this time of cancelled Rotary Club meetings please reach out to your fellow Rotarians and keep that Rotary core value of fellowship going. Yours in Rotary Service. Marc Horner and Don Gladhart |

ECR & LPS Comm. Food Kits - March (2 of 2)So.....Larry Wepler and Russell Weathers contacted the manger of HyVee and requested so assistance in providing some of the necessary provisions: Hello Everyone .... Russ and I are going to coordinate a small effort to help with this project. I just visited with Anna Stoermer, the Director of Hy-Vee and submitted the enclosed list to her. I asked, when practicable, for a case of each of these items. Even though she is pressed hard to keep the shelves of Hy-Vee fully stocked, she has graciously agreed to help as best as possible. She may not be able to supply all items but, anything will help. Russ and I will pay for the initial donation .... PLEASE NOTE: we are not asking for any donated goods from Hy-Vee. This could be an ongoing project for the near future ...... in lieu of no expense for our meals and the $250 we normally would be paying to a not for profit speaker once a month, we, as a club could underwrite this. Obviously, individual donations from our members would also help. ECR Teleconference Connection hintsAfter some researchfor affordable (best-FREE) video conferencing/meeting technology programs and offer the following. My premise/assumption is it be relatively easy to operate and be PC/MAC PC compliant, f it's available for mobile phone use too, GREAT! I've been told via a 3 day Facebook friends Poll that ZOOM is used by industry, education and person's alike (Liberty Chamber uses it for group meetings) so that shows it's fairly simple. SO...if you have a desktop with a webcam (built-in or stand-alone) then kewl. Most tablets have cam's built-in too (as do mobile phones) and you can receive your e-mail on it, we are in! The program supports connection with Outlook or Google Chrome calenders so we can mark future meeting days & times for connection. I set up a FREE host account (though ANYONE can get a free host account too) and the program supports up to 100 members online at a time with 40 minute meeting length max. A "PrO subscription (for $100/year) give you unlimited meeting length. An invite is as simple as opening an e-mail, which unpacks a free "Client" connection ( with option to download the operating program which is simple and small on space. I suggest downloading and installing the program PRIOR to signing in (it takes all of 5 minutes), but just going to the address on the invitation I'll send out will take you through installation and then launch! The program is fairly simple and easy to navigate, just make sure your camera and speakers are set for operation. Anyone interested for a test, email my e-mail address and keep 15 min open. Club shut in involvementIn the meantime, We are researching the possibility of Video Conference methods to convene. I've stated: 1) Skype ( hate it), 2) Facebook Video ( ackward with multi connection as far as I know) 3) and the only simple manner is "Zoom.us video teleconference ( which is $15/mo) 4) Facetime ( not an option to us non MAC folks ) that I am aware of! Roy has offered his corporate ZOOM account to meet. Anyone else have any suggestions? 2) It's been suggested we considered Local involvement with the School Backpack program or Feed Northland Kids for supplemental food for students trapped at home. Any Comments may be addressed to me Stephanie Kleyh (skleyh@sextonbender.com) or Myself (Shane) (simmelt405@gmail.com) for forwarding to the officers. |

Covid C00V19 Epidemic and Rotary 6040In the case of our District (District 6040) the following events are scheduled over the next two months that involve the travel and the mixing of Rotarians. ShowMe Rotary PETs assembly in Jefferson City, Missouri, the incoming Group Study Exchange team from Southern Africa and our District Conference at the Lake of the Ozarks. At present we expect no changes to these events. We are constantly monitoring the information we receive from Rotary International, the CDC and WHO in determining our response to this situation. See the latest Rotary information below in italics. Rotary is closely monitoring the outbreak of COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, and continuously assessing the potential impact on Rotary operations, events, and training meetings. UPDATE 3 March 2020 — With an increase in total global cases, we recommend that Rotary members and participants follow the guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and your national, regional, or local health authorities to protect the health and safety of our members and program participants. If it’s recommended, postpone or cancel in-person meetings or hold them online or by phone. If there are travel advisories, exercise caution, during district or club travel. If you have any questions about travel related to a global grant, contact your regional grants officer. Keep in mind that Rotary is a global organization serving many countries where the situation is much more involved than in the USA and their recommendation covers all countries served by Rotary. We understand the concerns that individual Rotarian's may have during this trying time and they should consider their own unique situations with regard to these events. We also realize the importance of Rotarian's joining together to share and grow. Expect additional emails with regard to this situation over the next few weeks. Yours in Rotary Service. Marc Horner |

Membership & RecruitingDale Carnegie said that a person’s name is his or her favorite word in the world. There are many advantages to remembering someone’s favorite word. Recalling and using someone’s name:
So, who's name will you learn today. Who will you introduce yourself to and invite to Rotary! The membership contest continues through the end of March. The flyer with more details is attached along with a tally sheet to log those points! March Madness is in the AIR! I hope Rotary is too! Julie McCoy District 6040 Membership Chair 660-752-3128 Choosing - Did you know that the role of Neo in The Matrix was first offered to Will Smith? Kenau Reeves, of course, took the red pill, but Will's decision to pass got me thinking about the value of missed opportunities. I sat by a New Rotarian recently at a club meeting I was attending. The New Rotarian was not from that community. I asked her why she didn't join the Rotary club where her home was located. Her reply "They didn't ask me!" My brother recently joined the KCI club and my nephew joined the Lee's Summit Club last year. All because I reached out to those clubs and let them know I had a good prospect for them. We learn from the action we take and we also learn from inaction. Who can you reach out to and invite to Rotary this week? Who can you recommend to a Rotary Club? Who haven't you asked to join your club? Remember our Membership Contest continues during the month of March...Invite someone to Rotary, Post those pictures, Refer those friends and family to other Club. I have attached the flyer again with all the details! Invite someone to Rotary today! Julie McCoy District 6040 Membership Chair 660-752-3128 |

