Rotary Fair and Business Expo to Return This August

Beginning Tuesday, August 15, the annual Rotary Fair and Business Expo will once again transform the Hillsborough Promenade (315 Route 206) into a classic carnival with a colorful midway, over 20 amusement rides, games of chance, fireworks, food vendors and an exposition of local businesses.

“We are very proud to host this annual Hillsborough family tradition,” commented Shawn Lipani, incoming president of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough and Hillsborough’s mayor. “The Fair not only offers our community a fun summer event, but it raises the funds that enable our Rotary Club to help support numerous important community service initiatives. This year, we are grateful to welcome Newark-based Construction Pros, LLC, as this year’s Rotary Fair “Gold Sponsor.”

The Rotary Fair will open for five days beginning Tuesday, August 15.   Fair hours are 6 – 10 PM on Tuesday through Thursday, and 6 – 11 PM on Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the Fair’s classic thrill rides, food vendors, games of chance and an exposition of local businesses, a spectacular fireworks display by Interstate Fireworks and sponsored by Petrock’s Bar & Grille and Petrock’s Liquors, will light up Hillsborough skies on Friday evening, August 18, at approximately 10 PM (rain date of Saturday August 19, 10 PM).

Cashless Ride Payment System

The Rotary Fair will once again feature a cashless payment system for all Fair rides.  Patrons will purchase a special wristband at kiosks available throughout the Fairgrounds.  The wrist bands are then used in place of tickets to gain entry to the rides.  The cost of each ride will be automatically deducted from the amount of money on the wristband. A $35, all-night-long ride access purchase option is available every night, or patrons may choose a different dollar amount appropriate for only select rides. The food and game vendors will continue to accept only cash.

As in years past, there will be a Giant 50/50 Raffle that has resulted in a multi-thousand-dollar payout to a single winner.  The winning ticket will be selected Saturday evening, August 19, at the Fair.  The winner need not be present at the time of the drawing.  Tickets will be available for purchase throughout the Fair dates for $5 each.  As always, all proceeds raised at the Fair are used to fund a wide variety of contributions and service projects benefitting the local community.

Local Business Exposition

The Fair also offers local businesses with multiple opportunities to showcase their services and connect directly with customers through the purchase of a $300 sign displayed at the Fair throughout the week, or the purchase of a $600 tented space that provides an opportunity to meet and talk with attendees.

“Meeting prospective customers at a highly regarded community event can do a great deal to boost a company’s image and customer base,” noted Ken Genco, the Rotary Club of Hillsborough member in charge of the business showcase. “Community members deeply appreciate those businesses that demonstrate their community support through events like this.”

Pam Borek Award

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough Honors
Township Clerk Pam Borek

In a rare departure from tradition, The Rotary Club of Hillsborough recognized Township Clerk, Pam Borek, with its highest honor – The Paul Harris Fellowship Award – for her exemplary service to Hillsborough Township and to Rotary.

Established in 1957, and primarily used to honor Rotarians for exceptional service in pursuit of the Rotary ideal of ‘Service Above Self,’ it has, on rare occasions, been given to non-Rotarians who routinely go above and beyond in the exercise of their public responsibilities and in their support of Rotary.

“Our success as a community service organization not only depends upon the support of our community, but those in local government who partner with us on a wide array of initiatives,” commented Rotary Club of Hillsborough President, Ashley Rose.  “No one could ask for a better partner than Pam Borek.”

Ms. Borek played a substantial role in such projects as “Flags for Heroes,” the initiative that honored our service men and women last Veteran’s Day by publicly displaying an American Flag with the veteran’s name affixed to the flagpole.  The display, which was a joint imitative between the Township and the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, created a highly visible and touching field of 100 flags at the Municipal Complex.  In addition, she helped the Rotary Club launch its Legacy Book Bin, where residents can donate used books to help raise funds for Rotary. Today, the project has expanded to two locations at the Municipal Complex and at the Iron Peak Sports Complex.

Paul Harris Fellowship Award

The Paul Harris Fellowship is named in honor of the organization’s founder, who created Rotary in 1905 in Chicago to bring together professionals with diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world. The Paul Harris Fellowship Award was established by Rotary International in 1957, and has been awarded to Rotarians and non-Rotarians who have exemplified the Rotary ideal of “Service Above Self.”

Nine-Year-Old Finds National Following for Her Ukraine Fundraising

Above: Rotarian Tricia Marciano (left) poses with nine-year-old Sofia Murtazin (right) and her original artwork, which she sells to raise funds for Ukraine.

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough members listened in awe as Hillsborough resident, nine-year-old Sofia Murtazin, shared her inspiring story of raising funds for the victims of the invasion of Ukraine. With her mother Marta by her side, Sofia spoke at a Rotary Club event held at Flounder’s Brewery Wednesday evening.

Sofia, who attends third grade at Hillsborough Elementary School, sprang into action the day after the invasion and began painting signs to raise money to purchase needed supplies for the people of Ukraine. Both of Sophia’s parents were born in Ukraine and have many family members and friends who continue to live under constant threat from Russia’s invasion. With her mother’s help with a social media campaign, Sofia’s efforts have gone viral and have touched the hearts of supporters across the nation.

“Sofia’s compassion and dedication are just so inspiring,” commented Rotary Club of Hillsborough member, Tricia Marciano, who invited her to speak at the Club’s Wednesday meeting.  “It was an easy decision for our Club to donate money and invite her to speak to us.  I can’t imagine a better example of the Rotary motto in action – Service Above Self.”  To date, Sofia has raised over $11,000, which enabled her to purchase medical supplies and toiletries, and send them to Ukraine.

Jeremy Lees, Flounder’s owner, who also has family ties to Ukraine, not only hosted the Rotary event, but joined in the presentation sharing information about his own on-going efforts in support of Ukraine, including a $3,000 donation to Sofia.

One year after launching the New Legacy Book Donation Program in Hillsborough, over 20 tons of books have been collected at two Township locations raising nearly $2,000 for the Rotary Club of Hillsborough Foundation.

Donated books are either resold through on-line shopping sites like Amazon, or if deemed unsalable, recycled.  New Legacy Books, the non-profit organization that manages the operation, returns a percentage of the proceeds to The Rotary Club of Hillsborough Foundation each month.

