On Saturday January 27th, 2018 Baconfest was held at the Elizabeth Peratovich Hall in downtown Juneau. Juneau’s best Catering and restaurant businesses came together to celebrate bacon and face off in a culinary competition. Each of the dishes featured bacon in some form.  All attendees reaped the benefit of this friendly competition and like most attendees, even Mayor Ken Koelsch admitted that he couldn't decide which was his favorite dish.

The Flustered Cluckers managed to slip in many bacon references as they serenaded the crowd with the great vibes of their iconic music!  Congratulations to Bryce Pilney and Christina Lara the winners of the Breeze-In sponsored the Bacon Eating Contest!  The Breeze-In delicious custom smoked bacon went down very quickly!

When all of the votes were counted, V's Cellar Door took home 1st place in the sweet category with their bacon infused crepe brûlée, bourbon caramel sauce and candied smoked bacon bits. Four Plates in Frontier Suites won the savory competition with their Peruvian empanadas filled with cream cheese bacon filling and dipped in bacon parmesan sauce. The Timberline Restaurant took second in the sweet category with their bacon cotton candy with Jack Daniel's Bavarian cream and bacon dust, and the Sandpiper Cafe was the runner up in the savory category with a bacon zucchini soup topped with Asiago cheese and pork belly crouton.

The Professional's Choice Award went to the Sandpiper Cafe for their Coffee Crème brûlée with candied bacon and orange zest.

This was a great fundraiser for Glacier Valley Rotary and we would like to thank all of our Purveyors for treating us to their spectacular tasty bacony delights!

So, a Hearty Thank You goes out to: Gla-Scholl Ice, Breeze-in, El Sombrero, Four Plates, Randy’s Rib Shack, Suwanna Café, Barnaby Brewing, TK Maguires, Sandpiper Café, Abby’s Catering, Hangar on the Wharf, Baranof Catering, Timberline Restaurant, McGivney’s, and V’s Cellar!  They all put in a lot effort and we really appreciate them!

We also would like to thank the Juneau Radio Center for their Fabulous Promotion of our event and Alaskan Brewing for sponsoring with their delicious Beer!

The Juneau Housing First Project, construction of a 32 permanent supportive housing units to house Juneau's homeless population is scheduling for completion June, 2017. The project will provide safe and secure housing for "residents in order to facilitate dignified lives, a healthy community, and will provide a significant costs savings" to the Juneau community.

The City of Juneau has prioritized taking steps towards accommodated the chronic homeless in our community. 2016-2017 efforts through our local City and Borough as well as the Juneau Community Foundation has supported efforts for a new $7.3 million project which will open it's doors in late 2017.

The project has broad community support through the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation, The City And Borough of Juneau. Tlingit-Haida Housing Authority, the Juneau Foundation, the Juneau Homeless Coalition, Local design professionals, and others. With a history of projects relevant and vital to our community, the combined Rotary clubs of Juneau see an opportunity to contribute and leverage this effort and dedicate our 2017 efforts together.

Although the doors of the facility may open in June, the secondary layer of need lies in the facility support such as equipment and furnishings. Rooms without beds do not make a home.

The four Rotary Clubs of Juneau and Rotaract Club are combining their efforts together. Each club will take a leadership role in insuring the success of this project.

• The Juneau Gastineau Rotary Club will initiate project organization and writing of the grant.

• The Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary Club will be a liaison between the Rotary Clubs and the community leadership, as well as structure the financial and report keeping as part of the grant stewardship.

• The Juneau "Downtown" Rotary Club and Juneau 58' Innovators will organize the volunteers and work efforts.

All club's will also donate funds towards the project which were matched by Rotary District 5010.

With any non-profit project, such as the construction of housing, the simple construction is a financial challenge. The building is fantastic but is also dependent on the secondary level of support, fixtures and furnishes that will make it home. We've identified furnishing and will be installing 32 beds, on August 26th, to support the completion of this project as a wonderful community outreach gesture that is both within our combined resources and within the list of needs to help make this project operational.

The tri-club project to provide Christmas food boxes to needy families was a huge success!  With the help of the Salvation Army, Coast Guard volunteers and many local donors, members of all three local Rotary clubs joined together to prepare food boxes for over 300 families.  Read about the effort in the Juneau Empire here:  http://juneauempire.com/local/2015-12-20/photo-christmas-dinner-boxes.  Kudos to Rotarians who came out for box packing, bell ringing, Christmas party meeting and other projects to help make the holidays bright.