HFA Top Awards-2019 for Greg CrowleyCongratulations Greg Crowley- ECRotarianTrailblazer Award Recipient-HFA
The Home Furnishings Association recently announced their top awards for 2019: Howell Furniture, Brakenridge Furniture, Greg Crowley of Crowley Furniture & Mattress and Joe Bright of Dunk & Bright Furniture.
“We could not be any prouder of Howell Furniture,” said Sharron Bradley, CEO of the Home Furnishings Association. “Although it has a long history in Beaumont, it perhaps has never been more important to its hometown than in recent years when it provided desperately needed assistance to families who lost their homes and belongings to Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019. The owners and staff are truly wonderful neighbors to their customers and fellow residents of the Gulf Coast region.”
“Greg is a successful and respected businessman but so much more,” Bradley said. “He is truly a leader is raising awareness about and addressing safety issues concerning home furnishings products. His long-time partnership with Charlie’s House, a children’s safety organization in Kansas City, provides a model for proactive engagement with the problem of furniture tip-overs.” |

District 6040 Foundation Dinner resultsI wanted to thank each and every Rotarian in the District for the success of our recent District Foundation Dinner. Our 20th Foundation fundraising and recognition event was a big success. We got to enjoy a wonderful talk by Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney and an equally great impromptu speech from his wonderful wife Gay Maloney. Those of you who were not there will have to ask one of the attendees how that transpired. The recognition of the clubs and the "People of Action" District Grant project awards went very well and the video of our District Grant projects was awesome. The atmosphere at Arrowhead was wonderful and the decorations were beautiful. [cont'd. below]

Group Study Exchange Outbound teamI have a very personal request; it’s about the Group Study Exchange trip to the Dominican Republic that is scheduled for January 2020 and lasts for a month. We need two more team members, and I need your help to find them. D4060 District Governor Manuel Gomez-Achecar and I have become good friends. I promised him that he would have good representation from District 6040. You may have met or heard of the Dominican Republic GSE team members who traveled throughout our district this fall. They were delightful guests who were very proud of their beautiful island country and represented their District well. I have traveled in the Dominican Republic and it is a wonderful country with friendly people. Bill Schmidt, our GSE Team Captain, is an accomplished international traveler with multiple visits to Africa and Haiti. You will be staying with Rotarians throughout the trip and staying in their homes. As already noted above, the trip begins in late January and ends in late February. All expenses are paid, except for personal items. Our goal is to send young professionals, but there really is no age limit. Rotarians and non-Rotarians are eligible to apply. We had hoped to have selected four team members by now, since there is some training and coordination involved. So I encourage you to be an applicant or to find a good applicant ASAP. Rotary Foundation Giving-2019Why give the gift of Rotary? Because your donation will make a difference in this world by helping people in need — from supplying vaccine drops that protect a child from polio to training peacebuilders who’ll strive for a future with less conflict. The Rotary Foundation funds the work of Rotary members who provide sustainable solutions to their communities’ most pressing needs, but we need your help. With a gift today, we can make lives better in your community and around the world. Please consider giving the gift of Rotary so together we can keep Doing Good in the World. |

Rotary Dist 6040 December ConnectionRotarians, December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month. Our most important and obvious Disease Prevention program is our organizations' commitment to eradicating Polio everywhere in the World. Our District’s role in that area of service this year is focused on our Chinnery Challenge. My request that all of our clubs participate in some kind of Polio awareness and fundraising effort during this Rotary year. But we have other very important disease prevention projects we are participating in as well. One of our Districts other efforts in disease prevention involves our investment, along with many other districts in the Nigerian Family Health Days project. Over 140,000 people were screened at 152 different sites for a variety of diseases, received treatment when available and at the very least were directed to providers of the various services they required. This is a huge endeavor in Nigeria and would not be possible without District 6040 through the Liberty, Missouri Rotary Club acting as the Sponsor for this project. Obviously our many water and sanitation projects directly contribute towards disease prevention but I will deal with those in another month’s newsletter. |