“In addition to our various hands-on volunteer efforts, our Club raises thousands of dollars each year that allow us to provide needed philanthropic support,” commented Ben Rozenblat, president of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.  “With the generous support of Hillsborough community members, we have been able to fund a wide variety of organizations and charitable causes including post-secondary school scholarships for Hillsborough residents, essential goods for homeless veterans and veterans serving abroad, relief to victims of natural disasters, and, most recently, support for the families fleeing the invasion of Ukraine.”

The New Legacy Book Bins are located at the Township Municipal Building parking lot adjacent to soccer fields and at Iron Peak Sports and Events at 137 Mountain View Road in Hillsborough.

“New Legacy Books would like to thank the Rotary Club of Hillsborough for hosting and promoting our book bin fundraiser, which has been a great success in our first year in Hillsborough,” noted Matt Laiacona, from the New Legacy Books operation. “We also thank our fellow book readers in Hillsborough who support the fundraiser with ongoing book donations.  We look forward to many years of fundraising for the Rotary Club and working with the Hillsborough community.”

Military Hat Sale to Help Homeless Vets

Military Caps for Sale at the Annual Rotary Fair to
Fund Essential Goods for Homeless Veterans

Our military veterans not only face the many challenges inherent in their active service around the world, but often must cope with lifelong medical and personal challenges as they try to reintegrate into society upon their return. That struggle too often leads to medical and psychological challenges, substance abuse and homelessness. The Veterans Administration can provide for much, but not all of the services and basic needs of these veterans.

In 2020, The Rotary Club of Hillsborough joined a consortium of other New Jersey Rotary Clubs to provide needed essentials to homeless veterans receiving temporary housing, medical and psychological care at Community Hope, a non-profit organization housed on the Veterans Administration campus in Lyons, New Jersey.

To help raise funds for this program, The Rotary Club of Hillsborough will sell high quality caps featuring logos of all branches of the military, as well as caps that display patriotic slogans supporting the service men and women who help protect our freedom.

“The consortium is able to purchase goods, such as winter coats, hats and boots, underwear, toiletries, etc., at a very low cost and distribute them to the Community Hope residents each month,” commented Rich Salem, member of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.  For each cap purchased at $25 the consortium can purchase a pair of top-quality insulated winter boots.

Fair attendees can add their support to this important effort by stopping at the Rotary tent at the Fair Grounds and purchase one of these caps.  The supply is limited, so supporters are encouraged to stop by as soon as they arrive at the Fair. The Fair opens for five days beginning August 17.

In memory of Vince Lipani

In Memoriam

On July 19, we lost a model Rotarian, an admired local business owner and our friend, Vince Lipani. A long-standing member and leader in the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, Vince’s generosity and can-do spirit over his many years as a Rotarian leaves an indelible mark on our club.  His no-nonsense leadership style as a Board member and service project lead helped ensure our Club’s success. Whether it was organizing the annual Easter Egg Hunt for area children, planting a grove of cherry trees in honor of Michael Merdinger, another former Rotary Club of Hillsborough member and Township Administrator, who passed away in 2016, or convincing other local business owners to contribute to the Club’s annual Rotary Fair fundraiser, Vince never hesitated to jump in wherever his help was needed.  The Rotary Club of Hillsborough, and our community are much the better for Vince’s service, and we will miss our dear friend.  At the request of Vince’s family, you may join us in honoring Vince’s memory and years of service, by contributing to the Rotary Club of Hillsborough Foundation using the link below.

The Hillsborough Rotary Fair and Business Expo Are Back!

The Hillsborough Rotary Fair and Business Expo Are Back!
Scheduled for August 17 – 21
Spectacular Fireworks Show Friday, August 20
After a year’s hiatus due to COVID restrictions, the annual Rotary Fair and Business Expo will once again transform the Hillsborough Promenade (315 Route 206) into a classic carnival with a colorful midway, over 20 amusement rides, games of chance, fireworks, food vendors and an exposition of local businesses.

“We are proud to welcome A&B Landscaping of Hillsborough, NJ, as this year’s Event Sponsor. commented Rich Salem, president of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough. “The Rotary Fair has become a tradition for generations of Hillsborough families, and its return this August could not come at a better time.”

The Rotary Fair will open for five days beginning Tuesday, August 17.   Fair hours are 6 – 10 PM on Tuesday through Thursday, and 6 – 11 PM on Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the Fair’s classic thrill rides, food vendors, games of chance and an exposition of local businesses, a spectacular firework display by Interstate Fireworks and sponsored by Petrock’s Bar & Grille and Petrock’s Liquors, will light up Hillsborough skies on Friday evening, August 20, at approximately 10 PM (rain date of Saturday August 21, 10 PM).

New Cashless Ride Payment System

For the first time, the Rotary Fair will feature a cashless payment system for all Fair rides.  Patrons will purchase a special wristband at kiosks available throughout the Fairgrounds.  The wrist bands are then used in place of tickets to gain entry to the rides.  The cost of each ride will be automatically deducted from the amount of money on the wristband. A $30, all-night-long ride access purchase option is available every night, or patrons may choose a different dollar amount appropriate for only select rides. The food and game vendors will continue to accept only cash.

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough, as well as the games, rides and food vendors at the Fair are committed to observing the State-mandated COVID safety guidelines in force during the Fair dates.  In addition to multiple washing stations adjacent to the restrooms, special hand sanitation stations will be available throughout the Fair.  All Fair patrons are kindly asked to cooperate with all State-mandated guidelines.

As in years past, there will be a Giant 50/50 Raffle that has resulted in a multi-thousand-dollar payout to a single winner.  The winning ticket will be selected Saturday evening, August 20, at the Fair.  The winner need not be present at the time of the drawing.  Tickets will be available for purchase throughout the Fair dates for $5 each.  As always, all proceeds raised at the Fair are used to fund a wide variety of contributions and service projects benefitting the local community.

Local Business Exposition

The Fair also provides local businesses with multiple opportunities to showcase their services and connect directly with customers through the purchase of a $300 sign displayed at the Fair throughout the week, or the purchase of a $600 tented space that provides an opportunity to meet and talk with attendees.

For more information on the upcoming Hillsborough Rotary Fair or how to participate as a vendor, please contact Ken Genco at 908-229-5045, kgenco@att.net, or Abed Medawar, (908) 256-5349, mobileabed@gmail.com.

Rotary Fair Cancelled

As a result of COVID-19 related risks and restrictions, the Rotary Club of Hillsborough decided to cancel this year’s annual Rotary Fair, held each August at the Hillsborough Promenade, 315 Route 206 (adjacent to the Lowe’s parking lot).

