Red Badge Removal

The purpose of the Red Badge program is to help assimilate new members into the Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary Club. It is what is already expected of each Rotarian and is designed to help establish a Rotarian and lifestyle pattern of service, commitment and togetherness. It is hoped these requirements will be completed within two quarters. On Friday, September 26th member Michael Ramey had the red "new member" label removed from his name badge by sponsor Monte Ramey.

Members Angie Akmakjian and Monte Ramey participated in the Northeast Chamber Non-Profit luncheon on Thursday, September 19th. Local non-profit organizations in North Tarrant County contribute much to our local well-being and economic development.  These non-profits work tirelessly to help those that need a helping hand meet their basic needs and get back on track.  Directors and volunteers with our non-profit organizations give unselfishly of their time and resources to help others and the trying times of the last several years have only made their meeting their organizational missions more challenging.

IT'S A SHAME

Posted by Robert Breneman
OPINION: At our last meeting only 30% of our membership attended which was an insult to our speaker. This Rotary year our average attendance is 46.34% which is the lowest average since we have been taking attendance on ClubRunner. We even have a Board member that has 30% attendance rate and has missed the last two board meetings. I don't know what the solution is to increase our attendance, but if we don't, our club will become insignificant. Kayla Belle Christianson

In Memory of Kayla Belle Christianson

Dear Rotarians,

PDG Kayla Belle Christianson was an extraordinarily passionate Rotarian. She was an active member for fifteen years and served as the President of the Abilene Rotary Club and District Governor of Rotary District 5790 in 2021-22. As a member of the Rotary Club of Abilene, she was a strong and vocal advocate for supporting The Rotary Foundation.

Kayla passed away after a brief illness on August 2. 2023, In memory of her lifetime of service to Rotary, her family has agreed to permit District 5790 to use her remaining Rotary Foundation Recognition Points to help spur contributions to the charity she worked so hard to promote - The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, specifically to the Polio Plus Fund.

So, for a limited time starting on August 10, 2021, District 5790 will do the following:

Using Rotary Foundation Recognition Points generously donated by Kayla Christianson’s family, we will match contributions of new cash made to Polio-Plus during Rotary Year 2023-24 on a 1-to-1 basis in amounts of $250 to $500 for any active Rotarian in District 5790 who is not yet a Paul Harris Fellow +8.

Please note: These matches are limited to one per donor and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis until August 30, 2023, or the match pool is exhausted with ever comes first. Match requests received prior to March August 10, 2023, will not be accepted.

The rules are simple: If have a Recognition Amount less than $8,500 you are eligible to participate. Simply email me at smilesrotary5790@gmail.com and let me know how much you are contributing to the Polio Plus fund– the amount must be between $250 and $500.

Then, either donate directly to the Rotary Foundation by going online at www.rotary.org (please be sure to log into My Rotary before donating) or mailing your contribution (using the attached contribution form) to The Rotary Foundation, 14280 Collections Center Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60693. You can fax your form to +1-847-328-4101 or e-mail the form to rotarysupportcenter@rotary.org

As soon as your contribution posts, I will release your match.

Finally, my thanks go to those of you who participate in supporting the great work that our Foundation does around the world and in our local communities. You truly have the vision to see, the courage to believe, and the faith to act.

Respectfully,

Sharron Miles

The purpose of the Red Badge program is to help assimilate new members into the Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary Club. It is what is already expected of each Rotarian and is designed to help establish a Rotarian and lifestyle pattern of service, commitment and togetherness. It is hoped these requirements will be completed within two quarters. Open World Profile - Daria Iwona Mejnartowicz

This year's Open World delegates were a special group of individuals. We thought it would be a good idea if you got to know them better. This week we are profiling the last of the delegates, Daria Iwona Mezjartowicz

Daria was the Facilitator for the group, which meant she was their leader. She is 51 years old, single, and speaks Polish and English. She studied Marketing and Management Faculty, MA at Akademia Leona Koźmińskiego - Kozminski University, Postgraduate Studies in Sexual Education at Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego Józefa Piłsudskiego w Warszawie,  MBA. Program in Health Care at Kozminski Academy of Entrepreneurship and Management in Warsaw, and Doctorate Studies at Academy of Physical Education, Faculty of Physiotherapy. She is a passionate humanitarian. She is a 2012 US State Department / Fortune Global Women's Mentoring Partnership Alumna. She has traveled around the world to support women and girls in the areas of sports, education health, and hygiene. She is an avid sports woman that plays badminton, volleyball, football (soccer), swimming, and skiing. Prior to becoming a Facilitator, she was employed by the Professor Adam Gruca Independent Public Teaching Hospital. She was responsible for the operational management of the Employer's rehabilitation division, physiotherapy coordination in hospital departments and outpatient clinics, supervision over the rehabilitation services, strategy development and implementation in the field of rehabilitation services in the hospital.