September 11 Ceremony
The Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary Club will be hosting the ceremony commemorating the events of September 11th and honoring Juneau’s first responders at the September 11th Memorial at Riverside Rotary Park.  The ceremony will begin with guests gathering at the Memorial just off the parking lot at 9:40am.  The formal part of the ceremony commences shortly after and will conclude by 10:15am.
As a community and witness to that event, it is important that we remember what transpired that day, how we felt, and recognize our response to it-  the sense of community, the recognition of our first responders, and the way we pulled together to get through something that changed many lives.
We encourage people to take time on Sunday, September 11th to share a few moments and memories with each other, as a community out at the Memorial site,
as part of our promise to “Never Forget.”
For more information about the ceremony, please contact

Our Annual Tri-club Food Drive will be from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, March 12th.  GVR will be at Super Bear.
Nearly 105,000 Alaskans (roughly 1 in 7) struggle with hunger.  Juneau alone has 3.530 food insecure people.
Food Insecurity refers to the USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited to uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods.
If you can’t participate in the event, please consider making a donation and club members will shop for you.  Charlene will be taking donations at each Wednesday meeting as well as circulating a sign-up sheet.

As previously announced, the largest scholarship that the Glacier Valley Rotary Club awards this spring will be named the “Jamie Parsons Scholarship”.  The scholarship will be awarded to our highest scoring high school recipient.  When we made the previous announcement, we set the deadline for accepting donations based on the need for the scholarship committee to be able to get the applications distributed to the schools by late January.  Because of several factors, we are extending the deadline for submissions to January 31st.   Many thanks go to Scholarship Co-chair Stephen Beedle and Treasurer Sheri Vidic for being willing to do the extra last minute work necessary to facilitate this.
So, if you agree that this is a great way to honor our friend and fellow Rotarian, please mail a check or contact Sheri Vidic to have your account billed by January 31st.  If you are going to mail a check, will you also please send Sheri an email letting her know the amount (in case it doesn’t arrive on time)?

In July of this year, the three Rotary club presidents of Juneau met for a planning session for their year. In this meeting they agreed that they would like to make an extra effort for the End Polio Now campaign. A Tri-Club Run/Walk was suggested as a way to involve Rotarians and raise awareness for this issue and a preliminary goal of raising $1,500 to $2,000 was set. Fast  forward to the end of September and the plans for the Run/Walk were well under way! Then, a  call was made to Juneau Glacier Valley Rotarian Richard Burns to solicit help in publicizing the Run/Walk on his and wife Sharon's radio stations. After agreeing to start blanketing the airwaves about the Run/Walk, Richard volunteered another idea for raising awareness and money to help in the fight to eradicate polio. He suggested a Rotary Radio Day!

So, on World Polio Day, Saturday, October 24th, 2015 Juneau Gastineau, Juneau Downtown, and Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary clubs held an Inaugural Run/Walk and replaced all of the On Air staff for KINY radio from 8 in the morning until 6 at night. Rotarian Disc Jockeys spun the tunes, talked about Polio, and auctioned off many donated items. Matching challenges were issued and answered, and donations flooded in throughout the day! The Run/Walk saw stormy weather abate early on the morning of the event; then, seventy people participated in a group photo and hit the trail for the Run/Walk under sunny skies. After the Run/Walk, snacks were provided and a short speech by event organizer Glacier Valley Rotarian Keith Hermann enlightened a very receptive audience about the need for ending polio now.Juneau Rotarians rose to the challenge with both their pocket books and volunteer hours. Even members who were traveling or otherwise couldn't participate made donations that helped the success of the day! By the end of the day, $18,000 was raised to support the fight for the eradication of Polio. And with the match by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, these funds will swell to an impressive $54,000! These funds will be donated to The Rotary Foundation Polio Plus Fund. Rotarians in Juneau are very thankful for the support of their community!

