RYLA 2025Gavin Moore, a sophomore in 2025-26 attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy camp on July 8th to July 12th. After the last 2 years of no applicants, this is a welcome change.

APRIL RAMBLINGSThe April 1 social meeting at Mar-A-Lago was re-scheduled due to April Fool's Day and was instead held at Fiesta En Jalisco with 12 members and guests in attendance. A program was not available on April 8th, so is was mostly a conversational meeting. Laura spoke about her baseball spring training to Arizona. The Rod Johnson Memorial on the 27th was announced. Rod was a past president and 35+ year member of the club who passed away in April of 2024. Lisa Linnekohl's card as a proposed new member was circulated. On April 12th, the Western Montana Coalition of 11 Rotary Clubs held its annual meeting in Polson at the Aquatic Center conference room. 26 were in attendance with updates on the Guatemala projects by Roy Beekman, Dave Renfro, Royce Engstrom and Serena Keller.  There was a board meeting on April 15th at the Boys & Girls Club before the B&G Futures Event attended by 150 people including about a dozen Rotarians. At the Board meeting, the Youth Fundraiser plans were discussed. The beneficiaries of the 2025 event will be Mission Valley Aquatics, Girls Basketball, Youth Pickleball camps, and Friends of the Children as approved by the Board. On April 22nd, Whisper Camel Means, tribal biologist, discussed a project she has been involved with for over 20 years-Highway 93 construction. The construction from St Ignatius to Olsen Road with a 500 ft bridge in Post Creek area will likely start in 2027. Ronan to Hwy 212 will be next, and then Hwy 212 to Olsen Road next (the most difficult planning part). There will be 42 structures for wildlife crossings including cultures and overpasses. Photos of different species using the current structures were shown. The new administrator for St Joseph Hospital, Carol Perdaems, met with the club on the 29th and discussed goals of meeting community health needs and provided brief history. Expansion, visiting specialists, and trauma center upgrades are priorities.

ScholarshipsIn 2025, Rotary has decided to participate through the Polson Scholarship and Education Foundation for awarding scholarships. Two scholarships of $ 1,500 were awarded including one to Ianna Young, our former exchange student and President of the Polson Interact HS club.

INTERACT CLUBOur former exchange student Ianna has organized a high school Rotary Interact Club. They have had three service projects-Community Thanksgiving peeling potatoes, Christmas cookies at Rehabilitation Center, and Valetines/flowers to the Rehab Center. The last meeting had 20 in attendance.  |
YOUTH FUNDRAISER 2025Tickets are being sold for the 2025 Fundraiser! August 9th is the date in conjunction with the Car Show and Art Festival. Participants this year will be Mission Valley Aquatics, Friends of the Children, Polson Pirates Basketball Club, and Pickleball Club (youth clinics).