As the facilitator for the group, Daria kept the delegates focused on the daily objectives. She interceded when a problem developed with our interpreter and saved the situation from being ruined for the delegates. Daria has her own charity where she works with the underprivileged in several African countries. We were lucky to have her with us. Bill Bracken

Open World Profile - Zuzanna Filaber

This year's Open World delegates were a special group of individuals. We thought it would be a good idea if you got to know them better. This week we are profiling Zuzanna Filaber...

Suzanna is 29 years old and is married to Damian. She graduated with a degree in Public Health from Medical University of Warsaw and a post-graduate degree in Management in Healthcare Systems also from Medical University of Warsaw. she speaks Polish and English. Suzanna played semi-professional volleyball in a Mazovian league. She enjoys reading and traveling. Her travels have taken her to Italy, Albania, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Hellenic Republic, France, and Monaco. She is also a huge animal lover. Her career has taken her to become Workup Coordinator and Trainer for DKMS Foundation (www.dkms.pl). Currently her main role is coordinating procedures for the hematopoietic stem cells and lymphocytes for an unrelated donor. In this process, she takes care of donors and maintain great contact with them along the process. Moreover, she is in constant contact with transplant centers (from around the world); collection centers (10ccsin Poland), and courier companies from stem cell deliveries if needed...

Zuzanna - The youngest in the group, she was very friendly and attentive, but usually Zuzi was the quietest member of the delegation.  Although most of the sites we visited did not directly impact her work with stem cells and bone marrow transplants, she took extensive notes at every presentation. But, when we reached Carter Blood Care the topic was right on target. The speaker hit her sweet spot and she became talkative and full of questions.  I believe that was the highlight of the week for her. Bill Bracken

This year's Open World delegates were a special group of individuals. We thought it would be a good idea if you got to know them better. This week we are profiling Andrezej Bartosz Szczepanik

Andy is 34 years old and one of the most eligible bachelors in Poland. He has a major in Management of Healthcare Institutions from Bogdan Janski Academy and a post graduate degree in Biology, Microbiology from the University of Lodz. He speaks Polish and English. His hobbies are philosophy and badminton. His work career is a Workup Coordinator for DKMS Foundation, (www.dkms.pl). DKMS is an international charity dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. Andy has been working as a Workup Coordinator in the Medical Team with unrelated donors at the final stage of the donor and patient matching process. He cares for donors and coordinate the process of donating blood stem cells. He cooperates with medical center from more than 35 countries...

Andrzej Szczepanik - Very friendly and outgoing, when introducing himself, he said, "call me Andy" and don't worry about pronouncing my full name. As the only man in the group Andy seemed to take on a leadership role.  He was very interested in all the aspects of our agenda, but especially the presentation at Carter Blood Care about stem cell research and bone marrow transplants.  This topic related directly to his career in coordinating worldwide transfers of stem cells. My wife thought he had a cute personality and was "adoptable." Bill Bracken

Aga is 37 years old and married to Maciej. She graduated with a major in Film Arts from Lodz Film School and a post-graduate degree in Social Communication from the University of Silesia in Katowice receiving a Doctorate degree. She speaks Polish, German, Spanish, and English. Like Maga, she is a vegetarian, but also found something delicious to eat while here in Texas.  Her hobbies are photography and social campaigns leading to social changes. Her career has brought her to become owner, patient experience specialist, and trainer of AIMedica (www.aimedica.pl). She teaches doctors in the field of patient experience, and she creates, co-creates, and is an ambassador of campaigns related to health and prevention – mainly gynecological and oncology. She arranges medical facilities and conducts patient experience audits. She conducts training on cancer prevention in companies and teaches young people  principles of caring for gynecological health. (https://fb.watch/iXMhKPxB8q/)

Aga was Without a doubt the most outgoing member of the delegation. She took charge and led many of the medical discussions at our conference sites.  She had no reservations about broaching any topic, asking multiple questions of every expert presenter. An active influencer on social media, she bragged about her thousands of followers, and no one doubted her. Our week would have been much less enjoyable without her. Hopefully, some of us will travel to Poland next year and see her again... Bill Bracken

Polish Health Care Team Tours TCC Teaching Facilities

“This will change the way we work.”