“We are greatly disappointed to have to cancel this year’s Fair,” commented Rotary President, Tricia Marciano. “The Fair is not only a highly anticipated annual tradition for Hillsborough families, it is our major fundraiser.  However, we look forward to bringing the Fair back better than ever in 2021.”

Steps Together Founder to Receive Jean Harris Award

Pictured above: Courtney with husband Mike Newman

Rotary International District 7475 will honor Courtney Newman, founder of Steps Together, with its prestigious Jean Harris award. Newman was nominated by the Rotary Club of Hillsborough for the extraordinary community service that she offers through her Hillsborough-based 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to inspiring the community to pay their blessings forward and support Somerset County families facing a medical crisis. The award will be presented in a virtual ceremony on June 24th.

“The Jean Harris Award is the highest honor that Rotary can bestow on a non-Rotarian, explained Rotary Club of Hillsborough President, Tricia Marciano. “Though not a Rotarian, we believe that Courtney truly embodies the ideals of Rotary, as well as our motto, “Service Above Self.”

Formed in 2013, Steps Together, with the support of the community, provides families facing a medical crisis with needed financial relief, while also bringing awareness to the conditions that impact them. Their stories and needs are shared within the local community by creating pages for each family on the Steps Together website. The site is then used to centralize fundraising efforts to create a “one-stop shop” for anyone wishing to help.  Steps Together has raised over $800,000 since its inception, which has covered a wide spectrum of costs for families facing their most difficult challenges.

Courtney and Mike Newman became inspired to help families after experiencing medical scares with both their young children. During that brief time, the couple learned about the complete disruption to life that occurs, the true cost of medical care and the overwhelming feeling of isolation that can be helped tremendously by the smallest act of kindness.  Courtney decided to find a way to pay her blessings forward and encourage the local community to join her in this endeavor.

Rotary Responds to Families in Need

In its ongoing effort to address community needs during these challenging times, The Rotary Club of Hillsborough worked with other area Rotary Clubs to secure a district-wide grant to purchase meals for families in need.  For Hillsborough, that resulted in an allocation of 936 meals that were delivered on Saturday to the Hillsborough Food Pantry by Rotary Club of Hillsborough President, Tricia Marciano (pictured attached)., and Club Board Member and head of the Township’s Parks and Recreation Department, Bob Wagner

“Our current economy has led to a substantial increase in the number of families qualifying for assistance,” commented Club President Marciano. “Not surprisingly, the Hillsborough community has generously responded to the need with both monetary contributions, as well as with bags of groceries. We are doing our part as well.”

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough’s response has included organizing a community grocery drive and purchasing meals for medical workers at RWJ University Hospital in Somerville and New Brunswick, as well as for the children and caregivers at the Hillsborough YMCA daycare center.  Additionally, to honor those working on the front lines of the Coronavirus crisis, the Rotary Club of Hillsborough displayed banners around town thanking all of our essential workers.

Soldiers Acknowledge Rotary's Support

Members of the 1-18th Cavalry Unit Ministry Team recently acknowledged the role that the Rotary Club of Hillsborough plays in preparing packages of food and toiletries that are shipped to our troops serving abroad.  The Rotary-hosted event is part of the efforts of Operation Shoebox, a Hillsborough-based non-profit that conducts packing events throughout the year.  A Certificate of Appreciation and photo of the unit were sent to Club President, Greg Burchette, and shared with Rotary members.  The Club's annual packing event is held each December  at the Hillsborough YMCA, and brings together Rotarians and hundreds of members of the community to pack thousands of boxes that are then shipped to our troops.

Operation Shoebox New Jersey, based in Hillsborough, was founded in February 2005. It is an all-volunteer grass roots organization dedicated to collecting donated supplies and shipping care packages to U.S. troops based in Iraq, Afghanistan and other Middle East countries.  Operation Shoebox seeks donations of food and personal care items that are placed in personal care packages shipped to members of the US military deployed overseas. Inspiring Talk by Habitat for Humanity Director

Habitat for Humanity Director of Community Resource Development, Susan Harkins, joined Club members at our Wednesday, March 13th,  evening meeting and presented an overview of the work of the Raritan Valley Chapter.  She discussed ongoing projects and dispelled some of the myths surrounding their work.  For instance, the homes they build with volunteers are not given away to families, but are transferred to them only after the family has committed many hours of work in the construction of the home and qualified for a low-interest mortgage.  The program boasts numerous success stories by helping to lift families out of poverty and stabilize family circumstances.   The Raritan Valley Chapter recently opened a "ReStore" in Manville that offers gently used furniture, appliances, home decór, jewelry and more to the public at dramatic discounts.  The ReStore accepts donations and all proceeds from sales support their community projects.

Rotary Brings Improved Sanitation to Quillinga Ecuador

One year ago, seven New Jersey Rotary Clubs, including the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, participated in a project to improve sanitary conditions for 14 families in the town of Quilinga in southern Ecuador. The project provided the families with sanitary units that include a toilet, sink, shower, and laundry area, all connected to a septic tank. These units now serve 120 residents.

One of Rotary’s many global projects, the Ecuadorean sanitary units were made possible through a combination of financial contributions and support from the seven participating New Jersey Rotary Clubs, the local Rotary Club of Loja, Ecuador, and a Rotary Foundation grant.  The total cost of the Ecuadorean project was $37,900.   The Rotary Club of Loja held an inauguration and hand over function in late Dec 2018.

Most of us marvel at those people who seem to effortlessly recall everyone's name, deliver a speech without looking at notes, or retain, over time, much of the information they read or hear. Well, according to memory expert, Matthew Goerke, such a memory is not necessarily a gift at birth, but the result of training - and he has been delivering that training to thousands of business men and women, public speakers and celebrities for years.

Some Christmas Joy for Families in Need

Hillsborough’s Social Services Department had some 30 elves on hand Wednesday evening to help sort and pack gifts for Hillsborough families in need.  Members of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, joined by their family members, friends, and Boy Scouts, helped make sure that each of the family members that were signed up with the Social Services Department’s support program had ample gifts to celebrate the holiday season.  Families also receive food from the Town’s Food Pantry, along with gift cards, including $4,000 in Kohls gift cards donated by the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.

“We can all use a helping hand from time to time,” commented Rotary Club of Hillsborough President, Greg Burchette. “Giving back to our community is part of our Club’s DNA, and this Hillsborough holiday packing event is very special to us.”