YOUTH FUNDRAISER 2024The 2024 Youth Fundraiser Brewfest was held on August 10. Attendance and raffle ticket sales were down slightly, but still raised enough money to fund the goals for the different youth projects. Valley View School sold an an exceptional number of tickets to enhance their projects. |
RamblingsAugust 22 attendance: 28 Awards: Local agriculture aficionado and Rotarian Larry Peltz awarded impressive homegrown zucchini to perennial top Youth Fundraiser raffle ticket sellers Hu Beaver, Larry Ashcraft and Sharon Fulton.  Impressive efforts! Guest speaker: Rotarian Sharon Fulton hosted city manager Ed Meece. Mr. Meece highlighted recent projects, challenges and accomplishments. Two major summer street projects are nearing completion: 4th Avenue East and 17th Avenue East. Both projects should be completed soon for the start of the new school year. The city administration is now nearly fully staffed, with the addition of building inspector Craig Raymond. The comprehensive hiring process for a new chief of police is currently underway. A 45-day ban on open fires was enacted by the the city commission in response to the current fire season. Outdoor barbecues and grills are still permitted. Outdoor water restrictions (odd/even days) are in place as a proactive measure. Well #8 will be electrified and operational today! Questions for Mr. Meece included: impact fees and the citizen study group; recent property tax legislative changes; city water status; the city annexation of tribal property on the west side; the state of the bridge; street repairs; traffic and safety on Highway 93. Guatemala Update 2.9.23GUATEMALA WATER PROJECTS News from the District Conference May 18, 2024-George Gerhard, inspirational leader of the Guatemala water projects over the years was awarded the prestigious Rotary International Service Above Self award. Update-February 9, 2023 The Board has made a $30 per member annual commitment to the consortium of Western Montana Rotary clubs to assist in the development of water projects in Guatemala.  |
RAMBLINGSThe meeting of November 29th was again light on attendance with only 12 members attending along with the speaker. But it didn't lack in enthusiasm as 8 members responded to Hu's challenge for $1,000 for the food bank to meet an anonymous match from a non-Rotarian. It turned out to be a 10 for 1 match so Brooke is shown presenting a check to the Loaves and Fishes for $11,000. If the pantry still needed donations for the Town Pump match, this should do it.  It's still not too late to sign up for the Christmas party on December 6, so contact Brooke for more info. We decided to take a Holiday break on both the 20th and the 27th. David King of the Flathead Lake International CinemaFest was the speaker. FLIC Is now in its 11th year and again looks like it is going to have an excellent choice of 50 or 60 films coming up soon. He showed 2 videos, one with highlights of the people involved last year and another that was actually a mining equipment safety commercial, but it was very well done showing the emotional swings of an young underground miner with a child and faced with dangerous conditions. |
Rotary Youth Fundraiser 2022 The event was held on August 13 under the new Brewfest format on main street in front of the Elks in conjunction with the Car Show and the Sandpiper Art show. The beneficiaries were Youth Wrestling was awarded $6,500 for new and replacement signets for its expanding program, now with 110 participants including females, Mission Valley Aquatics was awarded $ 5,000 for the important 2nd & 3rd grade swim program with 200 participants (Greater Polson Community Foundation is also likely donating $ 7,250), The Polson Cheer team was budgeted for $ 2,500 for new and replacement uniforms for its 19 members, up from 10 and Youth baseball $ 2,500 for its equipment needs-their participants are up 40ish to approximately 200. All the beneficiaries were able to increase their proceeds by 30% to 60% through raffle ticket sales by their own participants. 1,503 raffle tickets were sold overall for the 5 prizes all valued at $ 1,000 value. The Brewfest format was very popular and was smoothly run by the 20 or so Rotary members who helped.  |
APRIL RAMBLINGSThe April 4th Social was held at the Sports Page with 14 in attendance including one potential member, 4 spouses and a cute child. April 11th meeting had 20 in attendance plus 3 representatives from the School District to explain the upcoming levy votes for $49,871,809 needed for building updates to all the schools. There was also a board meeting before the regular meeting where two members were approved. DeeDee Blaney (title insurance) will be returning to the club after an absence of several years and Cameron Milton (golf pro) added as a new member. RYLA, scholarships, highway clean-up and the Signature Project were discussed with $ 2,000 approved as a tentative budget for expenses for the event. Only 13 were in attendance on the 19th with Larry Peltz updating the club on Rotary International projects including PolioPlus, Gobi tree planting, Peace Fellowship, Thailand swim lessons, Bangladesh Roteract projects, Venezulian economic refugees, Rwanda school supplies, Guatemala water projects, India prosethics, Finland Xmas tree recycling for fish habitat, Australian socks, Nepal education, Shelter Box emergency shelters, Ukrainian refugee aid and more. The meeting on the 26th had 31 in attendance including guests and Polson's Outbound Exchange student Iaani heading for Brazil. The program was Rob McDonald and Melissa Schliting to discuss the implentating of the Water Compact.

