Mary Kay wrote the lion's share of the grant and President Patti completed and submitted it by the deadline. The project cost is$2783.32. The District is poised to match our contribution of $1391.66 to complete this project. *Grant monies are funded through OUR OWN contributions to the Rotary Foundation. A percentage is returned to the District after a 3 year lag. Our club has not accessed these funds in years and is positioned and energized now to make this an annual initiative. Meeting Minutes and Details for July 18, 2017 Mary Kay Worth 2017-07-20 04:00:00Z 0
The role and duties of the secretary of each club is critical. Typically, one person has been filling this responsibility. It is time, though, to consider breaking the responsibilities into smaller, more manageable duties. Members are asked to consider and step up and speak up. Needs include:
  • Weekly attendance/record keeping at the noon meeting. This includes notes for makeups and collecting fines for missed meetings.
  • Assisting the treasurer with the 50/50 raffle tickets at the noon meeting.
  • Taking meeting minutes. A Minute Minder form is available and a useful tool.
  • Putting minutes into the Clubrunner Bulletin and publishing. Requires training.
  • Monthly entering attendance into Clubrunner. Requires training.
  • Attending monthly board of directors meeting
  • Take board of director minutes and prepare, present for approval at the next meeting, and archive in Clubrunner. (Later requires training.)
  • Annually prepare and distribute dues statements for members. (It was done successfully this year electronically through Clubrunner.)
  • Ordering new member badges.
  • Ordering other club supplies as requested by the president.
  • Scanning correspondence and archiving in Clubrunner. Requires training.

REMINDER : DECEMBER 6 NOON MEETING @ CUTCO 2016-11-30 00:00:00Z 0
Using the electronic option afforded by our Olean Rotary Club By-laws, the Board of Directors has approved the membership applications of Patricia Gulac (sponsored by Jim Gulnac - note correction from previous edition) and Rin Wada (sponsored by Barb Lias). This notice serves to inform the club. Any member who has a question or concern about these individuals has 7 days to voice concern to our President, also per our By-laws.

Barb will likely plan a brief induction ceremony on December 6 at our special noon meeting location at Cutco. Approving the slate of officers for 2017-18 will also be on the agenda. This is an important detail as the club needs to submit a Memorandum of Understanding the District 7090 officials by December 15 to ensure our club eligibility for grant monies in the 2017 grant cycle. Mary Kay and Risa attended the mandatory training for our club's two-member training participants.

>President Barb asked for guest introductions. Tony introduced Al Berstein, new member candidate. Mary Kay introduced Theresa Shaffer, new member candidate. Dan McDowell introduced our guest speaker, Zach Rodrigues.

>2016 Club photo taken today right after our guest speaker (see separate story and picture). One was taken with current members and one with the two interested in membership!

>Elena thanked all for the smoothness of the MUM SALE from beginning to end. Tony came up with 66 more than the original 260ish that she reported. A report on the profits is forthcoming.

>Carl routed a sign-up sheet for PASTA DINNER PREP on Sunday, Nov 6. He was happy that more people have already signed up than last year! (I note that new member candidate Theresa Shaffer signed up too!) Oct.4 will be our Club Assembly to stuff envelopes that generate our business sponsors. (That's where we make our financial goals!) Barb will be away & Carl will lead the meeting.

>Martina update (our Youth Exchange Student from Italy) ~ MK thanked Kim & Doug for transportation to & from inbound orientation last weekend. A ride home for her will be needed  from the District Conference in Batavia on Sunday, Oct. 23. See MK if you are willing/able to help. She is joining INTERACT at Walsh.

>Barb noted club member(s) are needed to go to the second 2017 GRANT training seminar in Canada on Nov. 19. (MK notes that two people expressed interest after the meeting.)

>MK suggested that, once the club qualifies, we get a local matching grant project going. District 7090 will match up to $2000 for approved applications due in January 2017.  MK has emailed GENESIS HOUSE, OLEAN FOOD PANTRY, WARMING HOUSE, and all 3 schools that host INTERACT CLUBS (OHS, ALCS, Walsh). Members agreed & were informed in person & via special email to suggest others. (MK notes that the OLEAN FOOD PANTRY is preparing a request.)

>Our SBU ROTARACT club signed up 50 interested in the campus club fair. 25 showed up for the first meeting! Whoo-hoo! Kim bought pizza. (Thank you!) MK and Martina were there. What we envisioned/hoped would happen has started to happen. Some students new to campus came because they were INTERACT members in high school and wanted to continue in ROTARY SERVICE ABOVE SELF! Several expressed interest in going to the conference.

>MK gave wooden nickles to those planning to attend for all or part of the District 7090 conference. Lots of service opportunities, including.....

>ROTARACT Senior Luis Carpio will ride for AREA 15 (ELLICOTTVILLE, OLEAN, SALAMANCA) at the POLIO PLUS BIKE-A-THON on Saturday, Oct 22. Dave made a motion. Sandy second. Approved. MK will give individuals an opportunity to donate on a pledge sheet AND the club will make a donation. (I missed the amount and will suggest $100 or more.)

