Rotary Ramblings February 4, 2020
President Hu Beaver called the meeting to order at 12:15pm. The meeting was held at The Kwataqnuk Resort. Dick Kreidel led us in song. Rob Turner gave the invocation and Dennis Duty served justice. Announcements are as follows:
“Happy bucket” contributors were Hu, Dennis Duty, Dick Kreidel, Dave Fansher and Jim Oates.
Brooke Duty won the drawing and gave the money to the Martini Fund.
The Polson Rotary board meeting is held every second Tuesday of the month prior to the general meeting.
This week’s program was Karen Dunwell. She gave the history of the steamboat era on Flathead Lake. Karen brought us back to the 1800’s when Montana’s economic growth was proceeding at a rapid pace. Land freight was impossible around Flathead Lake, so the steamboat became the answer .Karen mentioned in 1884, the sailing vessel “The Swan,” was one of the first to sail the lake. It was later converted into a steam boat. She said hundreds of boats sailed north and south from ports in Polson, Demersville, near Bigfork, that was later replaced by Somers. The boats carried freight, people, livestock and more. Karen said the S.S. Hodge, which still is active on Fathead Lake, was built in 1913 as a double-wheel steam boat. Karen said the steamboat era ended on Flathead Lake about that same year, when railroad service became more widely available. Karen said about one quarter of the Polson-Flathead Historical Museum is dedicated to boating history on the lake and encouraged anyone with an interest to visit to find out more.

President Hu Beaver called the meeting to order at 12:15pm. The meeting was held at The Kwataqnuk Resort. Mac Swan led us in song. Toni Young Whealon gave the invocation and Megan Beard served justice. Announcements are as follows:
“Happy bucket” contributors were Hu, Larry Peltz, Dave Fansher, Karen Dunwell and Ed Gannon.
Visiting guests: Brodie’s guest was long-time Larry Skipper of Illinois and Gayle’s guest was Sam Orr, owner of Mountain Ash Professional Services. Sam and his wife are mental health clinicians.
Larry Ashcraft won the drawing and gave the money to the martini fund.
Rich Forbis mentioned that February is Heart Health month at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. Free lipid profiles, $49 Cardiac Health Profiles and $30 baseline EKGs Mondays, Tuesdays or Fridays through February. Larry Ashcraft said 9 Rotarians helped in the making of 260 breakfast burritos served during the children’s movie Saturday at FLIC. Mac Swan said the event was a great success. Jake mentioned that census takers are being sought for the 2020 U.S. Census.
This week’s program was Tom Campbell’s slide show depicting his latest excursion to Kenya. Tom said his wife still has family in Mombasa Kenya, including two brothers. The son of one brother’s marriage is the main reason for the trip according to Tom. He said one brother-in-law helped to fund a lunch for 900 as Tom calls it. One Sunday, a group of Tom’s wife’s family members, plus Lutheran missionaries from the Netherlands, helped feed 900 or more children. The lunch consisted of beans, rice, wheat rolls, a drink and dessert. Tom said the children came from as far away as 3 or more miles from the industrial farm where the meal was served. Many were farm worker’s children, but many others were invited by missionaries. Tom said that if funding and volunteer support are available that these meals might be served twice a month. Tom said it made him think of how much more needs to be done in third world countries.

Rotary Ramblings January 21, 2020

Bret Richardson won the drawing and gave the money to Goat Peak Ranch, a men’s cancer retreat.
Larry Ashcraft mentioned the Flathead Lake International CinemaFest January 24-26. Polson Rotary will again cook breakfast burritos for the children’s movie on Saturday the 25th. If you would like to help, meet at the Lake Bar on Highway 93 about 6:30am.
Gayle announced that the City of Polson search for a new city manager has their recruitment brochure ready and an ad is on the website and will be posted for applications shortly.
Hu announced that Kris Sampson has resigned from Mission Valley Aquatics to take a job in Phoenix. The MVA board has hired Pam Havlovik as an aquatic director.
This week’s program was birthday talks. Dave Fansher told us about his background and a job he held with Abercrombie and Fitch in Chicago for a few years. Dave started out as a salesman in their gun department and moved up to the managerial position. He regaled us with tales about various new and estate guns they carried in the store and famous international figures who shopped there.
January birthdays include Shandice Kerr, David Lewing and David Fansher.