District 6040-November Connection NewsRotarians, November is Foundation month. The Rotary Foundation provides the financial support for almost everything that Rotarians do from a philanthropic standpoint. Our contributions to the Polio Plus fund are matched two to one by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and provide Rotary’s contribution to polio eradication efforts around the world. Our donations to the Annual Fund/Share provide the District monies we utilize as matching funds for District and Global grants. It supplies the dollars we use for our Group Study Exchange Teams. An effort that exposes us to other cultures and them to ours. And it provides the District scholarship(s) we offer to college students to support their studies abroad. Our Rotary Foundation has achieved the highest scores available on Charity Navigator, an organization that evaluates Charitable organizations in the United States. Four stars and 100 points on a scale of 100 is the maximum rating available. There is no better place for your charitable dollars. We have been honored this year in having our Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney assist us in our Foundation fund raising efforts by agreeing to be our keynote speaker at our 20th annual 2019 Rotary Foundation dinner at Arrowhead stadium. Our attendance, silent auction and auction ticket purchases help us provide the Rotary Foundation with the funds they need to help “Rotary connect the World”. Yours in Rotary Service. New Generations MonthRotarians, September is New Generations month. The future of Rotary in our communities begins by developing strong Interact and Rotaract clubs. Start raising Rotarians early and we are creating the next generation of Club members, Club leaders and District leaders. An opportunity to teach young people the importance of service in their lives and their communities. A chance to teach them that service not only improves the lives of the people they serve but also their lives as well. One profits most who serves best! A perfect month for your club to consider either creating an Interact Club or having a joint event with your existing Interact Club to strengthen the bond between your club and your Interact sponsor and students. Not all communities have a College in their community where they can create a College based Rotaract Club. If you do have a College or University nearby and there is no Rotaract there now reach out and find out what the rules are for starting a service club there. If you have a club member who is employed there see if they can help you find a friendly member to the faculty to work with. Community based Rotaract Clubs fit in almost anywhere. If you have young people in your community who need a service outlet you can provide it by creating a community based club. Young people who never went to College or have returned from college and are so busy in their careers that they can’t make weekly Rotary meetings are perfect targets for a Rotaract club. You are building the Rotary spirit in them so that when they are ready they can join your clubs and they already know a lot about Rotary. They also make good volunteers for your service and fundraising projects. It will never hurt to try. Give it a chance. Starting either one of these types of clubs or continuing to operate them will earn you a checkbox on the way to earning your Club a Rotary Citation. We have extremely competent District leaders to help you with those programs. Rotary District 6040 August ConnectionRotarians, August is Membership and Extensions month. A perfect month theme for us given that we have our Rotary Education & Action for Leadership event in the middle of the month, on August 17th in Chillicothe. Part of the event entails having our club Membership Chairs work with Zone and District trained facilitators to develop customized membership plans for their clubs. A perfect month for your club to consider an extension of itself like an Interact Club, a Community based Rotaract Club or a Satellite club. Rotary President Mark Maloney’s number one goal is for us to “Grow Rotary”. All of these Rotary International programs accomplish that goal and will help your club earn a Rotary Citation this year. We have extremely competent District leaders to help you with those programs. Contact PDG Julie McCoy on membership efforts, PDG Jeff Romine for help starting an Interact Club and PDG Rick Simon for help with Community based or College based Rotaract clubs. I hope to see your Club Presidents, Presidents Elect, Foundation Chairs and Membership Chairs in Chillicothe on August 17th. If you have an interest in future Rotary leadership or are on the membership or foundation committee in your club you are welcome to attend as well. We are also pleased to announce that our District Peace and Conflict Resolution Ambassador, Stephen Youngblood will be addressing the Rotary World Peace conference in Ontario, California on January 17th and 18th, 2020. See the article on that event in this newsletter for more information if you are interested in attending. Yours in Rotary Service. Marc Horner District Governor |

DG Intro VideoI asked Kirby Asplund our D6040 Communications and Public Image Chair to put together this video to introduce our 2019-2020 Rotary year to our clubs. He did a great job considering the talent he had to work with. It is a on YouTube and it is just a little over 5 minutes long. It is concise and explains our Goals for this year. Please show it to your clubs at your next meeting. It will be months before I get to visit some of your clubs so we thought this is a new approach we would like to try to get the word out early. Please let me know the reaction you receive from your members. Good and Bad, I can handle it. |

Service Opportunity!Rotarians!!!! How would you like to open your house to a total stranger, 20 something college student, who is spending their summer counseling a camp for Special Needs kiddos...seems crazy I know. This next week, Liberty United Methodist hosts a camp called Champions Ministry Camp. This camp provides a summer camp experience for kids with all levels of special needs. It is an awesome experience...I have a nephew who participated last year. This is run by college age counselors that travel the country hosting this camp throughout the summer. Those leaders need a place to sleep and eat breakfast next week. If you have a spare room and are open to having your horizons opened by some amazing young adults...this is the opportunity for you. Let me know and I will hook you up!!! Kyle |

Farewell Julie McCoy=PDGTo all District 6040 Rotarians, So long farewell, auf weidersehen goodbye… Picture me singing one of my favorite ”Sound Of Music” songs as I fleet, I float, I fleetly flee I fly... Wow, I can’t believe that this Rotary Year is over…and I have all of you to THANK for making this year one of the most memorable years of my life! District 6040, you are simply THE BEST! Club Presidents “ROCK” and since I’m an accountant and I like numbers: -Every single Rotary Club in our district gave money to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund and/or the Polio Plus campaign this year…this is ABSOLUTELYL AMAZING! -25 Clubs gave over $100 in per capita giving to The Rotary Foundation. In fact, 4 Clubs were over $200 in per capita giving and 4 Clubs were over $300! NICELY DONE! -As of this writing, our districts total annual fund giving is at $132.20 in per capita giving to the Rotary Foundation…that is awesome. Outside of the centennial year, this is the highest per capita amount ever achieved in our district. That moves us up to second in the zone. -The total given as a District to the Annual Fund weas $312,661 (our goal was $236,000), $92,150 to Polio Plus and $18,750 to the Endowment…drum roll please….a total of $423,600 was given to do good in the world….a RECORD BREAKING YEAR! -23 Clubs achieved the Rotary Citation-WOW! There were 3 items Clubs could do to qualify for honors of distinction. Achieving the first level or Silver status were 4 clubs, achieving the second or Gold level status were 12 clubs and 5 clubs achieved that high honor in level 3 of being a Platinum Club…CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!? -28 Clubs applied for a District Grant, and 28 clubs received a District Grant. Grants awarded amounted to $51,300. Clubs matched this with $70,270. So, almost $121,600 was spent on community service projects right here in North Missouri. We did a lot of great and wonderful things for our communities. -2019 Shoes For Orphans Soul Roll Call noted: Over 19,000 pairs of shoes were donated to children everywhere (led by the Richmond Rotary Club with 3,116 pairs of shoes donated, which is an all-time high for any club in any year), 3,744 pairs of socks, 1,578 pairs of shoelaces and $12,772 in cash donations…FANTASTIC! -Lastly, my home club of Chillicothe became a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club…nicely done Chillicothe Rotary. This makes me very PROUD. Some of my favorite moments: -I had my very own song sung to me at Independent Rotary, “Old McCoy Had A Farm“. -Schuyler County Rotary discovered I am not a morning person and moved their 6:30 AM meeting to 6:30 PM. Wasn’t that sweet? -Maryville’s longtime member, Bill Adams, offered me a kiss when I attended their meeting. It was a Hersey’s kiss… Did he know I love chocolate?!? Later I even played his favorite song on the piano, "Home on the Range". -Maryville also celebrated their 90th Anniversary and Scotland County their 40th, what a great year to celebrate good things happening in Rotary. -And look out because Chillicothe Rotary will celebrate 100 years of service this coming year. Look for a heck of a party on April 4, 2020! To all my Club Presidents, District Officers, Committee Chairs, Committee members and District 6040 Rotarians, congratulations and thank you for your tireless efforts and your great work on behalf of Rotary. So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye. I leave and heave a sigh and say Goodbye...as I wish my good friend and Rotary Colleague, Marc Horner, well on his journey as your District Governor during 2019-2020 on the Greatest Show on Earth as Rotary Connects the World! YOU ARE ALL MY INSPIRATION! Julie McCoy District Governor 2018-19 |

