We had 12 participants show up at The Stoney Creek Battlefield Park on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, at 4 pm.

Both 2056 and 5406 are now at The FIRST FRC World Championship in Houston, Texas, April 29 to May 2, 2026, where they will play on one of NINE fields with teams from all over the world

 The FIRST Robotics Ontario Championships at the Niagara Convention Centre were held April 16-19th, 2026

Team 2056 Orchard Park Robotics and Celt-X5406 Bishop Ryan Robotics were both competing on the “SCIENCE” Field.

After the 50 Qualifying Matches Orchard Park was ranked 2nd and Bishop Ryan was ranked 7th at the end of Saturday.

Sunday morning Simbotics 1114 picked OP 2056 and 7712 to form Alliance 1 and 4476 picked Celt-X5406 and 9562 to form Alliance 3 to go into the Championship round robin.

During the round Robin rounds Alliance 1 went undefeated and won the Science Field in 6 games.  Alliance 3 won three matches and lost in Match 13 against Alliance 2, which then went on to lose to Alliance 1.

Team 2056's Alliance then went on to defeat the Technology field in two matches and take home the Ontario Provincial Championship.

On Thursday, November 20th, members and family of The Rotary Club of Hamilton Stoney Creek helped collect Food Bank donations at The Gage Park CPKC Christmas train stop and free concert.

There's an article coming out in the February 20 edition of The New York Review of Books discussing the recent polio outbreak in Syria and what it means. 

Syria’s Polio Epidemic: The Suppressed Truth. One way to measure the horrific suffering of Syria’s increasingly violent war is through the experience of Syrian children. More than one million children are now refugees. At least 11,500 have been killed because of the armed conflict,1 well over half of these because of the direct bombing of schools, homes, and health centers, and roughly 1,500 have been executed, shot by snipers or tortured to death. At least 128 were killed in the chemical massacre in August.

In the midst of all this violence, it is easy to miss the health catastrophe that has also struck Syrian children, who must cope with war trauma, malnutrition, and stunted growth alongside collapsing sanitation and living conditions. Syria has become a cauldron of once-rare infectious diseases, with hundreds of cases of measles each month and outbreaks of typhoid, hepatitis, and dysentery. Tuberculosis, diphtheria, and whooping cough are all on the rise. Upward of 100,000 children are stigmatized by leishmaniasis, a hideous parasitic skin disease that flourishes in war. Many of these diseases have already traveled beyond Syria’s borders, carried by millions of refugees. Five million more children have been forced out of their homes but are still living within Syria, increasingly vulnerable to early marriage, trafficking, and recruitment as child soldiers.

And now polio is back. Since May, Syrian doctors and international public health agencies have documented more than ninety cases of polio in seven of Syria’s fourteen administrative districts, or governorates: Deir Ezzor, Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Damascus, al-Hasakeh, and Ar-Raqqa. At an average age of just under two, most victims are—or used to be—literally toddlers. Few were fully vaccinated. None has had treatment to prevent paralysis from becoming permanent. All are from areas long opposed to the Assad regime, which reflects the political dimension of the outbreak. Not a single case has occurred in territory controlled by the government.

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011.

To mark this historic triumph -- reached after a decades-long battle against polio -- Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."

It's national hug day, so why not give somebody a hug and a compliment!

This according to Wikipedia:

National Hug Day or National Hugging Day is an annual unofficial event devised by Rev. Kevin Zaborney now residing in Caro, Michigan USA. It occurs on January 21 but is not a public holiday. The day was launched on January 21, 1986 in Clio, Michigan, USA. There are reports of it being marked in some other countries. The idea of National Hug Day is to encourage everyone to hug family and friends more often. Zaborney cautions to ask first if one is unsure of the response. Whether you hug a family member or a friend or a stranger, the mental and physical health benefits are the same.

In the fall of 1900, Paul P. Harris met fellow attorney Bob Frank for dinner on the north side of Chicago. They walked around the area, stopping at shops along the way. Harris was impressed that Frank was friendly with many of the shopkeepers.

Harris had not seen this kind of camaraderie among businessmen since moving to Chicago in 1896. He wondered if there was a way to channel it because it reminded him of growing up in Wallingford, Vermont. Harris eventually persuaded local businessmen to join him in a club for community and fellowship. His vision laid the foundation for Rotary.

“The thought persisted that I was experiencing only what had happened to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of others in the great city … I was sure that there must be many other young men who had come from farms and small villages to establish themselves in Chicago ... Why not bring them together? If others were longing for fellowship as I was, something would come of it.”

President Norm Watson presents a cheque for $1000 to Stoney Creek Food Bank Chair Wilf Rogers and his wife Susan to help those in need.

The Rotary Club of Stoney Creek were proud to host Stoney Creek Food Bank Chair Wilf Rogers and his wife Susan at our breakfast meeting. Our club presented a donation of $1000 to help those in need through the Holiday season and beyond.

Wilf and Susan, along with a dedicated group of volunteers work tirelessly to make sure people in our community do not go hungry. the Stoney Creek Food Bank expects to distribute about 300 Christmas boxes this year.