MARCH RAMBLINGSThe March 1st Social Hour was held at the Perfect Shot Tavern with the largest attendance this year with 10 Rotarians and 7 guests. Some were pre-celebrating Toni's husband's birthday party. The March 8th meeting was preceded by a board meeting where Larry Robertson was approved as a member, $ 250 was donated to Senior Class Graduation Party, and the Signature Project reported that the ChiliFest is being changed to a BrewFest. At the regular meeting, Cheryl Maldando was inducted as a new member and Dee Dee Blaney gave a report on the local real estate market from the perspective on a title company. There were 21 in attendance. March 15th meeting had a large attendance of 26 with visiting Rotarian Roy Beekman and 2 guests. Devin Huntley was inducted as a new member. The program featured Polson's new mayor Eric Huffine who is in his first political office. He is hoping to meet with as many groups as he learns more about the ins and outs of leading a local government. The new Peace Pole was shown at the meeting and has now been erected in the median area by the Hwy 93 turn to the golf course. All 4 sides have a different slogan.  Fun and Fancy's Lisa Wall-Wilbert was the speaker at the March 22nd meeting. Fun and Fancy is a recently completed 15,000 square foot day care/learning center on Polson's west side. With baby rooms and age-group classes, the facility has a capacity of 180 children. Small buses are used to transport the kids as necessary. She spoke of the hurdles in building such a facility from city regulations, security issues, etc even with an architect and a general contractor (Hu Beaver).  The meeting on the 28th had only 17 in attendance. The Signature committee is actively meeting now with 10 in attendance as the last planning meeting. Dee Ann Richardson of Safe Harbor of Lake County was the speaker. The non-profit serves victims of domestic violence by providing emergency shelter, crisis intervention, emergency advocacy, transportation and emergency vouchers for groceries and fuel. A thrift store in Ronan has been a successful source of funds thanks to the community. |

CORONAVIRUS AND ROTARY 2021We have decided to meet for the remainder of 2021 on the 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays at our regular noon meeting. The first Tuesday will be a social evening with spouses and prospective members invited. The 4th week will be a service project of some type, like highway pick-up, depending on needs. If there is a 5th Tuesday in a month, it will be birthday talks, where members can talk about whatever. Upon request, a Zoom link will be provided. Please contact the Treasurer. Your attendance, your continued support for our projects, your time and your dues, all are what make Polson Rotary great. |
RamblingsAt the meeting Of October 19th there were 14 members in attendance. Dave Fansher reported that the Dictionary Project has most of the smaller schools completed. Justice revolved around the Salvation Army. Bret won the Raffle and donated to Loaves and Fishes. Jim Thaden, member and Director of Montana West Community Development, updated on projects including the Economic Development District, a regional innovation center in Polson, a USDA Grant for a City development program, a county engineering study for the fairgrounds boat ramp, and additional funds available for small business loans. At the meeting on October 26th, 20 were in attendance including 3 guests and a visiting Rotarian from Missoula Sunrise. Paul Travis of the Flathead Land Trust was the speaker. The Land Trust has been active for 37 years and has developed conservation easements on over 16,000 acres from the South Mission Valley to the Canadian border including farmlands, wetlands and wildlife habitat. Two current projects include the almost 800 acres in the Bad Rock Canyon area and the new Somers Beach state park. |
Evening SocialThe evening social for October 4th was held at the Brewery in Ronan at 5:30. The Brewery had Trivia night, so 3 Rotarian teams participated, with one winning a growler. 9 were in attendance. November 2nd social will be at the Glacier Brewery at 5:30. Costumes optional. Guests or prospective members should be invited too. |
RamblingsAt the September 28th program, 25 were in attendance including program presenters Mary Price and Rob McDonald of CSKT to discuss the recently passed Water Compact. The next step is to form the Board of Water Management. The 3 counties affected will 90 days to submit names to the Governor for approval. A knowledge of water issues will be important. Hopefully, the Board will be operational in 180 days. It will be able to employ engineers as needed and an implementation fund will be available to help achieve the overall goals of rebuilding the system to provide more water through increased efficiency. Justice was very productive as nobody managed to answer all 52 trivia questions on college football systems. Dennis won the raffle and donated to Loaves and Fishes. The Happy Bucket was highlighted by Doug announcing he is cancer-free after a long battle. The trivia practice may come in handy at the October 4 social meeting at 5:30 at the new Brewery in Ronan. We will have a team to compete with other teams.  On Saturday, 13 members (and a spouse) turned out for the highway clean-up on Polson hill. Afterwards drinks and lunch at Sports Page were paid for by another member who couldn't make it. Ed and his wife Mary seemed to be everywhere with oversize pick-up sticks and huge bags. |
Guatemala Water ProjectThe Board had voted for a 3 year commitment of $ 30 per year per member to the consortium of Western Montana Rotary clubs involved in a water project in Guatemala in 2018 and recently has made a pledge for 3 more years. See below for an update. |
Ramblings August 3122 were present today with visiting Rotarian Bob Dayton and 2 program presenters, Keith Meyer and Alana Listoe of the Shodair Children's Hospital in Helena. Jake was presiding today as the Happy Bucket raked in $ 166, the Raffle $ 29 with Keith winning again, donating his share to Mission Valley Aquatics, and Justice $ 53 with Doug asking 3 questions about the history of the fisheries in Flathead Lake. Keith and Alana has a power-point presentation on the new hospital building in Helena. With a projected cost at $ 66 million with bonds financing $ 52 million, the new building will be 131,000 square feet which includes 82 new patient single beds, an indoor pool, gym, workout areas and spaces for music, art, dancing, outdoor activities. Expected completion date is December 2022. Shodair is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year of serving the needs of Montana families with outpatient facilities in Butte, Missoula and Helena. Shodair is also currently in discussions to expand services to Lake County.