Manville Third-Graders Receive Lesson in Charity from Rotary Club of Hillsborough

Continuing one of its longest running annual traditions, the Rotary Club of Hillsborough distributed free dictionaries to Manville’s third-graders on Friday, December 7, ensuring that all Hillsborough and Manville children will have easy access to a tool that will serve them well throughout their academic careers.  The children, who were learning about caring this month in school, were asked to look up the word “charity,” which Rotary Club of Hillsborough President,Greg Burchette, explained was key to the mission of Rotary.

2018 Rotary Fair Volunteers Honored

The 2018 Rotary Fair may be long over, but the process of thanking Fair volunteers for their support was very much on-going at the Club's October 10 meeting.  Numerous local organizations ranging from the Hillsborough High School Robotics Club to the Leadership Somerset Class of 2018 were recognized for their support during the Fair and presented with checks for their organizations.  The annual Rotary Fair is the primary fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.  All of the proceeds raised at the Fair are returned to the community in the form of grants and contributions to organizations delivering a wide array of services to the Hillsborough community and directly to families in need. Pictured above in both photos are incoming President, Patricia Marciano, and Board members Bob Wagner and Josh Riding (wearing Rotary Shirts) at the check presentation.

Rotary Establishes Hurricane Harvey Matching Relief Fund

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ, August 31, 2017 — In response to the overwhelming devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, The Rotary Club of Hillsborough has established a relief fund and will match community donations up to a total of $2,500.  The Club will use the combined funds to purchase gift cards to major retailers to assist families who have been displaced from their homes by the unprecedented floods. Community members are invited to make donations over the next two weeks using the “youcaring” page, https://www.youcaring.com/thisisafundraisertohelpthevictimsofhurricaneharvey-920125   created for this purpose.

“We will focus our support on the recovery phase, while the Red Cross and other first responders take care of the immediate needs of the community,” commented Anthony Franchini, president of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough. “As a community, we can offer our support in many ways. “Our ‘youcaring’ page, https://www.youcaring.com/thisisafundraisertohelpthevictimsofhurricaneharvey-920125 , allows anyone wishing to make a donation to double its impact, enabling us to make a difference for many families who have lost so much.”

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough will work with fellow Rotary Clubs and others in the affected areas of Texas and Louisiana to distribute the gift cards directly to those families in need. It is anticipated that thousands of families whose homes and belongings were lost to the storm will need to replace clothing and other essentials so they can begin to establish a normal life again after the flooding subsides and the recovery phase begins.

Thank you for your support.

Vintage Aircraft and Military “Fly-By” to Highlight Rotary’s Military and Veterans Appreciation Day October 8

_____________________________________________

Public Invited to Enjoy the Day’s Attractions

And Show Their Support for Active Military and Veterans

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ – The skies over Hillsborough’s Central Jersey Regional Airport (47N) will be filled with a rare showing of military and vintage fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters on Saturday, October 8, as part of a day-long event to help the Rotary District 7510 raise funds for various charities and foundations dedicated to assisting active US military and veterans. Pilots from dozens of airports throughout New Jersey have been invited to participate with their planes. The event will be held from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM and admission is free.

“We’re very excited that the military has agreed to stage a fly-by of important military aircraft, including a C130 Transport, a C17, and Apache Helicopters,” commented Hillsborough Rotary Club member Jodi DiPane-Saleem, who heads the Rotary committee organizing the event. “We also have plans for several interactive static displays, which children can explore, including a military helicopter!”

Veterans and active military will have an opportunity to be celebrated by the public while enjoying a day filled with fun events and helpful information. The general public – young and old – is also invited to enjoy the day’s events, which will include food vendors, live music, military equipment, a static airplane display, face painting, fire engines and other activities for children. A key fundraiser and favorite from last year’s event – plane rides by the flight school, TriState Aviation – returns this year.

Proceeds from the event will be used to fund New Jersey organizations that work to benefit former and active members of the US military. Donations of food, clothing and toiletries for the military and veterans will be collected at the event.  Participating organizations include Operation Shoebox New Jersey and Operation ChillOut. Outreach and information for members of the military and veterans, as well as their families, will be provided by several organizations, including the Veterans Administration (VA) and Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey. Veterans who need assistance with obtaining benefits or help from the VA are encouraged to come to speak with these representatives to learn about the valuable resources they provide.

Operation ShoeBox, Operation ChillOut and Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey will host displays at the event where donated items can be dropped off.  Operation Shoebox New Jersey will have a display of greeting cards for children to color. The greetings will be included in the care packages shipped overseas. Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey will have representatives on hand to assist vets with any personal and/or financial difficulties they are having.

The rain date for Military and Veterans Appreciation Day is Sunday, October 9.  Entrance to the airport is located at 1034 Millstone River Road.

Veterans Appreciation Day is sponsored by Rotary District 7510, which comprises 39 Rotary Clubs with a total of over 1,000 members from Central New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  Participating in this event are the following clubs: Branchburg, Bound Brook – Bridgewater, Dunellen-Greenbrook, Hillsborough, Lambertville – New Hope, Montgomery – Rocky Hill, Piscataway, Plainsboro – North and South Brunswick, Somerville and Bridgewater.

About Rotary

Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world.

The Hillsborough NJ Rotary Club currently has over 40 active members from Hillsborough and surrounding communities.   Members include business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.  The Hillsborough Rotary serves the Hillsborough community.  All funds raised at the Rotary Fair and other Rotary events throughout the year are donated back to community projects. The Hillsborough Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 6 pm at Pheasants Landing Restaurant at 311 Amwell Road in Hillsborough.

Beneficiaries of Benefit

Operation ChillOut, based in Long Valley, is a grassroots interfaith coalition founded in the year 2000 by concerned volunteers to help a group of homeless Viet Nam veterans living in the open under a railroad trestle in northern NJ. They  provide emergency supplies and survival gear to the most vulnerable members of our communities wherever they encounter them. Operation ChillOut is seeking new and unused clothing that will be donated to homeless veterans. Requested items include knit cap and gloves, wool/nylon blend socks, insulated underwear and hooded, zipper sweatshirts in sizes large and extra large.

