Special Guest April 8

Our April 8 meeting will bring a special guest.

An Illinois native, Borling was a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, where he was shot down by ground fire. Seriously injured in his crash, Captain Borling spent the next 6½ years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi. Borling was released on February 12, 1973.

Subsequent to his return, Borling was an F-15 Eagle fighter pilot and commander of the "Hat in the Ring" squadron. He was an Air Division commander at Minot AFB, and Head of Operations for Strategic Air Command (SAC) in Omaha. In that position, he directed SAC's support of hostilities in the first Gulf War and Panama and was charged with execution responsibilities for the nation's nuclear war plan. At the Pentagon, he led CHECKMATE, a highly classified war fighting think tank and was Director of Air Force Operational Requirements helping initiate a new family of guided weapons. In Germany, he commanded the largest fighter and support base outside the United States and later served at NATO's Supreme Headquarters in Belgium working directly for the Supreme Commander and Chief of Staff. He was central to the creation of HQ North in Norway and served as Chief of Staff of that integrated NATO/National command.

Borling created Taps on the Walls: Poems from the Hanoi Hilton: a collection of poems he wrote during his time in captivity during the same period as John McCain.

Borling is retired from 33 years of active military services and currently resides in Rockford, IL with his wife, Myrna.

2019 State of the City

Moline Rotary Hosts 2019 State of the City

The 2019 State of the City was held on March 18th at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline. A capacity crowd — formally a joint meeting of the Moline Kiwanis and Moline Rotary clubs — heard reports from Mayor Stephanie Acri, Public Works Director and interim City Administrator J.D. Schulte, Renew Moline CEO and President Alexandria Elias, and City Clerk Janine Hollembaek-Parr.

A presentation of the current status of the I-74 Bridge Project was presented by George Ryan, I-74 corridor manager. He compared the complexity and precision of the project to “building a Swiss watch out in the middle of the river.” He also reminded the room that the traffic challenges we are currently experiencing are the result of the need to compress what would normally be an 8-year timeline for a project of this scope, to 3.5 years.

Hosted by the Moline Rotary and Moline Kiwanis Club at the TaxSlayer Center, notables in attendance were Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher; Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch; Eldridge Mayor Marty O'Boyle; former Moline mayors Stan Leach and Don Welvaert; and Col. Steven Marr, Garrison Commander at the Rock Island Arsenal. Also in attendance were city staff, aldermen and private residents.

FOOD 4 KNOWLEDGE on MONDAY

Monday, January 23rd, will be a Food 4 Knowledge luncheon.

The Food 4 Knowledge luncheon is a week where we as Rotarians take a day from our normal elaborate lunch and instead, enjoy a simple bowl of soup and/or salad. We eat on paper products and we accept a simple meal in turn to give the savings to those that are not as fortunate as we are. Several weeks ago we learned from Alyson Ryser from Moline High School that this program is accomplishing many things for those who have less. We ARE making a difference in children in the Moline School District.

Your contribution to Food for Knowledge can be tax deductible by making a check out to the Moline Rotary Foundation and putting it in the bucket on the food table this coming week.

Living life doing service above self is our mission, giving a child the ability to learn, live and fit in the world is a gift that supports this mission. I look forward to seeing you and partaking in a simple meal that will fill the minds and bellies of many children.

— Tim

District Youth Exchange Students Experience Chicago

Image

[left, Antonia (center)  With Other Exchange Students at Columbia Yacht Club, Chicago]

Youth Exchange Students from District 6420 traveled to Chicago Saturday, September 20th to participate in the annual Rotary Youth Exchange Sailing Lake Michigan event sponsored by the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians - Chicago Fleet. District 6420 students joined over 100 other Exchange Students from Illinois and Michigan to experience sailing on several beautiful yachts owned by the Yachting Rotarians.

RYE-2c-c

Students had a great time getting know one another over lunch on the docks of the Columbia Yacht Club Harbor, and then prepared to board the boats. Unfortunately strong winds and an approaching weather front prompted safety officers and Rotary officials to cancel the outing. Students retreated to the floating home base of the Yacht Club, the MV Abegweit, a huge retired 1940's Canadian passenger ferry. Some students enjoyed a tour of the ship, while others trekked into downtown Chicago.

I just had to share these pics of Sierra Leone with you as they touch my heart so much and I believe will encourage you.  They are the peoples of the Village of Tardi.  They needed funds for seeds for foods, tools to cultivate the soil, and clean water wells for their village where they walk in some areas two hours one way to carry clean water for their families.

Sue Staack and her crew delivered 576 dictionaries to 3rd grades students in the 13 elementary schools in Moline School District. Thanks to all who participated. We’re sure that all who helped found delight in this project.  After receiving their dictionaries the students immediately perused them and began to ask questions or comment on what they had found.  The Rotarians delivering the dictionaries read the Rotary 4-Way Test that had been included inside the front cover.  One teacher told her students to go home and tell your parents what happened today. Rotary Hosts 2014 Literacy Breakfast

Image

Moline Rotary Club once again celebrated its commitment to literacy by hosting the 2014 Literacy Breakfast on Wednesday November 19th at the Butterworth Education Center. School District #40 Principals and their school's literacy program volunteers were invited to join District administrators and Moline Rotarians to highlight and celebrate the efforts by school staff, volunteers and Rotarians to improve the literacy of elementary school students. Attendees spoke of the value of literacy programs such as The Literacy Connection and Moline Rotary's annual dictionary distribution to elementary school children. District Superintendent Dr. Dave Moyer, also a Moline Rotarian, emphasized the importance of literacy and thanked all of those who support literacy in our schools. Keynote speaker Dr. Maryan Wherry (professor at Black Hawk College and Western Illinois University) presented a very interesting review of the history and importance of language and literacy in our world.

Thanks to our Moline Rotary Club Literacy Committee, especially Chair Sue Staack and tutor Butch Trevor for their commitment to Literacy. See photos of this event under Photo Albums / 2014 Rotary Literacy Breakfast.