Wilf told our members that the Food Bank saw 138 new clients between January and October.

In addition to food, the Stoney Creek Food Bank provides toys, games, books, and personal items to children and families. 

The need in Stoney Creek continues to be great and The Stoney Creek Rotary Club is pleased we could help support the Food Bank again this year.

Apparently November is full of international days that are focused on some of The Rotary Foundation's Key Areas of Focus: Maternal and Children's Health and Supporting Education. 

On 14 December 1954, the General Assembly recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. It recommended that the Day was to be observed also as a day of activity devoted to promoting the ideals and objectives of the Charter and the welfare of the children of the world. The Assembly suggested to governments that the Day be observed on the date and in the way which each considers appropriate. The date 20 November, marks the day on which the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989.

The Declaration of the Rights of the Child (1959) passes 10 principals that every country should follow:

1. The child shall enjoy all the rights set forth in this Declaration. Every child, without any exception whatsoever, shall be entitled to these rights, without distinction or discrimination on account of race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, whether of himself or of his family.
2. The child shall enjoy special protection, and shall be given opportunities and facilities, by law and by other means, to enable him to develop physically, mentally, morally, spiritually and socially in a healthy and normal manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity. In the enactment of laws for this purpose, the best interests of the child shall be the paramount consideration.
3. The child shall be entitled from his birth to a name and a nationality.
4. The child shall enjoy the benefits of social security. He shall be entitled to grow and develop in health; to this end, special care and protection shall be provided both to him and to his mother, including adequate pre-natal and post-natal care. The child shall have the right to adequate nutrition, housing, recreation and medical services.
5. The child who is physically, mentally or socially handicapped shall be given the special treatment, education and care required by his particular condition.
6. The child, for the full and harmonious development of his personality, needs love and understanding. He shall, wherever possible, grow up in the care and under the responsibility of his parents, and, in any case, in an atmosphere of affection and of moral and material security; a child of tender years shall not, save in exceptional circumstances, be separated from his mother. Society and the public authorities shall have the duty to extend particular care to children without a family and to those without adequate means of support. Payment of State and other assistance towards the maintenance of children of large families is desirable.
7. The child is entitled to receive education, which shall be free and compulsory, at least in the elementary stages. He shall be given an education which will promote his general culture and enable him, on a basis of equal opportunity, to develop his abilities, his individual judgement, and his sense of moral and social responsibility, and to become a useful member of society.
   The best interests of the child shall be the guiding principle of those responsible for his education and guidance; that responsibility lies in the first place with his parents.
   The child shall have full opportunity for play and recreation, which should be directed to the same purposes as education; society and the public authorities shall endeavour to promote the enjoyment of this right.
8. The child shall in all circumstances be among the first to receive protection and relief.
9. The child shall be protected against all forms of neglect, cruelty and exploitation. He shall not be the subject of traffic, in any form.
   The child shall not be admitted to employment before an appropriate minimum age; he shall in no case be caused or permitted to engage in any occupation or employment which would prejudice his health or education, or interfere with his physical, mental or moral development.
10. The child shall be protected from practices which may foster racial, religious and any other form of discrimination. He shall be brought up in a spirit of understanding, tolerance, friendship among peoples, peace and universal brotherhood, and in full consciousness that his energy and talents should be devoted to the service of his fellow men.

SAVING MOTHERS AND CHILDREN

At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Our projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs.

SUPPORTING EDUCATION

Sixty-seven million children worldwide have no access to education and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

One of The Rotary Foundation's (TRF) key areas of focus is Water and Sanitation. Within this area, TRF enables Rotarians to ensure that people have sustainable access to water and sanitation by:

• Strengthening the ability of communities to develop, fund, and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems;
• Supporting programs that enhance communities' awareness of the benefits of safe water, sanitation and hygiene;

The Rotary Club of Stoney Creek is committed to promoting sanitation and hygiene through support of Connecting Countries, Adopt-a-School (http://connectingcountries.net/), which provides safe and sanitary latrines for schools in Kenya. It should be noted though, that there are many other fantastic organizations as well doing good work in this area. Corrine Schuster-Wallace posted a great article today in Raise The Hammer highlighting an innovative future of sanitation. While not a Rotary project, is an excellent example of sustainability when it comes to water and sanitation.

Our semi-annual Fall Road Cleanup on October 20 was a smashing success!! As always, we spent an hour on a Sunday morning cleaning up King St between Centennial Parkway and Queenston Rd, getting a healthy dose of exercise while we were at it. Wearing our bright and shining yellow Rotary vests, we continue to get positive feedback from members of the community as they drive by. To participate in the spring, stay tuned for more information. The spring road cleanup will take place during April 2014.

This year we were at the Winona Peach Festival again and the weather was gorgeous! Serving perogies, peach crepes and frozen yogurt, we raised over $14,000 for our community. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us. See you again next year!