That’s how Agnieszka Szuscik-Zieba, summarized a tour of Tarrant County College’s health science and nursing facilities by a group of health care administrators from Poland.

“I think we’ve seen here some methods and attitudes that we can take and provide in our everyday work and that we can also pass along to doctors and patients,” said Szuscik-Zieba, whose company trains physicians how best to interact with patients.

She was particularly impressed in that TCC teaches that a major part of patient care is to be empathetic and compassionate and to see to the patient’s mental as well as physical state. “I never thought that teaching about patient-doctor communications and teaching about clinical services can be combined,” she said.

She and five colleagues were in Tarrant County under the Open World Program sponsored by the Congressional Office for International Leadership. Established by Congress in 1999, the program brings emerging leaders from around the world to learn first-hand about aspects of American life such as government, health care and education. Delegates are hosted and specifics of the visit arranged by local groups such as Rotary Clubs.

It was the Rotary connection, in fact, that brought the group to TCC. When Senior Accounting Manager Stephanie Duelm, a member of the Mid-Cities Pacesetter Club, learned the club was to host a health care team, she thought TCC’s nursing and health science programs would be a perfect fit. Brandon Hernandez and Irma Aguilar-Coker, deans of Health Sciences and Nursing respectively, couldn’t have agreed more.

This was the club’s eighth time to host such an event and Duelm’s third time to take part. “You (the sponsoring club) have to prove you’re able to put on a good program,” she said. “We have members with different professional connections who can arrange presentations. All week long there’s program after program, so hopefully they’ll get a good exposure to the U.S. healthcare system.

But it’s much more than organizing tours. “We also need people to host the delegates in their homes,” she said, “so I host two delegates in my house every time we do it, which is really fun and a good experience for my kids to meet people from other parts of the world.”

The day began with breakfast burritos and greetings from Trinity River President Sean Madison and the respective deans, after which the tour set out for the Surgical Technology lab. Coordinator Jeffrey Leonard was on hand to describe what students were busy doing and talk about the program, not neglecting to mention his students’ stellar record on certification exams and in landing jobs.

Next up was Diagnostic Medical Sonography where Coordinator Jackie Bennett emphasized how students are taught how to interact with patients, explaining step-by-step what is happening during a procedure. Delegate Szuscik-Zieba was particularly interested in this aspect and asked numerous questions. Indeed, so many questions were asked during the tour that the deans were hard put to stick to the schedule.

The group then moved on to the Nuclear Medicine lab where Instructor Tonya Pigulski showed off her new baby – a scintillation or “gamma” camera (price tag $250,000) that can be used to track and analyze images of the human body or to pinpoint cancers from gamma rays emitted from radioactive materials introduced into the body.

The Physical Therapist Assistant program then had its turn, and Holly Dickson was asked if many of her graduates eventually earn the advanced university degrees necessary to become Registered Physical Therapists. Dickson said that while some do, many prefer the hands-on patient treatment done by PTAs as opposed to the mainly administrative duties of the registered therapist and at a vastly lower investment in time and money.

Another technological marvel was on view next as Brian Spence of Radiological Technology (most often known simply as x-ray) demonstrated the Anatomage Table, a fully segmented human 3D anatomy platform by which a body or body part can be examined layer by layer, enabling students to learn correct patient positioning.

Lastly it was nursing’s turn. Instructor Tanya Rose grilled a group of students as to which medications they might give a patient-based information on vital signs and complaint. She had taken pains to tell the visitors that these students were not yet ready for such an exercise, but she needn’t have worried. They aced the quiz.

The tour ended in Nursing’s simulation hospital where several patients were on view, from a woman in labor to a victim of some obviously serious mishap. The group had a laugh when instructor Johanna Rosser displayed a mannequin so anatomically correct that the switching of a couple of key parts could make a he into a she.