Rotary People in ActionDear Rotarians of District 6040, My name is Marc Horner and I have been a member of the Kansas City, Missouri Rotary Club #13 for the last 25 years. My wife Barbara and I have two wonderful daughters, a fabulous son in law, one granddaughter and two Grand Dogs. We are lucky to have all of them living close by and my favorite evening consists of everyone being together for dinner. I am pleased to serve with a District Governor lineup consisting of Past District Governor Julie McCoy, DG Elect Don Gladhart, DG Nominee and fellow Club 13 member David McCaughey and DG Nominee Designate Kent Shelman. District 6040 has a rich history in Rotary International with three Past Rotary International Presidents as well as hosting two International Conventions. We are people of action in Northern Missouri. I look forward to working with my team of Assistant Governors, District officers and Club Presidents to make the 2019-2020 Rotary year one that will be transforming for all of our Rotarians. We have reasonable goals in both the Rotary citation and District goals to help us grow Rotary in District 6040. Our membership activities are focused on increasing the attractiveness of our clubs to new members as well as working to increase the engagement for our existing Rotarians. Our “Chinnery Challenge” polio activities are focused on reminding our clubs and our communities that although we are “this close” to ending the scourge of polio worldwide until it is gone forever it threatens to come back to the Americas just like the current measles epidemic. Rotary International President Mark Maloney has given us a wonderful theme for this Rotary year; Rotary Connects the World. He challenges us to grow Rotary in numbers and impact this year. Our new strategic plan is in place and supports our Rotary Vision. “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.” I look forward to working with all of you this Rotary year. Rotary is “The Greatest Show on Earth” |

Rotary D6040 District Grants - Kimbrough ChallengeDear Rotarian, Congratulations on Your District Grant/Kimbrough Challenge Award As you’re quite aware, this is a very special year in the life of the District. With the help of some very generous donations – including a leading bequest from the estate of Ed and Margaret Kimbrough, we have the opportunity to do some incredible things in our communities, District 6040, and around the world. But we can take this opportunity to another level entirely, by leveraging the amazing grant projects on which you’ll be working into a new level of awareness and visibility in our communities and in the District. You can play an easy – but major – role in this effort. Please help us tell the story! |

Venter's Surprise!!I have been trying to rack my brains for a way to honor Jerry and Cassy Venters at the District Assembly on Saturday, April 27th at the Cameron YMCA. Both have had key leadership roles in our district and are retiring from those positions this year. They aren't leaving Rotary or District 6040, just wanting to travel more and complete a few items off their bucket list. PDG Cassy has most recently been our District Foundation Chair and has handled so many things so well in our district. Her duties included Group Study Exchange, District and Global Grants, District and Global Scholarship, The Foundation Dinner, Annual Fund Giving and many, many more things too numerous to name here. PDG Jerry begin our Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) program five years ago and has been the chair for all of those five years. He also started the Pars for Polio (now Play for Polio) five years ago and has just given up that job in the last year. But, these are two very successful programs that have benefited our district a great deal. So, then it came to me...they both love the Polio Plus campaign. Jerry had polio as a child and they have been very supportive of this program over the years. So, I thought it would be a nice honor...if you choose (or your club)...to make a donation in their name to polio. You can do that for as little as $25 at Rotary.org/give . Click on the RED DONATE button and it will walk you through the steps to give. Please select yes to make the donation in honor of someone and include Jerry and Cassy Venters as the name of the honoree. Also, click on yes, that you would like to notify someone of this dedication and put my email in that space as jmmccoy17@gmail.com. The gift amount will remain anonymous and you can preview all your entries before hitting the submit button. However, I would love to know the dollar amount given so I can tally the results...and promise to keep that confidential as well. But, I will understand if you choose to keep this to yourself. I plan to give the Jerry and Cassy a card with all the donors names in it at the assembly on April 27th to express our appreciation of their service to our District. I have also attached the Rotary Foundation Contribution Form if that is an easier way for you to give. Please just check the Polio Plus box in section 2. And remember to let me know that you have sent a gift in their honor at jmmccoy17@gmail.com. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need any help or have any questions. Lastly, remember that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches each donation 2-1. So, for every dollar donated, it becomes $3. I think this is the perfect way to honor Jerry and Cassy. The Polio eradication efforts have been our signature Rotary project since 1985 and is very near and dear to the Venters hearts. Thank you in advance for considering this request |

