10,000 Meal Packaging Event

I wanted to remind you guys about a fun Rotary service project coming up -  the September 12 meal packaging event with the Outreach Program. I have opened this up to the whole district, but I really want a good showing from our club. So please sign up now if you think you can join us. I really need to have people sign up now so that I know there will be enough room and not too many people for COVID restrictions. There are two shifts for two hours each. If you think you can't make it, can you donate a little to help a Rotaractor come and help?  Thank you! Here is the link to find out more and register.

Koby's Swap Meet

Here are some pictures from this past weekend's service event: Kobey's Swap Meet. This is San Diego's best open air market, attracting over 20,000 shoppers each weekend where various organizations collect used household items, clothing or knickknacks and sell them. Kobey's Swap Meet hosted its 1st Annual NON-PROFIT Day  this past Saturday with over 100 non-profits participating. Thank you to all our Rotarians who made it to the event!

Rock Climbing Fundraiser - NEED YOUR HELP!

Despite having only 12 people attend our rock climbing fundraiser last week, we all still had a fun time. This gym was MUCH better than the last one and even featured several automatic belays (so you can climb on your own).

We did not, however, meet our fundraising goal for our upcoming Mexico loft home build - so we still need your help! If you didn't attend the fundraiser and can spare a few dollars, we encourage you to donate (either at the next meeting or via Venmo) toward our $5,000 cost of building the home. Fundraisers only work if we all participate and/or invite friends, and we all need to pull together to do our part!

Below are some photos of all the fun:

If any of you are willing to fill that role, even someone currently on the board in another position, please let Sarah D know.

Mexico Loft Home Build Trip - RESULTS

Our group had an amazing time this past weekend in Mexico where we built an entire loft home in under 8 hours for Wendi and her two young children. We worked through the 95+ degree heat and were able to finish ahead of schedule to give this beautiful family a truly life changing gift.  Then, in true rotary fashion, after the work was done we treated ourselves to a fun evening out and explored Rosarito Sunday morning before coming home. Check out the video at the link below for a montage of the weekend, and mark your calendars for our next trip scheduled for the third weekend in September!

For just $25, you'll get everything you need to start climbing including the gear (harness/shoes) and a short intro lesson for those who need it. Funds raised from this event will benefit our next service project where we’ll be heading to Mexico to build a loft home for a family in need.

When: Wednesday, March 28th from 6-9pm
Where: Vertical Hold Poway
13026 Stowe Dr, Poway, CA 92064
What: $25 fee gets you everything you need to climb for 3 hours. Vertical hold has both electronic and hand-held belays so you can climb with or without a partner. Please wear athletic clothes and shoes. ...Feel free to bring a water bottle. Must be 13+ year old to participate.
How: Purchase tickets in advance at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/rock-climb-rotray-fundraiser-tickets-43761453686?aff=efbeventtix

This home will allow them to stay warm, dry, and most importantly, safe.

Volunteer At Living Coast Discover Center

Join us on Saturday, January 27th from 9am - 11am while we help plant and paint some new 'pollinator' gardens at the Living Coast Discover Center in Chula Vista. Many of you will recall when the Living Coast came to speak to our club about the work they do for local marine life and ecosystems, and that they're one of the rare undiscovered jewels of San Diego (who knew there was such an aquarium in Chula Vista?).

We will be painting and planting things to help them create their pollinator garden in an effort to sustain certain local plants and bees. Please wear gardening/painting clothes and close-toed shoes. After our volunteer event we will have the option to stick around and tour the facility as their free guest.

When: Saturday, January 27th from 9am - 11am
Where: Living Coast Discovery Center
1000 Gunpowder Point Dr.
Chula Vista, CA 91910

We need at least 10 volunteers all the way up to 30, so this would be a great event to bring a prospective Rotarian to.

For questions please see Tom Bierman at 703-975-0257.

Club Christmas Party Recap

Our Club Christmas party was a huge success! Not only did we have almost all club members in attendance, but we managed to raise $250 for our Syrian family so they can have a great Christmas! We also pulled off a fantastic white elephant gift exchange without any hiccups and just a few sore feelings from people who got their dream gift stolen - it happens. The food was wonderful, the jello shots were aplenty, and the fellowship was deep and engaging. All in all, a great event! Thank you again to Jenny for hosting us at her beautiful home.