Ramblings 8.23RAMBLINGS IS BACK!! As the club is coming back together after the Covid problems of the last 18 months, Ramblings is back to keep you aware of what happened this week at the Rotary meeting, so you can see what you missed. 20 members were in attendance along with visiting Rotarian Sheriane and the program speaker Shiela Matt. Hu was substituting as president since Jake is on paternity leave after the birth of his daughter, Rebecca. Jamie and the daughter are doing fine. Sheriane was in her last visit this year and will be volunteering at the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesdays until she returns to California. She donated a Women in Rotary pin given to her by the Fresno club president.  Making immediate use of the pin, Hu awarded to Brooke for all her work on the Signature Project-a small token of the appreciation for her efforts.  The Happy Bucket brought in $ 61 with Jim Oates relating his recent trip to a Detroit Tiger ballgame to see Sohei Ohtani, a Japanese player who already is a super-star in a way not seen since Babe Ruth a 100 years ago, with both his hitting and pitching. In Detroit, he hit his 40th home run and pitched 8 innings giving up 1 run. Unfortunately, for Jim, that was in the game on the next day. The winning raffle ticket was drawn by Keith, who philanthropically donated his share to the Martini Fund. Justice was led by Doug Wold, who focused on the history of hydroplane races in Polson. These were popular and well-attended races in the 1960s and 1970s. His main question was "who was the most beautiful queen of races" and that stumped everyone except Sharon Fulton. The program was Sheila Matt, who is the chair for the Flathead River Rodeo coming this weekend after a hiatus of a few years. It is part of KwaTaqNuk's commitment to the community. This year, over 500 contestants are expected, starting Thursday. Highlights include over a 100 teams of ropers and 36 bull riders competing, Winners may qualify for the Indian National Finals. There will be music every night after the rodeo and beer gardens and food vendors also. A big screen will be there for instant re-plays too. |

Evening SocialAugust 3rd was at the KOA pool at 5:30 with about 20 in attendance including spouses and guests. Refreshments were on hand and Patsy Beaver put a lot of work into making sandwiches and other snacks. Hu beat a 6, 8, and 10 year old at putt-putt golf, but Gayle lost to his grandkids.  Plans are in the works for the September social.

