Special Message for Rotarians

The District administration of 6440 would like to pass along the following information to our club:

RI Convention 2030 - Chicago bid is impending and we have an extraordinary opportunity to support a Community Engagement effort. Community Engagement is now a part of the evaluation criterion, and our local districts (6450, 6440, and 6420) are making the most of it. Friday, October 21 from 7am-3pm, Rotary is renting out Pioneer Court, just north of the Apple Store on Michigan Avenue, right alongside the river, to engage the community.

We will set up ShelterBoxes, a table to talk about Rotary, and other Rotary materials to engage passersby. We will answer their questions and get information from them to later follow up with them as new prospective members.

Oh and the RI Convention 2030 committee members will “randomly” stop by that morning to see us in action and visualize what it could look like in 2030 as well. Bring your positive energy, Rotary answers, and can-do attitude to Pioneer Court! Sign up here!

Grove Interact Year in Review 2019-2020

The students in the Grove Junior High School Rotary Club were busy during the year doing great things for others.  In the Fall, they devoted some of their lunch periods collecting money from fellow students in order to buy polio shots for many.  Besides collecting at lunchtime, they created posters and set up a table in the school entryway in order to collect donations from parents and teachers during conference days.   In December, working alongside adults at the Packages for Patriots was a wonderful way to provide care packages for those who give their service to others in this country.  Making blankets for foster children using fleece was most likely the students' favorite activity. For many hours one could find them with scissors in hand pinning and cutting out  fleece and then tying the ends together resulting in brightly colored and beautiful blankets.  These blankets will be delivered to a representative of Aunt Martha's who will give the carefully hand-crafted treasures to children who will benefit from the loving work of our students.  The above was sent to us from the school sponsors Debbie Friel  and Lori Putz who are two incredible teachers that volunteer to help organize the interact.

Pennies for Polio

Posted by Bill Beaupre on Nov 01, 2019

Grove Interact which is made up of students at Grove Junior High School located in Elk Grove Village organized a fund raiser to help eradicate Polio.  Pennies for Polio was a fund raiser that students and staff donated to during lunch hours and between classes.  The Interact kids raised about $168.  The Elk Grove Rotary Club which sponsors the club matched the funds to bring the total to $336.  The kids then sent the contribution to Rotary International where The Bill Gates Foundation will do a two to one match which means an additional $672 will be added to the $334.  The total contribution to help eradicate Polio is over $1000.  This was a great fundraiser but was also a great way to raise awareness that Polio which was once fairly common here in the 50's and 60's is still a concern is some regions of the world.

Elk Grove Rotary Club contributed another $500 so we could send $1050 to Shelter Box to help people with necessary supplies in a disaster.

Elk Grove Rotary Supports Make a Wish

Posted on Oct 01, 2018
Elk Grove Rotary recently supported the Make a Wish foundation and attended the Wish Walk in Busse Woods.  The walk is a major fund raiser for the Make a wish foundation.  The Foundation is a wonderful charity that grants wishes to kids that are suffering from illness.  Kids wishes are as simple as a new bike to as elaborate as a trip to the Bahamas.  Disneyland is certainly one of the most popular destinations.  One of the cool things about the walk are all of the characters that are invited.  We were lucky enough to get a picture with some of the characters from Star Wars.

Chuck is extremely active with the American Parkinson Disease Association constantly speaking at different venues to raise awareness as well as funds to fight the disease. There is still a lot to be learned about this horrible disease. Parkinson's is very often misdiagnosed and is very different for each individual affected. Chuck also brought Ricki Chaidez, the Program Director for APDA of the Midwest Chapter. Ricki also filled the club in on some interesting facts regarding Parkinson's as well as left us with information regarding the walk which will take place in the fall. ShelterBox

Mark Dyer is a volunteer with ShelterBox and is part of the Response team.  The response team is responsible for going directly to the devastated areas to help with logistics and disbursement of the ShelterBoxes.  The ShelterBox is designed to have necessary living items which will last 6 months.  Several of the tents have been known to last up to 2 years.  The key to survival after a detestation is shelter and warmth form the elements.  ShelterBox provides emergency shelter to families that have lost everything.  Elk Grove Rotary has been a supporter of ShelterBox since 2008 and since then has contributed funds to supply twelve ShelterBoxes to families in need.  Each ShelterBox cost $1000 which includes all of the supplies as well as the transportation of the box to the destroyed area.

Elk Grove Rotary Helps Build a New Well in Zambia

As Lawrence Temfwe spoke to the Elk Grove Rotary Club about our club’s partnership in providing clean water to people in Mapolo Zambia, he wanted to “dance in gratitude.”

