Donation to Caledon Community ServicesThe following is a note from CCS (Caledon Community Services) to Palgrave Rotary. It's so nice to see the donations in action. Hello Raphael, a heartfelt and warm thank you to you and Palgrave (Caledon) Rotary for your incredible gift of $ 2040 in gift cards. Your kindness will directly touch many lives right here at home! Please share our gratitude with all Palgrave Rotarians! I know that my thank you might not mean much. But I thank you on behalf of Sandy*, a single Mom of two, who now does not have to choose between paying the rent or putting food on the table – thanks to you. I thank you on behalf of John*, a local Caledon senior, who will now have a special holiday meal thanks to you. And I thank you on behalf of five-year old Juliet*, who now has a full lunchbox thanks to you (even Oreos, her favourite treat). Did you know that one third of our food bank clients are children? We can only be there for our neighbours in need thanks to you. Thank you so much for being in our corner. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season ahead, and hope to see you soon too. Thank you for your kindness! |

Rotary Park EmbellishmentIn our little Village of Palgrave the local Rotary club bought a rusty old used container to securely hold all the necessary equipment to create and maintain the skating surfaces on the local pond which is maintained by dedicated people from our community such as Ken Hunt. Palgrave Rotary members painted the container in a deep blue and we asked two local artists to paint up a design on the side of the container at no cost. (See the Pics).

Selling Xmas trees /poinsettiasA new project for our club this year was the sale of Christmas Trees and Poinsettias via the internet. One of our members, Angie McDowell, took on the job of pulling this event together. It was a total success with a sold-out situation. The chuckwagon was also part of the 2 days of the sale and our member, Brenda Alderdice, made sure it would work out smoothly with free food for all the customers that were picking up their Christmas trees and Poinsettias that were preordered. All in all, it was a success all around. ![]() ![]() |

Our new storage containerWith the help of master painter Dan Petre and of our 3 members ( Angie McDowell, Paul Galer and Dennis Foss) we redefined our 20 ft sea container sitting in our Rotary Park area on hwy 50 from a rusty piece of metal to a beautiful dark blue container. We will now plan to decorate the side of the container with painted designs and our logo. Thanks also to Aldrey Ricardo, Ian Kittle, Gord Barr and Imtiaz Ahmad whom participated in sanding down and polishing this rusted container. Also the neighbor, Brad Vanlenthe connected and supply the hose and water to clean our container. The job is done and a good one it is. See on attached. Thanks gang. Bernie

Generous donation to a better PalgraveThe Palgrave Rotary club has been approached by a very generous Palgrave family wanting to donate a significant amount of money to go towards a project that would embellish or improve our Palgrave community in some ways. Things like lighting for the pond on Hwy 50, some kind roofed stage in one of our parks for events, bicycle repair station (tools and air pump), summer musical concert by the pond, and more. We are looking for suggestions. Put your imaginative thinking cap on and write to us here or on our Palgrave Rotary Facebook site. https://www.facebook.com/PalgraveRotary/ The following suggestions have already been submitted by Denis. We need more. Thank you from all of us to all of you. Bernie Zebra-crossing at the convenience store (it would be safer to cross the street to the cars on the other side)
- Public BBQs and picknick tables for get-togethers - A dock in the pond. For a little walk over the water, swimming (is that actually possible in the pond?) and/or lunching paddelboats/rawing boats - Public toilet next to the pond - More waste bins - Book/DVD/Games sharing station - Palgrave Community Potluck event, Big Band evening, Swing in Palgrave, Local musicians sing for the area (some day in the future) - Torch-lit/lantern walk at one of the trails - Archery/Crossbow Range - Barefoot path - Little Community Centre/Hall - Drinking water fountain (no chlorine taste, please ;-)) - Blackboard with information and offers from local producers and businesses. Or a "who is who" about different personalities from here. - A community garden with shared places and family sponsorships. - A herb garden. Don't buy them in the supermarket - get them fresh in Palgrave - An information board about the different animals in and around the pond. |

Bed Kits for Children WorldwideThe Rotary Club of Palgrave was excited to attend the Sleeping Children Around The World school assembly at Palgrave Public School this morning in support of their amazing fundraiser for this charity. Students attended in pyjamas in recognition of the fact that their fundraising efforts provide bed kits for children in less fortunate countries. The photo shows the student fundraising committee with their awesome teacher Patrick Patten just prior to the assembly. The result was announced. The school had raised $2459.00 which meant they will give 70 bed kits to the charity for use overseas for school aged boys and girls. The Rotary Club has pledged to match the school's fundraising efforts, so now 140 bed kits will be purchased. Our club is so proud of Palgrave Public School's students and staff who were involved in this venture. |