>Jody had recently brought a suggestion forward to consider a SILENT POLICEMAN for a signature project in the recent WALKABLE OLEAN makeover of Union Street. MK has a friend, Isaiah, also known as the STONE CARVER. He recently landed a commission with Fredonia State to carve an 8 foot statue in front of the Science building. He gave a VERY PRELIMINARY estimate of $13,000 to carve a 6 foot SILENT POLICEMAN in bluestone. It would take approximately 4 months and 400 to 500 hours of work. The club agreed to have him present his skill and ideas soon. MK will contact. Honorary member Jerry noted that we needed a plan to take to the city. Tom Windus & the architects should be involved. Al Bernstein, county clerk attending today, noted a possible location that would not be in the center of one of the round-abouts. I noted that Isaiah had expressed interest in carving on site.

>President Barb asked if any progress had been made in the processing of replacing our president elect. There was nothing to report.

"Have you ever wanted to be a part of a Rotary project that was really something big?  A project that made an immediate impact in your local area..right now??  Well then, mark your calendar and make sure you are registered to attend the District Conference 2016.  Saturday afternoon, October 22, 2016, Rotarians will be working side by side, to package 50,000 meals in our first ever “hands on project” at a District Conference.  This is an opportunity for you to have fun and fellowship while “doing good in the world”. Your Club can take advantage of this amazing opportunity at the District Conference by making a donation to this worthwhile event.  In exchange, you will receive the equivalent meal packages which can then be given to a local food bank or church pantry in your own hometown!  The cost of one meal is $.25.  A $500 donation would get you 2000 meals!! This is an excellent opportunity to expose new members to the work that Rotary does.  It’s also a great way to engage as a club, on a project with an immediate impact!"

Olean Rotarians welcomed Sue McAley & Candy Plant to our noon meeting today. They are heading up the annual $400,000 giving campaign that directly benefits Cattaraugus County. Their annual campaign ends December 31, 2016. They have 3 fund raisers during the year that help towards achieving the annual goal. The Olean Wholesale Golf Tournament recently netted over $20K, helped by the company matching the proceeds. Volunteers for events are WELCOMED and encouraged! United Way offers a free service called "Get Connected," part of their web site. We got a sneak preview of an initiative rolling out statewide specifically to sustainably empower the low income, working poor that compromise 68% of our county population. Candy said it has been nine years since she came to Rotary. We appreciated it!

At the regular noon meeting of the Olean Rotary Club held at the Bartlett Country Club on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, Rotary 7090 District Governor Jack Amico addressed the club and the Board of Directors.

Assistant Governor Kathy Burch introduced our distinguished guest, District 7090 Governor Jack Amico. In turn, Jack presented Kathy with gifts for her service, including a beautiful LIGHT UP ROTARY scarf! DG Jack gave a heart-felt presentation, noting his passion for ROTARY and his commitment to LIGHT UP ROTARY. He put in plugs for our club service and committed members. He also put in plugs for the October BUFFALO BASH with great speakers, including Joshua Covey (7 habits of highly successful people work of Steven Covey continue) & Joe Roberts (from skid row to CEO). DG Jack also emphasized the importance of FOUNDATION giving.

DG Jack challenged us all to wear our LIGHT UP ROTARY pin every day for a year. MK said members will have options to suggest a fine for other members at the next meeting who get caught without the LIGHT UP ROTARY pin!

Reports / Announcements

  1. VENUE CHANGE Beginning Tuesday, July 8 our weekly noon meeting will change to the Bartlett Country Club in Olean! Menus & ordering plans were distributed. It could be labor intensive as, although there will not be a weekly minimum, only one check will be taken for the whole club. This means our treasurer will have to figure out the individual bills and take individual payments. It will be important for members to help with the figures and try to have exact change. We will need to monitor this closely! MK asked for help detailing all the places where venue location & changes need to be made.
  2. PR/community service opportunity at Sunday, July 27 Taste of Olean/Art in the Park at the JCC Olean Campus from 11am-5pm. The club agreed to give away Rotary balloons and a sign-up sheet ready & the balloons are in. A plan to get helium will follow.
  3. MK thanked Doug Price for serving as the MINUTE MINDER for this meeting.
  4. Order ROTARY stuff – MK has LIGHT UP ROTARY pins. Kathy Burch left shirts in the podium. MK had the catalogue out & will send in an order in early August. GET YOUR ROTARY GARB! Be proud! LIGHT UP ROTARY!
  5. ROTARY SOCIAL EVENT Sunday, July 20, 6:30-8:30 Mary Kay’s patio, 84 Brooklyn St Portville. BYOB. Non-alcoholic beverages and snack will be provided. RSVP for planning purposes.

On February 19th, Senator Catherine Young was the guest speaker at the Olean Rotary Club.  There was a total of 54 people present to hear Senator Young speak on "Gaining and Sustaining Jobs in the Greater Olean area".  In addition, she did a question and answer with those in attendance after.  The Olean Rotary Club presented her with a framed picture of Bill Gates and a donation of $100 in her honor to Polio Plus.   Senator Young use to be a member of the Olean Rotary Club so it was wonderful to have her come and speak to the current member along with their guest.

In August three adventurous Olean Rotary Club members Carl Vahl, Mary Vahl and Dennis Casey, along with Allegany-Limestone Interactor Briana Casey and 6 others traveled to Niger in Western Africa to inspect 8 wells that had been completed and watch one well being drilled.
The trip was a big success and Carl, Mary Dennis and Briana were asked to present on the project at the District 7090 Conference in Buffalo on October 17, 2009. Over 300 conference goers watched the 17 minute multi-media program and several Rotary Clubs have pledged to donate money for new wells in 2010.
