10,000 Meal Packaging EventI wanted to remind you guys about a fun Rotary service project coming up - the September 12 meal packaging event with the Outreach Program. I have opened this up to the whole district, but I really want a good showing from our club. So please sign up now if you think you can join us. I really need to have people sign up now so that I know there will be enough room and not too many people for COVID restrictions. There are two shifts for two hours each. If you think you can't make it, can you donate a little to help a Rotaractor come and help? Thank you! Here is the link to find out more and register. |

Koby's Swap MeetHere are some pictures from this past weekend's service event: Kobey's Swap Meet. Kobey's Swap Meet hosted its 1st Annual NON-PROFIT Day this past Saturday with over 100 non-profits participating. Thank you to all our Rotarians who made it to the event! |

Rock Climbing Fundraiser - NEED YOUR HELP!Despite having only 12 people attend our rock climbing fundraiser last week, we all still had a fun time. This gym was MUCH better than the last one and even featured several automatic belays (so you can climb on your own). We did not, however, meet our fundraising goal for our upcoming Mexico loft home build - so we still need your help! If you didn't attend the fundraiser and can spare a few dollars, we encourage you to donate (either at the next meeting or via Venmo) toward our $5,000 cost of building the home. Fundraisers only work if we all participate and/or invite friends, and we all need to pull together to do our part! Below are some photos of all the fun: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If any of you are willing to fill that role, even someone currently on the board in another position, please let Sarah D know. |

Mexico Loft Home Build Trip - RESULTSOur group had an amazing time this past weekend in Mexico where we built an entire loft home in under 8 hours for Wendi and her two young children. We worked through the 95+ degree heat and were able to finish ahead of schedule to give this beautiful family a truly life changing gift. Then, in true rotary fashion, after the work was done we treated ourselves to a fun evening out and explored Rosarito Sunday morning before coming home. Check out the video at the link below for a montage of the weekend, and mark your calendars for our next trip scheduled for the third weekend in September! |

Volunteer At Living Coast Discover CenterJoin us on Saturday, January 27th from 9am - 11am while we help plant and paint some new 'pollinator' gardens at the Living Coast Discover Center in Chula Vista. Many of you will recall when the Living Coast came to speak to our club about the work they do for local marine life and ecosystems, and that they're one of the rare undiscovered jewels of San Diego (who knew there was such an aquarium in Chula Vista?). We will be painting and planting things to help them create their pollinator garden in an effort to sustain certain local plants and bees. Please wear gardening/painting clothes and close-toed shoes. After our volunteer event we will have the option to stick around and tour the facility as their free guest. When: Saturday, January 27th from 9am - 11am Where: Living Coast Discovery Center 1000 Gunpowder Point Dr. Chula Vista, CA 91910 We need at least 10 volunteers all the way up to 30, so this would be a great event to bring a prospective Rotarian to. Club Christmas Party RecapOur Club Christmas party was a huge success! Not only did we have almost all club members in attendance, but we managed to raise $250 for our Syrian family so they can have a great Christmas! We also pulled off a fantastic white elephant gift exchange without any hiccups and just a few sore feelings from people who got their dream gift stolen - it happens. The food was wonderful, the jello shots were aplenty, and the fellowship was deep and engaging. All in all, a great event! Thank you again to Jenny for hosting us at her beautiful home. Here are some photos from the night: |

White Elephant Gift Exchange RulesMany of you have asked how exactly a white elephant gift exchange works, so we wanted to lay out the rules: 1. Each player brings one wrapped gift to contribute to a common pool. ~for our game, the gift should be no more than $20ish in value and should aim to be gender neutral (i.e.: no makeup or beard trimmers). 2. Players draw names to determine what order they will go in. 3. Players sit in a circle or line where they can see the gift pile. ~To make things easier, everyone should sit in the order in which they will take their turns. 4. The first player selects a gift from the pool and opens it to make sure everyone can see the gift. 5. The following players can choose to either pick an unwrapped gift from the pool or steal a previous player’s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen in this way can do the same – choose a new gift or steal from someone else. ~To keep things moving along, there are a couple of limits on gift swapping:
6. After all players have had a turn, the first player gets a chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift. Anyone who’s gift is stolen may steal from someone else (as long as that person hasn’t been stolen from yet). When someone declines to steal a gift, the game comes to an end. |

Rotary Fun FactAnnual Rotary Calendar In the annual Rotary calendar many months are designated to emphasize major programs of Rotary International. October is Vocational Service Month. During this period, clubs highlight the importance of the business and professional life of each Rotarian. Special activities promote the vocational avenue of service. Rotary Fun Fact![]() Did you know that the very first Rotary Club in 1905 had no dues? Instead, they agreed that all club expenses would be paid from $.50 fines. In today's dollar, that fine would be just over $13. By 1915 Rotary International was on the verge of bankruptcy and it's then President Frank Mulholland suggested every Rotarian contribute $1 (just over $24 today), and hence the concept of annual dues was born. That $1 raised enough funds to make the organization whole, and thanks to the institution of dues RI has not suffered financially since. With that, ![]() |