Because of our partnership people will not be forced to depend on wells that are not deep enough to provide clean water. Over 800 children have access to this bore hole pictured here, and can drink clean water, be healthy and spend time in school. Martha Temfwe also shared how through Jubilee Center for only $35 a month children can be sponsored to enable them to get an education. Through our club, Lawrence has been able to form a partnership with the local Rotary club in Zambia, this could just be the beginning!  Thanks to the International Committee and all the supporting Rotarians that make great things like this happen.

Elk Grove Rotary Club Raises Money For End Polio Now

The Elk Grove Rotary Club was at the Elk Grove High School football game on October 12, 2012, collecting funds to help in the fight against the crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease known as Polio.  This was the second game this year the club collected funds and the total amount collected was $592.44.  The club agreed to match any funds collected which means the total contribution to eradicating polio is $1184.88.  Rotary International started a large international campaign for Polio eradication called Polio Plus in 1985.  In 1988 there were more than 125 countries polio endemic.  Now with India surpassing a year polio free there are only 3 countries polio endemic.  A child can be protected for life from the virus for as little as $.60 which means our contribution will protect over 1900 children.  A special thanks the generous football fans, friends, volunteers as well as the Elk Grove High school Students who helped with the events.

Steve Silic Talks Fish

Steve Silic is the Forest Preserve District of Cook County Fisheries Biologist and he was kind enough to be the clubs guest speaker on October 11, 2012.  Steve spent time telling us about the incredible Walleye reproduction/stocking program that takes place at Lake Tampier which is just south west of Chicago.  Steve starts in early spring by catching several adult walleye from the lake using gillnets, fyke nets as well as Electro shock.  The electro shock is done at night when walleyes are most active and can yield as many as eighty in an hour.  The fish are sorted by sex and as many as 35,000 to 615,000 eggs are harvested from a female per year.  The eggs are mixed and fertilized in bowls and hatched at the McGinnis Field station.  The fry are then transported to a small holding pond for about 6-8 weeks until they are two to three inches and are then called fingerlings.  The fingerlings will then be transported to Lake Tampier and will now have a 25% survival rate compared to the only 1% if they were released as fry. Lake Tampier has an incredible walleye population with several walleye weighing in from eight to twelve pounds.

Elk Grove Rotary Golf Outing

Posted by Bill Beaupre on Sep 26, 2012
The Elk Grove Rotary annual Golf outing was on September 27, 2012.  It was a beautiful fall day and most of the club attended this wonderful fellowship opportunity.  Rotarians tried their best to win some of the great prizes available at most of the holes.  There was the longest putt, shortest putt, closest to the pin as well as the longest drive.  The longest drive did come with a little controversy, some wanted to count the ball even if in the sand hazard.  After several minutes of discussing an amicable solution was determined.  After golf a wonderful steak dinner in the club house. Following dinner was an entertaining raffle and everyone went home a winner.

John McCabe with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County speaks at the Elk Grove Rotary Club on August 16, 2012.  John discussed the recent devastation from the Emerald Ash Borer.  John visited the club a few years back explaining to us how the EAB bug had devastated the Michigan Ash trees and  was on its way to Illinois.  Unfortunately John was correct and the EAB Bug is now in Illinois and devastating local communities and the Cook County Forest Preserve.  The EAB Bug targets Ash trees which is a very popular tree in the area. The Forest Preserve has spent a great deal of money and time already battling the bug by removing and replanting many trees.

Ryan M. Brod Ambassadorial Scholarship Recipient

Posted by Helmut Gottfert on Nov 04, 2010

It is our great pleasure to announce Ryan M. Brod as the winner of the 2010 Rotary Foundation’s Ambassadorial Scholarship. Ryan is currently a member the Cadet Class of 2011 at the Military Academy at West Point. Our sponsorship and Ryan’s impressive credentials resulted in the granting of this award over thousands of other candidates throughout the world, and commits $25,000 toward his education abroad.

Ambassadorial Scholarships, The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, more than 40,000 men and women from about 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is one of the world's largest privately funded international scholarships programs. Nearly 700 scholarships were awarded for study in 2009-10. Through grants totaling approximately US$16.2 million, recipients from about 70 countries studied in more than 80 nations.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors academic year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.

Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent a continued faith that today’s Ambassadorial Scholars will be tomorrow's community and world leaders.

They collect used shoes and sell them at a very low cost to entrepreneurs in Africa. The money is used to support educational efforts, and the shoes provide an important stimulus to the local economy.