Operation Shoebox New Jersey, based in Hillsborough, was founded in February 2005. It is an all-volunteer grass roots organization dedicated to collecting donated supplies and shipping care packages to U.S. troops based in Iraq, Afghanistan and other Middle East countries.  Operation Shoebox seeks donations of food and personal care items that are placed in care packages shipped to members of the US military deployed overseas. Requested items include canned tuna, canned fruit, 1 oz. boxes of cereal, dried fruit, trail mix, granola bars, beef jerky, small bags of pretzels and chips, small tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes, small packets of moist wipes, soap, deodorant, small canisters of powder and small bottles of shampoo.

Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey is a non-profit organization specializing in Veteran advocacy and financial assistance. Many vets aren’t aware of all the benefits available to them and if they are, they don’t know how to navigate through the system to obtain them, which can be grueling. Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey provides a wealth of information and support to vets looking for services and/or having difficulty obtaining benefits from the Veteran’s Administration. Their agency is comprised of professional volunteers willing to donate time and resources to support New Jersey Vets. Are you having difficulty paying utility bills? Finding employment? Obtaining benefits or require legal assistance? If so, Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey can help you navigate in the right direction to address your needs.

A Fundraiser and Fun Raiser

Posted by Rich Salem
A Fundraiser and Fun Raiser

Nine years ago, the Hillsborough Rotary Club offered to take over an annual carnival sponsored by the town’s volunteer fire department as their fundraiser.  It was a bold decision for the Club leadership, in that they had never before operated such a complex, labor-intensive, weeklong fundraising event.  The Club members and other community volunteers would need to set up the Fair grounds, arrange for food vendors, man ticket booths and game trailers, park cars, sell raffle tickets, collect money, and clean the grounds each evening – and that represented only a few of the tasks that needed their time and attention. The challenges were many. Nevertheless, on August 21, 2016, the Club completed its ninth consecutive Hillsborough Rotary Fair, which set a new fundraising record for the Hillsborough Rotary Foundation.

“We have made a number of important changes to the Fair over the years,” commented Abed Medawar, president of the Hillsborough Rotary. “We’re always trying to improve on what we did the year before.  Over the years, we’ve added rides for young children, a giant 50/50 raffle and a motorcycle raffle, and a 20-minute long fireworks spectacular on the Friday of Fair week.”

Perhaps the most meaningful addition to the Fair since its inception, however, has been the introduction of a special, invitation-only afternoon dedicated to children with special needs and their families.  A natural companion to the Club’s ongoing support of Autism and Down Syndrome research and care, the dedicated afternoon, including rides, games and food, is free of charge to the children and their families.  Over the years, hundreds of families have participated in what the Club has named “Family Fun Day.”

The sound level and lights associated with the rides and games are intentionally subdued to accommodate the needs of the special visitors on this day.  However, the level of the children’s enthusiasm is anything but subdued.  And the joy they express when winning a prize (guaranteed on this day) or riding the Ferris wheel is evidence enough that this event is as special to them as it is to the Club members.  Each year, the parents of the special needs children routinely write to the Club expressing their great joy and gratitude for what is often a rare fun event in which their entire family can participate and feel welcome and comfortable.

Over 15,000 people from Hillsborough and adjoining towns visited the Fair this August, and enjoyed the 21 amusement rides, food vendors, games and spectacular fireworks display.  Not only is the Fair itself a highly anticipated annual event for the community, but it also raises funds for the Hillsborough Rotary Foundation that enables the Club to support many important community needs throughout the year.
Despite all the work and many volunteer hours required of members each August, if you ask any one of them if they want to continue sponsoring the annual Rotary Fair, you’ll get one consistent answer -  “absolutely.”

The Honey Bee Project 2016

Posted by John Shockley on Apr 19, 2016

It's hard to believe, but over 1 year ago Hillsborough Township and the Hillsborough Rotary Club discussed honey bees and the idea of creating a sustainable agricultural project. Honey bees became that project and the Hillsborough Rotary Club accepted the challenge.

Countless hours were spend developing the project, learning about honey bees, site location, funding and who would become our partner to maintain, manage and produce honey to sell to the public. .

Boy Scout Troop 1776 seized the opportunity and have been working with Hillsborough resident, Rotarian, & honey bee keeper Frank Martin.

I am happy to inform our followers the honey bees have arrived and now reside in Ann Van Middlesworth Park The project is not complete and ongoing construction and informational signs will be coming in the near future.

The Hillsborough Rotary Club would like to thank the following individuals & business for their contributions to date.
Frank Martin, Agincourt Lumber, Bee Keepers Konkur Vojciech & Merek, York Fence, Central Jersey Nursery, County Classics, Active Disposal, 911 Carting & Septic.

On October 28 and 29, all Hillsborough third-graders received the gift that keeps on giving for a lifetime - a dictionary.  The Rotary Cub of Hillsborough continued its annual tradition this year by presenting each and every Hillsborough third-grader with a Webster's Dictionary.  The children were asked to look up the definition of the word “charity” to help them understand the Rotary Club’s mission, which is “Service Above Self.”

2015 Hillsboorugh Rotary Fair Opens

Posted by John Shockley on Aug 13, 2015

AUGUST 12, 2015

Mother Nature finally cooperated last night and allowed the Hillsborough Rotary Fair to open. The crowds came early as Mayor Doug Tomson and members of the township committee and Rotary club held the people back to cut the opening ribbon.

It was a non-scheduled wristband night and many participates enjoy the extra night. Everyone had a wonderful night. We have FOUR new rides for the young members of our crowd. They will spin your body up & down as they shift you back and forth, HAVE FUN!!!

The new food court was well received and everyone enjoyed the variety.

The Giant 50/50 is over $3000.00. We have two more nights to sell tickets and watch the pot grow. Who knows the lucky winner could bring home over Five Thousand Dollars.

Tonight is one of the scheduled WRISTBAND nights and we are anticipating a larger crowd. My advice come early; enjoy the rides, food, and games.

Don’t forget tomorrow night we are having our Second Annual Fireworks Night. Come early and enjoy the best fireworks display in Hillsborough Township!!

Rotary International 110TH Anniversary

Posted by John Shockley on Feb 21, 2015

Rotary International’s 110th Birthday

Rotary International’s 110th Birthday

February 23 is the 110th anniversary of Rotary International. On this day in 1905, Rotary founder Paul Harris formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Since then, Rotary has continued its commitment to service by providing clean water, improving maternal health, awarding scholarships, fighting diseases, and improving lives around the world.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Rotary’s Polio Plus program. Since the fight to end polio began, 2 billion children have been immunized, 10 million children have been saved from lifelong paralysis and 125 countries have been declared polio-free. For more information about Rotary International and the Polio Plus program, contact your local Rotary Club.