Roger Crawford, April 22, 2015:  Driven to achieve his dream of becoming a Hall of Fame athlete while living with a physical challenge affecting all four limbs, Roger Crawford knows what it takes to redefine the possible!  Although born with ectrodactylism, a rare birth defect, Roger became the only athlete with four impaired limbs to compete in a NCAA Division I sport and also became a Hall of Fame Division I athlete.  Sports Illustrated recognized Roger as one of the most accomplished physically challenged athletes in the world,” and in 2013 he was selected as the winner of the ITA Achievement Award, presented by The International Tennis Hall of Fame, the highest honor bestowed by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
After achieving immense success as a Hall of Fame athlete, Roger went on to inspire audiences worldwide, eloquently sharing the principles he has livedperseverance, unshakable optimism, and overcoming adversity.
Roger has been featured on Larry King Live, Good Morning America, CNBC, and many other prominent television programs. His life was the basis for an Emmy award winning movie entitled In a New Light
Walter Bond, April 29, 2015Walter's passion for personal development has been anchored by his professional basketball career. Bond's college basketball career did not say NBA at all.  His strong will, his ability to motivate his teammates and his can-do attitude helped him become a nationally recognized college player. As a reserve 6'5" shooting guard from the University of Minnesota, he was not drafted by an NBA team.  Unfortunately, Walter Bond suffered a broken foot twice during his senior year at the very time when scouts were reviewing prospective players for the NBA draft. Walter’s belief and his confidence in himself were put to the test. His dream of a professional career was in jeopardy. However, Walter refused to give up on his dreams.
Only hard work, dedication and commitment got him into the NBA where he enjoyed an eight year career, playing for the Dallas Mavericks (1992/93), Utah Jazz (1993/95) and Detroit Pistons (1994/95).   It was while playing in the NBA that he learned peak performance truths that he has also applied to a successful speaking career.
Now a motivational speaker, Bond is passionate about sharing his 31 Truths to Boost Peak Performance.   He is also the host of the Food Network series Giving You The Business, which premiered in April 2013.
Max and Haley Mertz had a great time at Project Amigo for their workweek March 7-14.  Glacier Valley Rotary generously donated $2,000 for the purchase of mini-libraries for schools that Max and Haley handed out to six schools with the other workweek volunteers.  Each book was labeled as donated by GVR.  From the amount donated by our members before the workweek, the club also donated to buy all 150 of Project Amigo's 'Becario's' (scholars) with new backpacks this summer.  These are put to very good use and are in great need.
Max and Haley made the donation of clothes, GVR hats and school supplies to kids at the schools.  The hats went to the kids at one school (Pueblo Nueva) who thought they were very cool and the clothes went to kids in another town (Mazatan).  The school supplies were put into bags and given to each teacher at each school.  Kids and teachers appreciated all!  A few pics of the trip are below.

District 5010 Conference is just around the corner!  The serenely beautiful location of the Girdwood Alyeska Resort will be the location for this year’s District Conference.  For those of you who want to know more about the nuts and bolts of how our Rotary Clubs work, the District Assembly will be held on May 7th.  District Conference will be May 8th -10th. The District Conference and District Assembly are open to all Rotarians.

District Conference and Assembly are held each year in the spring.  The Assembly is a training day where courses are taught on Foundation, Membership, Duties of the Club Secretary, Duties of the Treasurer, and etc.  It is day where a lot of learning takes place!

District Conference has many areas of focus- here are a few of the things you may experience while there: Learning about and honoring some of our District’s Club accomplishments, Learning about International needs and successes, Hearing from our National Rotary Leaders, Seeing the entire district’s Inbound Youth Exchange program members and feeling their optimism and energy, Feeling the Rotary Spirit among the largest gathering of Rotarians Alaska!  Believe me, all who attend District Conference come away with a sense of pride for the global effect we Rotarians have.

Sounds Great, Right?  Click on this link before Dec 31st and you will get a discount off of the Registration fee:

Alaska Air and the Ayeska Resort will be offering discounts to District Conference attendees. Please see the District site for more information:

Our Club will once again be offering first time attendees a stipend to help with the costs of attending.  The stipend amount will be determined after we know how many Rotarians would like to take advantage of this offer!

John DeCherney's dog and his crew had a great time cleaning up Duck Creek in May.  It was a beautiful day!  People are still trying to figure out what George was wearing and whether Karen Tarver can pull her hat down any lower and still see.  Thanks to David Buss for coordinating!
