4WD trip across the top of the Lammermoor Range

Sunday 22 November 2020, we had the opportunity to host 26 4WD's in a trip across the top of the Lammermoor Range, inland from Dunedin.  The event had two purposes
- Provide an opportunity for people to venture into country where they would not normally want to take their 4WD vehicle unaccompanied
- As a fund raiser for our Charitable Trust.
The day turned out more challenging than expected, with 50mm of overnight snow on the tops. As a consequence there was plenty of mud and slush which added some challenging fun, but in the end everyone got through safely, and had lots of fun in the process.
A great day on top of a mountain.

Brassica Competition

story-thumbnail
Everyone knows greens are good for you.  Not only are they good for your health - the Club's recent Brassica competition encouraged local farmers to grow the best Brassica crop they could with the producer of the best crop in each category recognised with an award given by the Club.

The awards ceremony was a great followship occasion, and raised funds for community projects. About 250 people joined us for the Awards ceremony which raised around $50,000 which the Club will use to support a variety of charities in our area.

This project has generated intense competition between the local farmers, with great interest in un-seating earlier champions. The awards ceremony is a great occasion, and has become a much anticipated event in the farming community.

In 2017 the proceeds were donated to the Rescue Helicopter and the Berwick Youth Camp.  The 2018 competition is due to close in the next few weeks.

Vanuatu Water Catchment Structure

Posted by Peter Williams
Kerry McMillan prepared the following report on the Port Callia (Votlo) Water Catchment Structure Project the Waitakere International Commitee has been involved with in the Vanuatu District (9910) since 2015.  It is a joint project between Waitakere and the Dunedin North Rotary Clubs, and Peter Williams from the Taieri Club assisted in the building of the structure during a visit in June 2016. The Dunedin North and Taieri clubs have approved funding to support the training of a village member to continue her health training. The Taieri club has embarked on a wood cutting project to raise funds for a site visit to enable some of the work Kerri mentions in his report to be completed.

Saving lives in Ghana

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.
