Rotary Dist 6040 December Connection

December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month.  Our most important and obvious Disease Prevention program is our organizations' commitment to eradicating Polio everywhere in the World.  Our District’s role in that area of service this year is focused on our Chinnery Challenge.  My request that all of our clubs participate in some kind of Polio awareness and fundraising effort during this Rotary year. But we have other very important disease prevention projects we are participating in as well.
 
One of our Districts other efforts in disease prevention involves our investment, along with many other districts in the Nigerian Family Health Days project.  Over 140,000 people were screened at 152 different sites for a variety of diseases, received treatment when available and at the very least were directed to providers of the various services they required.  This is a huge endeavor in Nigeria and would not be possible without District 6040 through the Liberty, Missouri Rotary Club acting as the Sponsor for this project.
Obviously our many water and sanitation projects directly contribute towards disease prevention but I will deal with those in another month’s newsletter.

And now, how about our own phenomenal Disease Prevention project.  Shoes for Orphan Souls.  Yes, it is a disease prevention project.  Shoes protect against disease and infection. In many developing countries, children walk barefoot in muddy, rocky terrain to gather clean water or go to school. Parasites and diseases, including hookworm, jiggers and tetanus, can enter the body through cuts in the feet. These illnesses can stunt a child’s growth and development, as well as cause lifelong mental damage.
 
The shoes we collect this year will be going to the Dominican Republic; the country we will be sending our Group Study Exchange team to this January and whose team we hosted in October and early November.

Congratulations to the Eastern Independence Rotary Club who were the winners of the Ray Klinginsmith Cup for donations to the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Odessa held a Charter Banquet Thursday, November 14 for the Interact Club of Odessa High School. The club has 30 charter members, most of whom attended the banquet with their families. Guest speakers included Marc Horner, 6040 district governor, Dr. Jon Oetinger, superintendent of Odessa R-7 Schools, and Adam Couch, Odessa mayor. Interactors participated in a pinning ceremony and were presented with the club's charter. Club advisors were also pinned, and faculty advisors were announced as honorary Rotarians.

2020 Rotary Coach Tour of New Zealand
 
Rotary members are invited to join the 2020 Rotary Coach Tour of New Zealand with the Rotary Club of Pakuranga September 11-28, 2020.  The tour includes two meals in Rotarians homes and two Rotary meeting visits.  The tour is limited to 26 people and accommodations will be 4 to 5 star and include breakfast.  Your tour will include two night stays in all big city stopovers and a professional tour guide throughout the entire trip.