"Extra" Service Projects During The Holidays

While not official club sanctioned service projects, if you're looking to volunteer a bit more this holiday season, here are a few events worth checking out:

  • Saturday, Dec 16 10:30am-12pm: Serve Lunch at the San Diego Rescue Mission. The SDRM houses many homeless families going through their transitional program, as well as serves hundreds of thousands of meals to other homeless people throughout the year. They need help serving lunch on a weekly basis. Visit https://www.facebook.com/events/1549268115135360/ for more information and to register.
  • Friday, Dec 15 - Sunday Dec 17: Holiday Baskets with the CRC (Community Resource Center). This large annual event is a "free shopping experience" for many San Diego low-income families. They receive baskets of staple items along with a few fun gifts, and the CRC needs volunteers to help create and distribute the baskets. See http://crcncc.org/integrative-services/holiday-baskets/ for more information.

If you know of any more volunteer events you want to see on this calendar, please email Sarah D. at Sarah.E.Davis@Thrivent.com.

White Elephant Gift Exchange Rules

Many of you have asked how exactly a white elephant gift exchange works, so we wanted to lay out the rules:

1. Each player brings one wrapped gift to contribute to a common pool.
~for our game, the gift should be no more than $20ish in value and should aim to be gender neutral (i.e.: no makeup or beard trimmers).
2. Players draw names to determine what order they will go in.
3. Players sit in a circle or line where they can see the gift pile.
~To make things easier, everyone should sit in the order in which they will take their turns.
4. The first player selects a gift from the pool and opens it to make sure everyone can see the gift.
5. The following players can choose to either pick an unwrapped gift from the pool or steal a previous player’s gift. Anyone who gets their gift stolen in this way can do the same – choose a new gift or steal from someone else.
~To keep things moving along, there are a couple of limits on gift swapping:
  • A present can only be stolen once per turn, which means players who have a gift stolen from them have to wait to get it back.
  • After three swaps, the turn automatically comes to an end (otherwise things could drag on for a long time).
6. After all players have had a turn, the first player gets a chance to swap the gift he or she is holding for any other opened gift. Anyone who’s gift is stolen may steal from someone else (as long as that person hasn’t been stolen from yet). When someone declines to steal a gift, the game comes to an end.

5k Walk/Run Fundraiser RESULTS

Our 5k Fundraiser this past Saturday was a great first-time event with lots of good exposure for our club and nearly $500 raised! Nobody got hurt, almost half of all participants were non-club members, there were LOTS of cute babies, AND we were all done by 10:30. Below are some pictures from the event. Come join us and help clean the beach, followed by brunch at Herringbone in La Jolla.  Street parking is available around the beach area (though sometimes parking can be difficult, so plan on spending a good 5 minutes looking). We'll meetup at the bottom of the staircase on Marine Street.  The cleanup takes between 30 minutes to 45 minutes. People that aren't members of the club are welcome to join the beach cleaning fun!

Support for Las Vegas Shooting Victims

As many of you have heard by now, there was a terrible mass shooting at a music festival in Las Vegas last night. 50+ people were killed and over 400 were injured, with those numbers likely to rise as more information comes in. If you'd like to help, there are several ways you can:
  • Don't spread misinformation. It's easy to hit "share" on social media outlets, but try to verify first.
  • Contact your government representatives if you feel strongly about either side of the gun control debate as that will likely come front and center again. Find out how/who to contact here:
  • Donate blood. While we may not be in Vegas, this is a good reminder about the importance of having blood donations on hand in your city should something like this ever happen here. You can make an appointment to give blood locally at: https://www.mysdbb.org/Appointment/Detail.html
  • Donate money. The National Compassion Fund gives 100% of money donated directly to the victims of mass crime (9/11, Sandy Hook, Pulse Nightclub, and now Vegas). You can view their page here: https://nationalcompassionfund.org/

Rotary Fun Fact

Annual Rotary Calendar
In the annual Rotary calendar many months are designated to emphasize major programs of Rotary International. October is Vocational Service Month. During this period, clubs highlight the importance of the business and professional life of each Rotarian. Special activities promote the vocational avenue of service. Don't really know what a fellow club member dose for a living? Ask!

Rotary Fun Fact

first rotarians

Did you know that the very first Rotary Club in 1905 had no dues? Instead, they agreed that all club expenses would be paid from $.50 fines. In today's dollar, that fine would be just over $13. By 1915 Rotary International was on the verge of bankruptcy and it's then President Frank Mulholland suggested every Rotarian contribute $1 (just over $24 today), and hence the concept of annual dues was born. That $1 raised enough funds to make the organization whole, and thanks to the institution of dues RI has not suffered financially since.

With that,

Remembering Ground Zero - Rotarians Unite in Response To an Unspeakable Tragedy.