Ramblings2 weeks of Ramblings On September 15, Bret opened the meeting at KwaTaqNuk with Zoom available. There were 15 in attendance counting District Governor Sandy Carlson of the Kalispell Daybreak club and Sherian Eckenrod, who was attending as her last meeting this summer as a visiting Rotarian before returning to Fresno. 4 others attended by Zoom. Gayle had double duty as the Inspirationer and Song Leader. He chose Old McDonald Had a Farm-which turned out to be one of our better efforts this year. Sadly, there was no Justice in our Rotary World today. Bret announced that his member survey results are still coming in and will be discussed at the next board meeting, so if you haven't given your input, please do soon. Before the meeting there was a presentation of a check for $ 12,050 at the School District for the Teacher and Staff Appreciation project for Chamber Bucks awards of $ 50 certificates. The Club is almost to 60% in collecting the amount (which is in-lieu of Signature Project raffle tickets). If you haven't already paid your requested $ 100 or which to donate more, please do so soon. Jim can send you a link to pay by credit, debit or e-check if requested at oates65@gmail.com. After the meeting, another presentation was made at the new Boys and Girls Club with a check for $ 8,000 to help pay for the basketball backboards. These funds were paid out of a Montana Coronavirus Relief Fund grant.  Happy Bucket contributors were Joe, Wayne, Roxanne, Sherian, and Ron. Joe won the raffle and donated his share to the Martini Fund. The District Governor quickly added another $ 20 as she thought that was a great cause. Sandy was the program today as she is making the rounds for the annual visit of the District Governor to all clubs, with Polson being her 10th visit and only 31 left to go! Sandy related how she became acquainted with Rotary while finding a group of Rotarians working on a project in Mexico and now has been a member for 18 years. She has been to Guatemala 6 times visiting the water projects sponsored by the Northwest MT Sustainable Global Coalition (Polson has been member-donating over $ 5,000). She spoke of RI's current President Holger Knaack of Germany and presented pins symbolizing his theme of "Rotary Opens Opportunities" in ways that benefit not just the lives of those being helped, but also that benefit the Rotarians. He wants to increase the impact of Rotary, increase the participation of members, expand the reach of Rotary, and encourage adaptability of members and clubs. Sandy mentioned the District Assembly last month was attended by 50 Rotarians and the upcoming District conference in April. Bret presented her with a gift basket from the Polson Club. |

RamblingsAugust 18, 2020 Bret called the meeting at KwaTaqNuk to order at 12:15 with 15 in attendance and 6 Zoomed in. The usually reliable “Montana” was sung. Roger Grimes gave the inspirational prayer. Megan won the Raffle and donated her winnings to the Boys and Girls Club. Rob Turner administered Justice with a trivia question on the year “1929” (don’t play trivia with Megan), and Hu was the Happy Bucket contributor. Bret presented Rob Turner with a $ 1,000 check for the Polson Youth Soccer Association to repair their mangled goals. The funding came from the Montana Coronavirus Relief Fund grant received by Rotary.  Devin Huntley, CEO of Providence St Joseph Medical Center was the speaker. He spoke of the effects of Covid 19 globally, nationally, and locally. Earlier on, there was a UW epidemiology study that predicted dire consequences for Lake County. However, a later study by UM, taking into account the local conditions and trends, reflected the results so far. There are currently patients in the Covid unit, but none on ventilators. The big screen was used for Zoom. Participants could be seen on the screen if their video was turned on. The PowerPoint “shared” the screen with mixed results as it appeared washed-out for the Zoom participants. Hopefully, we will continue to make Zoom more efficient. |
RamblingsAugust 11, 2020 Bret called the meeting to order at KwaTaqNuk with 13 members in attendance and 4 others attending by Zoom. Roger Grimes gave the invocation and Doug Wold led the song. Covid precautions were fair. After lunch, the raffle was won by Roger Grimes, who donated it back to Loaves & Fishes. The Happy Bucket garnered $ 100 and Justice was administered in absentia for Rob Turner, who had a quiz about Babe Ruth’s 500th home run. Bret reported on the Board meeting held before the regular meeting. The Board voted to use the Montana Coronavirus Relief Fund grant received of $ 10,000 to continue the Festival of Youth funding for projects. The Boys and Girls Club was awarded $ 8,000 toward the cost of basketball hoops, the Youth Soccer Association was awarded $ 1,000 toward the replacement of goals, and Mission Valley Christian Academy’s award was $ 1,000 for uniforms to complete their sports fundraising campaign. Rotary and an anonymous member had previously donated $ 1,000. Another project in the works is to give the 250 teachers and staff of Polson Schools a $ 50 gift certificate to show appreciation for the difficulties that may face in the upcoming school. Bret is asking individual members to donate at least $ 100 each (in lieu of selling/buying raffle tickets) to raise $ 7,500. The Board voted to donate $ 5,000 from the Signature Project reserves. So far, response has been strong with over $ 1,000 committed by members. The Dictionary project was approved for 2020. Two of the sponsors of the Signature Project will likely donate $ 500 towards the club cost of $ 1,200. The Board thought is was very important to continue this project in these difficult times. Plans are in the works with KwaTaqNuk to improve the Zoom experience with better equipment. Members calling in (with video on) will be shown on the big screen. The acoustics will be improved and a volunteer will manage Zoom. Suggested call-in time will be 12:45 after lunch is finished. Program opportunities could be greatly enhanced through the use of Zoom reaching speakers not usually available. Hu Beaver was awarded a Rotary Paul Harris award (his second) in tribute to his service as president in 2019-2020. Both Hu and Bret spoke about the importance of members making the commitment as an important part of Rotary and would like to see everyone at least starting the process of a “Paul Harris”. |