Rotary Giving-Flood ReliefDear District 6040 Rotarians, As you know, significant flooding is wreaking havoc in Nebraska and Missouri and the damage is significant. Rotarians are by nature very generous and always interested in helping with the relief efforts, especially when they strike so close to home. I have been in close contact with Past District Governor, John Gill. He has been leading the efforts to sandbag levees along the Missouri River. He was confident that he would have a good turnout today to help our local farmers...thanks John! I understand that the Braymer FFA chapter was even in route to help in the efforts. John, DGE Marc Horner, District Treasurer Carl Froeschle, and I all sit on the District 6040 Donor Advisory Fund Advisory Council. After talking with each other, we feel that the best ways to help with flood relief are as follows: For emergency services needed now-please contribute to the American Red Cross and denote "Missouri or Nebraska Flooding" in the memo line. Addresses are as follows: -Missouri Regional Headquarters, 10195 Corporate Square, Creve Coeur, MO 63132. -Omaha/Council Bluff Metro Regional Office, 2912 S. 80th Ave, Omaha, NE 68124. The American Red Cross website also has a red donate button on the home page that allows you to contribute to the local chapters. For Flood Recovery, Levee Rebuilding, and Infrastructure Repair, please contribute to the District 6040 Donor Advisory Fund. Checks must be made out to "The Rotary Foundation DAF". On the memo line of the check include District 6040 DAF. Please also send a note with the check that it is intended for "Missouri Flooding and Disaster Relief ". Donations should be mailed to the District Treasurer, Carl Froeschle, 1201 S.W. Coachlight Drive, Lee's Summit, MO 64081. Thanks in advance for your consideration and any assistance you feel compelled to contribute. Water is so damaging and I am sure the relief efforts will take many months or more to repair and return their communities to normal. As always, many thought and prayers are needed for those living in the disaster areas. Yours in Rotary Service, Julie |

Rotary - Giving Abroad Pt 2-MalawiDear District 6040 Rotarians, Please see the notice below from our partners at ShelterBox with regard to the devastation caused by the cyclone in Africa. Some of our District 6040 Clubs have had strong ties to these countries. In fact, we have done some global grants in these countries in recent years. We are also considering a Group Study Exchange with District 9210 in the next Rotary year. So many friendships have been cultivated and our friends are in need. From ShelterBox: Our team is in Malawi working to support families after Cyclone Idai devastated parts of Southern African countries of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The crisis is getting worse. It’s still raining, and floodwaters will continue to rise for at least a week. Authorities are also concerned about possible Cholera outbreaks from dirty water. ShelterBox is ready to support families with emergency shelter and other essential items. There are tens of thousands of families with nowhere to call home – with your support, we can help more people. We expect support may include emergency ShelterKits so families can repair or create shelter, as well as water filters and mosquito nets so families can protect themselves from diseases. Right now, we are talking to local partners in all the countries affected to understand how we can help. As Rotary International’s project partner for disaster relief, we’re in close contact with the District Governor for Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. We're also in contact with Habitat for Humanity, who are talking to affected families in Malawi. Rotary partnership in action: Our team will be meeting with the District Governor (Hutch Mthinda) to discuss plans. Rotary District 9210 is the most affected, covering Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. District Governor Hutchson Mthinda is in close contact with ShelterBox and has been providing local updates. We have been closely monitoring the impact of the flooding and cyclone across the whole region, which has also affected Rotary District 9400, which covers some of South Africa, Botswana and, crucially, Maputo in southern Mozambique. Visit www.shelterboxusa.org/ Thank you again for your consideration to our friends in need, Julie McCoy District 6040 District Governor 2018-19 |

Rotary Opp to give-Home & AbroadDear District 6040 Rotarians, As always, the minute I hit the "send" button, I remember or hear of more wonderful ways to give money to help in disaster relief. The Salvation Army is always a worthwhile charity. The money goes directly to helping those in need and you can even direct it to specific towns if you desire. They have been in several communities in the NW part of our District feeding and helping since last Tuesday. I have seen pleas for food and donations from the Second Harvest Community Food Bank in St. Joe. Their website is https://www.shcfb.org and they have a green DONATE button available on the home page. Our friends and neighbors at Heart to Heart International have been responding to both the floods along the Missouri River (taking supplies to Mound City) and hurricane Idai (with their partner, Save the Children.) They are sending an assessment team to determine the possibility of placing a volunteer medical relief team into one of the countries and awaiting a determination by the W.H.O. as to clearance to bring in medical practitioners in those countries. District 6040 District Assembly 27 Apr 2019I was reminded last week that we only have 100 days left in this Rotary year! What? Where did the time go? I feel like I’m just getting started; and, in reality, I only have one major event left on the books! This event just happens to be one of my favorite District 6040 happenings. The District Assembly will be held at the Cameron YMCA in Cameron Missouri on April 27th. The link to sign up and details of the day are as follows: I love the District Assembly for many reasons and have attached the days agenda. My passion in life has always been kids and literacy. On this day, we will honor two winners of the Teacher of the Year Awards by presenting two lucky teachers with a check for $1,000 each! We will also be privileged to hear the three finalist of the District’s 4-Way Speech Contest. These finalist will receive $1,000 for first place, $500 for second and $250 for third. I am always amazed by the talented young people we have in our district. Our outbound Group Study Exchange team has now been in Australia for a little over two weeks. Please check out the Facebook pages to see their exciting adventures. The inbound team will arrive this Saturday. Feel free to come and greet our team at either American Airlines at 3:23 p.m. on March 30th as they arrive or join us at the Embassy Suites by the airport around 4:00 for a celebratory toast and official welcome to District 6040. I look forward to seeing the Australian team around our district during the month of April. If you don’t get a chance to see them in your community, please join us at the District Assembly where you can see both teams make a presentation. The annual Shoes for Orphans Soul drive is now underway and the caravan schedule has been prepared and is attached. Our very own Larry Lunsford will be on hand to end the day with his annual Shoes for Orphans Soul Roll Call of clubs. It is always amazing to see the generosity and love clubs have for this District Project! You won’t want to miss this day. It is FREE and we FEED you lunch! What could be better than that! The day is very casual and jeans are suggested. Be comfortable and come out and join us for an exciting day of Rotary Fun! Please sign up on the following link so we can make sure we have plenty of food and drink on hand for the REAL MCCOY’S last hurrah. I look forward to seeing you there, Julie McCoy District Governor 2018-19 660-752-3128 |