Operation Shoebox Packing Event

Posted by John Shockley on Dec 07, 2014

The Hillsborough Rotary Club would like to thank everyone who took the time from their busy schedule to assist with the packing event for Operation Shoebox. We had such tremendous support from the general public, Hillsborough Interact Club, TD Bank, Team RWB, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and so many others I have to apologize if I didn't mention your organization.

A special thank you to the staff at the Hillsborough Branch of the Somerset Valley YMCA and Kimberly Cole, Executive Manager for allowing us to use their facility.

According to Rob Hirsch, Director, Operation Shoebox we packed a record breaking 1450 boxes. So take a minute and congratulate yourself, you deserve it, and while you reflect on the event, picture the smiles on the members of the armed forces as they open their boxes.

The Hillsborough Rotary Club and Operation Shoebox received a special thank you from Governor Christie, please read below.

Hillsborough Rotary Club Organizes Volunteer Event to Pack Holiday Gifts for Troops Abroad
______

Public Is Invited to Participate in Packing Event at Hillsborough YMCA

Hillsborough, N.J. November 10, 2014… During the holiday season, a package containing favorite foods and toiletries is always a welcomed gift, but never as much as when it is received by a member of the military serving abroad.  The Hillsborough Rotary Club, in association with is Operation Shoebox New Jersey, will help ensure that our troops abroad receive this special gift by organizing the fourth annual Christmas Packing Event on Saturday, December 6, from 10 AM to 2 PM, at the Hillsborough YMCA (19 East Mountain Road, Hillsborough, NJ). Members of the community are invited to participate in this special event.

“The holiday season is a particularly difficult time for military to be away from home and family, “noted Hillsborough Rotary Club President, Anthony Franchini, “and receiving a package from home filled with familiar items goes a long way in keeping up morale.”

“The Rotary’s packing event is not only very organized, it is a fun event for all who participate,” mentioned Rod Hirsch, Operation Shoebox Director. “We receive wonderful feedback directly from the troops about how much they look forward to receiving these packages.”

At last year’s packing event, over 1100 packages containing a wide assortment of foods, treats and toiletries were assembled by over 100 volunteers - both young and old - from Hillsborough and adjoining communities. The individual bags are grouped together into small boxes and then into larger containers for shipment abroad.  The cost of shipping these boxes to the troops is funded by donations from the Hillsborough Rotary and caring members of the public. Cash donations to off-set shipping costs can be made at the event or sent in advance by check to Operation Shoebox, 152 Route 206, Hillsborough 08844.  Donations of appropriate, non-perishable food items, snacks, and toiletries, etc. can be dropped of at the same location.

To participate in the packing event, volunteers need only show up at the Hillsborough YMCA between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM on Saturday, December 6, and Rotary volunteers will provide packing instructions.

Requested items include canned tuna, canned fruit, 1 oz. boxes of cereal, dried fruit, trail mix, granola bars, beef jerky, small bags of pretzels and chips, small tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes, small packets of moist wipes, soap, deodorant, small canisters of powder and small bottles of shampoo.

Military/Veterans Appreciation Day a Fun Day For All

Attendees at Rotary’s Second Annual Military and Veterans Appreciation Day, Saturday, September 20, were treated to an inspiring rendition of the national anthem sung by Hillsborough High School student, Pooja Singh, as a plane circled high above the crowd at Central Jersey Airport towing a 30 X 50 ft. American flag.  The opening ceremonies continued with Operation Chillout Executive Director, Ray Chimileski, delivering the invocation, followed by the Somerset County Pipes and Drums playing a variety of service songs, and concluding with a formal welcome and comments by dignitaries.

Over a thousand attendees, including active military, veterans and their families, as well as the general public, came out for the day’s activities, which included airplane rides offered by Tristate Aviation, and helicopter rides – a crowd favorite - offered by Ocean Helicopter.  There were vintage aircraft and classic cars on display, along with fire and emergency vehicles, a smoke simulator and heavy equipment simulator.

Under the leadership of Joe Spera of the Dunellen-Green Brook Rotary Club, Rotarians from the Hillsborough and Branchburg clubs joined forces to cook and serve a wide selection of food from popcorn to pasta, while the Piscataway Club booth sold soda and water. Information booths manned by the Veterans Administration, VIPER – Veterans in Pursuit of Educational Readings, and Somerset County Library did a brisk business.  Members of Operation Shoebox and Operation Chillout collected donated items for distribution to troops and veterans, as well as monetary contributions. Funds donated by the Berkeley-Heights Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Princeton and the previously mentioned Rotary Clubs, which go to support both Operation Shoebox NJ and Operation Chillout are, are expected to total more than $7,000.

The Rotary Clubs are extremely grateful for the support of many local agencies and businesses, too many to mention here, for their donations of equipment, food, time and money. A special thank you goes to the Raritan Valley Civil Air Patrol Squadron for their handling of both aircraft and vehicular traffic.  Without their help the appreciation day would not have been possible.

Joe Horner District 7510 Voc. Service Award Aug. 22, 2014

Posted on Aug 28, 2014

Vocational Service Award Recipient
Joe Horner
Rotary Club of Hillsborough

The 2014 Vocational Service Award will be presented to Hillsborough Rotarian Joe Horner at the annual Vocational Award Assembly on October 7, 2014 at the Pines Manor in Edison.

Joe was unanimously selected by the Committee, a testament to his involvement in the Vocational Avenue of Service.
Joe has been a small business owner for over thirty years. He is not only fair and understanding of his employees on a business level by providing good working conditions and a very generous benefit package, he is also very compassionate and giving on a personal level. He works alongside his employees in a quiet yet authoritative manner, earning the respect and admiration of all who work for him.

Although he has only been a Rotarian since 2003, he has lived his entire life by the Four Way Test. Rotary has been a forum for Joe to work with people of like minds, ways and ideas in helping people who need it most and to bring hope and unity to communities. He is a real-life hero to many; he is someone that many people count on, and is someone to call a friend.

Joe always focuses on being truthful and fair in how he conducts himself personally and professionally. He is a very busy entrepreneur, but making time for Rotary and District 7510 is something that he is passionate about. Although Joe is pragmatic and wants to get things done, he will always take others' opinions into consideration.
Having been involved in the solid waste management industry for his entire career, Joe is an established and known figure in that industry throughout New Jersey. He has been called upon by larger solid waste corporations for advice and assistance on waste management issues. A proven leader and mentor, Joe has always stayed focused on his employees and his customers, being honest and treating them with respect and courtesy. These traits have created for Joe longstanding relationships throughout his professional life.

