FAMILY
I have spent the last week with Gay up in Rolleston babysitting, sorry it is “child minding “as my eldest granddaughter would say. Also spent time with different friends and their families. After just over a week Gay and I travelled south to Geraldine and meet up with more family and friends.
On Monday while driving I reflexed on why I had spent so much time relaxed and having a warm glow in my heart. It is was about south of the Waitaki River Bridge I started to think about Rotary and what it meant to me, and same feeling I had. Yes, Rotary is like another Family to me. My special day was finished off by being visited by family and grand kids. I was blessed.
It was the same qualities that make a great family,  the same values that make the Rotary Family so great. Some of these qualities are sharing love and respect, support, caring, fun, understanding and values between each other.
This is why the Mosgiel Rotary family is so great. In the past 14 years I have seen the Club grieve for the death of members and support those around them. Celebrate births and other family events.
During convid 19 members reached out to each other in many ways and supported each other.
You should be proud of yourself and continue showing love to all.

Stories
Makariki and Rotary
ROTARY AND MAKARIKI.
Are there some similarities we in Rotary have, or can learn from such an ancient culture our Maori friends celebrate.
MATARIKI OR PUANGA - THE START OF THE NEW YEAR

Puanga is the first star to appear on the horizon, signalling that in three days Matariki would rise. For some iwi, Puanga  (Puaka) – Rigel is the star that heralds the New Year as it always rises before Matariki (e.g. Taranaki and Whanganui iwi, and some on the West Coast of the South Island).  However, for some iwi, Matariki marks the start of the New Year. For some Māori the first new moon after the rise of Matariki signals the start of the New Year celebrations. The moon (Marama)  is seen as the start for all things new, and guides the activities for the planting and harvesting of kai on the land and at sea.
The new Rotary year starts in July each year which coincides with Makaraki and is seen (quote)"as the start for all things new and guides the activities for the planting and harvesting"  For "Planting and harvesting" we call it the time for "Planning and Action".

Town clock gets overhaul
Image may contain: sky and outdoorExciting for Mosgiel residents and Rotarians to see a cherry picker in action on Gordon Road on Monday giving our Rotary Clock and overhaul. The electronic clock and temperature had been on the blink for some time.
Good work DCC for getting on to it. Hopefully the tune up will keep it running well into the future.
