Literacy Breakfast
The time and place of our meeting last week were changed to Wednesday at 7:00 AM to have a breakfast to honor all literacy tutors in the Moline School District Several of our Rotary members, school staff and volunteers arrived early at Butterworth Educational Center. Each of the school principals in the District introduced the tutors from their school and briefly described their tutoring activities. Dr. Moyer is a strong believer in public education and believes that strong educators are required to properly guide students. He was pleased to see the number of volunteers primarily helping students with their reading skills. One of the measuring tools is the ACT scores. In the last three years there has been an increase in these scores for the Moline students.
One of the challenges in the district now is the number of non-English speaking students and families. For example, there are 18-20 different languages spoken by the students at Jane Adams alone and 40 different languages in the school system. However, a lot of these students seem to try harder to learn the basic skills.
Butch Trevor, who volunteers at Washington grade school, thanked Dr. Moyer for his remarks, Joe Taylor and his staff for a great breakfast, and Sue Staack for arranging the facilities.