Most tellingly, Joe has been an inspiration to all of the Hillsborough Rotarians. "He has helped us all become better and more productive Rotarians," said club president Anthony Franchini. "Joe has lead by example, always the first to work hard and inspire others."

Please join us as we recognize Joe at the Vocational Service Awards Assembly on October 7 at the Pines Manor.

District Governor Elect Hal Daume

“Play It Forward - Second Life Sporting Goods Sale” to Fund
Mobility Assistance Van for Hillsborough Residents

March 29, 2014, Hillsborough, NJ – Giving a second life to that gently used sports gear stored and often forgotten in basements and garages throughout the community can be a home run for Hillsborough.  The Hillsborough Rotary Club hopes to sell that unwanted gear to fund the purchase of a specially equipped mobility assistance van made available free-of-charge to Hillsborough residents.

The Rotary Club released details today of its “Play It Forward – Second Life Sporting Goods Sale.”  The fundraiser, which is the first of its kind in Rotary’s history, launches April 01 with the collection of donated gear at six convenient community locations.   The sale of the equipment to the community is scheduled for May 17 and 18 at the former Hillsborough Cost Cutters location at 390 Route 202 South.

Abed Medawar, Rotary chairperson for the event, stated that, “The program is an important, new addition to the Hillsborough Rotary Club’s fundraising efforts that go toward the purchase of a specially-equipped van that is made available to transport many mobility-restricted residents to their medical and other important appointments throughout the year. The program,” he added, “will provide a perfect opportunity for adults and parents of children exploring new sports, as well as those that have outgrown their current equipment, to save money while helping a worthwhile cause. It’s a win/win for the community.”

Beginning March 29, the Hillsborough Rotary Club will accept tax-deductible donations of gently used sporting goods and equipment, as well as cash donations, at the following six drop off points:

  • Bridgewater Motor Works – 358 Union Ave. Bridgewater NJ – (M-F 8am-5pm)

In addition to Charley "O", a band called TS Project played R&B, Rock, and Jazz all night long. A long time Rotarian, Tony D&Angelo stopped by to sing a Frank Sinatra favorite, Summer Wind.

We would like to thank Flowers by Heaven Scent of Somerville, for donating the red roses for all the special women at the dance, and the staff at Pheasants Landing for the food, and the service they provided to everyone. Hillsborough Club Continues Community Traditions

The annual Memorial Day picnic and other projects are traditions kept by the Rotary Club of Hillsborough.

Sometime around 1960, Harry Smith's brother—and business partner—Elliott introduced him to the members of the Rotary Club of Belle Mead.

He said he joined because, as far as he knew, it was what young businessmen did.

But he quickly became immersed in fulfilling the Rotary International motto, "Service above self," and found himself actively involved in various community service projects undertaken by the club. Soon, he was heading up the Rotary Club's newest efforts: Hillsborough's Bicentennial celebration in 1971 and the Memorial Day community picnic.

"We started that way back when," he said.

Smith is still a member of the club, although it's now the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, and through the decades, as new members joined and others dropped out, the club's activities have continued.

Many residents today best know the club through the annual Rotary Club Fair, a massive undertaking that nets the club thousands of dollars used for local residents in need, providing dictionaries to students, funding scholarships for high school graduates and helping support Rotary district, national and international charitable projects.

The members meet each week at Pheasant's Landing, and while one used to have a sponsor—like Smith's brother—to open the doors, that's not the case these days. Rotary Club of Hillsborough Secretary John Shockley said the club welcomes new members—especially this month, as Rotary International hosts Awareness Month hoping to inform more people about it's many activities.

Hillsborough residents may not know the club has been a major benefactor since the early days of the Community Picnic, when longtime member Fred Quick said the club decided to get its own tent for the event.

"We rented a 60-by-120 foot tent and had the picnic at Docherty Park," he said. Then, club members purchased their own tent—and rented it to others to use, adding the rental fees collected to the club's contributions to local charities.

"We kept doing that until the year a big storm hit during the Fireman's Fair and just destroyed it," Quick said. "We did raise quite a bit of money for our club's support for projects in town."

Both Smith and Quick said they joined because of the business connections—but the club's community projects and focus on helping others has kept them involved through the years.

"Obviously, the camaraderie is part of it, it keeps us going through the rough times," Quick said. But "the meaning of it is to give back."

"You're supposed to think about helping others," Smith said. "People should do service for their community and for their country."

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough counts dozens of local business owners and managers in its membership today—it's grown from those roots in 1955 as the Rotary Club of Belle Mead, with Dix Skillman as inaugural president.

If you'd like to know more about the club, stop by Pheasant's Landing at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings and meet the members.

Rotary Club Members Begin Month-Long Awareness Project

History

Paul Harris

“Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.”
—Paul P. Harris

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

Our ongoing commitment

Rotarians have not only been present for major events in history—we’ve been a part of them. From the beginning, three key traits have remained strong throughout Rotary:
We’re truly international. Only 16 years after being founded, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Today we’re working together from around the globe both digitally and in-person to solve some of our world’s most challenging problems.
We persevere in tough times. During WWII, Rotary clubs in Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Japan were forced to disband. Despite the risks, many continued to meet informally and following the war’s end, Rotary members joined together to rebuild their clubs and their countries.
Our commitment to service is ongoing. We began our fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. By 2012, only three countries remain polio-endemic—down from 125 in 1988.

Notable Rotarians

Rotarians are your neighbors, your community leaders and some of the world’s greatest history-makers:
  • Warren G. Harding, U.S. president
  • Jean Sibelius, Finnish composer
  • Dr. Charles H. Mayo, co-founder of Mayo Clinic
  • Guglielmo Marconi, Italian inventor of the wireless radio and Nobel laureate
  • Thomas Mann, German novelist and Nobel laureate
  • Friedrich Bergius, German chemist and Nobel laureate
  • Admiral Richard E. Byrd, American explorer
  • Jan Masaryk, foreign minister of Czechoslovakia
  • H.E. Soleiman Frangieh, president of Lebanon
  • Dianne Feinstein, U.S. senator
  • Manny Pacquaio, Filipino world-champion boxer and congressman
  • Richard Lugar, U.S. senator
  • Frank Borman, American astronaut
  • Edgar A. Guest, American poet and journalist
  • Sir Harry Lauder, Scottish entertainer
  • Franz Lehar, Austrian composer
  • Lennart Nilsson, Swedish photographer
  • James Cash Penney, founder of JC Penney Co.
  • Carlos Romulo, UN General Assembly president
  • Sigmund Sternberg, English businessman and philanthropist
Ready to make history with us? Get involved.

