Rotarians in Edmonton are working on ways to attract more “People of Action” to the movement, and their efforts are paying off.
On April 15, Rotary District 5370 hosted a successful Get to Know Rotary event, drawing about 150 people despite a snowstorm. The evening brought together members from clubs across the greater Edmonton area alongside a large number of non-Rotarians for an accessible introduction to the organization’s local and global work.
“While the public had heard about Rotary, there is a ‘knowledge gap’ about the organization’s identity and global scale,” said Maëlle Toews, Public Image Chair for Rotary District 5370. “We always say that Rotary is one of the world’s best-kept secrets: We want to change that!”
As the District's new representative to the Council on Legislation, I want to offer my thanks to Past District Governor and Past Council Representative Julius Buski for the incredible work he has done on our behalf over the last six years serving on the Council.
Now that my term has begun, I want to give you a high level overview of the work of the Council, important dates, and a brief overview of my role.
As the Rotary world celebrates February as Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month, few individuals embody the spirit of this mission as vibrantly as Diego Carneiro. A cellist, conductor, and dedicated humanitarian, Carneiro’s work serves as a powerful reminder that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the active creation of harmony across borders.
In the Rotary world, the month of January is dedicated to Vocational Service, one of the core pillars that distinguishes our organization from other service groups. While many see Rotary through the lens of international projects or local fundraisers, Vocational Service is about something more personal: it is the call for every member to use their professional skills, talents, and ethical standards to serve their communities and the world.
The Abu Dhabi pledging event, where global leaders committed US$1.9 billion to eradicate polio, was attended by District Governor Ramesh Ferris and other key partners in global health.
The work of Rotary International extends far beyond local club meetings. At the core of its global humanitarian efforts lies The Rotary Foundation, a powerful charitable trust that transforms financial gifts into sustainable service projects across the world.
For members of District 5370, the significance of this work will be front and center as they Unite in Whitehorse to welcome Trustee Marty Peak Helman to their upcoming district conference.
On November 8, 2025, Rotary District 5370 gathered for its Fall Assembly to align clubs and leaders with the District's three-year Action Plan (2025-2028) and focus on key priorities for growth and impact.
This article summarizes the essential takeaways from the presentations on the District's core strategic pillars:
Expanding Our Reach through Public Image

The content emphasizes the critical need for effective storytelling to attract members and partners, and outlines the strategic plans designed to reverse recent membership decline and build vibrant, sustainable clubs across the District.