District Membership Drive-updateWell we are entering the last quarter or the home stretch of the race to increase membership across the district. We made a friendly competition this year to raise awareness to the importance of membership to each and every club and to Rotary worldwide. Helen Keller's quote captures it all "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." The competition is a cash reward of $1250 for 3 clubs, one reward in each category of club size small, medium and large with largest percentage growth for the district year. As of July 1, 2018, clubs with less than 24 where considered small, clubs from 24-45 were medium and clubs greater than 45 were large. Also, for member who sponsored the most new members would get a highly coveted district 6040 Each One Reach One Jacket in the same three categories. If the drive ended today here are the clubs and Rotarians in the lead Clubs with highest growth percentage wise: Small: Unionville Medium: Parkville, (Marceline would pass them with 1 new member) Large: Independence Rotarians with most sponsored new members: small: no one with more than 1 sponsor, will have to figure out a tie breaker medium: Don Kirkapile - Trenton, Jodi Krantz - Eastern Independence and Martial Thevenot - St Joe Southside large: Carl Chinnery - Lees Summit, Jodi Sundaram - Liberty and Randall Smith - Kirksville looking at the percentages the drive contest is fluid, a club could add 1 or 2 members and leap frog the leader. Also a club in the lead could lose a current member. so it is about attraction and retention. There is still time to make a difference in your club, Rotary and most importantly change the life of someone by introducing them to Rotary a life long family of friends and service. More at PETS and future updates as we get closer to end of year. p.s. All clubs are asked to have membership facilitation with a trained district Rotarian on attraction and engagement strategies. If you don't know what your club strategy is please discuss with your president or membership chair. These are designed to help clubs develop a membership growth plan. RLI Coming Soon - Time to Register!Leadership skills are yours for the taking this spring in District 6040! District 6040’s Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) offers a unique opportunity for District Rotarians to complete the three-day course in just five weeks in March and April. The series will begin in Chillicothe on Saturday, March 9, when all three Parts of the course will be available. Those sessions will begin with a light breakfast at 8 a.m. and will conclude by 3:30 p.m. Rotarians are high achievers, but it is not possible to take more than one Part in a single day because each Part is a full-day course! The registration deadline for all three Parts is Tuesday, March 5. Then, for the first time ever, two evening courses will be held in the Kansas City metro. On March 19 and 27, Part II of the RLI course will be offered for those who have completed Part I. These sessions will begin at 5:30 p.m. and end at about 8:45 p.m. at the Woodneath branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library, 8900 NE Flintrock Road, Kansas City 64157. On April 10 and 15, Part III of the course will be offered at these same hours at the Woodneath library branch. There’ll be pizza and salad each evening and two or three classes of about one hour each. Participants must attend both nights to complete each Part. The fee to attend each Part of RLI is $50. Members’ clubs often pay that fee. Registration is now open on the HOA-RLI Website, www.hoa-rli.org Questions? Contact District Coordinator Jerry Venters, 816-665-9272 or jvrotary6040@yahoo.com. |

Easy Rotary Money (2019)We wanted to be sure that all Rotarians knew about the exciting opportunity to MAKE some $$$$ and enrich the lives of others. I know, is this another gimmick, or what? wait, please read on. Seriously, this will be your clubs easiest and most rewarding way to make $1,250 dollars this year. How does it work? All your club has to do is grow your membership by the largest percent with like size clubs. The club size categories are below. We are basing growth off of July 1, 2018 numbers. Small clubs are <23 members Medium clubs are 24-45 members Large Clubs are >45 members As a quick shoutout, the following clubs in each of the categories are off to a great start Small: Andrew County and Marceline Medium: Parkville, Schuyler and Trenton Large: Blue Springs, Independence and Waldo Brookside Another fun incentive is that in the same 3 categories the top Rotarian sponsors of new members this year will receive a cool D6040 Member jacket. I love it and wear mine all the time. see the attached. So you might be asking yourself what now? So, here is what my challenge to each of you is:
The 3 winners will have $1,250 no strings attached to use as they wish. This is easy as sharing something that you love with others. Lets make this happen. Inspiration is the key, Inspire others to do good alongside you. Frank Dixon District 6040 Membership Chair |