There was just enough time remaining for a team photo and some off-the-cuff reactions. “I’m really impressed,” said Andrezej Szczepanik, coordinator of a blood disease donor matching program, “You have plenty of programs and a really good staff with good equipment. The best thing for me was that the students can learn by doing, not just lectures. The teachers are really open and they’re full of energy.”

“The delegation seemed very enthusiastic and interested in the manner by which TCC trains its students in Health Sciences,” Hernandez said. “More specifically, each visitor was able to witness a variety of lab spaces and the updated technologies that our students engage with on a daily basis.”

HSC & Rotary Club Welcomed Guests from Poland

UNT Health Science Center hosted delegates from Poland last week as a part of the Open World Program facilitated by the Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary Club. The Bedford chapter of Rotary International. The campus visitors were here to learn about the U.S. health care system and were given an in-depth look at major systems in North Texas like HSC, John Peter Smith hospital and Cook Children’s hospital as well as others in the region.

“There is a list of about a hundred groups that want to come to the U.S. from the former Soviet Republic or Soviet satellites, like Poland, Serbia, Ukraine, Turkistan and on and on,” said Bill Bracken, a Rotary Club representative. “Each of them identifies a theme related to what they want to learn about democracy when they come here. This particular group is focused on medical issues, especially oncology, blood work, cancer and related topics.”

With many stops to make, the delegates had about two hours on the HSC campus, which included a Q&A session with clinic and university leadership. The tour was organized by the director of corporate relations, Lee Ann Embry, in the Office of Institutional Advancement.

Daria Mejnartowicz, the Polish delegate facilitator, said a highlight of the tour was her group’s visit to HSC’s Regional Simulation Lab, which utilizes cutting-edge technology, including lifelike mannequins and the first fully immersive 3-D medical training rooms in the state.

“What captivated me in your institution was the hospitality, great commitment and cordiality with which you welcomed our group,” said delegate facilitator Daria Mejnartowicz. “We felt honored and taken care of by your teachers and management staff. I especially liked the simulation rooms for nurses and radiologists, where you can study anatomy and pathoanatomy in depth using the Anatomage.”

Mejnartowicz noted that U.S. simulation centers typically have models of people with different skin colors, which are not available in Poland.

Jessica Rangle, HSC’s executive VP of Health Systems, said the sim lab is just one example of the types of on-campus resources that compel outsiders to take a closer look at HSC.

“Collaborations such as this become a force multiplier in enhancing the educational experience for learners,” she said. “It’s the inherently collaborative nature of HSC that opens up opportunities to share this knowledge with others. It was an honor to spend time with the Polish delegation, who were medical professionals and educators just like us who are seeking best practices to take back home.”

Along with representatives from the Bedford Rotary Club, Precinct 3 Tarrant County Commissioner Gary Fickes helped orchestrate the visit.

The Bedford Rotary Club has organized six international visits over the past seven years, finding host families to house delegates for an immersive American experience. The Congressional Office for International Leadership funds the Open World Program.

On this visit, Polish delegates spent two days in Washington D.C. before flying into North Texas for the week. While most of their schedule was filled with experiences related to medicine, they also got a taste of Fort Worth with a visit to the Fort Worth Stockyards, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, horseback riding at Camp Carter, barbecue and a trip to Billy Bob’s Texas.

Rangel said these types of international exchanges can only lead to better health care outcomes.

“With frequent international travel, we are all dealing with similar diseases, transmissions, research and care delivery,” she said. “Sharing best practices only enhances each other’s medical education delivery both locally and internationally.”

Mejnartowicz said HSC was one of two modern and innovative simulation centers the group visited while in North Texas.

“I noticed the great passion and commitment with which the teaching staff conducted our tour and proudly told us about their work,” she said. “I would like to be 20 years younger and become an HSC student.”

Open World

Last week our club sponsored a delegation of professionals from Poland for the Open World Program sponsored by the Congressional Office for International Leadership. Their interest was "Management of Healthcare Institutions", and last week we were able to visit numerous healthcare institutions along with professional lectures. We want to thank those members that made last week a success. We especially want to thank member Bill Bracken who organized and led the week's program. The polish delegation referred to Bill as the CEO. For those members who did not participate, you missed out on establishing lifelong friendships with professionals from another country. Hopefully, we will be able to participate again next year...