Image result for september 11

Today we remember our nation's great tragedy back on September 11, 2001. The following comes from a Rotary International Magazine expert by Cary Silver from December, 2001:

As New York Rotarian Matts Ingemanson headed for the subway on the morning of 11 September, he could not understand why his cell phone was not working. "For some reason, I couldn't make any calls. My phone was completely dead," he recalled. "Then I heard the sirens of firetrucks and police cars." As the train headed downtown, Ingemanson noticed a distraught, disheveled man who told passengers that two planes had crashed into the Twin Towers. "I thought he was a homeless man. No one took him seriously."

But it was only a matter of minutes before they did. "When I got out of the subway less than three quarters of a mile from the World Trade Center, I saw a huge cloud of smoke pouring towards me. Crowds of people were running down the street, screaming in fear. I shouted, 'What's happening?' and they shouted back, 'The World Trade building is coming down!'"

Mexico Orphanage Trip Recap

14 Rotarians came together to volunteer at the Casa Hogar Monte Horeb all boys orphanage in Valle De Guadalupe, MX. We spent all day working in 90+ degree heat to build a much needed staircase and paint the boys' kitchen and chapel. We had lunch with the boys and got to hear their stories about how long they had been there and what their goals in life are. Near the end of the day we presented them with some supplies that all teenage boys need (deodorant, shampoo, etc). As a lot of us know, that type of bonding over a shared love of service is what makes Rotary so meaningful. After a hard day of work we enjoyed a lovey dinner and watched the Mayweathr McGregor fight in Ensenada. Sunday we explored La Bufadora and everyone got home safe and sound. Another fun volunteer trip in the books!

Bridge to Beach

Some of the kids from Refugee Tutoring have been taking swimming lessons over the summer and this event will help teach the kids in how to surf, stand up paddle board and boogie board.  There will be water activities (surfing, snorkeling, SUP) and a BBQ, all volunteers are welcome to join and help supervise a small group of students.  Come out and help with all of the fun festivities.

Message from the coordinator of the event at Out of the Boat Swim:

We anticipate 40 elementary age kids and 20-25 middle school age kiddos so any assistance your group could provide would be awesome! We divide the kids into groups and have them rotate through the activities. We will pair off kids with volunteers for the day so the more volunteers the better!! Volunteers don't necessarily need to know to instruct the water activities- there will be life guards at the stations working with the kids. The event takes place at mission bay.

Sekusilezulu Pre-school Toilet

Currently, 76 children under five years of age at the Sekusilezulu Pre-school in South Africa are required to use dangerous and unsanitary "long drop" uncovered pit toilets with no privacy or fall protection. The existing pit toilets are in the open air and facing a main road. Children using the pit toilets are exposed to passers-bys and are most are unwilling to use toilets even when needed. There are currently only two "long drop" toilets available for 76 children and 12 staff members. The Rotary Club of Richards Bay proposed to build a toilet facility which will allow girls to have four private toilet stalls; boys to have three urinals and one toilet; and staff members will have a toilet for each gender. This is a critical infrastructure for this poor community.

San Diego Coastal Rotary is partnering with the Mission Valley Sunset Club through a matching Global Grant to support this project. More information is available on the Matching Grants Project Page.

Rotary Moment

Posted by Mark Kirkpatrick
story-thumbnail

On Tuesday two amazing things happened: 1) a dental appointment occurred where a toddler was not terrified nor tortured by a Dentist; 2) networking between Rotarians led to a business transaction. It's great that we have a club with non-traditional meetings,  however the benefits of networking between two people who share similar business values,  such as the four way test, stretches back to the founding day of Rotary. Though the melding of networking and service may be tricky and historically at times controversial, the reality may be Rotarians are usually great at all avenues of service, including vocational. So next time you're at a Rotary networking function, take it beyond small talk & either try out some of the many diverse services offered by your like-minded colleagues, or lend your expertise, advice, and professional network to a fellow Rotarian in search of new opportunities. Who knows, you may get your money's worth.

Service Project @ Feeding America

San Diego Coastal Rotary invites you to join us for a volunteer project at the Feeding America San Diego warehouse on Wed, Jan 25th at 6pm.

Volunteers must wear close-toed shoes as we will be working in a warehouse. Depending on what is needed at the time, volunteers are typically asked to help with the following tasks:

  • Filling bags with fresh produce to be later delivered to children in need
  • Sorting food that has been pulled from grocery store shelves to prevent it from reaching the landfill and instead into the hands of families in need
  • Repacking bulk product received by Feeding America
Feeding America San Diego helps feed more than 16,000 children, families and seniors in our local community every week! They are always accepting food donations and volunteers are welcome to bring any donations from with them.