Palgrave Westview Park ProjectThe Rotary Club of Palgrave has partnered with the Town of Caledon to fund and retrofit the Westview Park located in the Village of Palgrave and make it completely accessible to adults and children alike. The park is located at 19 Brawton Drive has been renamed the Norma Bangay Park. The new playground equipment, excavation work and accessibility upgrades will allow seniors, families and individuals with special needs to access and use new upgraded park facilities. Construction for this project is scheduled for the Spring of 2018. The park is dedicated to Norma Bangay to commemorate her contribution to children’s education in the local community. Rotary BBQ at the RustjaWhile the thunderstorms were threatening and Elizabeth was resetting her backyard for the second time for the event, finally the sun came out just 5 minutes before the official opening of the event. The spirits must have been kind to her while listening to her pleas. More than 40 of us accessed her beautiful grounds to attend this event and Michelle and Allyson also worked hard to prepare some beautiful and delicious food. Many guests of Rotary also attended including our honorary member mayor Thomson and his lovely wife Anne. So thank you Elizabeth and Steve for generously hosting this event. ![]() |

Palgrave Rotary collecting Hockey equipment.Palgrave Rotary needs Hockey EquipmentThank you Caledon. No more than 10 days ago, Susan Hicks from the Palgrave Rotary put out a request for new or slightly used hockey equipment that would be sent to John C. Yesno Indigenous School in Fort Hope, Ont. which is situated 3.5 hrs. Northeast of Thunder Bay. We partnered with Gerry Lue from the Etobicoke Rotary Club who were the lead on setting up this project. Our members and friends of Palgrave Rotary jumped on board and reached out to the community and we have had a stunning response.
The families of the Caledon Hawks were able to help out after Caledon Rep Hockey connected with 20 teams. Sandra Tomona rallied the Investors Group team & received amazing donations from Caledon Women’s Hockey League, & Rexdale Women’s Hockey League. Also Patti Foley and her “JustSayin” internet publication and Heather Savage of the Caledon Parks and Recreation department both passed on our message. The response has been overwhelming.
Here are the results:
260 Pcs. of equipment (hockey stick, pads, helmets etc.…)
326 Hockey Sweaters
175 pr. Of Hockey socks.
75 pr. Of skates.
17 full size hockey bags
Palgrave Rotary club would like to thank all the families and hockey teams that went out of their way to make this such a successful project with just 10 days’ notice. We are so grateful for your continued help and support.