Dictionary Project Poem

At the Friday Dec 9th club meeting members Phil Beckman and Angie Akmakjian recited a poem about the "Dictionary Project"... The poem and presentation were so good that they received a standing ovation... For those who weren't at the meeting, here is the poem;

"Dictionary Project"
written by Angie Akmakjian

T'was the night before Christmas, when all thro' the school, not a creature was stirring, the building was so cool.

The decorations still hung by the office with care, in hopes that the Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary Club soon would be there.

The children were nestled at home in their beds, while visions of Dictionaries danced in their heads.

When out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter, there were boxes of books and a lot of chit chatter.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but an SUV full of books and 35 Rotary volunteers.

More rapid than eagles they unloaded books. One of the club members looked just like Garth Brooks.

This reference guide is sure to educate, enlighten and inspire every 3rd grade classmate.

These books have definitions of every word and a list of the Presidents that we have concurred.

It lists every planet, each country and state, the periodic table and measurements of weight.

It lists the longest word and the alphabet in braille, declaration of independence, and constitution in detail.

The books are made possible by generous funders that care that BISD students learn about all the wonders.

They left all the books for the students to have and some copies for teachers to assist with the navigation.

The driver lay a finger aside of his nose and giving a nod, down the freeway he goes.

They all jumped in cars, one member gave a whistle, and away the Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotarians flew, like the down of a thistle.

But I heard them exclaim, as they drove out of sight - May your Dictionary bring learning and be a delight...

Mission Central Request

From Ryan Barr -
In April, we will be launching a new fundraising effort: we are creating a cookbook called "The Village Pantry Cooks." The Village Pantry Cooks is a cookbook curated from recipes submitted by the Mission Central community. It celebrates the importance of food, family, and neighbors in everyday life, while highlighting the unique diversity of Hurst, Euless, and Bedford.

We would be thrilled if members of the Pacesetter Rotary are interested in submitting recipes, and can be submitted here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfNnUELYbVCl0ICHnjyzO4E6U6QJOg1mh8f0at17VKktQN9Xg/viewform?usp=pp_url

Village Library & Mardi Gras

Posted by Monte Ramey

On Fat Tuesday, the students at the Village Library read about the History of Mardi Gras, its meanings, its traditions and specifically about activities in New Orleans. Then they put on their masks and beads and marched to "When the Saints Come Marching In" accompanied by an ex-club member, Joe Spay on his accordion. Next week they will be treated to a King Cake and the tradition of King Cake parties.

The Village Library is not just about doing homework and reading. The kids often have a current event that they are learning about as well. We always need more volunteers. If you are available at 5pm on Tuesday or Thursday, let Sharon Cox know

Red Badge

Posted by Robert Breneman on Feb. 18, 2020

On Friday, March 25th member John Thomas had the red "new member" label removed from his name badge by sponsor Monte Ramey...

A big Thank You goes out to Frank & Kay Kay Allen for graciously providing their home for our Christmas Party. Approximately thirty members and spouses enjoyed a meal that included Beef Tenderloin, Pork Tenderloin, Salmon, and three different kinds of salads. The meal was catered by Market Street and it was delicious. Unfortunately, there were no photos taken so you will have to imagine the fun that was had by all. Another thanks goes out to the Christmas Party Committee that was made up of members Mike Strong, Sharon, Cox, Frank Allen, Stephanie Duelm, and Robert Breneman. On Friday, September 6th member Jolly Kahunda was the program speaker for the downtown Fort Worth Rotary Club. She talked about her father “disappearing” because in Uganda’s political turmoil he was opposing the rulers.  She and her sisters suffered and her mother told her to get out of Uganda and go to America.  She was fortunate to have a passport and was able to get a Visa at the American Embassy.  She flew to New York and met someone who convinced her to go to DFW.  She was also told to volunteer and she came to Pacesetters uninvited and came back three times. There she met Bill and Sharon and they invited her to become a member.  She wanted to help the poor children in Uganda, many of whom are orphans of parents who died of AIDS.  Her organization, Malayika Rescue Mission, helps boys and girls to attend school and stay in school.  She thanked  Bill and Sharon specifically and thanked the rest of us for attending...