Remembering Ground Zero - Rotarians Unite in Response To an Unspeakable Tragedy.Today we remember our nation's great tragedy back on September 11, 2001. The following comes from a Rotary International Magazine expert by Cary Silver from December, 2001: As New York Rotarian Matts Ingemanson headed for the subway on the morning of 11 September, he could not understand why his cell phone was not working. "For some reason, I couldn't make any calls. My phone was completely dead," he recalled. "Then I heard the sirens of firetrucks and police cars." As the train headed downtown, Ingemanson noticed a distraught, disheveled man who told passengers that two planes had crashed into the Twin Towers. "I thought he was a homeless man. No one took him seriously." But it was only a matter of minutes before they did. "When I got out of the subway less than three quarters of a mile from the World Trade Center, I saw a huge cloud of smoke pouring towards me. Crowds of people were running down the street, screaming in fear. I shouted, 'What's happening?' and they shouted back, 'The World Trade building is coming down!'" Mexico Orphanage Trip Recap14 Rotarians came together to volunteer at the Casa Hogar Monte Horeb all boys orphanage in Valle De Guadalupe, MX. We spent all day working in 90+ degree heat to build a much needed staircase and paint the boys' kitchen and chapel. We had lunch with the boys and got to hear their stories about how long they had been there and what their goals in life are. Near the end of the day we presented them with some supplies that all teenage boys need (deodorant, shampoo, etc). As a lot of us know, that type of bonding over a shared love of service is what makes Rotary so meaningful. After a hard day of work we enjoyed a lovey dinner and watched the Mayweathr McGregor fight in Ensenada. Sunday we explored La Bufadora and everyone got home safe and sound. Another fun volunteer trip in the books! ![]() To see photos from our trip, please visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2103429776371141.1073741914.222189114495226&type=1&l=2fb2c6491a |

Sekusilezulu Pre-school Toilet![]() Currently, 76 children under five years of age at the Sekusilezulu Pre-school in South Africa are required to use dangerous and unsanitary "long drop" uncovered pit toilets with no privacy or fall protection. The existing pit toilets are in the open air and facing a main road. Children using the pit toilets are exposed to passers-bys and are most are unwilling to use toilets even when needed. There are currently only two "long drop" toilets available for 76 children and 12 staff members. The Rotary Club of Richards Bay proposed to build a toilet facility which will allow girls to have four private toilet stalls; boys to have three urinals and one toilet; and staff members will have a toilet for each gender. This is a critical infrastructure for this poor community. San Diego Coastal Rotary is partnering with the Mission Valley Sunset Club through a matching Global Grant to support this project. Rotary Moment![]() ![]() On Tuesday two amazing things happened: 1) a dental appointment occurred where a toddler was not terrified nor tortured by a Dentist; 2) networking between Rotarians led to a business transaction. It's great that we have a club with non-traditional meetings, however the benefits of networking between two people who share similar business values, such as the four way test, stretches back to the founding day of Rotary. Though the melding of networking and service may be tricky and historically at times controversial, the reality may be Rotarians are usually great at all avenues of service, including vocational. So next time you're at a Rotary networking function, take it beyond small talk & either try out some of the many diverse services offered by your like-minded colleagues, or lend your expertise, advice, and professional network to a fellow Rotarian in search of new opportunities. Who knows, you may get your money's worth. |

LEAD Youth ConferenceOn October 15 & 16, District 5340 held the annual LEADERSHIP, ETHICS, ASPIRATIONS & DETERMINATION (LEAD) Youth Conference. Every year, SD Coastal Rotary sponsors two students to attend the Conference. We are also proud of our own Jackie & Jessica who put in many hours serving on the LEAD Committee for our District - Jackie as the LEAD Chair for the District, and Jessica as Co-Registrar. After a successful conference at this year's Camp Cuyamaca, Jessica shared this message on Facebook: "A wonderful weekend volunteering at LEAD, a camp for over 130 8th graders across San Diego. So proud that our Rotary district puts on such a powerful event and so grateful to be a part of it."

Story UpdatesI have two great pieces of news to give you that will make you very proud to be a Rotarian.
First, the SD Hands of Peace Summer Program went very well and ended last weekend with a Farewell Celebration that was magical. The 40 Israeli, Palestinian and American teens that met just 18 days before (and went through an amazing transformation) put on a great show for us. Four gave powerful speeches that left no dry eyes but lots of hope. One participant wrote and delivered a phenomenal poem called Dear Neighbor. They also sang, danced, hugged, laughed a lot.... and cried because they new this was the last night with their new best friends and supportive community. It was a very successful program and I suspect some new leaders were 'born'. Know that your Rotary grant donations have made a major difference to these kids and possibly to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

Volunteers from SD Coastal helped with check-in, sign-ups for the different activities, lifejackets, swimming in the ocean, and assisted participants on and off the boats and tubes. A few volunteers even rode on the boats, communicating the riders' hand signals to speed up/slow down to the driver. The list of activities available included boat rides, intertubing, water skiing, and disc rides. We had a huge turnout both from participants and volunteers, and everyone had a great time! Helping people with disabilities make their own music![]() Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.
After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.