Giving Tuesday - 11/27/18#GivingTuesday is a global giving movement that has been built by individuals, families, organizations, businesses and communities in countries around the world. Millions of people have come together to support and champion the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live. We have two days for getting deals – Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On #GivingTuesday, we have a day for giving back. Together, people are creating a new ritual for our annual calendar. #GivingTuesday is the opening day of the giving season. You can start the holiday season on a charitable note by donating on Giving Tuesday, November 27th. Why should Rotary be your charity of choice? Because our 1.2 million members see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Here are six reasons to donate to Rotary. We fight disease around the world For decades, Rotary has been a leader in the battle against polio and has kept the pressure on as worldwide cases plummeted from 350,000 in 1988 to only 20 cases so far this year. We’re closer than ever to ending this devastating disease. Your impact will be even greater, thanks to a 2-to-1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. All donations (up to $50 million) to end polio will be tripled, providing critical funding to our work to create a polio-free world. We teach people to read Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults through mentoring, scholarships, teacher training, and access to learning opportunities. We build peace Each year, armed conflict and persecution displace, injure, or kill millions of people. More than 90 percent of them are civilians, and half are children. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. Our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources. We provide clean water, sanitation The statistics are alarming. Worldwide, one person in every 10 does not have access to safe water, and 2.3 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation. One consequence: 900 children under age five die each day from diarrheal diseases. Having clean water and sanitation is a human right. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives. Rotary is helping to make clean water available to everyone by 2030. We grow local economies Nearly 800 million people live on less than $1.90 a day. Rotary is working to strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders. We know that one solution doesn’t fit every problem, so we work with people to help them help themselves. We help Tanzanians with albinism find safe, healthy livelihoods. In Ecuador, Rotary has made 250 microloans and trained more than 270 people in job skills and business management. In Arkansas, USA, we worked with Heifer International to extend the growing season for farmers and help them find new customers. We save mothers and children An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation. More than 800 women die every day from birth- and pregnancy-related complications. Rotary is saving lives by supplying birthing kits, immunizations, neonatal care equipment, and medical training. With access to quality care, mothers and children live longer and healthier lives, and Rotary is providing that care. Start a new tradition for your annual calendar. On Tuesday, November 27 please visit http://Rotary.org/donate to make your gift. District Conf & Foundation Dinner 2018You may be aware that two very important events are coming up next month in the life of the District: the District 6040 Conference, and the annual Foundation Dinner are both taking place on Friday, October 26th. These are events that will both inform and inspire - and help to raise funds that will allow us to continue to make an impact here in northern Missouri and around the world. What's New for the Foundation Dinner 2018? D6040 Rotarians asked and the Foundation Dinner planning team responded....
Cassy Venters District Rotary Foundation Chair In the coming month, a lot of information will be available, providing details of the events. While it's important for you to see the information, we obviously don't want to fill your inbox! (There will be a few occasions when information is sent via email - but we want to keep this to a minimum - as I'm sure you do.) Please help us with this: frequent posts are planned for the district's Facebook page, which will keep you informed and in-the-know as the event approaches. If you have not yet done so, please go to Facebook and "Like" the District 6040 Facebook page to stay connected. Also - Bob Merrigan and David McCaughey have done a great service by creating the new District 6040 Website- it also contains a wealth of information about the District Conference and the Foundation Dinner - and will be updated as needed to keep you informed and get you registered. Please check back frequently. Thank you for your help in keeping information flowing in the District. We look forward to seeing you at the District Conference and Foundation Dinner. Know a good dentist? To all District 6040 Rotarians, Do you know a good dentist? I was asked this question six years ago by Dr. Bob McGee of North Kansas City Rotary. When I told him I was related to six, I think he almost fainted. But, this question and a subsequent discussion lead to a medical and dental mission trip to Jamaica for my husband and myself. There we treat the Jamaican people with their medical and dental needs. I'll have to say that it is the most rewarding week of my year. Vocational Service is one of Rotary’s Five Avenues of Service. Vocational Service calls every Rotarian to contribute their vocational talents to the problems and needs of society. However I find that the area of vocational service is the hardest to achieve. Well guess what? Today, I have been approached by two different Rotarians with an opportunity for vocational service...at home and abroad. First at home: The Missouri Dental Association will have a free dental clinic in Kirksville, MO, the first weekend in August (3rd & 4th). The Missouri Mission of Mercy will be held in the Pershing Arena on the Truman Campus located at 1300 S. Franklin. Rotary clubs in the 16 NE counties of Missouri have been most supportive of this initiative. I understand that this group is in dire need of dentists to serve this weekend. Anyone over the age of 5 will be treated with x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions. MOMOM.org has more information. Online registration has closed; but you can register on site. If you need more information, please contact Paul Roberts at paul@modentalmail.org or 573-291-3285 or you can contact Elsie Gaber from the Kirksville Thousand Hills Rotary Club at egaber5252@gmail.com or 660-349-9224. Now abroad: That Jamaican trip that I love to go on each year is also in need of dentists. This years trip is February 9-18 and we travel the remote areas of this country offering cleanings, fillings and extractions. If you would like more information on this trip, please contact my dentist, Rolfe McCoy, at rolfe@msmdental.net or 660-752-3900. So, if you see your dentist this week and think they might have an interest in serving, please pass this message along. These are very inspiring opportunities. Yours in Rotary Service, Julie McCoy District Governor 2018-19 |

I am going and I couldn't be more excited. I have been asked this question: Isn't it going to be beastly HOT in Guatemala in July! And the answer is "NO". It is actually quite nice to go in July as the temperatures are between 50-60 degrees. It is like our fall. So, it will be cool and very beautiful. All the information is attached. I will be joined by our very own Larry Lunsford and I understand that this is a trip of a lifetime. So, please sign up soon as the deadline is in two weeks. District 6040 Budget 2018-2019Good Afternoon District 6040 Rotarians! Now that tax season is over, I have been working on the District budget for the 2018-2019 Rotary year. It is attached. A few items to note as you review the coming years budget: -This budget is very similar to prior year budgets. -We will continue to fund the same activities, events and projects as we have done in the past. -The dues clubs pay to Show Me Rotary will change slightly this year. In past years, clubs paid $130 for the Club President and $85 for the Club Secretary to attend Show Me Rotary President and Secretary training. This year you will see two officers billed at $110 each. Overall, this is an increase of $5 per club. -No district dues increase is proposed. -I wanted to create an emphasis in a few areas that I felt needed more attention at the District level. So, you will see more funds allocated to 3 areas: Membership, Website Enhancement, and Public Image/District Communication. This budget will be presented for approval at the District Assembly in Macon, MO on April 28, 2018. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this budget. I can be reached at jmmccoy17@gmail.com or 660-752-3128. Yours in Rotary Service, Julie McCoy District Governor 2018-2019 |