Sixteen years ago member Sharon Cox founded the non-profit organization "The Ladder Alliance" whose mission is to provide women victims of domestic violence and low-income women with the tools to lead self-reliant, independent and successful lives. She started with a contribution of $200 from each board member with no employees. This year the budget is over $750,000 with several full time employees. On Friday April 26th The Ladder Alliance held their 7th annual "It's In The Bag" fundraiser and it was the last function that Sharon would oversea as the Executive Director. She leaves a thriving organization that would not be the success it is without her vision and determination. We all should be proud that we know her and that she exemplified Rotary's "Service Above Self"... I know I do...

Chris Marshall Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Chris Marshall Memorial Endowed Scholarship
2018 Recipient – Kyleigh Whitsell

Kyleigh will graduate from TCC’s Northeast Campus in May 2019 with an Associate of Arts in Teaching degree, and then transfer to UNT to earn a bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies in preparation to become an elementary school teacher.   She is the first generation in her family to attend college, and she graduated from Richland HS in 2017.  Neither of Kyleigh’s parents graduated from high school, so their wage earning capacity has always been low.  She remembers the family (that includes 4 children) being evicted from apartments – one after the other – due to lack of ability to pay rent.  “The one constant in my life was school – I always found joy, peace and consistency in my school classroom or hallways,” she writes. “That’s why I want to be a teacher – to give back to students the joy I received from school as a student.”  Kyleigh lives at home but is responsible for all of her living and educational expenses.  She works many hours a week for the income to pay her expenses…this scholarship is a blessing to her.  It allows her the opportunity to pay for tuition and buy all of her supplies; this will put her ahead as she begins to save for her costs at UNT.  Her words of thanks are below:

Dear Donor,
Thank you so much for not only gifting me this scholarship, but providing this scholarship in the first place – what a wonderful thing to do! The fact that you are willing to spend money on someone else’s future, with no gain for you, is awe-inspiring. I am extremely grateful that I am able to be the recipient of this award because now I can relax. I was worried about paying for books and supplies as well as the current bills I am already paying, so thank you for allowing me to breathe a sigh of relief and just focus on studying.
Thank you,
Kyleigh Whitsell

Joe's "Two Minute in Rotary"

Posted by Robert Breneman on Jan. 09, 2018

Member Joe Harrington had "Two Minutes in Rotary" on Friday, January 5th... Joe decided to be creative and compose a poem accompanied by music... It was so well received that Joe received a standing ovation... We felt all should be able to read it even though you might have missed the music... Well done Joe...

Put on your Name Badge-ary
Here comes Rotary
So much funary
to join a Rotary

Rotary is Service Above Self
with a goal of putting Polio on the shelf

When you feel like the only folks in town who pay their quarterly fee
Here’s a list of people who are Rotarians just like you and me
Winston Churchill used to say.. the four way test
he didn’t wear the lions vest

Guess who else had a fireside chat
professional boxer Manny Pacquiao how about that
JC Penney and Charles Walgreens traded the rotary banner
so did Connie Mack, a big baseball fanner,

So put a dollar in the happy bucket son
cause you can give a classification speech with Walt Disney and Sam Walton

Put on your Name badger
it’s time for Rotary
Former President John F Kennedy
Flew the flag of Rotary

Kim Jong-un, not a rotarian
But guess who was? Adeli Stevenson,
We got Cecil B DeMille and Luciano Pavarotii
Colonel Sanders wa a Paul Harris fellow – not to shotty

Some people think that Harvey Weinstein is
Well he’s not, but who’s in our home
Pope Francis, the Bishop of Rome

So may rotarians helping others
Rob Grinkowski isn’t, but I heard all his brothers

Lets have a Murder Mystery
It’s time to celebrate Rotary
and win the four way speechary
while eating eggs so runnarrey
So drink your coffee and juicer
And say the pledge togethery