Brooke Duty introduced today’s speakers from the Lake County Public Health Department, Emily Colomeda, director, Leigh Estvold, public nurse and Sheena Madsen, community education specialist. The three answered COVID-19 related questions including where testing was available, contact tracing, results from the Lake County-CSKT Task Force COVID-19 free testing and reasons for wearing a mask. Drawing: 50/50: Dave Overcast won and gave the money to Mission Valley Aquatics. Justice: Matt O’Neill educated Rotarians about marshal law. Larry Ashcraft introduced today’s speaker, current Polson City Manager and Police Chief Wade Nash. Wade has been interim city manager since November 2018 and Polson Police Chief since 2011. Wade and Larry mentioned that 4 candidates for city manager have been chosen and their names will be given to the Polson City Commission. Wade encouraged all Polson Rotarians to be involved in the selection process. He described the city manager as one of the most important positions in city government. Wade attributed much of his success as interim manager to trusting city employees and holding everyone accountable. Wade says he is waiting to see how the COVID-19 pandemic will affect tax revenue in Polson. He said the next city budget will not include funding for large projects as a precaution. Wade asked how do you keep Polson alive and how do we improve the city’s infrastructure? Wade said the city’s waste water treatment plant is fully operational, however he anticipates litigation between the engineering firm and contractor to be imminent. Wade sincerely thanked Polson Rotary for the generous donation to the employees of the Polson Police Department. RamblingsFebruary 11, 2020 President Hu Beaver called the meeting to order at 12:15pm. The meeting was held at The Kwataqnuk Resort. Dick Beighle led us in song. Dick Christopher gave the invocation and Dennis Duty served justice. Announcements are as follows: “Happy bucket” contributors were: Hu, Gayle Seiemers, Larry Peltz, Dan Cook, Karen Dunwell, Dave Fansher and Jim Oates. Dick Christopher won the drawing and gave the money to the Loaves and Fish Food Pantry. The Polson Rotary board meeting is held every second Tuesday of the month prior to the general meeting. During the meeting held February 11, Duane Hille was voted in as a new Polson Rotarian, a draft proposal for a district grant is in the works , as well as a rough draft on an 80th reunion event this summer. This week’s program was Sharon Fulton. Her guest was Monte Morengo of Glacier Cone Company. He mentioned the idea for his company began in the early 1970s. Monte said he is a broker of “spent” cones, those that have no seeds remaining. He works with various cone collection companies throughout certain states in the U.S., Canada and even India. His company provides various varieties of cones from species such as fir, spruce and pine to 5 different entities such as florists and potpourri merchants and manufactures. He said weather, temperature and soil conditions determine which tree species thrive in certain parts of the country. Monte said the cone business has allowed him to pursue other passions such as photography. He said he had just returned from Southern California where he captured the grief from the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash first hand. Monte said he is in the cone business long term and enjoys it very much. See below for an update from George Gehard of the Sustainable Global Coalition re the Guatemala water project. Polson is a member of the Coaliton and made a 4 year financial commitment of approximately $ 2,000 a year. The next Polson Rotary meeting will be Tuesday, February 18, 2020. Birthday talks are planned. February birthdays include Dave Abell, Jim Ofstad, Dick Kreidel, Wayne Schile and Rick Skates. Donations-JulyAt our July meetings, Hu presented a $500 check to Andrew Lau for the Lake County Connect “Building Bridges for Children and Youth” project focusing on mental health issues and a $500 check to Janet Mulroy for the Healthy Kids! Back to School second annual event organized by a consortium of community organizations.

ScholarshipsIt is that time of year again! High school seniors wanting to apply for a scholarship to should contact Emily at the high school counselor's office for an application form by the 15th of April. Usually the amounts are from $ 500 to $ 1,000.
