SILENT POLICEMAN COMMITTEE MEETING

As this was the 5th Tuesday in the month of November, there was no regular noon meeting. The SILENT POLICEMAN committee meeting was held at noon at the Bartlett. Participants ordered from the menu and were billed with individual checks. This effort is hoped to be our club signature project for Walkable Olean.
Committee members present included : Sue Payne, Jody Spears, Jim Gulnac, and Mary Kay Worth. (Not present: Carl Vahl, Dave Meyers) (NOTE: Jody & Dave did not volunteer for the committee, but stayed for our meeting last month and expressed interest.)
Also attending and contributing to committee meeting discussion were members who forgot about the 5th Tuesday detail were Carmen DiGilio, Tony Evans, and Eric Garvin.
Rich Esposito, former Olean Rotarian & interested in reinstating his membership also participated. All together, 8 people participated in this productive committee meeting.
The whole group participated in several decisions.
- Drawings will be used for presentation to the city council AND enhanced with a powerpoint producing for subsequent promotional activities. Mary Kay will ask the Stone Carver, Isaiah Rashad II to adjust the drawing to include the bronze wheel as the top. Wording for the base and each of the four sides will need to be on separate paper to legibility and discussed in more detail below. Mr. Rashad has agreed to a $300 fee for the drawings and Mary Kay will begin communications to accomplish.
- Text:
- Base (how tall?) 4 sides abbreviated 4 way test. One each side. IS IT THE TRUTH? IS IT FAIR? WILL IT BUILD GOOD WILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? WILL IT BE BENEFICIAL?
- One side near the bottom and abbreviated history of the SILENT POLICEMAN. This is a homage to the SILENT POLICEMAN who stood at the intersection of State and Union in the 1920s and 30s, part of Olean's history. (Or something to this nature.)
- Sides ~ Directions with city names with an arrow. Some close, some far, some fun. PORTVILLE, ALLEGANY, HINSDALE, BRADFORD, NYC, SAN FRANCISCO, MIAMI, NORTH POLE, LONDON, LIMA, HAWAII, MOSCOS. This list will need refinement/editing with committee input.
- Timeline
- December and January will be used to prepare to present to the Olean City Council in February. (MK can do the letter to the Council to ask to be placed on their agenda. NOTE the 1st and 3rd meetings of each month are information/presentation meetings. The 2nd and 4th are action/voting meetings.)
- A courtesy call/personal conversation withe the mayor is needed relatively soon. (Who?)
- Jim & Mary Kay will request a meeting with Tom Windus for further discussion on the work/needs of the foundation, the location, site size & development (Possible bricks, engraved by supporters, to assist in cost for the site), suggested timeline for laying the foundation so that carving could begin in April or May. (We can anticipate 4 months of on site carving.)
- Total project costs: carving, site, BRONZE ROTARY WHEEL for the head (18" minimum) and the require attachment to affix it to the top of the masterpiece. (Isaiah will do this work as part of his work.)
- Close communication needed with Al Bernstein, County Clerk, to coordinate the unveiling/dedication of the SILENT POLICEMAN with the opening of the time capsule in front of the City Building on the corner of State and Union.
- Pending city council approval of the SILENT POLICEMAN, Interact clubs will be asked to assist with designing a placard for use at the site when the carver is NOT working.
- Fund Raising. The total project cost will likely near $18K ($13K for the SILENT POLICEMAN, site work, BRONZE 18" ROTARY INTERNATIONAL WHEEL $800+ through Russel Hampton.)
- Sell engraved bricks (Tony & Sue will investigate who does this work, the cost, and the potential for income. It will be critical to know the site space & determination of the number of bricks that could be sold.)
- Wine/cheese or dinner and a BIG AUCTION. Eric noted ALL MEMBERS will be needed to support an event like this and it is very possible to raise $5-$10K in a single evening done well.
- Assignments - see details above. More to come.