Weekly Meeting - August 21, 2013President Ron rang the opening bell right on time, even remembered to provide members with a 2 minute warning to re-charge their glasses. Opening festivities lagged a tad and Bob was heard to comment that the 'Anthem" was suspect! This brought forth a comment from Trevor that Bob's membership should be re-considered so it was obvious that although we cannot sing the Anthem very well Fellowship is alive and well! The saving grace was our usual fine version of the Rotary Grace. DG Mike had the pleasure of introducing our only guest, and speaker, Brian Harkness who is a former member and now with a club up north an hour or so away. Brian informed the club that he felt our Anthem was O K and Rotary Grace great!! Go figure. President Ron must stay awake at night working on the perfect solution for table order for the buffet dinner. After tonight's plan he will have many more sleepless nights! Or should have!! The twilight zone seems to have settled in around Palgrave. The members seem to listen to Pres Ron and then sort it out themselves. Either way it works. P P Diether used some air time to advise the club that our inbound student Victoria will arrive Sunday from Brazil and will initially stay with Diether & Eva. Victroia will then move in with DG Mike & Karen, her first host family. P P Diether requested members please keep Victoria in mind for any events or functions they may be attending or planning and please invite her so as to add to her experiences in Canada. Diether will be her counselor for the year so please contact him if you would like to invite Victoria to an event. Wayne then addressed the club as our Youth Exchange officer requesting at least one additional host family for Victoria's year, probably May - July next year. There are 2 non-Rotarian families volunteering so far so we need at least one additional host and if more Rotarians come forward the better as Victoria is a Rotarian Exchange Student!! Wayne then went on to inform the club that he will probably be moving to Westport ON next fall so we will need a replacement youth Exchange officer. I for one would like to take this opportunity to thank Wayne for many years of dedicated service to the youth program and the results we have had is a testimony to his hard work. Bob and Ross immediately made a motion that Wayne cannot leave, passed unanimously!! Trevor advised the club that he was happy to be back form his summer at the cottage, anyone notice his absence? Moving right along he then gave his normal comments about dues, VISA, overdue, laggards, I'm back, etc!! Bottom line being that the VISA machine was set up and just a humming looking for cards. Warren updated the club with reference to acquisition forms for the silent auction, available at the club as well as on-line. Start early please, reminds me I must speak to AC for the sim. Event is Nov 23 so let us get at it! The club needs to sell 300 tickets and ideally it would be nice if each member brought in gifts or items for auction with a value of $800, averaged among all members of course. Wendy you out there?? Of course she is. Tom reminded the members of Terry Fox Day coming up on September 15th and a few volunteers are still needed so if able please contact Tom. A great day for our community. Pres Ron advised the club that Jim has accepted his invitation to be our 3d member of the Community Advisory Committee, joining Richard & Bernie. We are in good hands. Pres Ron reminded the club that our official dinner with DG Mike & Karen will be Sept 4th. Would be great to have a the hall full of Rotarians, spouses and/or friends. Mark your calenders. Wayne has volunteered to present a Rotary minute next regular meeting, Sept 4th. Ross introduced our guest speaker, Brian Harkness, a former member of our club who spoke of the changes in aviation and why these have happened. Brian is a retired Captain from Air Canada where he flew for 35 years. Brian is currently New Generation Director with his club up north and passed out sponsor forms for a club event at his home club. Brian also exchanged club banners with Pres Ron On to events that have changed aviation! Brian currently serves as a consultant to Air Canada working in the area of new policies and procedures dealing with new generation approach aids. Events that have forced the aviation industry to look at itself unfortunately usually derive from incidents or accidents. Brian started with the Swissair accident that ended up in the water close to Peggy Cove, why did it happen and what did we learn? Primarily procedures were changed regarding smoke in the aircraft and how to create wire bundles in the a/c. I could go on as to how the changes were implemented but will try to keep this reasonably concise. Suffice it to say changes in procedures followed the lessons learned. On the lighter side sometimes the lessons learned result in humerous events, like a Airbus 320 declaring an emergency and landing immediately for what turned out to be burned toast in the galley! Brian went on to discuss 3 accidents Air France has had and applied the lessons learned to aviation today. Some incidents/accidents result from a training/cultural problem and once recognized they must be addressed. Korean Airlines would be a positive example of an airline recognizing they had a problem and addressing the problem quickly and positively. Unfortunately there are examples that go the other direction. Brian politely worked around the problem that the new generation of pilots tend to be under-trained today, lack the experience previous generations had and therefore present new challenges in training. The discussion of automation in today's cockpit is on-going and something that must be addressed, vis-a-vi the Air France A 330 accident over the Atlantic. Many feel that once the accountant mentality took over the airlines changes were made but not for the better. This discussion could go on and on so suffice it to say that the membership seemed to enjoy the presentation and asked pertinent, interesting questions during the Q & A session that followed Brian's comments. Bill asked an interesting question, why are young men and women still attracted to the profession today with such low starting salaries and poor working conditions? The answer is that there is still the love of flying out there, and in my words "it beats working for a living"! I would have hated to get a real job!! Many thanks to Brian for a most interesting presentation, judging by the quietness of members while he was speaking the club obviously enjoyed Your scribe had the pleasure of thanking Brian and presenting him a new coffee mug reminding him of his roots in Rotary. Your scribe donated a bed kit for the usual rendition of Happy Birthday and was rewarded with a new low!! I mean like a new LOW!! Many thanks. Happy Bucks were spent and if Nancy gets another hole-in-one we all get free drinks! Warren was the Sergeant for the evening and made up for any lack of funds over the past few meetings. He unfairly made the table where I was sitting pay a fine for $2 but what the heck, all for a good cause. Pres Ron was fined and sent back to the drawing board for table selection, surprise, surprise. Well done Warren! Janet returned from her cruise in Russia just in time to win the wine draw! Well done. Next week will be a Bar-B-Q with Gary & Nadine so please check in early, especially if bringing guests. Yes Bob, a spousal event See you there. Have a super week, be well.
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.

Canada Day a Success! To all of you named below thank you so much. I think that we have proven to the club that this is a worthwhile fund raiser that should be pursued in future years. Considering that the attendance was down by about 35% from last year our totals are very good and the cost of administrating this event is nil outside of the water and the signage (which will only happen this first time). I had suggested that we could reach $6000 in revenue if the attendance was the same as last year. As it turned out we collected $5893.56 with only 65% of last year’s attendance. If we reach the attendance of previous years again and we will, the revenue should reach close to $7500 in future years. The 2011 revenue for this event was at the same level as this year with parking fees forcing the donation. Without the help of friends and neighbours that volunteered to help, we could not have achieved what I thought was a very smooth operation which also was lots of fun. So thank you Lymans, Grant, Evangelista, Dwyer and Hopsons. We did have 6 members that also participated in this endeavour. A big thank you to you also. WE DID IT!!!! AND IT WAS FUN WITH MUSIC AND DANCING. |

Palgrave Rotary's Change Over NightWhat a great night of celebration! A Black Tie event that thanked our out-going President Alan Whike for his leadership through 2008/2009 and welcomed our "first-ever" Lady President, Nancy Hageman. What a wonderful tribute to Rotary and the Club. And yes, she sure commands the attention from the members! Her ideas are new and bold and our 2009/2010 year will no doubt be one that will be remebered fondly and carried with a pride of accomplishment. We've got your back Nancy----go for it! |