Since 1955, Hillsborough's Rotary Club has been busy fulfilling the international organization's mandate of "Service above Self," helping local residents in need and participate in larger, international projects.

Watch for members of the local club to talk up the club's many projects during January, which Rotary International has declared Rotary Awareness Month for its more than 34,000 Rotary clubs in 200 countries.

The club, which meets every Wednesday evening at Pheasants Landing Restaurant, welcomes new members to join in its many projects. In 2013, those projects included organizing an airshow at Central Jersey Regional Airport, present dictionaries to all third-grade students in Hillsborough and Manville schools, organize a packing event for Operation Shoebox, and the annual Rotary Fair in August.

Hillsborough Patch will feature stories on the club, its members and history this month to help the awareness project.

2013 Golfing With Guns

Posted by John Shockley on Nov 23, 2013
On November 23, 2013 members of the Hillsborough Rotary Club along with family and friends got a chance to blow off some stream, Literally!  Thanks to the efforts of Greg Burchette the Annual Golfing With Guns went off without a hitch. We traveled to the Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays, Coplay, Pa for an afternoon of fellowship and fun. Everyone who attended had a great time. The weather was perfect and the facilities were well maintained. If you have never shot clay targets I highly recommend giving it a try.  See photo album for additional pictures.

2013 Veterans Appreciation Day Award Ceremony

Posted by John Shockley on Nov 21, 2013
On Wednesday, November 20, 2013 the Hillsborough Rotary Club held the awards ceremony for the Veterans Appreciation Day. The event was sponsored by District 7510. Numerous Rotary Clubs, along with personal and business sponsors made the day very successful. District Governor Tulsi Maharjan presented certificates to the sponsors who attended the ceremony.
The sponsors receiving certificates from District Governor Tulsi were; Hillsborough Rotary Club, Piscataway Rotary Club, Westfield Rotary Club, Innovative Mfg., Audio Cafe, Central Jersey Regional Airport, 911 Septic Pumping & Repair, and Hesco Electric.
The two most important recipients were Operation Shoebox and Operation Chillout. Operation Shoebox received $4103.80 and Operation Chillout received $2703.80. This is small amount of money for two groups that are picking up where the federal government stops. All of the citizens of this great country need to keep these two organizations in our hearts and minds and support their efforts whenever possible. DG Tulsi is predicting over 4000 participants next year including Rolling Thunder.

2013 Philippines Relief

Posted by John Shockley on Nov 18, 2013
For Immediate Release

The Hillsborough Rotary Club in support of District 7510 and Rotary International is asking for the help of all businesses and residents of New Jersey to donate to the disaster in the Philippines.
Super Typhoon Haiyan has devastated parts of the Philippines and they are in a desperate situation from the storm. They are in need of the basic supplies that a human being needs to sustain their lives.  The items that we take for granted.  You can help by donating to SHELTER BOX.
SHELTER BOX is the premier international aid organization that provides emergency shelter and life-saving equipment following disasters such as earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict.
The top priority of many aid organizations is to provide food, water and medical care to help people survive the immediate aftermath of a disaster. Without protection from the elements, survivors are at a higher risk as they await nourishment or medical attention. We recognized that little or no assistance was given in terms of proper shelter to help them through the first few days, weeks and months as they tried to rebuild their lives. In response, Shelter Box developed a solution to help disaster survivors during the critical period following a disaster but preceding reconstruction.
The Hillsborough Rotary Club through our Foundation is asking for your donation to help us purchase SHELTER BOXES for the Philippines. You can donate online at our website which is www.hillsboroughnjrotary.com.  Click on the DONATE button and follow the instructions.
By making a charitable gift to the Rotary Club of Hillsborough Foundation Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, the donor understands that charitable donations are not refundable.

A little competition between the Montgomery Township Seniors and the Hillsborough Township Seniors added with members of the Montgomery Rotary Club and Hillsborough Rotary Club, made for a fun filled morning. When it comes to competition and winning, age, or club affiliations, do not matter, you still have the desire to win. All the participants had a great time. The rumor going around is some of the participants are practicing for next year.

2013 Hillsborough Rotary Golf Outing

Posted by John Shockley on Oct 17, 2013
Neither rain nor threat of tornado could dampen the mood as all golfers, donors, and Gerry Cooney enjoyed a tremendous day. With the 18 contests on each hole, all the raffles, the live and silent auctions, and the great food we received praise from the players, sponsors, and even the golf club for a unique and exciting event. The amazing response will allow us to provide even more support to Billys charity than we expected. To all those who participated and supported the Hillsborough Rotary Club and Billy Biviano we thank you.

ROTARY CLUB OF HILLSBOROUGH HOSTS A FAMILY FUN DAY FOR LOCAL
SPECIAL NEEDS AND AUTISTIC COMMUNITY

The Rotary Club of Hillsborough hosted a Family Fun Day at its annual Fair on Saturday exclusively for the local Special Needs and Autistic Community (SNAC).  The Fair, located in the Hillsborough Promenade, was open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday, beginning on August 13, but on Saturday it was opened early from 2 to 4 p.m. for the special needs and autistic children and their families.
The Rotary Club hosted approximately 424 individuals and their families. Guidance and organizational help for the event was provided by Leonore Johnston Director of Special Services in the Hillsborough School system, Anthony Ferrera,  Hillsborough Township Administrator, a great Autism advocate, and Sherri Marino of the Autism Think Tank in Warren.
Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.  Every year Rotary focuses on a new theme. This year's district theme is “Passion into Action”, and the district is focused on autism - increasing awareness, assisting families and supporting research.
The Fair atmosphere was modified to help provide an enjoyable experience for the special attendees. Loud noises and flashing lights normally associated with fairs were reduced, and unlimited access was provided to the rides and carnival games.
The Family Fun Day was totally free to attendees and their families.  The event was also attended by many local dignitaries who provided a hand including Senator Kip Bateman, Assembly women Donna Simon, Mayor Frank Delcore, Deputy Mayor Doug Tomson and Committeeman Greg Burchette.  Also in attendance was Dr. Tulsi R.