Rotary Holiday Family Adoption

Posted by Chris McCoy

Want to spread a little extra cheer this holiday season?

Our club has adopted a family this holiday season! Thank you to all who have already donated. If you would like to participate, we are still collecting donations for the family.

The family has six children - girls aged 2, 5, 7, 9, and 11, and a boy aged 12. We are looking for everything from pens, pencils, stickers, books, and other kid-friendly items to give to the family. I'm sure they will be grateful for anything we donate.  Jenny has offered to pick up donated items this week, and she will be dropping items off to the family on Saturday Dec. 24 at 10:00 am. If anyone would like to join her, she would love the company.

Please feel free to contact me or Jenny if you have any questions and/or want to participate.

Volunteer with the Ray Griset Boys & Girls Club

story-thumbnail

Rotary District 5340 is hosting a district wide service project at the Ray Griset Boys & Girls Club in Encinitas.

Help show the communities of the West Coast that ‘Rotary’s got their back’ in San Diego by putting your back into service at the San Diego tour stop as part of the Connecting for Good Tour.

Hard working Rotarians, Rotaractors and community members from all over the West Coast are taking the long way ‘round to the Zone Leadership Institute, by way of 23 Rotary Districts in a recreation vehicle making fourteen project stops to meet up with that District’s fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors and community members. SHOW THE POWER OF SAN DIEGO AREA ROTARY CLUBS on November 9th in Encinitas, as the Connecting for Good tour stops at the RAY GRISET BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, where kids from all walks of life meet to learn character and citizenship, have a safe place to hang out, and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Come for a couple hours or stay for the entire day, whatever works best for you! We’ll have a number of projects available to our Rotarians and would LOVE your help:
  • Work hard digging and planting in the half acre urban farm
  • Paint and spruce up the Clubhouse with needed repairs and maintenance
  • Volunteer in the ceramics rooms where kids with autism spectrum and developmental disabilities find a calm and quiet place to learn and participate with others
  • Visit the Center for Healthy Lifestyle, and help prepare the outdoor space for the programs teaching kids about healthy eating, financial literacy, and self-esteem
As part of this wonderful day of service, you’ll enter into the Boys & Girls Club’s NO BULLY ZONE and make the environment one where Club kids feel safe and supported when they are out of school. The Club is longest serving youth organizations in its area having never turned a child away.

If you can’t make it to the Day of Service during the day, join the socializing and networking at a lively happy hour to enjoy the company of friends starting at 5:30pm.  We'll be celebrating all of our wonderful accomplishments at the Boys & Girls Club and can't wait to see everyone!

Our First Little Free Library

SD Coastal Rotary is officially ready to launch our first Little Free Library!

Thank you to the countless members and friends who've helped us make this happen for our community. Most notably, thank you to Kara for all your hard work bringing this idea to life and coordinating every detail including the collecting of the hundreds of books, Chris, hobby carpenter and our club's president, who designed and constructed the first library, and Mari who helped us secure our first location. Thank you to the numerous other individuals who donated their books, money, and time.

Our first library will live in the La Jolla Colony Park, across the street from our meeting location at Leucadia Pizza. It can be found at the North Side of the park, under the pergola between the park and the Verano complex, giving readers a wonderful view while encouraging more foot traffic to this section of the park. Be sure to stop by the neighborhood and check it out. In the meantime, we've got a few photos of the project in progress below for you!

Give to our Club Foundation by Shopping through Amazon Smile

Posted by Kara Dobelis

Have you heard of AmazonSmile? It’s an easy and (almost) effortless way to donate to your favorite charities while you shop without spending a penny more.

Here’s how it works:

Every time you want to shop at Amazon, instead of going directly to Amazon.com you would use our special link: https://smile.amazon.com/ch/45-5447607 and click “start shopping” to shop as usual (we will also have the button on our website). It’s the same Amazon you know and use; same products, prices, and services. The only difference is, when you order through our special link, Amazon donates a portion of your eligible order to our Foundation, no extra cost to you. How awesome is that?! Anyone can use this link so please share with everyone you know!

So be sure to save our link so that you have it handy anytime you shop on amazon. If you don't have the link available at the time, you can always visit smile.amazon.com and search for San Diego Coastal Rotary Foundation.