We love our Friday morningarys
Have a happy, happy, happy,
New Year of Rotary

Happy Rotary

Tajikistan Visitors

Participating in community service as a Rotarian can mean reaching out to the other side of the world. Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary, a morning club that meets at 7 a.m. every Friday at Texas Star, is hosting a group of emerging leaders from Tajikistan. This is made possible through Rotary International’s Open World Leadership Program. The visitors arrive February 21st and will depart on the 28th. Club members provide accommodations during their stay and provide transportation to a variety of preplanned events. Texas hospitality will be experienced first-hand, along with a whirlwind cultural and educational experience. Tarrant County has set-up a series of meetings that are informative and enlightening.  The City of Bedford is hosting a municipal tour and the Bedford Library is holding an informal meet and greet.  Also on the menu is a tour of the Arts Council Northeast where they will learn about arts and culture in the Mid-Cities.
The Open World Program, managed by the Open World Leadership Center (OWLC) and funded by the U.S. Congress, is a special program available to Rotary Clubs in the United States. Participating Rotary clubs host Open World civic leaders in their communities and develop a visitor program based on Open World civic themes. The intent of the Open World Program is to promote mutual understanding and introduce emerging leaders to counterparts in the U.S. while nurturing democratic and free-market principles.

Micro Credit Project in Quito

Posted by Bill Bracken on Mar. 28, 2012
By supporting a Micro-Credit Project in Quito, Ecuador, our club provides financing for start up entrpreneurs.  This is our second year of this effort.  Micro-credit centers are operated much like credit unions in making small loans to their members who would not qualify for other financing.  When the funds are repaid, the member qualifies for a larger loan and so on.  The default rate on these loans is near zero.  This is the feedback we received from our partner, Quito Occidente Rotary Club, after our initial contribution.

"I want to update you regarding the $400 you gave us for micro-credits. Your contribution was given to Patricia Peña Sánchez, a member of center No. 38, one of centers we sponsor in the county of Rioverde in Esmeraldas province. She is on her 3rd cycle of loan. She is a very a good member and has already paid regularly her first two loans. She will use the money to raise chickens. Patricia is 37 years old and has two children, the oldest boy is 13 years old and unfortunately disabled and the young girl is 3 years old. As soon as we have a picture of her, I will send it to you."

This year we doubled the amount to $800.

Rotary Project Fair VI - Quito, Ecuador

Posted by Mary Frazior on Nov. 18, 2010
On Nov. 13-14 thirty-one Rotary Clubs in District 4400 (Ecuador) presented humanitarian projects at the Project Fair in Quito which their clubs would like to sponsor and requested financial support from international Rotary Clubs. Potential Rotary partner clubs from California, Colorado, Texas, Washington state and France attended.

The project proposals ran the gamut from megacity water purification plants to family bio-sand filters, reconstruction of schools to back packs and school supplies, sanitary latrines to hospital equipment, prosthetic replacements and facial reconstruction surgery to micro-banks, a desalinizaton plant to water wells and many more. The asking price for these projects ranged to over $500,000.

Mid-Cities Pacesetters International Chair attended the event and will present options to our board of directors for consideration -Pacesetters' participation will be considerably less than $500,000.

Project Fair VIII - Quayaquil, Ecuador

Posted by Bill Bracken
story thumbnail

Rotary District 4400 (Ecuador) hosted Project Fair VIII in the coastal city of Quayaquil from Oct 12 to 14 where 25 Ecuadorean Rotary Clubs proposed humanitarian projects and asked for a Global Grant partnership and/or financial help from representatives of US Rotary Clubs in attendance.

The projects targetted needs in one or more these important focus areas identified by The Rotary Foundation:

1) Water and Sanitation 2) Basic Education and Literacy  3) Disease Prevention and Treatment  4) Economic and Community Development  5) Maternal and Child Health  6) Vocational Service

Each presentation focused on the need being met and how many people would benefit.

The Mid-Cities Pacesetters Rotary Club has supported projects in Ecuador for several years.  In 2012-2013 we are continuing long term partnerships with Quito based Rotary Clubs in Economic and Community Development (micro-credit loans), Water and Sanitation (bio-filters - clean water), and Maternal and Child Health (Children of Ecuador - orphans).  In prior years we have supported Basic Education and Literacy (elementary school subsistance scholarship and computer lab equipment), Disease Prevention and Treatment (hospital expansion), and Economic and Community Development (vermiculture - worm farm).

Binnie and Bill Bracken attended the fair to personally present our club's checks for the three current efforts and to learn about new areas where we might assist in the future.