District 6040 Governor Selected - 2021-22 Rotary YearDear District 6040 Rotarians, David McCaughey, of the Rotary Club of Kansas City, has been selected to serve as the District Governor for District 6040 for the 2021-2022 Rotary year. David joined Rotary in 1999 and is currently serving as President of the Rotary Club of Kansas City Club 13. David has been active in his club and in our district. Since his induction into Rotary, David has chaired the Technology and Communications committee in his club. He has been responsible for technology at club meetings, website development, and overall technology needs of their club. He was selected by his club’s Board of Directors in 2012 as the Volunteer of the Year for his service to the club. David has also served in several capacities on the Board of the Rotary Youth Camp including his service as Board President in 2013-2015. He currently represents the District on the statewide Show Me Rotary Council that plans and conducts President-elect and Secretary training each year. David has served our District for the greater part of the last five years on the District Conference committee and other committees assisting in the planning and holding of various District events and dinners. David attended the Rotary Zone Institute in Springfield, Illinois in the Fall of 2017 and participated in the Emerging Leaders Training. He attended the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia in 2017 and was on a panel of speakers for a breakout session on Social Media Best Practices. He was also instrumental in the development and set up of a booth, which celebrated the Kansas City Club’s initial donation to The Rotary Foundation, in the Convention’s House of Friendship at the Convention. David’s interview for District Governor showed the depth of his commitment to his club, the District, and Rotary International. His understanding of important issues for clubs and districts and his abilities in planning, organizing and leading were clear to the interview committee. His passion for service and youth are well aligned with Rotary’s mission. In District 6040, District Governors begin involvement with the Executive Council and the District immediately on selection. That involvement builds through the years until they serve as District Governor. We are looking forward to David’s leadership, involvement and input into decisions and directions related to our District and Rotary. David McCaughey joins Allen Garner, Independence, DG 2017-18; Julie McCoy, Chillicothe, DG 2018-19; Marc Horner, Kansas City Club 13, DG 2019-20; and Don Gladhart, St. Joseph Club, 2020-21, in the District Governor line-up. Giving Tuesday - The Rotary Foundation (11/28/17)Dear District 6040 Rotarians - Please join your Rotary Foundation leaders in the spirit of the holiday season and contribute to The Rotary Foundation on Giving Tuesday - November 28. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving - Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. It’s a simple idea. Whether you come together with your family, your community, your company or your organization, find a way to give back and then share your idea. Liberty Rotary Club President, Frank Dixon, suggested we share the Rotary Foundation Contribution form with all Rotarians. He said, "make it easy for people to give and they'll do it". However you celebrate giving this season, we hope you find this time of year filled with the giving spirit and that we all share that with the people around us and far away. Texas Hurricane Harvey - Disaster ReliefFrom District Governor - Allen GarnerMany of the Rotarians in the District have expressed a desire to assist those in need because of the devastation from Hurricane Harvey and the resultant torrential rainfall leading to historic flooding. The willingness to help is accompanied by a desire to be effective stewards of resources. It appears at this stage of the disaster that the best way to assist the victims and communities affected by Hurricane Harvey and to address the biggest needs is through monetary donations. Those wanting to help are asking where to send funds. Set out below are three options for sending money to assist. |

District 6040 Insider (Headlines) - April-May 2017DISTRICT GOVERNOR CORNER Wow!!! (And that’s putting it mildly.) The Rotarians in District 6040 have been doing amazing things the last couple of months. We are always busy and doing many, many good things in our communities and in the world, but we have really kicked it up these last few months. Read stories in this newsletter about the fabulous results you produced in collecting shoes for orphans in Guatemala and Kenya. Read all about how the generous Rotarians of District 6040 surpassed a goal set to commemorate The Rotary Foundation’s 100th Anniversary and will now be able to do even much, much more good in the world. It has also been our great pleasure to host Rotary Ambassadors (Group Study Exchange) from Argentina/Paraguay this last month throughout our District. They were a joy to get to know and we have formed some amazing friendships and partnerships for projects. Thank you for all you do, District 6040 Rotarians!!! - Kim |

Funny thought & Things that make you go "Hmmm" (KW#1)Funny Story - I rarely watch a lot of TV outside of the Royals and an occasional "This Old House" episode if I happen to accidentally find one on, but the other night I happened to be in a couch potato frame of mind and found myself gazing into my "idiot box" as my dad used to refer to it. Like most fast paced Americans...I couldn't possibly sit still through a commercial so I found myself flipping channels...now before you totally relate to my story...do remember that my TV consists of rabbit ears and the hopes of finding one more version of a channel that I already have...I am up to 4 Public Television stations...19-1...19-2...well you get the point. Serious Fun_2017President-elect Ian Riseley on attracting new members, building strong clubs, and forming friendships that lastIan H.S. Riseley gets up from his desk, and he is tall. He has white hair, a firm handshake, and no tie. Early on, you sense that he likes the sort of energetic exchange that can swerve from serious to lighthearted, which makes him very good company. He exudes competence – which makes him seem like the right person to advise you on vexing tax issues. That’s good, because it’s what he has done for the last 40 years.

Define your Rotary LegacyFrom the desk of Kim LeSage- District Governor 6040
The commitment to Service Above Self is what defines us as Rotarians, and the Rotary Foundation is one of the main vehicles we use to serve others and make the world a better place. Here’s your opportunity to define your Rotary legacy and support the Rotary Foundation for its 100th anniversary.
District Governor Kim LeSage and District Rotary Foundation Chair Cassy Venters invite you to participate in the Rotary District 6040 Centennial Legacy Campaign to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Rotary Foundation. The Campaign goal is to raise $2,650,000 for The Rotary Foundation by April 10, 2017. Commitments to date total nearly $1,500,000.
Contributors who make a minimum commitment of $10,000 in cash, Rotary Direct pledges, or a bequest will be invited to attend the Centennial Legacy Dinner, to be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017. Rotary International President John Germ will be the keynote speaker.
Contact Centennial Legacy Dinner Campaign Steering Committee Chair Larry Lunsford for more information and to make a donation. Larry is a Past Rotary International Director, and you can reach him at larrylunsford@b-r.com or 816-756-0640.
Thank you for your support of the Rotary Foundation and 100 years of "doing good in the world"!
All my best,
Kim

Notable Rotarians 01/03/17While pondering the updates to this fine periodical (?) and TRYING to keep up with the ECR Newsletter Pioneer-Larry Wepler I wondered if any of our past presidents were Rotarians.
So a quick Google Search (no, I didn't ask SIRI or ALEXA) I found a few articles that answered my question. Take a look below of just a shortened compilation of past notable Rotarians.
