February: Peacebuilding and World Understanding Month

Peace begins with opportunity and dignity. As we celebrate World Understanding and Peace Day on February 23, we invite all Rotarians and Rotaractors to lead conversations that bridge divides. Check out our four key ways to engage your community and strengthen Rotary’s legacy of peace this month.

Dear Rotarians and Rotaractors of District 5370,

February invites us to reflect on one of Rotary’s most enduring commitments: peacebuilding and conflict prevention/resolution. This month is not only a time of learning and action, but also a celebration of our roots. On February 23, we mark World Understanding and Peace Day, commemorating the anniversary of the very first Rotary meeting in 1905—a powerful reminder that Rotary was founded on fellowship, understanding, and service above self.

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is the presence of opportunity, equity, dignity, and hope. As Rotarians and Rotaractors, we understand that lasting peace begins by addressing root causes—poverty, inequality, lack of education, and limited access to resources. Every project we undertake, every partnership we build, and every conversation we lead has the potential to reduce division and strengthen understanding.

Throughout this month, I encourage clubs to:

  • Champion projects that promote dialogue, inclusion, and mutual respect

  • Highlight Rotary Peace Fellowships and scholarships that prepare leaders to transform conflict into cooperation

  • Engage communities locally and globally to foster goodwill and world understanding

  • Share your peacebuilding stories to strengthen Rotary’s public image and inspire others to act

Rotary’s impact is most powerful when service meets compassion and action meets purpose. Together, we are not only resolving conflict—we are building a culture of peace that endures across generations.

Thank you for the work you do every day to make our communities, our district, and our world more peaceful.

Yours in Rotary Service,
Ramesh Ferris
5370 District Governor