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Stoney Creek, we would like to thank you for making both Impact Day and Hunger Awareness Week successful events that make a tangible difference in our community. Through the money we raised, we are able to continue to fund some of our local projects which improve our community and the life of its residents.

The food we collected through Hunger Awareness Week went straight to the Stoney Creek Community Food Bank. The Food Bank’s supplies are running low as all of the Christmas donations are running out, and the food drive provided a much needed boost to their food stocks. If you were not able to contribute during Hunger Awareness Week, we would like to urge you to consider making a donation as hunger is an issue all year round.

Without you we would not be able to make such an impact.

Today we picked up the first batch of food collected during Hunger Awareness Week in support of the Stoney Creek Community Food Bank thanks to the students at the Ontario Dental Education Institute in Ancaster. The school of 32 students collected 4 overflowing boxes of food for our community. 

The student council adopted a creative approach to collecting food this year. During Hunger Awareness Week, students who brought a non-perishable food item could wear casual clothing for the day instead of their school uniforms. This resulted in 100% participation and a huge community impact!

Thank you to all of the students at the Ontario Dental Education Institute for such an amazing contribution!

For everyone who is collecting food during Hunger Awareness Week for the Stoney Creek Community Food Bank, we will be coming by on Monday morning to pick up all of the food items (and books if you chose to collect those as well). The Stoney Creek Community Food Bank is very low on food supplies, so they are looking forward to the food donations everyone is collecting.

Last weekend was PETS 2 (President Elect Training Seminar), part 2 of 2 of Rotary's leadership training weekend. While I'm not going to be club president next year, it was an excellent experience that is highly recommended for incoming club presidents. Besides highlighting skills like conflict resolution, effective club meetings, membership and energizing your club, it's a great time meeting other president-elects from neighbouring clubs.

Keynote speakers included David Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Stephanie Urchick, Trustee of the Rotary Foundation. Both were speaking of the power of Rotary as an international organization to create change in the world. What better place to sell Harley Davidson raffle tickets and talk about Rotary than at the International Spring Motorcycle show? We are there all weekend (March 16 and 17), so if you are in the neighbourhood and like bikes, come say "Hi".

The traffic was very busy around the booth yesterday and we can expect more of the same today since it is nice and chilly outside! There are only 3,500 tickets altogether and we're on our way to selling out , so get your tickets while they're hot!

This year we are launching our first ever Hunger Awareness Week Food Drive in support of the Stoney Creek Community Food Bank.

In order to maximize our collective impact and raise as much food as possible, we are looking for retailers and small businesses to partner with us by allowing their customers to drop off non-perishable food items at their place of business. There is no cost to you; we’re just looking for local businesses where customers can drop off non-perishable food items. We would love to have as many of our fellow chamber members be part of this event as we continue to find ways to build up our community.

This morning we met at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 285 Nash Rd N in Stoney Creek. We had our usual breakfast and heard a presentation from Habitat for Humanity Hamilton CEO Bob McConky and toured the facilities where they have been since 2006.

The Rotary Club of Stoney Creek was at the Ideal Home Show in Hamilton this weekend selling tickets for our 2012 Harley Davidson Switchback.

Look for us next at the Toronto International Spring Motorcycle Show March 16th and 17th. 

The Rotary Club of Stoney Creek and The Christmas Show teamed up this past November to help support local charities in their efforts to keep those in need warm this winter.

During The Christmas Show, November 23 -25^th, the operators of the show Premier Consumer Shows were offering a discount on the admission price with the donation of hats, scarves and gloves or mittens.  Over the course of the three days, Show manager’s Greg Davies and Karen Halstead presented the Rotary Club of Stoney Creek with 5 boxes of warm winter wear to be distributed.

The Rotary Club of Stoney Creek was an exhibitor at the show with the 2012 Harley-Davidson Switchback Raffle.  The bike looked excellent on display at this well attended show.

With pride and appreciation these items were presented to the Good Shepherd Centre for distribution to the other groups that they support, Mary’s Place, Martha’s House and the community clothing program through the Good Shepherd Centre.

The guest speaker for February 17 was Cam Rothwell of the Burlington Central Rotary Club and he was giving an update on the work of the Samaritan Foundation in the Dominican Republic. He was also presented with a cheque from our Club for $1000 to be used for that project.

SHRED-A-RAMA

We held this event on Saturday November 5th from 9am-1pm.

Our club will be again be holding a shredding fundraiser so we can continue our good work supporting organizations in our local community and around the world in the new year.  Come back to our site to confirm the exact dates and times.

This November Governor-General David Johnston, in collaboration with the Rideau Hall Foundation launched My Giving Moment (www.mygivingmoment.ca). The goal of the campaign is to create a more caring Canada. To quote his Excellency:

The Road Clean Up took place on Sunday October23rd. We had another successful clean up of King Street.

Our club participated in the Winona Peach Festival held Friday August 26th, 2011 to Sunday August 28th, 2011.  The weather was great, and we would like to thank all of the volunteers who made this event possible.  The perogies and peach crepes were a big hit!
