Oct 12, 2023
Ron Herman is an award-winning educator and Dean of Fine Arts and Communication at Foothill College, where he has been empowering students through visual storytelling for over 25 years. He has photographed for Polo Ralph Lauren and Spiegel, and his work is included in such collections as the Fototeca de Cuba, Kinsey Institute, Snite Museum, and the South Bend Museum of Art. Herman received his MFA from the University of Notre Dame and has lectured on his work and photographic technologies at Cornell, Stanford, and Yale Universities. In 2016, he was awarded a Fulbright to research religious diversity in Senegal, and in 2018-2019 he was an EPIC Community College Faculty Fellow at Stanford University, where he developed innovated programs to internationalize curricula.
Herman believes in the importance of experiencing life as a foreigner and using these unique experiences to learn about other cultures, the world, and our place in it. In 2010, he began taking photo enthusiasts from the US to travel to Cuba to work alongside Cuban photographers and share creative ideas and information. These artistic collaborations have resulted in numerous joint exhibitions and artist lectures hosted by both countries over the years which were highlighted in the media and a short documentary film. His personal interest in Cuban photography has resulted in receiving a research grant, the publication of two books on the subject, and being awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the Cuban Ministry of Culture for organizing 10 years of creative collaborations between photographers from Cuba and the United States. |

Oct 19, 2023
Scott Herhold spent 40 years as a reporter, editor and columnist for the San Jose Mercury News. Among his other duties, he wrote a series called “The Unsolved Crime File,’’ which examined cold cases in Santa Clara County. Herhold was drawn to the Arlis Perry murder in part because his father was a Lutheran minister in Palo Alto at the time it occurred. “It felt like the murder of a cousin,’’ he explains. “It was a rebuke to my father’s faith.’’ Herhold is a graduate of Yale and a father of four grown children. He lives in the Hanchett Park neighborhood of San Jose with his wife, Sarah, where the couple raised their four children. “Murder Under God’s Eye’’ is his first book. ![]() Hidden Villa
Oct 26, 2023
Gianna was born in Chicago and grew up in the Chicagoland area with a love of animals and gardening with family but not much access to nature. As she went to University of Michigan and explored a Veterinarian career, she learned about agricultural science and the need for more sustainable food systems for the planet, people, and the animals. In her undergraduate degree, she studied the impact of composting on soil health on agricultural crops. In this experience, Gianna saw how powerful the intersection of hands-on learning and outdoor education is in transforming the learner. She then went on to study Sustainable Food Systems and Education in a Masters Program at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She moved to California in 2018 to be closer to her family and expand her career opportunities. Gianna brought experience grant-making, grant-writing, and fundraising for government and higher education institutions around sustainable agriculture and environmental education. She served as the Development and Communications Chair on the Hidden Villa Board and brings that experience to her current role as Annual Fund and Development Manager at Hidden Villa. Gianna was first attracted to Hidden Villa as a volunteer planting garlic on her breaks from college. Years later, she was invited to help with strategic planning and serve as a board member. G As a child, she didn’t have the opportunities to interact with the outdoors or nature. When she did have that experience, it changed her ability to learn and thrive in her community. Gianna’s favorite activities at Hidden Villa are watching the kids engage with nature and light up when seeing the farm animals, sometimes for the first time. Gianna strongly believes in Hidden Villa’s ability to transform food systems through outdoor education and providing climate solutions. |