Photos from Service Project @ Orphanage in Mexico

We had an amazing trip to Ranchos de Los Ninos Orphanage, an orphanage supported by the Corazon de Vida Foundation in Valle de la guadalupe, Baja, Mexico. Roughly 20 volunteers from the San Diego Coastal Rotary Club and one of the Bay Area Rotary Clubs split into 3 groups. One group prepared lunch, and another facilitated arts & crafts activities for the kids, while another group painted rooms in the dormitories. After a rewarding day of work, we enjoyed the view from one of the wineries in the valley and had a delicious meal at a local restuarant. We stayed the night at a hotel in Ensanada and spent our Sunday on the beach playing volleyball and soaking up the sun before returning home to San Diego/San Francisco. Everyone had a great time and their hard work was much appreciated! Thank you to the numerous Rotarians who either participated in or supported this great project! A special thank you goes out to Tom Bierman and the Corazon de Vida Foundation for coordinating!

Model UN

Posted by Fernanda Torres Garcia on Aug 25, 2016
Our club has been a strong supporter of the international teams that participate in Rotary District's Model UN (MUN 5340). By aiding in the sponsorship of several rotary clubs, member Fernanda Torres has helped bring over 12 teams so far. This year, the Dominican Republic will participate in the Rotary Model United Nations D5340, so Fernanda is travelling to Santo Domingo to meet with the DGE and scout for another team. Thank you Kevin Cahill for leading this project and thank you to Bertha de La Fuente and the Coronado Binational RC for sponsoring this team.

Story Updates

Posted by Jenny Parker on Jul 31, 2016
I have two great pieces of news to give you that will make you very proud to be a Rotarian.
First, the SD Hands of Peace Summer Program went very well and ended last weekend with a Farewell Celebration that was magical. The 40 Israeli, Palestinian and American teens that met just 18 days before (and went through an amazing transformation) put on a great show for us. Four gave powerful speeches that left no dry eyes but lots of hope. One participant wrote and delivered a phenomenal poem called Dear Neighbor. They also sang, danced, hugged, laughed a lot.... and cried because they new this was the last night with their new best friends and supportive community. It was a very successful program and I suspect some new leaders were 'born'. Know that your Rotary grant donations have made a major difference to these kids and possibly to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

The second story I have for you is about a petite Iranian-American nurse who you know well (Fary Moini). Since she gave us a talk about building schools in Afghanistan three weeks ago, she has been busy on a wild adventure. She has accompanied a very cute but sick little boy (Yahya) with a serious congenital heart condition from a small village in Afghanistan through Turkey (where there was just a major coup to overthrow the government) and into Israel. There, she arranged for a private charity to perform life saving open heart surgery for Yahya on Sunday. Amazing! Here's the best part for me: the surgeons were a Jewish Israeli and a Christian Ethiopian; the anesthesiologist was Palestinian. The entire surgical team has donated their time for this little boy they didn't know, thanks to Fary. Yahya is doing very well in recovery.  People from all over have been donating to Yahya and his family on hearing the story. Of course, along the way, Fary has met and formed alliances with the head of the hospital, Rotary DGs, politicians, ambassadors and reporters. Looks like this is turning into a big news story you may hear again.

Photos from the Blind Ski Clinic

San Diego Coastal Rotary Club members and friends volunteered at the SDMBBSC (San Diego Mission Bay Boat and Ski Club) monthly Blind Ski Clinic on Fiesta Island last weekend. Volunteers from SD Coastal helped with check-in, sign-ups for the different activities, lifejackets, swimming in the ocean, and assisted participants on and off the boats and tubes. A few volunteers even rode on the boats, communicating the riders' hand signals to speed up/slow down to the driver. The list of activities available included boat rides, intertubing, water skiing, and disc rides. We had a huge turnout both from participants and volunteers, and everyone had a great time!

A huge thank you to Fary Moini for visiting with us this week! In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, Fary Moini of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club has dedicated her life to educate young girls and boys in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. What an inspiration it was to see how the passion to make a difference in the world combined with the ability of Rotarians can transform a generation in Afghanistan. Little Free Library

SD Coastal is in the process of starting its own Little Free Library! We hope to place at least two of these by the end of the year, but we need your help! Please consider donating any used or new books (any type -- childrens, adult, cooking, etc) and bring to Kara at the upcoming meetings. Further details including location and type of library we want to build are still in the works. Our plan is to have a service project day where we build the houses and place them in the community.

Helping people with disabilities make their own music

Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.

After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

Finding Safe Haven

For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen.

After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.

Saving lives in Ghana

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga.

India celebrates three years without polio

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."

The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.
