Green Beret Featured 10 JanOur club meeting January 10th featured a presentation by former Green Beret Bob Seper about his experiences in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam conflict. We wrapped up the meeting with a new member ceremony for Allan Johnson.

Christmas Gifts for Needy FamiliesCelebrating our seventeenth year partnering with nearby Jerry D. Allen Elementary School at Christmas, Rotarians will be delivering bags of goodies for girls and boys on December 15th.

District Gov Craig Hardy Visits 2 September Our South Central Texas Rotary District engages 55 Rotary clubs and leading those clubs involves an annual visit with each club. Next week it is our turn!! District Governor Craig Hardy meets with our Board at 11:00 and addresses the club over the lunch hour. DG Craig's tour started 1 July and suddenly we were flooded with opportunities to serve--and you can look forward to hearing many first-hand accounts of what it meant to be a Rotarian in our disaster response to the Guadalupe River flood and other flooding in our district. DG Craig is a retired health care consultant and his Rotary service includes having been an Assistant Governor, District treasurer, Rotary Leadership Institute chair, District Conference chair and many other roles. He was the Club President of the Year for our District when he led his Rotary Club of San Antonio Northwest. He and his wife Carole are multiple Paul Harris Fellows and members of the Bequest Society. He has degrees from Baylor and Trinity--and is often seen wearing burnt orange as a huge Texas Longhorn fan.

School Supply Drive The last week in July the club will be helping the Center for Refugee Services fill and distribute over 1300 backpacks filled with school supplies for children of refugee families in San Antonio. History of Women in RotaryWomen are active participants in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. “My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01. The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow the admission of women into Rotary clubs, and several close votes at previous Council meetings.

Rotary at the Start of the United Nations
During World War II, Rotary informed and educated members about the formation of the United Nations and the importance of planning for peace. Materials such as the booklet “From Here On!” and articles in The Rotarian helped members understand the UN before it was formally established and follow its work after its charter. Many countries were fighting the war when the term “United Nations” was first used officially in the 1942 “Declaration by United Nations.” The 26 nations that signed it pledged to uphold the ideals expressed by the United States and the United Kingdom the previous year of the common principles “on which they based their hopes for a better future for the world.”

Winning ticket==The Grand Prize is valid on 5, 7 or 8 night Caribbean, Bermuda, Canada, Alaska, & Europe sailings. That cruise is valid for all dates except for the last two weeks of December and is for a balcony cabin on all but the Oasis and Quantum class of vessels.
The “Seller” for grand Prize==The secondary prize is valid on 6, 7 or 8-night Caribbean itineraries and is for an Oceanview stateroom traveling only from September through May excluding the last two weeks of December.
The packages both include taxes and gratuities. Tax liabilities are the responsibility of the winners.
To stimulate giving to the Annual Program Fund for the Rotary Foundation, tickets are available for a $10 donation. Proceeds from the funds go to support District Grants and other good works in the world. The Annual Program Funds must be replenished each year so clubs may have funds for grants to support their projects.

Every hero has an origin story. “I was 10 years old when the entire journey started,” explains Binish Desai. It began with a cartoon called Captain Planet, an animated TV series from the 1990s about an environmentalist with superpowers. Desai can still recite the show’s refrain: Captain Planet, he’s our hero / Gonna take pollution down to zero! “That tagline stuck in my mind,” he says. “I wanted to do something to help Captain Planet.”
Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.
An estimated 500 million people worldwide became infected. Many cities closed theaters and cinemas, and placed restrictions on public gatherings. Rotary clubs adjusted their activities while also helping the sick.
